[arch-general] What changed dual-boot grub definition (hd0, 0) -> (hd0, 1)

All, Just a note. After working through the update that brought in systemd, a final issue is that somehow the drive designation for grub (legacy) for the windows partition was changed from (hd0,0) to (hd0,1). This box is a simple old dell box with a single 500G drive. Windows has 80G and the rest in Arch. The dual boot for windows definition in grub menu.lst has always been: title Windows rootnoverify (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 'cat /proc/partitions' showed sda and then sda2 as the first primary partition. sda1 was no longer created by the system. Is there some reason that sda1 would be completely missing on the system where it had always been there before? This required the corresponding change of the menu.lst definition to: title Windows rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 While the fix is simple, what caused the loss of sda1 in the first place? This box has booted Arch and then XP as (hd0,0) since 2009. Now it requires (hd0,1). Is this related to the same udev issue that caused eth0 -> enp2s0? If so, can I rely on it staying sda2 going forward or do I need another softlink in /etc/udev/rules.d to make it so? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Device "eth0" does not exist - how to bring up?

All, After update that installed systemd, chrooting the system successfully starts the network and eth0 is present. However, when booting natively to the system no eth0 is present. Attempting /etc/rc.d/network restart results in "Device eth0 does not exist." According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd, until I append init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd to the kernel line and reboot, the system should still process the initscripts normally. However this does not occur. 'cat /proc/1/comm' still shows 'init' so I cannot figure out why I do not have an eth0. Appending init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd does bring up systemd and the system boots until X starts and the system hangs. It still responds to ctrl+alt+del, but will not switch to the graphical interface. It is just stuck. Is there a way to bring eth0 up under the old initscripts until I get the X hang sorted out? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

For this update [1] I got the PANIC the first time. If I install and remove leafpad, as a test, everything is ok. If I re-install linux, I get the PANIC messages too. Is DKMS broken? I need it to build Vbox modules for linux-rt. This apparently is a problem for boxes that haven't been updated in a few months. The last system update before the one on 2/5/13 was on 11/20/12. The pacman.log contains hints of where the problem began. After working with the chroot error a bit I stumbled across the fact that link for /lib was missing. After manually creating the link again, chroot worked like a champ. I don't know how much of the system got borked as a result, but a fresh pacman -Syu complete normally. I have not finished examining the system yet, so I have not attempted to boot to the new kernel. I will have to go through and verify the grub legacy config before I reboot. I'll report back after I have had an opportunity to test the box. Thank you to those that responded. -- David C. [arch-general] error during update of qt4 and qt5

pacman wanted to update some qt4 and qt5 packages, but this didn't work because of the following error: error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) /usr/share/applications/assistant.desktop exists in both 'qt4' and 'qt5-tools' /usr/share/applications/designer.desktop exists in both 'qt4' and 'qt5-tools' /usr/share/applications/linguist.desktop exists in both 'qt4' and 'qt5-tools' seems both qt versions are trying to provide .desktop files with the same name. what to do about this? -- phani.
