(is there ?) why not wait until python 3.1 ? i really fear that a great number of software will break because they will try to use /usr/bin/python and except a python 2 to be there. What about the package in unsupported that will not be upgraded asap as the others in extra or core or community.

Hello all, I've reworked the initscripts-splash patch by hand into the latest version of initscripts. I've also updated the fbsplash package to the latest version of splashutils. So far, I've been using it for about a week now with my laptop, and have encounted no problems at all. Splash even works on hibernate with uswsusp-splash from the AUR. (Haven't tried tuxonice because I don't use it) Here's links to the updated PKGBUILD tarballs. http://www.fallendusk.org/arch/initscripts-splash.tar.gz http://www.fallendusk.org/arch/fbsplash.tar.gz I'm using my own custom kernel with the fbcondecor patch (makes splash load as soon as kernel does) but from what I understand fbsplash should work without, just not until after init loads. I would be more than glad to maintain either of these packages if the current maintainers would like to hand them off. :) --Greg

I do however enable it using key commands, and use nowrap in nanorc (since wrapping is so frustrating when it comes to configuration etc). I'd prefer if nano -w was used in the installer, or nowrap in the default nanorc. Better than disabling a feature completely. -- Anders Bergh

Nice idea but I just to give some tip, simple is better. I think the colours even seeming logical are too many. [arch-general] netcfg 2.1.1 problem

Hello, after upgrading netcfg from 2.0.6 to 2.1.1 I can no longer connect to my wireless router (luckily downgrading back solves it). I know I should file a bug report and I will, I only wanted to ask what information is relevant, for output of which programs I should look, etc. Unfortunately I know almost nothing about wireless networks or how netcfg really works but when I was trying to manually do the interesting steps that I found in /usr/lib/network/wireless.subr, it seemed to me that the problem occurs in wpa_check() where wpa_cli status always returns SCANNING until it all times out. For some reason this doesn't happen with netcfg 2.0.6 so I suppose the previous steps that prepare everything do something in a different way. Ondřej -- Cheers, Ondřej Kučera

Hello! Since the last pcmciautils upgrade to version 15-1, my wifi card has stopped working. It is a very old Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B, but it was working fine until the upgrade, and it has worked again when I downgraded pcmciautils to previous version 14. I have included this package in IgnorePkg, but this is only a temporal solution. Does anybody know what can cause this problem? Do you need more information? Best Regards, Guillermo Leira

Anyone know what's up with the easynews pacman mirror? Every file access that pacman attempts fails like this: error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirrors.easynews.com : Success Anyone know the cause and/or who to contact over there to get it fixed? It's usually a great mirror, and very reliable, and I use it as my primary. TIA, DR

Hi list, I'm new to Arch. The other day, I downloaded the ISO mentioned in the subject line. I remastered the image, because I needed some extra programs. I'm blind. I added a screenreader and a text-to-speech engine to the ISO, so that I could have spoken feedback during the install. I also added alsa-utils, alsa-lib, and a few miscellaneous packages. I burned the CD and booted the system. Arch started talking to me, and everything seemed ok. After a few minutes, I started noticing strange behavior. The system froze when I tried to execute a command. For instance, after typing "ps" at the bash prompt, the system locked up. It was unable to load the ps executable or one of its shared libraries from the CD. Sometimes, it would print the message "input-output error", and return to a working bash prompt. I could hear my CD-ROM drive clicking whenever it tried to load the executable. It just sat there for five or more minutes, spinning and clicking. I also noticed that Arch is writing data to its unionfs. Most of the data seems to be written to /var/log. Should a live CD be writing to logfiles? My problems could be caused by one of several things. 1. A broken CD-ROM drive. (I doubt it, because the drive is 3 weeks old). 2. A mistake while remastering the ISO. 3. Some sort of error from the original ISO. Has anyone else had trouble with this image? If not, then the issue must be caused by my hardware or personal configuration. Regards, -- Chris
