[arch-general] Arch Linux on servers?

Hi all, I'm writing a feature about Arch for Linux Format, a UK-based newsstand Linux magazine. I've been using Arch myself for a while for testing new app releases, and it's brilliant for that purpose. I'm still left wondering though: who uses it on production servers? I mean, the distro's overall simplicity and trimmed-down base installation are plus points here, but surely a rolling release poses problems. After installation you just want security and critical bug fix updates for software, and not major version bumps, right? www.archserver.org seems to be on hold, and I've also seen this page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Enhancing_Arch_Linux_Stability which has some useful tips. But it'd be interesting to hear from people running Arch on production servers, how well it works for them and what (if any) problems they've faced. Thanks! Mike

[arch-general] Can't store passwords with subversion 1.8.0

Hello everyone, since the update to subversion 1.8.0 i can't make subversion store passwords. It asks for the password with every command i execute. I also tried to tell subversion explicitely to store passwords and to store them in plaintext with the following settings in the servers config file: store-passwords = yes store-plaintext-passwords = yes But that didn't do the trick, either. So did anyone encounter the same problem or am i just doing something wrong? Thanks in advance. Oliver

[arch-general] Bringing in alsa-tools

Hey folks I'd like to provide alsa-tools [1] in our repos as it contains some very useful niche tools for some sound cards (mostly pro audio). It is presently in the AUR in one form or another. [2] It comes as one single tarball in terms of sources but the subdirs are self-contained. I'm leaning on providing a split package that will result in about 18--20 packages. You can take a look at the current working package here: http://pkgbuild.com/~schiv/alsa-tools/ There is no specific reason to do this - I just think this would make users happy. As a single package, all it would do is take up a few MBs worth of disk space and clutter up graphical application menus. However, the tools are all for different devices. Let me know if you have any objections to (i) adding this to [extra], and/or, (ii) splitting the package like this. CC'ing arch-general if anyone who uses the stuff wants to comment (advice and suggestions only). I thought it was deprecated in favour of netctl. Now it's impossible to install the base group, since netctl and netcfg are in conflict.

[arch-general] Wrapper for yaourt and pacman

Hi, to write a wrapper for yaourt, e.g. "yaourt -Syua" and pacman e.g. "pacman -Syu" I need to redirect the output to a variable, since I need to know the packages. i=`yaourt -Syua` doesn't work, $i only contains the last package i=`pacman -Syu` does work, $i contains all packages How can I get a package list of the output "-Syua"? Btw. is there a way to get a cache for yaourt that isn't located in /tmp? if not, then this would be one of the tasks the wrapper should do. Regards, Ralf

[arch-general] does using kms mean that you're stick to a framebuffer with specific resolution that you can't change?

the maximum resolution of my laptop is 1366x768, that's also the framebuffer size with kms enabled. the problem is when i attach a monitor with resolution 1920x1080 to it, the video output is at the top-left corner of the monitor. and i found myself unable to change the framebuffer size, appending video= option to the kernel command line doesn't take any effect. so, i wonder is there anyway to get a framebuffer with resolution 1920x1080 so i can benefit from the big monitor while still with kms enabled? kernel version : 3.10.0+ graphic card : intel hd4000

distccd needs libdbus-1.so.3, and `pactree distcc` does not have core/dbus.

[arch-general] gcc 4.8 breaking libdrm for me

This is just a heads up notice. I've found gcc 4.8 breaking libdrm on my nouveau nv44 device. When compiled with gcc 4.8 I'm faced with random nouveau related error messages in dmesg. Using new google maps quickly leads to Xorg hanging and finally to Xorg freezing or even crashing. I've seen other Arch people also claiming about random X crashes. Recompiling libdrm with -O0 or other new optimizaions disabled didn't solve it for me so far. But recompiling with a local gcc 4.7.3 makes it stable again. I'm asking for help in tracking this down. We need to find out if a certain part of libdrm has broken code that needs to be fixed. Please everybody with random Xorg crashes try to downgrade to libdrm 2.4.43 (the last one that was built with gcc 4.7) and post your gfx card. And this could also be a gcc 4.8 bug or regression. I've seen almost the same behavior with kernel xfs file system code leading to fs corruption under heavy load: http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=57436 Then we need to compare assembler code created by gcc 4.7 vs. 4.8. Any suggestion and help is welcome. -Andy
