[arch-general] Tasks for newbie at online bug squashing (during Archcon)?

Dear Archers, I've seen there will be an online bug squashing with Archers worldwide during Archcon on July 22 and 23 <http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=83844>. I've set some time apart to join the fun. However, I am an Arch newbie, though long standing Linux user. What will there be for me to do? Can you find me some trivial tasks? Most bugs I find in flyspray are beyond my capabilities -- X.org flaws or missing hardware support. I think I could update simple package builds, or correct a wrong path here and there. Apart from that, I am quite good at writing documentation. Should I comb the Arch wiki? Do I need to have a spare Arch system at hand to test things? Maybe someone could take this newbie by the hand? I just performed the switch to https only on bbs! I also adjusted some internal URLs, so all files will be properly fetched via https directly. http is redirected automatically. Note that the navbar links on Archweb and all other sites still point to http, but that is redirected automatically. There is a catch: 1) Apache configures SSL per-vhost. That means that even though we have a wildcard certificate, the browser must support SNI for name-based vhosts to work. All clients that are not SNI-capable will be redirected to www instead. 2) wget doesn't like wildcard certificates. That means you need to use --no-check-certificate with wget. 3) Our certificate is from CACert. AFAIK, this is not included in many browsers by default. If you use Arch Linux, at least everything that uses the OpenSSL certificate store and all Mozilla browsers are CACert-enabled - on other operating systems, our certificate might show up as untrusted. Let me know if any of the above (especially 1) cause any problems.

[arch-general] legacy ATA -> AHCI switch after installation

My mainbord is dying, so I plan to replace it during this weekend. Originally the installation of the OS (Arch of course) was performed with my sata HD in "legacy ATA mode" set in the BIOS. I'm thinking this time to use native AHCI mode for the hard disks - no real need, I'm just curious. Apart from the other issues related to a "motherboard transplant" I'm already familiar with, do you think that changing the hard drive mode will give me particular troubles? IIRC, the ahci kernel module is normally loaded alongside the others "ata/pata related", so maybe a simple rebuild of the ramdisk is all that I need. Guys, Here is a short list of firefox themes that work well with 3.6. If you haven't tried some of these, they're worth a look. Note: 'Oskar' is just there as an example of how wild and animated a firefox theme can get. The theme is very well done, but I couldn't use it -- it would drive you blind with all the flashing lights. I've left the list in a graphic format so the icons associated with the themes are recognizable. To get them all, a simple advanced search for "Themes", 100 per page, sort by name, modified in the last 6 months will do it. Enjoy. [arch-general] kernel26-2.6.34.1 - won't boot - stuck at "Setting up UTF-8 mode" [Downgrade to kernel26-2.6.34-2 OK]

Guys, I have managed to find a work-around to the latest kernel failing to boot on my Toshiba laptop. Before downgrading, I tried chrooting the system and rebuilding the initramfs, but no luck it stopped at the same place on boot -- Setting up UTF-8 mode. So I booted to the dual-install media, chrooted the system and downgraded to kernel26-2.6.34-2. This kernel boots fine. There is a problem with kernel26-2.6.34.1-1-x86_64. Since I can't boot it, I'm not sure what testing I can do, but if you can think of one, I'm happy to run it. This laptop is a Toshiba 205d. It hasn't ever had a problem with any other Arch or SuSE kernel, so I'm not sure what to tell you. I've posted the dmidecode information in case that will help. [arch-general] No Compiz with current Kernels - but compiz with Linux alchemy 2.6.32-lts OK - Huh?

Guys, On my box I continue to have problems with the current kernels on, booting lts works fine with compiz - how is that so? IIRC - lts used to be cli only, now it boots into runlevel 5 just fine. Any thoughts on why compiz won't run on 2.6.34-2 or 2.6.34.1-1? I'll keep tinkering, but any help would be appreciated... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I tried to pull down an abs update a few minutes ago and wound up getting everything but the "community," "any," and "local" directories completely removed from my /var/abs directory. I deleted and re-updated a few minutes later but still got nothing but the "community" and "any" repositories from the download. Any idea what's going on?

If a symlink such as /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxx is provided on the kernel cmdline, resolve it and mount that device instead of the symlink. This prevents some ugliness in the output of commands such as mount or df.
