I'm trying to update the system, and cannot: # pacman -Su :: Starting full system upgrade... warning: shorewall: local (4.4.23.3-1) is newer than custom (4.4.12.1-1) resolving dependencies... looking for inter-conflicts... :: perl and Term-ReadLine-Gnu are in conflict (perl-term-readline). Remove Term-ReadLine-Gnu? [y/N] error: unresolvable package conflicts detected error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies) :: perl and Term-ReadLine-Gnu are in conflict (perl-term-readline) ~ This is an innovation indeed. What to do? I assume the package perl-term-readline install the Perl package Term::ReadLine. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The Perl package Term::ReadLine does, essentially, nothing. (http://search.cpan.org/~flora/Term-ReadLine-1.07/lib/Term/ReadLine.pm) This is a show-stopper. TIA Jorge Almeida

[arch-general] Gnome 3.2 - gdm login ignores disabled user list

The recent upgrade from 3.0 to 3.2 has caused the gdm login screen to display a list of user names despite /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list being set to true. Was working in 3.0. This has been reported upstream https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660660 Should I log this in FS and link to the upstream bug? Richard.

Hi, take for a spin gnome 3.2 from testing and report any packaging bugs to our tracker. TUs, check your packages and rebuild for eventually soname bumps(e.g evolution-data-server). NVIDIA users be aware that xorg-server 1.11 from testing is incompatible with the current nvidia driver, even with IgnoreABI. You can switch to nouveau or add xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-synaptics xorg-server-common xorg-server to Ignorepkg. -- Ionuț

Hi, I can't mount a whole bunch of CDs/DVDs I've burned back in the days I was using Mac OS X. Hi, I'm not a DE (desktop environment) user, and I'm not planning to become one. I'm pretty comfortable with plain fluxbox... However when people wonders about how to start on a linux kernel based OS, specially to be able to run on old or low end machines, they really expect a DE, not knowing that both major ones (gnome and kde) are really bloated and they better stay out of their way, :-) So LXDE sounds like the DE I'd like to experiment with, but I'd like to use fluxbox instead of openbox. I'm not familiar with LXDE, so perhaps a pointer to a tutorial or howto for this WM switch might be useful. I'd guess is not just calling startfluxbox in some configuration file (like ~/.xinitrc), but some care is required for keyboard management as well since fluxbox offer its own keybinding, :-) Also I'd liek to know what problems are to be faced because of using fluxbox before hand if possible... Any help will be greatly appreciated, :-) Thanks, -- Javier.

Hi, I recently went over all my packages in community, and have decided to orphan the following due to lack of interest and because I haven't used them in a long time celt - Low-latency audio communication codec extrema - Extrema is a powerful visualization and data analysis tool. ghdl - A complete VHDL simulator, using GCC technology. gnofract4d - A fractal browser with PyGTK gui grass - Geographic Information System (GIS) used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization. gtkwave - A wave viewer which reads LXT, LXT2, VZT, GHW and VCD/EVCD files gts - GNU Triangulated Surface Library. luakit - luakit is a highly configurable, micro-browser framework based on the WebKit web content engine and the GTK+ toolkit."Stable" release mpdscribble - An mpd client which submits track info to last.fm netbeans - Netbeans IDE development platform. protege - Free, open source ontology editor and knowledge-base framework wordpress - Blog Tool and Publishing Platform All of them are working as far as I know, and they have no outstanding bugs except a couple which are in the list of pushing the .desktop file upstream https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23387 (already reported) and luakit has an extremely minor upstream bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25761 which is also reported. [arch-general] remove grub from base group?

Since aif now supports syslinux and grub equally, does it make sense that grub no longer needs to be in the base group? syslinux isn't in base. I'll open an FS for this if that's wanted.

I have a very annoying problem with xmodmap: Inside X, in an xterm: $ echo $DISPLAY :1 In console (agetty1): $ echo $DISPLAY $ xmodmap .Xmodmap xmodmap: unable to open display '' $ xmodmap -display :2 .Xmodmap xmodmap: unable to open display ':2' Until now, everything as expected. The problem is: $ xmodmap -display :1 .Xmodmap $ echo $? 0 So, everything seems fine, but switching to the vt where X is I find that xmodmap didn't load anything. Note that if running "xmodmap .Xmodmap" from X it works. In console, I tried also setting the env variable DISPLAY (the only one relevant to xmodmap, according to the manual), to no avail. You might wonder why is this a problem, since it works from X. I have a xmodmap command in the startup file of the window manager (openbox). Other X related commands work, only xmodmap fails. It seems that xmodmap requires being run from an emulator inside an X session, which it's not supposed to. Any help about this essentially undocumented piece of software would be appreciated. Alternatively, anyone knows whether there is some alternative to xmodmap? xkb doesn't seem to be able to replace it, judging by what poor documentation there is out there. TIA Jorge Almeida
