[arch-general] Gstreamer good and good plugins without GNOME and some other dependencies

The motivation behind creating these packages was to be able to use gstreamer based apps without GNOME dependencies. In my case I wanted to be able to use XFCE's media player Parole and the Decibel Audio player. Here are the packages: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36635 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36636 Compile time support removed: -OSS support -ESD support - seriously does anyone really use ESD any more? -gconf support -aalib support -libcaca support Make and binary dependencies removed: -libsoup-gnome - this is the worst culprit in my opinion -esound -libcaca -gconf -aalib Anything else will depend on the libraries you have installed. On my system for example the souphttpsrc module is built as I have Midori installed which has a libsoup dependency via Webkit. HAL support has not been removed. XFCE still relies on HAL I believe and when XFCE 4.8 comes out (it won't use HAL) the HAL dependency will be removed from my PKGBUILD. In the mean time you can edit the PKGBUILD yourself. I also had to split the packages as the AUR doesn't support split packages yet. Due to this you'll have to compile the whole source twice unfortunately. If you use an AUR helper you'll also download the source code twice too so you may want to run makepg manually. I've compiled and tested the packages on my X86-64 system and they work for me. Could be I'm missing something here... But shouldn't 'pacman -S eterm' put executable somewhere in the standard path??? This was done using a root shell in a konsole terminal under E17 on my recently updated Arch installation... I did search the wiki for eterm just in case there was something about eterm that requires more than a simple pacman install. Didn't find anything useful. Am I missing something obvious here??? [arch-general] stability from pm-suspend ?

I've been using pm-suspend for temporarily shutting down the computer for later use, but now I raised the question whether it is safe or stable to do so at a constant basis. That is, seldom real reboots and often just suspend. For me the ratio of reboot and suspend is like 1:5. As you know that suspend don't really unmount the drives to read-only before it goes into suspension, when resumption had failed, you usually need to repair it and check for errors. This is at least the case for me when I use ext4. Even if it did resume successfully, I started to wonder if it also would harm the filesystems. I really like to hear some experiences whether that you have been using ACPI S3 kernel suspension for quite some time now, and feels it is really stable and safe to use, or that, you had ran into troubles using them. -- 李彥學 (Ian-Xue Li) http://b4283.ath.cx A student.

[arch-general] HAL dependencies

I've recently started using Xorg 1.8 from the [xorg18] repo to finally be able to get rid of HAL. Xorg is working fine, but I want to remove the remaining packages that depend on HAL. It looks like there are only 3: gnome-vfs, gstreamer0.10-good-plugins, and vlc. I can use ABS to rebuild these without HAL, but I'm concerned that these packages may actually need it. Has anyone else stripped HAL completely out of their Arch install? -- The world is full of tough guys. It doesn't need me to be one, too.

Without that resume is not possible as the "resume image" is stored at encrypted disk. The other suff is solved by some DE such as KDE, that can be configurred to lock your session when suspending. I was wondering why I was not able to login to a remote arch server. I don't know how it could have happened, last thing I did was a "pacman -Suy" which normally doesn't have such disastrous effects... Any idea how to fix this?

[arch-general] Serial To USB Adapter

Guys, I have a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter. Now I am trying to be able to connect to a Cisco switch via console serial cable using the Minicom utility. My problem is I don't know how to tell Minicom that my serial device is connected to /dev/ttyUSB0 or maybe it already knows & I just don't know how to use it... Code: [carlos@tuna ~]$ dmesg | grep tty console [tty0] enabled 00:06: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 5) is a 16550A usb 5-2: Keyspan 1 port adapter converter now attached to ttyUSB0 Does anyone know how I can tell my Arch system that I have a USB to serial adapter connected to my machine?

Hello, im getting tired to be forced to remember many different options for various package managers on different distros. so i did a little script that allows me to do like "asd install foo" on any distro i got that script installed, and it will install the package using the systems package manager. so, before i hack this script to a better state, i was wondering does this kind of script/project already exist ? cheers .andre
