[arch-general] ArchLinux Installation with full encryption and uefi but without lvm

Hello, i have one question. Is it possible to install ArchLinux on an UEFI System with full encryption BUT without lvm? I found no tutorial to do this. I also like to do this without grub. But i don’t understand the differences between systemd / systemd-boot and bootctl. ☹ My english is good, but not so good. ☹ I am sorry for this. [arch-general] pacman trust DB issue

Good afternoon, I'm having an issue with pacman. When running pacman to e.g. do an upgrade I get the following error message: error: cifs-utils: signature from "Tobias Powalowski <tobias.powalowski(a)googlemail.com>" is unknown trust :: File /var/cache/pacman/pkg/cifs-utils-6.11-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst is corrupted (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature)). Do you want to delete it? [Y/n] I checked system time which should be fine, so I did a pacman-key --init pacman-key --populate archlinux this ends with the following error: ==> ERROR: Trust database could not be updated. [arch-general] PA over JACK: excessive work?

Hi, I'm using PulseAudio over JACK and noticed in htop that while not doing nothing PA works much more than when idle alone, is this normal/right? This is what I do: Close everything that uses audio. Start JACK through qjackctl. $ pulseaudio --kill $ pulseaudio --start (So, PA now works as some kind of bridge redirecting audio through JACK.) $ pactl load-module module-jack-sink $ pactl load-module module-jack-source (So I have general sink/source ports to make connections.) But then I check htop and PA is working all the time. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks a lot in advance.

[arch-general] FreeCAD and KiCAD depend on different opencascade versions

Ohai, I'd like to use FreeCAD and KiCAD on the same system but I can't install them both from the official repos because kicad depends on opencascade und freecad depends on opencascade74. I can't install both because these two opencascades don't like to be installed together. Is their a solution in sight? Can we recompile freecad against the newer opencascade? [arch-general] CPU spikes when lid closed

I've been having an odd problem. My laptop works like a charm on its own. However, when it's connected to a USB-C dock and screen, suddenly apps that were working great start eating up lots of CPU. (Such as Firefox, Thunderbird, and Zoom.) After a bit of debugging, I realized that the issue isn't even whether I'm connected to the dock, but rather whether the laptop lid is open or closed: close the lid and all those apps eat up CPU; open the lid and CPU drops and everything is groovy. I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing this, and my searching hasn't been able to turn up a clear cause or solution. Would anyone happen to have experienced the same issue, or be able to point me in the right direction as to the cause? I'm running XFCE, with the display settings set to "mirror displays" (i.e., the internal laptop screen and the external HDMI monitor). Thanks, DR

[arch-general] General protections faults / kernel panics with the Apple Magic Trackpad 2

Hi all. I think I need some help with debugging an issue I have. I recently bought an "Apple Magic Trackpad 2" for reducing strain on my hand (since I have some RSI[0] issues currently), which is supported in Linux since version 4.20[1]. After connecting it to my laptop it worked instantly at first, but "sometimes" un- and replugging the trackpad crashes my system. Often it works fine, but every now and then it triggers `general protection faults` (often while opening big applications like Firefox), causes my status bar to hang up, and usually ends in a freeze. Sometimes, just before the freeze I get thrown back to the console and see a kernel panic at the end of the log. The laptop is a Thinkpad X200 running stock BIOS, Arch Linux and sway, with microcode updates enabled. I could also reproduce the issue with Gnome on Wayland. On Xfce I could not reproduce the issue, and also not on Fedora (which I installed on the same laptop to the same SSD, for testing). I'm using the trackpad only via the USB cable, not via bluetooth. Attached is a snippet from the dmesg output with debug logging enabled (appended `debug` on the kernel cmdline) showing some of the protection faults. I uploaded the full dmesg output here [2]. In this specific dmesg output, most of the protection faults happened concurrently while I was opening Firefox (several times to provoke the crash). A photo of the kernel panic can be found here [3]. This kernel bug report[4] and related arch report[5] seem related to the issue, maybe it's even the same issue? However, the kernel bug report mentions that the issue only affects linux >=5.8.7. In my case, I could reproduce the issue with the following linux versions (installed from the Arch Linux archive): 4.20.0 4.20.1 4.20.3 4.20.7 5.0.0 5.0.13 5.4.74 5.2.0 5.8.6 5.8.7 5.8.8 5.9.2, 5.9.4 5.10rc-2 The USB ID of the trackpad is 05ac:0265. Because I'm very inexperienced with kernel debugging I would appreciate any help/pointers to what would be wise to test next. If this is likely to be an issue with the Linux kernel and not arch-related (unsure, since I could not reproduce it on other distros), please tell me so and I will post to the kernel bug tracker instead. hello. GnuPG 2.2.25 has been released it fixes bug which affects me. but arch only has Version 2.2.24-1 in testing. my question is why it haven't been updated? if the maintainer simply does not have time yet, then I understand, but maybe there is another reason? -- Sincerely, Alexander.

[arch-general] Translation not fully working with gnome and gdm

Hello everyone, i have a problem with my arch linux system running with gnome and gdm. In some applications, or on the right click menue all entries are not translatet. So, normaly i have configured my system in german. In most of applications and menues there still working fine. But some cases i have no translation yet :-( What is the problem? Is there a problem with any dependencies? Thanks for help

I2'm trying to fully make sense of the boot process with systemd. I've read various pages from the manual, including bootup(7). There are two points I don't fully understand. * Filesystem mounts during initrd The man page, under the initrd section, says: "systemd detects that it is run within an initrd [...]. The bootup process begins identical to the system manager bootup (see above) until it reaches basic.target. [...] Before any file systems are mounted, it must be determined whether the system will resume from hibernation or proceed with normal boot." In my mind, that part self-contradicts when both saying that 1) the bootup proceeds identical to the system manager bootup and 2) a determination on whether to mount file systems is made /after/ basic.target. This is because some file systems (including, in most cases, the root file systems) would have been mounted before local-fs.target, which is ordered before basic.target. So either the process is not really identical until basic.target, or I'm getting something wrong. * Instances I gather that the systemd which runs inside the initrd is a completely separate instance from the one which then runs in the booted system. Which implies - as discussed above - that the system initialization sequence from beginning to basic.target actually happens twice. Does this means than any initialization units which could potentially be run twice - once in the initrd and once in the booted system - should be instrumented to avoid running their logic twice (in the cases where that's not needed or even harmful)? Let's consider for example an hypothetical service with "WantedBy=cryptsetup-pre.target", which decrypts a keyfile using an hardware token. This keyfile is then consumed by systemd-cryptsetup-generator with keyfile-erase=on. What happens if the service is run twice, but the key is consumed only the first time? A decrypted keyfile remains in the system. What's the correct approach to avoid such a scenario? Riccardo
