[arch-general] Problems of using pacman and updating the filesystem

Hi, I get some problems about pacman. At beginning, I use pacman -Syu to update the system, and then I cannot login the system. I checked the internet, and then use CD to load the system, and use pacman -Syu mkinitcpio systemd linux, and get the following information: (133/133) checking for file conflicts [######################] 100% error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) filesystem: /bin exists in filesystem filesystem: /sbin exists in filesystem filesystem: /usr/sbin exists in filesystem Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. After this, I use the following command to update the system: pacman -Syu --ignore filesystem,bash pacman -S bash and then reboot, get the following information: ERROR: root device mounted successfully, but /sbin/init does not exist. Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck. Sh: cannot access tty: job control turned off. ? I really appreciate if anyone can help me to solve this problem, it seems I damage the file system. Is there any way to go back to the previous system, or repair this error? Thank you all. Thanks for putting this up - much appreciated. Testing this now - I didn't see any significant visual changes and don't see much behavioural diffs either other than desktop search. However I had nepomuk turned off (I have zero need or interest in any global search) - for the life of me I cannot find the off button with baloo. I did add every directory to the ignore list - but i'd rather turn off unneeded services. Anyone know how to turn it off?

Hi there, Mozilla have made a fork of the libjpeg-turbo package called mozjpeg, which features improved encoding: https://blog.mozilla.org/research/2014/03/05/introducing-the-mozjpeg-projec… I'd like to propose making the switch. The "library configuration defaults are the same as for libjpeg-turbo, in order to make transitions as painless as possible". [arch-general] PKGBUILD any way to create pkg-A & pkg-A-test that install w/o conflict

All, Is it possible to create multiple packages that have different package names but are the same package (with different patches) and have them install without conflict? (for testing) Currently I'm testing systemd patches for pkg 'tde-tdebase'. I built a separate package with the systemd patches called 'tde-tdebase-systemd'. Both have the same provides=('tdebase'). Whenever I attempt to install tde-tdebase-systemd, it conflicts with every file from the old tde-tdebase packages requiring a 'pacman -Rdd tde-tdebase', then a pacman -U tde-tdebase-systemd to install. I would like to find something like replaces=() that would work on simple package installs without doing a Sysupgrade each time I switch back and forth. Is this possible, or is it just better to keep the same pkgname and use different pkgrel to distinguish (I've been doing it this way, but would like to use a descriptive filename that identifies included patches) I know 'replaces' is only for Sysupgrade, is there any workaround for normal package installs? -- David C. Hi, I do not consider myself as a Linux expert, but rather an advanced user. I am running Arch for a few years now, with a clean setting environment and no major breakage. I am a great fan of systemd functionallities, but I waste my time the past two weeks setting up a working network on a systemd-nspawn managed container with no success. My setup is rather basic : a static IP for the main machine (it seems the HOST term is not relevant) and a static IP for the container. I have been reading/posting a lot, but as today didn't get a clean answer about netctl/systemd-networkd configuration files. Systemd is now ruling the Linux world, as more and more services are managed by it. This is not a bad thing, but in my opinion, there is a clear lack of good documentation/manuals/wiki. As it seems we are bound to learn systemd, I wish the systemd community could propose more documented manuals. This is not the case today. We shall now engage a serious rethinking of what part of systemd shall be in core, and what part stay in devel. A good example would be systemd-networkd. Honestly, this service needs supra intelligence or NASA tech engineer knowledge. Lennart and his team are certainly very good dev and clever guys, but they clearly don't deliver good documentation. I remember that one of my main pain in Linux was to set up a working pulse audio service ! As a long time Linux user, I do not see any interest in setting up packages with no serious documentations. I do not want my post to start a new flame as the one two years ago, but I am expecting some kind of community reaction against beta/broken/incomprehensible services. I wish the Arch community could be able to separate the working/documented part of systemd from the dark/beta part only dedicated to a few elite.

Dear list, I am running a machine "hortensia" with a container "dahlia". As the container will be a server, I want to have one IP for hortensia and another one for dahlia. Then, I can see NO-CARRIER in the br0 status. Is it the expected output ? Why is br0 DOWN ? Why can't I bring it UP ?
