Hi, --- Orphans --- In connection with the newly created TODO lists for rebuilds of packages formerly maintained by people that are no longer involved with Arch Linux, I wondered if there would be any objections if I moved the following packages from [community] to AUR: (They are currently unneeded orphans, ref https://www.archlinux.org/devel/reports/unneeded-orphans/). abe aircrack-ng archlinux-artwork archlinux-lxdm-theme bchunk bpython bpython2 cdck cherrytree cmus consonance ekg ekg2 fdupes fssos-nsvs ginac gkrellm gnome-themes-extras lastfmsubmitd libcgns2 luarocks lxinput lxlauncher lxmusic lxshortcut mpdscribble obkey openclonk openocd perlbrew pkgtools pypy3 python2-basemap python2-mpi4py python2-pyproj python2-virtkey python-apsw python-basemap python-bsddb python-html5lib python-mpi4py python-pyproj python-virtkey smokeping synaptiks tremulous v8 vim-buftabs vobcopy wqy-microhei-lite xdelta xdelta3 zsync Several, but not all of these, are on the newly created TODO-lists. All of them are "unneeded orphans" (https://www.archlinux.org/devel/reports/unneeded-orphans/). If you wish to adopt one of these, just reply to this email (or adopt it). Objections to moving them should preferrably also lead to someone adopting the orphans. --- Git --- As I gather, we all like git better than svn, for a long list of reasons. Are there any objections to switching over from svn to git as repositories for the official packages? Yes, this can not be done in a heartbeat. [arch-general] Gnome and Arch Issues Under VirtualBox

Hi guys: I've installed Gnome and I don't really want to run it from the GDM. So, I went into the directory /etc/skel/ and have erased the comment lines off of exect gnome-session. When I type startx, and press alt+F2 to run and type Orca, nothing seems to happen. Also, I have the VirtualBox guest utilities and have loaded all the modules. Is there an issue here with VirtualBox that I am not aware of?

Hi, I just checked what was the motivation for this 5th release and I have found: http://hmarco.org/bugs/CVE-2013-4788.html where it says: The vulnerability is caused due to the non initialization to a random value (it is always zero) of the "pointer guard" by the glibc only when generating static compiled executables. Dynamic executables are not affected. Pointer guard is used to mangle the content of sensible pointers (longjmp, signal handlers, etc.), if the pointer guard value is zero (non-initialized) then it is not effective. Hi everyone! As far as I can see, there's only one option for non-US-citizens to donate money to the project. This one option is a credit card [1]. As you may or may not be aware: Most (european) german citizens do not possess and wish not possess a credit card and in some cases are not able to possess a credit card. Are other donation options planned in the future? How soon? I would even send an envelope with €urobills in it via AirMail, though I'd prefer something more secure like Bitcoin or (I know many see it as the devil) PayPal. tl,dr: I want to send money to Arch Linux, but can't. Hello, I'm having problems with starting 'mpd' as a user service: $ systemctl --user status mpd mpd.service - Music Player Daemon Loaded: loaded (/home/me/.config/systemd/user/mpd.service; enabled) Active: inactive (dead) However it works without any problems when started manually: $ systemctl --user start mpd $ systemctl --user status mpd mpd.service - Music Player Daemon Loaded: loaded (/home/me/.config/systemd/user/mpd.service; enabled) Active: active (running) since Wed 2013-09-25 22:10:36 BST; 5s ago Main PID: 709 (mpd) CGroup: /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user(a)1000.service/mpd.service └─709 /usr/bin/mpd --stdout --no-daemon /home/me/.config/mpd/mpdconf Sep 25 22:10:36 XXX systemd[233]: Starting Music Player Daemon... Sep 25 22:10:36 XXX systemd[233]: Started Music Player Daemon. It's a fresh Arch install so it's unlikely that I messed something up. So far, in regrads to systemd I followed wiki [1] enabling autologin, fixed 'pam' and added some environmental variables to user session as per [2]. Any idea why this may be happening? [arch-general] Wayland Support in Gnome 3.10

I'm not entirely savvy with all the details but from my understanding, GNOME 3.10 will be featuring a Wayland tech preview, meaning that it can (optionally?) use the wayland protocol to manage graphics and windows and all that fun stuff. Are we going to compile this support by default? Does anyone know how and if we'll be able to switch back and forth between Xorg and Wayland?

[arch-general] Best way for PKGBUILD to depend on another PKGBUILD (not a package)

Hi, Today on AUR I published coreutils-static package [1], a statically compiled variant of coreutils with --prefix=/rescue. coreutils depends on libattr and libcap. Because of the nature of static compilation libattr.a and libcap.a files are needed during the build. My package defines PKGBUILDs from [core] repo as source=(), performs `makepkg`, and provides -L for coreutils make during build(). [2] I pretty much like this idea because PKGBUILDs are ready to use. I don't need to define attr and libcap tar.gz releases as my package source=() and compile them by hand in build() which would be, more or less, a copy-paste. (pacman-static in AUR [3] does a copy-paste) The question: is this the best way for PKGBUILD to depend on another PKGBUILD? Are there any better solutions? And if this approach is reasonable, are there any ways to improve it? Especially the PKGBUILD code for -L, I don't quite like it. Thanks. Hello I am trying to get my multimedia volume up and down buttons to work. I am reading various notes on amixer usage and it seems for others they can adjust current volume settings up and down. For me, i can only adjust to a fixed value. For example, this will set my volume to 50% [davis@x200 ~]$ amixer -c 0 cset numid=15,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume' 50% numid=15,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume' ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=74,step=0 : values=37 | dBscale-min=-74.00dB,step=1.00dB,mute=0 But then if I want to adjust it by 2dB it will not adjust up or down by 2dB instead it sets the value to 2. If I set it to 2dB+ or simply the value 2 it does the same thing. [arch-general] Quo vadis, systemd user session?

I know, I know, it's only semi-supported, but I use systemd --user to manage my graphical environment (no DE, just a WM and a few applications). I've written a system-level service file which calls startx, which in turn calls systemd user session via .xinitrc: dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user The recent systemd update removed support for direct manipulation of cgroups. I had to rewrite the service file, cannibalized user@.service and ended up with this [1]. Yeah, it's cargo culting, but my mortal brain sometimes can't grok systemds complexity. So my first questions are: Is this something a sane person would do? Is there a more elegant way without installing more 3rd party software? Do I need to involve logind in some way? Part 2: Systemd now calls user@.service with every login, which in turn calls systemd --user. But as I said, I use it for graphical stuff, so I do not want this behavior. So the second bunch of questions would be: Can I overwrite user@.service without breaking something else? How would I do that? Any kind of held is appreciated.
