Its fairly non-trivial to build a static pacman since we don't have archive libs readily available for the 38 packages it depends on (at least that I can see). I wonder given the build tooling if : a) providing static pacman package would be a possibility? or b) provding 'archive' lib packages might be doable e.g. glibc-archive, openssl-archive, gpgme-archive ... Both seem painful: - (a) means either do (b) first or build archive versions of all 38 shared libs as part of pacman build. The latter approach is one taken by the AUR package. - (b) means changing the PKGBUILD of quite a lot of packages - and if we go this route then should it be done for other lib packages as well? Pro: While it's rarely needed it could be very useful. i.e. Protect against a Low frequency but high impact risk. Package RSS feed problems?

Arch Admins, The last package update notification I received was xdg-desktop-portal-kde 6.1.3-1 x86_64 sent Fri, 19 Jul 2024 10:11:46 +0000 and arriving Fri, 19 Jul 2024 05:16:15 -0500. Is there an issue with the RSS servers or did they change IP addresses then? (which may have them blocked at the firewall) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Steam Accessibility

Howdy, In Arch, Steam is completely inaccessible with Orca, nothing reads at all. It was fixed briefly last year, but broke again after about two weeks. I figured this was the company's doing, but I recently found out that it works on Void Linux. I have a couple of friends who run Void, and they can access it just fine with the --bigpicture flag. The weird thing is, as far as I know, it only works in Void, not any other distro. I know it's not working in Debian, Ubuntu, Slint, and Fedora. My question is, does anyone know what Void is doing different from literally everyone else to get this working, and is it something I can replicate in Arch? Having downloaded the torrent and burned the iso to a dvd I verified the torrent using sha256sum but apparently that wasn't enough since the installation broke part of the way through which means I ought to have used the gpg verification that is available online. What is done with those asc files to verify a download? How to start mplayer with radio (.pls) url over ssh and have it play?

All, I know little about audio, but I'm trying to help my kids configure a radio stream. I normally use this media box via X desktop, but wanted to just play the stream via mplayer starting it over ssh -- that didn't work no matter what -ao I specify. However, if I open an x-term on the box from the desktop and enter the same url there - presto, the sound plays, and everything works. Since I normally use this box headless, how do I start mplayer over ssh and have the sound play on the remote box? Entering the following through the x-term from the desktop works just fine: mplayer -loop 0 -playlist http://playerservices.streamtheworld.com/pls/KDAQHD2.pls (it's classical) Is there a config somewhere where I can tell it to start mplayer the same from ssh as it does when started from the desktop? The new openssh works just fine and this is just a little note to those of us with remote machines. After updating both client and remote machine(s) its important to restart sshd. If you don't restart sshd, and then attempt to ssh into the remote, it may fail with: kex_exchange_identification: read: Connection reset by peer -- Gene

JDK/JRE and older Java versions

Hello, as a Java developer, I sometimes need to do compatibility checking using older versions, often using JRE, while I need a JDK for development. When I tried to update arch linux now, I found I cannot start any update because the update is blocked by setting JRE and JDK as conflicting packages. I tried to only install JDK 21, but the update is still being blocked because of my older versions of the JRE. Why do You block any software installation? I don't like the idea to enforce me to use any specific software, or to remove any specific one. Is there any possibility to remove the lock-in? Kind regards, Peter

git server changes - how to allow https AND ssh now that /srv/git/xxx.git must be owned by http?

All, After recent git update, read only repos hosted on a local Apache server could no longer pull over https. (gitweb remained fine) Repositories closed read/write over ssh were fine. On the server the repositories under /srv/git were owned david:david (me). However, after the git change, git refused to serve over https unless the directories under /srv/git were owned by http. Fine, change made - but now repos cloned read/write over ssh fail because the directory under /srv/git is no longer owned by me. How do you make git repositories hosted on my local server allow clone/pull over https AND allow me to still close read/write over ssh? Catch 22, unless /srv/git/xxx.git is http:http, https fails unless /srv/git/xxx.git is david:http, ssh fails Anybody else caught be this? The server is configured per https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Git_server and the scm-git.com links. The "Note: Make sure that Apache can read and write to your repositories." seems incomplete. It's not just "read and write" it is "must own" for https and "can't own" for ssh? How to solve? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Request to cherry-pick commit fixing RMB issue for Non-Removable Media in Linux Kernel 6.10-rc4

Hi all, as of linux v6.9.*, a regression has been introduced where the removable media bit (RMB) was set for all devices that are hot-pluggable. The bit does not accurately indicate that a device is removable. Therefore, this issue has been addressed and fixed in commit `a6a75e`[0] which was merged under the tag 6.10-rc4[1]. Is it possible to cherry-pick `a6a75e` and release an update prior to the full 6.10 release? Thank you for your consideration. Best regards J.
