I force updated glib and now I've got an awesome kernel panic! :) switch_root: failed to execute /sbin/init: no such file or directory any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Hello. Just done an install using arch-install-scripts, and it wasn't so bad. The only bad thing is that grub2 is not available. I busted my installed system trying to install grub 2.0rc1 (wrong UUID in grub.cfg file). I finally installed syslinux while trying to understand what happened. So, great tools, not really that hard to use. Here are my questions : 1) Any hope to get grub2 as default grub in a future version ? 2) What about GPT tools ? 3) What about tweaking /etc/rc.conf before first reboot ? [arch-general] ~2 sec delay for Sound events in TDE - need help solving

Guys, I have TDE building on fully updated Arch, but I'm trying to track down a 1-2 second delay I'm getting with sound events. This doesn't just affect the latest TDE, but also began to effect older installs a few months back. I have the default sound config presently. I have the following packages installed: alsa-lib 1.0.25-1 alsa-plugins 1.0.25-2 alsa-tools 1.0.25-1 alsa-utils 1.0.25-3 alsaplayer 0.99.81-4 libpulse 2.0-2 pulseaudio 2.0-2 pulseaudio-alsa 2-1 The mixer in TDE uses pulse with only a single record and playback volume adjustment. I have experimented with different /etc/asound.conf settings and differing settings in ~/.pulse (via the alsa, pulse & sound wiki pages), but have always found that the defaults work just about as good as anything. For some unknown reason, I get a slight delay between the triggering of a sound event and the actual sound. I understand this is due to different software wanting to control the hardware at the same time from the thread about skype audio from last week. What I need to know is whether anyone on the list has experienced this scenario before and has perhaps found a solution. I have the system hardware listed below. [arch-general] Kernel verbosity

Hi Everyone, I'm playing with a custom kernel just for the fun of it, Everything works fine except it's very noisy when it boots. I'm using the same loglevel (4) as the default kernel that is in the Arch repo. And I have turned off many debug options under kernel hacking section. It does quiet down when I add the "quiet" parameter to the kernel command line. What I was wondering is how the Arch kernel is keeping it quiet without using the command line parameter (quiet), is it using a patch for that or something? Thanks, P.s. Hi, I am unable to get custom .cls files detected by the latex program. I have a file "jbnotebook.cls" which works fine when it is placed in the same directory as the the file main.tex. So, the file itself is not a problem. Also, [me@localhost]$ kpsewhich -var-value=TEXMFHOME /home/jayesh/.local/share/texmf So far so good. I have placed my file jbnotebook.cls at the following location /home/jayesh/.local/share/texmf/tex/latex/jbnotebook/jbnotebook.cls Also, for sake of trying to make things work, I have the following file /home/jayesh/texmf/tex/latex/jbnotebook/jbnotebook.cls And texhash has been run on both the texmf folder and they contain ls-R which is correct. Now, [me@localhost]$ kpsewhich -var-value=TEXMF {/home/jayesh/.texlive/texmf-config,/home/jayesh/.texlive/texmf- var,!!/home/jayesh/.local/share/texmf,!!/etc/texmf,!!/var/lib/texmf,!!/usr/share/texmf,!!/usr/local/share/texmf,!!/usr/share/texmf- dist} And still when I run the latex command, it tells me that the jbnotebook.cls is not found. Hey all, I am setting up an archlinux on my laptop (Dell Latitude E4300) with Broadcom Wifi: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01) I had to load the firmware for the driver so I did from the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=21690 I can't seem to be able to get an IP. I am including the logs as well. I tried disabling the ipv6 with no luck (so I revert it). I tried with a usb wifi card and it's working fine. Any suggestions? Hello, I updated one machine following instructions on archlinux.org and the process was flawless. That machine was running the Arch kernel. I dare not do it on another machine running a custom kernel. Will a system update break the setup because /lib/modules contains a kernel not managed by pacman ? If so, how to proceed ? Should the custom kernel be removed first ? Thank you.

[arch-general] Installing without using AIF?

Given the significant changes to key packages in recent times as well as the main AIF developer leaving I thought I would start looking at how to do a clean install without reference to AIF. There are new isos now available which have dropped AIF in favour of the arch-install-scripts but as yet I have not seen much documentation with guidance on installs from scratch that would be easy to follow without leaving out key steps. Does anyone know of any new wiki entries or other step by step guides available that would allow someone like me with 10 years of linux experience, but with only experience of arch in the past year, to run a standard arch base install for a laptop or desktop, which has BIOS boot (no UEFI) but using grub2 (since that looks like the standard in the future) rather than grub, with standard old style partitioning (i.e. not GPT), and ending up with a dual boot system with its original Windows XP bootable as well as the base arch system bootable, and ready to then configure as a usable customised system later? All, After working through the glibc update on several boxes, there should be a _note_ added to the wiki. You should check the ownership of files in /lib _before_ attempting any part of the latest update with: $ find /lib -exec pacman -Qo -- {} + You will need to rebuild _all_ custom packages _before_ issuing: # pacman -Syu --ignore glibc Or you will be left _unable_ to rebuild the packages until you have finished the update due to the state of your system after pacman -Syu --ignore glibc. I know most of you know this, but for anyone who simply follows the wiki and gets to "Issue 2: The final "pacman -Su" still has conflicts in /lib" -- it will be too late at that point. At this point, just complete the update by whatever means necessary to get the remaining non-glibc owned files out of /lib, complete the update, then rebuild what you need. I didn't add the note to the wiki. I can, but don't want to do so until getting any feedback here. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
