[arch-general] fan/sensors problem in recent kernel update

It seems like a recent update to the kernel has changed the behaviour of the system sensors module. My laptop now constantly shows as being 10 degrees or so hotter than usual, which is causing the fan to run nearly constantly. However, when I boot into the lts kernel this behaviour magically goes away and the fan is nice and quiet. One other possibly relevant point: in addition to the "sensors" command showing higher temperature values under the main kernel, the format of the sensors output is completely different between the main kernel and lt. Anyone have any idea what might be going on here? Sensors output is pasted below. [arch-general] Weird accented letters in gnome testing

Hello, general list! I've recently upgrade to the gnome-unstable and now gnome-testing and I noticed that some accented letters (á, é, ñ) are sometimes not printed correctly. Curiously enough other times they are correct. I think that the difference is in the Unicode compositing, because when it is printed wrongly, it shows the normal character and the compositing character as two separated glyphs: * Precomposed character: OK. * Normal character plus compositing character: Wrong. For example, in the "Regional & Language" settings in "LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 gnome-control-center", the word "Español", is printed correctly as a language, but incorrectly as a "Input source". In the latter it shows "Espan~ol" where the "~" is actually a big dotted circle with a tilde on top. Is this a known issue? Or a bug? TY -- Rodrigo

I am trying to figure the best way to do LDAP authentication (using a customized version of nss-pam-ldapd from AUR) on my laboratory, but I am having some problems. Since Arch now have a pambase package that should be imported on every pam configuration files (instead to relly on using old *.so for which authentication module) but this is not what is happening: as far I know, KDE (and KDM) is the only package that really uses pambase configuration files. I don't think that the best way to resolve this is to put pam_ldap.so in every service that I need, so what should I do: -Import system-auth, system-login or system-local-login on every service that I need (and remove old and redundant *.so modules). -Just add pam_ldap.so on every service that I need. -- Thiago Kenji Okada <thiago.mast3r(a)gmail.com> PGP Key: EEC09705

Hi all, I've been playing with systemd for a few hours now and I must say I'm impressed, it's a very powerful tool. I want to thanks the devs for making the transition to it really smooth :) Now, as I'm still learning my way through it -that means I'm reading a lot!- I find that there are in my system here and there some small rough edges I would like to fix, these rough edges are: 1. Units with errors shown in systemctl --all: arch-modules-load.service error inactive dead arch-modules auditd.service error inactive dead auditd.servi plymouth-quit-wait.service error inactive dead plymouth-qui plymouth-start.service error inactive dead plymouth-sta rc-local-shutdown.service error inactive dead rc-local-shu rc-local.service error inactive dead rc-local.ser syslog.service error inactive dead syslog.servi A journalctl --this-boot shows: Cannot add dependency job for unit arch-modules-load.service, ignoring: Unit arch-modules-load.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status arch-modules-load.service' for details. That's because there isn't such file, right, but why is systemd trying to start it in first place? Since I strictly followed the wiki I don't know what I did wrong, in any case I would like to know how to fix them. By the way: what is the auditd.service? There's even isn't any related file in /lib/systemd/system. 2. KDE-related issues: a) It seems a bit buggy to launch KDE SC through xinit: KDE's power options will not be present (KDE will not enable it's own reboot and shutdown options). This don't really worry me too much since I've read somewhere there're plans to rebuild all login managers to systemd-logind enabled - while dropping ConsoleKit. b) If KDE is launched through xinit it will not see the built-in sound card and will offer to remove it from it's supported devices. Otherwise if KDE is initiated via KDM every- things works right. c) KDM reboot and poweroff commands must be updated to systemd's way or else the traditional shutdown command will hang the system on reboot/shutdown. 3. $ systemctl reboot and $ systemctl shutdown features: I feel a bit uncomfortable with the idea of having restricted users with the hability to reboot or shutdown the system, is there any way to change this so only r00t can issue these orders? (Without going dirty.) 4. Is there any place for e4rat(lite)? Since I activated systemd's built-in ureadahead feature, will e4rat still add any improve- ment? What do you say? I think that's all for now! Once again I want to thanks everyone involved in porting systemd to AL and making this an overall relaxed transition, systemd is an incredible tool and I'm delighted with it. Boot and shutdown times are faster than ever (blazing fast to be honest), configuration is quite clean and easy and the journal feature is incredible useful giving a *lot* of informa- tion about almost everything. [arch-general] gnome-session won't start [testing + gnome-unstable]

Hi I tried upgrading to gnome 3.6 using the gnome-unstable + testing repos. gdm did not start. So I started xinit manually. From xterm (started by xinit,) I tried to run gnome-session. I got this error: gnome-session: symbol lookup error: gnome-session: undefined symbol: g_spawn_check_exit_status I then tried to run metacity. I got this error: metacity: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_object_replace_qdata Please let me know if there is any more info you would like, or if there is any thing I can do to help. Here is what I uncommented in /etc/locale.gen: bg_BG CP1251 /etc/vconsole.conf: KEYMAP=bg-cp1251 FONT=Cyr_a8x16 FONT_MAP=cp1251 /etc/locale.conf: LANG="bg_BG.CP1251" LC_COLLATE="C" LC_TIME="bg_BG.CP1251" I ran locale-gen and locale -a as root. And after these steps I have readable cyrillic characters on tty1, and on all other ttys (tty2-6) I see non-readable symbols. I haven't been diligently following the mailing list, so perhaps I missed this. But given the recent "systemd is now the default on new installations" announcement, I'm wondering: what's the reasons for Arch making systemd the default going forward? The systemd wiki page gives a lot of technical information, but doesn't really clarify any of the motivations behind the move. Note: this msg is not any criticism of the Arch devs (I haven't yet formed *any* opinion on systemd), or intended to start a flamewar about the pros and cons of the switch. So just a simple RTFM response like "see this mailing list thread for background" would be perfect. Thanks, DR
