Hello I am trying to get my multimedia volume up and down buttons to work. I am reading various notes on amixer usage and it seems for others they can adjust current volume settings up and down. For me, i can only adjust to a fixed value. For example, this will set my volume to 50% [davis@x200 ~]$ amixer -c 0 cset numid=15,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume' 50% numid=15,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume' ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=74,step=0 : values=37 | dBscale-min=-74.00dB,step=1.00dB,mute=0 But then if I want to adjust it by 2dB it will not adjust up or down by 2dB instead it sets the value to 2. If I set it to 2dB+ or simply the value 2 it does the same thing. [davis@x200 ~]$ amixer -c 0 cset numid=15,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume' 2dB+ numid=15,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume' ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=74,step=0 : values=2 | dBscale-min=-74.00dB,step=1.00dB,mute=0 It appears the parser is ignoring dB and or +/- and only recognizing %. -- John F. [arch-general] Quo vadis, systemd user session?

I know, I know, it's only semi-supported, but I use systemd --user to manage my graphical environment (no DE, just a WM and a few applications). I've written a system-level service file which calls startx, which in turn calls systemd user session via .xinitrc: dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user The recent systemd update removed support for direct manipulation of cgroups. I had to rewrite the service file, cannibalized user@.service and ended up with this [1]. Yeah, it's cargo culting, but my mortal brain sometimes can't grok systemds complexity. So my first questions are: Is this something a sane person would do? Is there a more elegant way without installing more 3rd party software? Do I need to involve logind in some way? Part 2: Systemd now calls user@.service with every login, which in turn calls systemd --user. But as I said, I use it for graphical stuff, so I do not want this behavior. So the second bunch of questions would be: Can I overwrite user@.service without breaking something else? How would I do that? Any kind of held is appreciated. That did it. I added btrfs, zlib_deflate, and libcrc32a. I think I had previously needed to add crc32a for a different problem I was having with multi-device btrfs volumes. [arch-general] Thunderbird unread message count

Having one small issue with the new Thunderbird (v24.0) upgrade. On one of the IMAP accounts I use, all the mailboxes are set up as children of Inbox. Apparently in the new version of Thunderbird, when I'm looking at "Unread Folders" in that account, the unread message count displayed is the *total* of all unread messages in every sub-folder of Inbox. But when I switch to "All Folders", it displays the count of unread messages in just the Inbox account alone. Anyone know if there's some tweak I can make to the Thunderbird config to get the old behavior back? Thanks, DR

Hi, archlinux.org claims "If you never customized /etc/sysctl.conf, you have nothing to do", while archlinux.de's claim is that only those settings "# Protection from the SYN flood attack. net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1 # Disable packet forwarding. net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0 net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding = 0" were used by a /etc/sysctl.conf that never was customized. I never customized the /etc/sysctl.conf on my machine, but it contains other enabled entries too. $ grep -v "#" /etc/sysctl.conf.pacsave net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1 net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0 net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding = 0 kernel.sysrq = 0 vm.swappiness = 10 fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 524288 This is confusing. [arch-general] arch install issues with 2013.09 iso & vfat device

Dear all, this is my second arch install this month (archlinux-2013.09.01-dual.iso) on an usb key to get a live Arch. Both installs failed on a vfat formated device, when they succed on ext2. $ pacstrap /mnt base returns lot of these erros: warning: warning given when extracting usr/bin/vgrename (Can't create '/mnt/usr/bin/vgrename') ...... It seems, even in chroot, that I can't write the vfat formated device I would like to use vfat as these keys are aimed to boot Arch from windows machines and share files. I used gdisk and fdisk to partition, then mkfs.vfat to format, on clean usb keys. Is there anything I missed ? Then, there is an issue with package vi: error: could not open file /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg/vi-1:050325-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz.part: Invalid argument I first # pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux and # pacman -Syy The only way to succed the install was : # pacstrap -i /mnt base --ignore vi I must add that earlier installs with earlier iso did not show this issue. Maybe shall I open a bug report, or is this a known issue ? Last, the above command returns : :: vi is in IgnorePkg/IgnoreGroup. Install anyway? [Y/n] It seems weird to me that default is Yes, as I specified --ignore vi. Would' nt it makes more sense to default No ? Regards.

Hi, There has been some changes in driver handling in core/linux-3.11-1 which require latest udev (>204) [1]. However, udev in [core] is still at v204 which will break some systems [2]. Is it possible to move systemd 207-2 or backport udev changes [1] to 204? [arch-general] systemd start a daemon after the Internet connection is established

Hi, I have a web proxy that can only initiate itself online, otherwise it would exit with an error. To daemonize that proxy, I wrote the following systemd service file: [Unit] Description=A Proxy Server After=network.target [Service] Type=simple ExecStart=/srv/proxy/aproxy/bin/main [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target When the server is connected to the Internet, this service file can launch the proxy successfully, but it doesn't work on system startup, supposedly due to the lack of an connection with Internet access. So I need systemd to make sure the connect has been established before it launch this daemon. Regards.
