[arch-general] Linux server crash causing router switch to stop working

Been experiencing a weird issue several times recently that's got me stumped. A couple of weeks ago, my entire home network went dead right in the middle of a zoom call. Same problem happened again late last night. The problem is intermittent/occasional: everything runs without issue for several days, then suddenly crashes. I figured the issue was a problem with my wifi router, but after much debugging I don't think that's the case. I have a new (Arch) linux server I built a few weeks ago. What seems to be happening is that my server crashes for some reason - and then looks like it's causing the ethernet LAN switch inside my router to stop working. (I verified that when I unplug the server's network cable the router starts working again, and when I plug it back in the router stops.) My best guess as to what's happening is that when the server crashes it's somehow either flooding the network, or sending out invalid network packets, and so making the router inoperable. I have no idea what could cause this, though, or how to fix it. (Or even if this is definitely the issue.) I also have no way to know if this is an issue with my server hardware vs. say an issue in a recent kernel upgrade, since the server is so new. Server is running Arch, and is kept very up to date. It's using the on-board LAN chip on the mobo - Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE (network module r8169, RTL8125B chip/firmware). Router is a Netgear R8000, running dd-wrt (r47097). Any suggestions welcome! Hi! Arch Linux has become my favourite pastime and passion and I'd like to donate to the project. I have looked at the options (card payment or PayPal) and haven't found the possibility to hide my real name as I am really not that keen on sharing my name on the public list of donors: https://archlinux.org/donate/ Unfortunately, I am not a James Smith or Caron Lewis, but have a uniquely identifiable combination of first and last name, that means anyone could look me up on Google, because surely there exists no other name like this in the world. This is actually what I tried: I picked some uniquely looking names from the donors page, put them into Google and of course archlinux.org shows up. You may call me fussy, but I don't like the idea of my real name being linked to any of my actual hobbies/interests online. It should be nobody's business to know what my hobbies are (employers, ex-partners, I-am-gonna-say-it-yes-the-government)! I get it that archlinux.org wants to show appreciation by publicly sharing the list of donors, but I do not want it! Please, I beg you, do enable donors to opt out of being on the public list! [arch-general] Power Management on Thinkpad 5W30

I can't get power management working on my laptop. I have tlp-stat installed and it's showing a 1.9% capacity, but I don't think that's an accurate figure. This is a fairly new install. It worked fine under windows. I've been trying a lot of things, but at this point it feels more like I'm just going to do more damage trying things than actually making any progress on my own. One thing I don't know about is if this model supports the thinkpad_ec kernel module, because I cant get it to load. I'm also running the hardened kernel, and don't know if that's supported either. I'm not sure at this point that thats even the right direction to be going in. But this https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Laptop/Lenovo#W_series says that power management is supported, and this https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Tp_smapi#W_series seems to indicate that tp_smapi -doesn't- work with this model, but that's a little unclear to me, especially since that page was last updated in 2016. When I run any git-annex command using git-annex-10.20220127-16 I get: /usr/bin/git-annex: /usr/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.34' not found (required by /usr/bin/git-annex) The glibc version I have installed is 2.33-5, which is current according to https://archlinux.org/packages/?sort=&q=glibc&maintainer=&flagged= . The previous version git-annex-10.20220127-15 works fine.

Hi all, I want to donate to Arch Linux. However, the existing options both take high fees (SPI: Transaction fees via PayPal, Click&Pledge: 2.75% platform + 2,5 % credit card fee ) and I don't want to finance PayPal. What about adding Liberapay [1] <https://liberapay.com/> as a non-profit donations platform? They don't take any monthly fees <https://liberapay.com/about/faq#how-funded> [2], just pass on the payment process fees. For instance, Europeans can use SEPA transactions (without any fees). What do you think about it? PS: I also posted this [3] in the forum, but noticed shortly after that another thread about donation remains unnoticed by the people in charge. That can be useful, but list slicing also has a dramatic effect on the community. There are always questions that don't fit in one list or the other. The problem with separating lists is it tends to reduce the number of knowledgeable devs participating in general list QA. Which in turn transforms the general list from a place where knowledge of all topics is present to one where questions linger without an answer. This isn't an Arch problem yet, but I've watched over the last decade how creation of sublists and fragmentation of the openSUSE list has all but put a nail-in-the-coffin of the openSUSE community. Traffic did fall dramatically -- but so did users of the distro. Worth keeping in mind when discussing whether current or additional sublists are needed. Just my $.02 from watching the changes, and cause and effect, distros have gone through for the past 20+ years. There is nothing wrong with specialized developer lists -- so long as it doesn't result in brain-drain from the general list that impacts the general list usefulness. All, The wiki has become almost impossible to help with. After experiencing an error transferring to my Arch samba shares and finding the solution on Apple.Stackexchange.com I was adding that short section to the end of the troubleshooting entires. However, despite providing an edit summary and complying with the remaining 2 fundamental rules, I cannot save the edit. I get the Error: Error: Warning: You have not provided an edit summary, which is an enormous help for other users who want to review your changes, see ArchWiki:Contributing#The 3 fundamental rules. Over the past 11 years the wiki has increasing become hostile to user contributions. I hope this is a temporary bug. In the past the community made our Archwiki the best Linux distro wiki going by keeping it current and providing solutions to current problems. The Archwikin was a one-stop-shop. If the community can no longer contribute, it will cease to be so. [arch-general] cups hangs while adding a new printer

Hi, on a Thinkpad X270 I'm trying to add a Epson XP 245 using epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2. Unfortunately cups just hangs with "Unable to get list of printer drivers", "lpinfo -m" just hangs and after some time outputs "Success". Searching around showed people already had this issue with foomatic, but neither foomatic nor gutenprint are installed. So the explanation of "generating the ppd list takes too long" should not fit here. And for adding more confusion, on another system where even gutenprint is installed, it works fine - so it's not a general issue. Any ideas? Best Regards Bjoern

[arch-general] Bazel, reproducible builds and the out-of-date packages fcitx5-mozc & fcitx-mozc

Hello, This is a request concerning two out-of-date packages in [community] called fcitx5-mozc and fcitx-mozc. I’m not sure if this is the proper channel to address such things, if it isn’t then I apologize. Fcitx/Fcitx5 is an input engine like IBus, and Mozc is a Japanese IME. There used to be more Mozc packages in [community] (e.g. ibus-mozc) but they were demoted to the AUR since a good while back, the reason being that upstream Mozc has opted to adopt Bazel as its build system, which among other things is a pain to make compatible with Arch’s reproducibility goals. It’s the same thing that has also happened with other packages like e.g. the one for Anki, which was also recently demoted to the AUR for the exact same reason. The result of all this though is that, while these other Mozc packages have in the meantime been adopted and kept up-to-date in the AUR by several people, the fcitx5-mozc and fcitx-mozc packages have been kept outdated in [community] since May 2021, in their last known working GYP version (GYP was the build system used before Bazel but was deprecated in favor of the latter). I understand that Bazel is… not a great piece of software, to put it mildly, and that upstream’s choice to use it is less than optimal; but keeping a package in an almost year-old outdated version is even less optimal in my opinion. Not to mention that even though for most people this kind of package (an input engine add-on for a non-Latin writing system) is obscure at best, for some of us it’s part of our everyday life and may even be crucial (for work or education purposes, etc) and thus keeping it up-to-date with upstream is a very desired goal. My request is, since the maintainer of fcitx5-mozc and fcitx-mozc is probably not interested in updating these two packages to their current upstream versions, that they be demoted to AUR packages so they can be adopted and updated by other interested parties (that would be me). Or, if for whatever reason this isn’t an option, that either an effort is made to update them in situ to their current upstream versions (if such an effort is not already underway) or at least that they are renamed to something different (e.g. fcitx5-mozc-legacy and fcitx-mozc-legacy) so their current names can be adopted and used by new and up-to-date packages in the AUR.
