[arch-general] Wireless-N 300 [Broadcom BCM43231] - FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper

Guys, I hope somebody can point me in the right direction. I have a small dell I moved into our TV console to use as a media center box. I installed a wireless usb adapter 'WNA3100(v1) Wireless-N 300 [Broadcom BCM43231]' to join the box to our wireless network. The box dual-boots and works fine under xp, so after reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless and not finding the model in the kernel driver, I decided to try ndiswrapper. I have run into an issue that I'm stuck on. [21:39 supersff:/home/david/cnf] # ndiswrapper -l bcmwlhigh5 : driver installed device (0846:9020) present [21:40 supersff:/home/david/cnf/netgear/Netgear] # depmod -a [21:40 supersff:/home/david/cnf/netgear/Netgear] # modprobe ndiswrapper FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/3.1.5-1-ARCH/extramodules/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko.gz): Invalid argument I'm not sure if this is a ndiswrapper problem, a modprobe issue or a driver problem? ndiswrapper shows the driver installed, but for some reason it seems to be choking on the compressed module and throwing the invalid argument error. Anybody have any thoughts on this? I searched the bugs, but didn't find anything on ndiswrapper or modprobe. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] libgsf update

What is the proper procedure for updating libgsf. Per the commit message libgnome-gsf was dropped because upstream dropped it. When trying to update the following error occurs. error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: libgsf-gnome: requires libgsf=1.14.21. I realize I can complete the update by pacman -Suf or pacman -Rdd libgsf-gnome then install the libgsf update but would think this would be handled by an install file included with the package. I would prefer not to bork my box so I thought I would ask first for a change. Thanks for your assistance. Myra -- Life's fun when your sick and psychotic!

glibc-2.14.1-3 broke time display for me. It displays UTC regardless of /etc/localtime or TZ environment variable. All, I haven't seen tpowa's normal kernel signoff, so just dropping a note it's good on multiple x86_64 and i686 boxes here. Only issue this time, which I haven't seen in the past 4-5 kernels, was the x86_64 MSI box that had a problem with the boot image being placed in a location that leaves the box unable to boot with grub. This is just a Russian Roulette issue with this one box. All others server & desktop installs updated fine. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Accented characters in X terminal?

I just noticed that I no longer get accented characters in my terminals (I've tested lxterminal and gnome-terminal so far). Instead of the Swedish characters "åäö" I get "???". Far from ideal. This used to work a while ago (we're talking days, possibly weeks). As you notice it works well in non-terminals (like in Chromium where I've writing this). Anyone else seeing the same behaviour? [arch-general] How do I uncomment a locale?

Hi, I am busy installing Arch core and am stuck at configuring the locale-gen part of the process. I am asked to uncomment the locales I need. Does this mean to delete them? There is a long list of them and I presume I need to delete all except the Australian ones (in my case). Do I simply delete them from this screen? Maybe it could be useful for them when deciding which new packages to support and which one to drop from the repository. Hello, I'm a recent Arch user, a refugee from Ubuntu. I was attracted to Arch because I was tired of Ubuntu forcing their new software on me -- it seemed the Arch way was to allow you to use bleeding edge if you wanted it, but to not fork upstream. So it was with some surprise that I discovered that Arch made /usr/bin/python point to something other than Python 2. This differs from every other system (not only other Linuxes, but also [as I learned from bug reports I received] OS X and even python.exe on Windows). I appreciate that y'all want to use the bleeding edge, and it completely consistent with my understanding of Arch that you would only provide Python 3 by default as well as write your system scripts use Python 3. (I write this mail with some trepidation as I fear a response like "STFU noob Arch is bleeding edge", which is emphatically not a response to the issue I'm actually raising.) What I don't understand is why you're manually patching upstream software to rewrite references from /usr/bin/python to /usr/bin/python2. This sort of forking is exactly the sort of divergence (like how Ubuntu modified their GTK to add their own specific hooks) that I was fleeing from when I came to Arch. :( You can see in the references below that it appears this is contrary to how upstream thinks it should work. It means that I can't download any random project (such as Chromium) and build it without first applying Arch-specific patches. And upstreams like Chromium can't change to support Arch's divergence without breaking their code on non-Arch systems. As a software developer, I am now getting contacted by users where my software doesn't work on Arch. I even applied a patch submitted by an Arch user to make my code use "python2" only to discover it broke my software on Mac and Windows. So my questions for you are 1) Is it intentional that I am unable to use software from upstream like Django unmodified? Am I expected to only install software from the Arch repositories, where it has been patched by Arch devs to work on Arch? (See below for more on Django.) 2) Should I change the software I write to attempt to detect when I'm on an Arch system and adjust scripts/etc. accordingly? (I can't just "fix it" because there is no /usr/bin/python2 on existing systems like Macs.) Both of those seem pretty unsatisfactory. Help! Here are some additional references, if they help you any. - Upstream Python dev believes that code that uses /usr/bin/python when it wanted Python 3 is wrong: http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2009-April/088864.html - According to Google's Code search, there are likely around 80,000 existing Python scripts that are broken by this change.
