[arch-general] Way too much kworkers

Hello, I've googled a bit and saw that other people have this problem too, but without solution. They had maybe 8 or 10 kworker processes. After 2 suspends, I have 172. ps -ef | grep kworker | wc -l 173 (one of the line is grep's process). Is there any solution?

[arch-general] xdm and awesomewm incompatibilty

Hi, I see that xdm and awesome wm dont go well together. It used to work well before. I see after recent package update. awesome wm crashes often. After killing xdm, it is back normal again. Has anyone else experienced this ? If xdm is buggy, then can someone suggest a good login manager for X ? I see gdm brings in gnome-shell and loads of other packages which is not directly related to login manager. What i am looking for is just the login manager and its dependecies and not the entire DE. I assume kdm does the same thing. The awesome wm & xdm version in my pc is: awesome 3.5.1-3 xorg-xdm 1.1.11-4 with regards, ashwin

[arch-general] [zfs] new problem at the installation version problem ?

I've already done a zfs installation with archlinux but this time and for the first time when i try to make a new one it doesn't seems to have load the zfs module and when i try to install it with insmod it says to me : invalid module format .... i may have just to wait that the problem will be corrected ? And i've done everything accord to the tutorial. [arch-general] Upgrade problem

Hi, all. I'm a newcomer to Arch Linux so excuse my ignorance. I attempted to update yesterday (pacman -Syu) & I got this message at the end of the update: '(121/121) checking for file conflicts [#################################################] 100% error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) filesystem: /bin exists in filesystem filesystem: /sbin exists in filesystem filesystem: /usr/sbin exists in filesystem Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.' Can anybody tell me what it means & how to go about fixing it (I've got Arch running on a VPS). I see both sides of the argument as valid: - Lots of people don't need the static libraries so why include them in packages, they are wasting space. On the other hand... - Some developers need static libraries to build their projects. In my case I needed to build a static library that has dependencies on the Boost library. I do not want unresolved symbols to Boost C++ library functions in there. I really don't think that completely removing static libraries from the repositories is the correct approach because it I believe the choice of whether or not to have static libraries on your system should be down to the user and not the distro (yes I'm aware I could compile boost myself... that's what I'm doing right now but what happened to "Keep it Simple"? If I wanted to compile loads of stuff from scratch I'd be using Gentoo). So my proposal is this: For popular packages that have can build static libraries and shared libraries, build both but put the static libraries into their own "*-staticlibs" package and the *-libs" packages should contain only shared libraries. For example for boost you would have boost : Development headers + other files boost-libs : Boost shared libraries boost-static-libs : Boost static libraries The boost package dependencies would be set to be dependent on boost-libs but **not** boost-staticlibs so the static libraries would only be installed if the user explicitly installed them. So everybody wins. Static libraries are not installed by default saving disk space but the static libraries are available as packages should the user decide they need them. Looking at the PKGBUILD syntax this looked quite trivial to do so I've done it for Boost and the patch is attached (apply against boost 1.54.0-3 PKGBUILD) Thoughts? Thanks, Dan Liew

Sorry, I'm not really able to help with startx stuff. It hasn't worked for me since about 2007 or so. It seems pretty involved these days to get it working. [arch-general] Problem bringing up bridge interface with netctl

I recently upgraded to systemd-207 and I'm having some problems using netctl to bring up a bridged interface during the system boot. The problem is that systemd will try and bring the bridged interface up before bringing up the actual network interface that is included in the bridge and, as a result, it times out: (From journalctl) Sep 27 23:59:34 io systemd[1]: Job sys-subsystem-net-devices-net1.710.device/start timed out. I seem to have an issue with the timing with which the different parts of the network interfaces are brought up.
