hello, I'm trying to set up my own DNS server but I can't... I registered ns1.mydomain.com as a nameserver and I ponted it to my VPS's IP. the I listed ns1.mydomain.com as the nameserver of mydomain.com. I don't know if I've done something wrong with my registrar or my zones/configs are wrong... the logs are absolutely empty! all my confs/zones: http://pastebin.com/z23HRyAh the ONLY thing altered in the confs is the domain thank you in advance! -- (\_ /) copy the bunny to your profile (0.o ) to help him achieve world domination. [arch-general] fish 2.0.0b2 in [community-testing]

As you probably know, fish release available in [community] is very old. Code hasn't been updated since 2009. Official website doesn't work currently, but there was the info that development is stalled. Alex Søndergaard suggested switching to Ridiculous Fish' fork[1]. It provides almost identical set of features, but I'm not sure about compatibility, that's why it goes to [community-testing] first. Current release "beta2" is rather pacman unfriendly, but incoming stable release will be versioned as "2.0", so say hello to fish-2.0b2. Happy testing! [arch-general] Systemd : Analysis of reactions of Users

Hi, DISCLAIMER: I support systemd but haven't switched to it yet, because I haven't had time till now, and also because I have some concerns. I like the ease-of-use that systems like PA/Systemd brings but I sincerely appreciate issues like the ones Ralf Mardorf and others have and I sincerely hope there are ways to address their problems well. I have been reading a lot about systemd discussions everywhere, on Fedora, on Arch and everywhere and I guess while the developers have been clear about why they would like to switch to systemd, the users have not been clear 1. Many times in discussions, some valid points by the user have been covered with a "resistance to change" flavor and hence, led to a rebuttal that has not addressed the valid point hidden within. 2. Also, developers work as a team while the users are scattered and hence, every user tries to make a point which is essentially similar to others and hence, gets a same rebuttal but the actual reason he posted the question was because he wanted to know something which was not clarified due to point 1. 3. However more failproof the new system might be, whenever you are shipping it on such a large scale, the guarantee that the users want is for the system to fail nicely. It doesn't matter to me if the systemd has less bugs than the init code, if I encounter that 1 bug, I want have a reasonable guarantee to get around it, and this is what is scaring most of the users I guess. So, I guess here are the points --------------------------- Apparent Simplicity --------------------------- Init scripts had text files while systemd will have binary files to load from. So, there is a point of error in converting the .conf to binary files and I guess, this worries users because, even if they do not know it, they are fearing that the text-to-binary conversion will not be proper (due to various reasons such as some user accidentally editing a file with gedit and setting different encoding and thousands of other reasons) and hence, will end up borking the system. Now I am not sure, since I have not actually used systemd, about how much this point is correct, since it depends a lot on the design of the systemd parser and how the output is, but I would like the following features for the same: 1. Systemd should overwrite the current binary files if and only if it can verify that the new files are correct. So, it can do something like regenerate the text from the binary and then check with the original text or some as the user if the information is correct. 2. Systemd should have a mechanism by which it can fallback to reading the text files and booting from it. I do not know if this feature is really useful since init scripts already do this and hence, you can make it fall back on initscripts instead, but the point is then I would then have to maintain two systems, one which I use regularly (systemd) and one which I do not, and when systemd fail, I would have to use the initscripts which I do not use regularly and hence is a big error-prone exercise. Hence, if the users can have that guarantee (which I think there is) that the systemd configuration files can be used by initscripts to boot an exact system (though slower then I guess) they will be satisfied. and hence, when people say that if systemd fails or you don't like it, just switch back to initscripts, they are not addressing the real concern of the users. ----------------------------------- Single File vs Multiple File ------------------------------------ Most of the users will access their rc.conf files once in a month or so once their system has been setup considerably. I on my personal laptop nowadays only look at rc.conf when there is a pacnew notification. For these users, till now rc.conf was the one-stop service so to say. This concept for them is similar to the one-desk customer service that banks provide where you can get almost all types of manipulations to your accounts at a single desk. This fact is very comforting. Point is at one glance, you can get all you want to know about the system. This is especially true in case of daemons, now with separate service files, you have to look in every service file to check if the files are correct. If there was a single command to print out all the boot info, then probably it would be great, but I guess this tool would be the same one that I described in point 1 in Apparent Simplicity. Then, after every edit and regenerate, I can test my files and satisfy myself that what I have typed is correct. ---------------- DAEMONS ---------------- With respect to daemons, the BEFORE and AFTER in the service files is redundant and though not likely to cause errors, likely to be inconsistent, because for every service file where a daemon "xyz" appears in AFTER, the corresponding daemon must appear in BEFORE in the service file for xyz. I am not quiet sure why this redundancy is there, you can simply have just "AFTER" variables and they should take care of all the dependencies I guess. [arch-general] Problems with mouse and keyboard on X

Hello, I am new to archlinux, coming from gentoo, and have successful installed the system so far. Now I have the problem that when I start X by using startx or startxfce4 (I have only tried this two) I have no keyboard or mouse. I can solve the problem by disconnecting and reconnecting mouse and keyboard. After that everything works fine until I restart my computer. To rule out problems with access rights I even used startx as root, but the same problem exisits. I suspect that something is wrong with udev (as I use evdev for mouse and keyboard) but so far I am not able to locate it. Has anyone some idea or lead for me? Greetings Sebastian Beßler

[arch-general] How do you extract version from pacman?

With the new virtualbox update I had to obtain virtualbox version in a script (and of course, virtualbox binary doesn't have a sane --version parameter...). Anyway, its pretty simple to pacman -Qi virtualbox | grep -e "^Version" | awk '{print $3}' | sed 's|-.||' Perhaps it may be nice to have a pacman flag to obtain just the version string. I'll file a feature request, but before that anyone has an comments on why it would be useless or a bad idea?

A major cups update hits testing. Cups has dropped native printer browsing support for Linux OS, you now need to run the avahi-daemon before you start cupsd. Make sure you also cleanup your cupds.conf. My server seems to print well. Clients can see the printers in the print dialog here. Please report broken stuff you may find to our tracker or upstream. Note: Please also test the systemd-socket patch. My server is running initscripts so I can't test it. It has become a mix of the Fedora and the Gentoo patch (no big differences). -Andy

[arch-general] problems installing package courier-authlib

Hey, I'm trying to install courier-authlib but after installation it says "error: command failed to execute correctly". It looks like it's installed but I also have issues trying to start authdaemond (chown: invalid user: 'courier:courier'). For any reason, it's expecting to have the courier user created and it's not. In the archwiki for postfix says nothing about creating that user. Regards. Any idea how to solve this? I'd appreciate your help! Matt. -- Live to fight another day.

Hello, folks Due to recent changes in arch linux, I have some qustion about new process of installation and configuration of arch linux. I am really not computer geek, so I apologize if I express anything incorrectly. First. About absence of core images. When I just read about it, I thought why they did it. But then I realize that arch is rolling release system after all. This fact means periodical and quite frequent updates, which are impossible without Internet connection. So if you would like to install Linux on computer without Internet, choose OS with fixed release cycle - all the system packages (as well as applications) will be on that distribution. So I am glad that now there is one universal iso-image instead of six. Second. About absence of AIF. I really sorry about it. As I said I am not so geeky to install everything with closed eyes. AIF helped me a lot. It gives me tips what to do next and how to do it. Now, when burned CD finished loading, I just see prompt to enter commands and nothing else. But I just do not know what to do next. So if I do not have installation guide previously printed on paper, I just become consused what to do next. So, I really hope that to the moment when next iso snapshot will be released, AIF will be fixed and included in that release. But for the present I would like at least to have installation guide included in installation iso (with a note where this guide resides) in order to switch to it during installation. Third. About systemd. As I understand from installation guide on Wiki all the configuration now is made not in rc.conf but in several config files. I do not know yet whether it is good or bad. But in Wiki I can read the following: 1) instead of NETWORKING section I should specify hostname in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts. Why should I duplicate information? The danger of need to duplicate information is that it have to be synchronized. 2) instead of LOCALIZATION section I should specify locale in /etc/locale.conf and /etc/locale.gen. Again why should I duplicate information? 3) instead of LOCALIZATION section I should specify timezone in /etc/timezone and /etc/localtime. And again the same question. Why? Besides, where should I specify my network connection settings? In what systemd-specific file? As I understand in ... rc.conf. And what about daemons? Where to specify them? Again in rc.conf? And now the main question. If new plan of reorganization of configuration files can not manage without rc.conf, why there is so need to split it? I hope you can make it clear, guys.
