[arch-general] How to install AfterShot Pro for 64-bit from deb?

Hi, I have been trying to install the AfterShot Pro from AUR packages, full story is here [1]. It uses RPM-packaged i386 binaries. Because I run Arch 64-bit, I'd prefer to install 64-bit binaries, but those are available as Linux Debian (64-bit) deb package [2] I've been trying to find out how to install .deb package on Arch, but all recipes I found are out of date now. Could anyone explain me how to install AfterShot from the deb package? I know arch tries to keep to upstream but their seems some discrepencies that you may or may not be aware of so thought I'd share. The crypt man page says glibc may not support blowfish (stronger than nists recommendation) and that seems true when used via the commandline (very short output). The arch wiki says you can use a library from AUR. There is also a sha512 arch wiki which says you should edit pamd.d/passwd from md5 to sha512 but the default seems to already be sha512, maybe it tries both as some distros default is now sha512 so no need anymore. It seems if you simply edit /etc/default/passwd to blowfish and reset your password, sha512 is used e.g. encrypted password beginning with $6 in /etc/shadow not $2 (blowfish) and logins work fine. I guess the /etc/default/passwd config file may be futurised or the config written before changing to SHA which was easier to implement and the wiki is out of date with the code?? -- Kc

[arch-general] BTRFS + Rollback + Subvolumes

Hello List! After a few years (like two?) of wandering around, I'm finally back using ArchLinux and wonder why I ever went on searching for something better in the first place. Feels good to be home.. Well, I installed ArchLinux a while back on my Laptop and switched yesterday to using btrfs as my fs for everything except boot, because of everything else being encrypted. Okay, I followed the wiki-article "Installing btrfs on root" (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_on_Btrfs_root) and everything went just fine (it does sometimes). So I now have a subvolume __active which represents /, one for home, one for usr and one for var. I then wanted to test the rollback-feature presented to me during boot and created a snapshot of the subvolume __active. I tried using this during, but it obviously fails, because of not having anything in /usr and /var and /home. So, my question (yes, finally) is: Am I missing something or is just not possible to use different subvolumes (like __active, home, usr, var) and being able to rollback your system during boot? As far as I know btrfs-snapshots are not recursive. So wouldn't it be better (being-able-to-rollback-wise) to just have one subvolume so that you can really rollback everything in case something went wrong? Or is there a way to combine the benefits of having different subvolumes and still being able to rollback the system? I hope I am making any sense.. It's still before the first cup of coffee, alas. Hello, systemd is not setting my console font. The following is the only relevant config I could think of: /etc/vconsole.conf : > KEYMAP=dvorak > FONT=ohsnap6x11r Using the command > setfont ohsnap6x11r works perfectly to change the font to that desired. Cheers, pants.

Guys, I have read the recent thread about glibc problems and I am totally confused about what I am still supposed to have in /lib... [arch-general] ConsoleKit replaced by systemd

Hi, I'm about to set up a new machine and want to make use of systemd. Currently I'm reading up on the topic as systemd changes quite a lot of things. Just recently I've realized that ConsoleKit is not maintained actively anymore and the focus is on systemd right now (see [1]). This is already mentioned in the wiki [2]. Unfortunately I couldn't find any statement as to whether Arch will follow along with this. I'm running GNOME right now and at least have two dependencies for ConsoleKit: gdm and gnome-session. I couldn't find anything in regard to this issue in the bug tracker, so I'm wondering whether there has been some discussion over that already? I know there have been some discussions about systemd in the past, but are there any definite plans to switch "completely" to systemd at some point in the future? It seems that the package "initscripts-systemd" is more or less on feature parity with "initscripts" already. The reason why I'm asking is that I don't think that this kind of "double tracked" approach we are currently following, will work very well in the long run, especially when systemd is superseding more and more other packages. Don't get me wrong: I'm really glad about the fact that Arch Linux is supporting systemd so well. By no means I want to depreciate the work you guys have done so far. I do absolutely think that we have to provide both solutions in order to provide a smooth upgrade path. But personally I think that at some point we have to make a choice - just for the sake of simplicity. Personally I would choose systemd ;).
