[arch-general] How will Arch handle systemd 245 and homed?

All, I just read the article about the major change coming to systemd 245 at: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/linux-home-directory-management-is-abo… What is terrifying is the SSH Problem. 9/10 hosts I interact with I do via ssh. And do we really need LUKS encrypted volumes for every user's $HOME directory? Sure for enterprise setups, etc.. but will there be a way to simply keep a normal unencrypted /home. How would scripts be able to backup certain work locations from user directories if the user is logged out? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Graceful shutdown Arch Linux

Dear Arch users, I am Ramkumar from India, i use Archlinux with i3 and no login manager. When i try to shutdown the machine, it throws lot of warnings about ethernet port and etc.. and when turning on the machine and open an application, say firefox, it shows like it has been crashed as if it was a forceful shutdown. But i checked it whether firefox is closed before shutting down and it was closed. I am worried whether i am doing some nasty things while shutting the machine down. Could you please help me with some graceful shutdown options for Arch linux? Thanks in advance -Ramkumar

[arch-general] texlive-core is missing dependencies

Hello, I was wondering when the maintainer of the texlive-core package add the dependencies required by latexindent which is included in the package. The bug report (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/60210) has been open for over a year and is the most voted bug on the bug tracker. I would be very grateful if the maintainer of this package is willing to fix this simple bug, which have bothered me and others a lot. Thanks, John

[arch-general] Inkscape 1.0 toolbar icon size, padding, margin fix?

All, With the update to inkscape 1.0, the toolbars no longer fit on the screen and ellipsize reducing the number of toolbar icons by 1/3 (from 24 to 17 visible on laptop display). Is there any way to reduce the space between the icons or the space between the toolbars to be similar to 0.92.5? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Having a problem with a usb device it is an Adafruit Trinket on plugging the device in i get 3761.650687] usb 7-1: new low-speed USB device number 3 using ohci-pci [ 3761.839453] usb 7-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1781, idProduct=0c9f, bcdDevice= 1.05 [ 3761.839469] usb 7-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 [ 3761.839473] usb 7-1: Product: Trinket [ 3761.839476] usb 7-1: Manufacturer: Adafruit but no USB port given lsusb gives Bus 002 Device 011: ID 1781:0c9f Multiple Vendors USBtiny Is there usb support for this device as i need to get this working as an update to an Antenna rotator that has a defunct no longer available display for direction Thanks Pete ( G6NJR)

Hello, I have question to the combination of inotify and rsync. I want that my documents folder sync with other maschine if the host is up. So I find this soulution in net. The problem is, I write a script take it in /usr/local/bin cat /usr/local/bin/sync_docs.sh #!/usr/bin/env bash if ping -c 1 192.168.2.160 &> /dev/null; then while true; do inotifywait -r -e modify,attrib,close_write,move,create,delete /home/siefke/Dokumente rsync -avuq /home/siefke/Dokumente/ samsung:/home/siefke/Dokumente/ done fi and a systend service file. So but when the script run I become ever error siefke(a)192.168.2.160: Permission denied (publickey,password). So I place the script in home folder, place systemd service file in home and run it with systemd --user. The result is same. When run ssh samsung it works, when I run sync_docs.sh in shell it works. Why with systemd make it trouble? Thank you Silvio

[arch-general] Heads up: After system update, LUKS fails with certain BIOS versions

Hello everyone, My desktop machine didn't shut down cleanly yesterday after I did system upgrades, hanging at closing my dmcrypt devices. I power-cycled after 10 minutes, and today it wouldn't boot, again hanging at the [encrypt]-hook. I tried cryptsetup open, luksOpen, luksDump and isLuks from a fresh 2020-05-01 archiso, all with --debug, with multiple encrypted internal drives, all hanging after printing the header checksum. So I couldn't access any of my drives anymore. dd if=/dev/sdxy of=/dev/null worked fine for all of them, though. I already thought my header got corrupted somehow and my data was lost, until I remembered I had some output in dmesg for several months now: `rdrand gives funky smelling output`. I gave it a shot and updated my BIOS, and hooray, my system booted up just fine. Back in my system, I noticed cryptsetup 2.3.1-1 -> 2.3.1-3 and linux 5.6.7 -> 5.6.8 in yesterday's update. So probably something has changed in that update that causes an issue connected with the old BIOS version. This was definitely not the solution I expected, and therefore I want to share it, as others might be affected as well. My Mainboard is an Asus Prime X470-Pro, CPU is AMD Ryzen 7-3900x. Updating to BIOS v5406 fixed the issue. So if you get similar issues, don't worry, your data might not be lost :) Kind regards, LuKaRo

(hope I haven't broken the mail thread) TL;DR : yes, downloading in build hurts users. downloads during build() using gomodules are - unpredictable as packager has no control over what is downloaded - break reproducible builds because of their unpredictable nature. Some other comments - arch-meson disables downloads by default. - most (all ?) packagers that use meson directly use --nowrap to prevent downloads. - in the past VCS sources were downloaded in build() . pacman devs invested lots of time and effort to allow controlling them through source array. - git submodules work in a similar way . The VCS packaging guidelines wiki page describes how to download the submoduile sources through source array and add them manually in prepare(). This allows packagers to follow upstream intent but stay in control. - gomodules are source files. If they need to be downloaded that should happen in prepare() , not build() . Lone_Wolf
