Guys, With a number of arch boxes now, I routinely rsync the package cache from box to box for updates, etc. Today what started out as a "1-liner" to show what scripts in /var/cache/pacman/pkg were installed, uninstalled (what I called orphaned) and then to create summary files and create a script to install the orphans -- well -- turned into somewhat of a longer script that I thought I would pass along. The script 'chkinstpkgs.sh' does just that. Check the installed packages and give you a summary of what is going on with your package cache. I'm sure I just reinvented the wheel, but it was fun nonetheless. The script is at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/scripts/chkinstpkgs.sh I left all my development commented out at the end of the file -- there were some neat parse parameter substitutions, etc.. that I ultimately didn't use that might be helpful for anyone wanting to mess with managing their package cache, or at least provide a "go-by" for anyone interested in learning a bit more bash. The -h | --help option displays a short help: 18:30 alchemy:~/scr/arch> sh chkinstpkgs.sh -h Usage: chkinstpkgs.sh [package-dir] [orphans-file] [installed-file] [install-orphans-file] chkinstpkgs.sh checks all packages in 'package-dir' to see whether the file is installed or whether the package is an orphan (exists in 'package-dir' but isn't installed). Results are printed to the screen and saved in the users home directory as shown below: Where the defaults are: package-dir=/var/cache/pacman/pkg/ orphans-file=~/pkgs-orphans.txt installed-file=~/pkgs-installed.txt install-orphans-file=~/pkgs-install-orphans.sh Options: -h | --help display usage help and exit -s | --summary display packages totals, installed, orphaned and exit The -s | --summary just gives a numeric summary of the installed/orphaned: 18:30 alchemy:~/scr/arch> sh chkinstpkgs.sh -s Determining installed/orphaned packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg... It took about a minute to complete on my laptop. Enjoy. Other package cache scripts available: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/scripts/fduparchpkg http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/scripts/fduppkg The above scripts remove duplicate packages from the package cache and move them to /home/backup/pkg-old and /home/backup/pkg-older. The workhorse is fduppkg and fduparchpkg is just a wrapper that calls fduppkg. I just create links to the files in /usr/local/bin: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Dec 7 18:22 fduparch -> /home/david/scr/pm/fduparchpkg lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Nov 5 02:21 fduppkg -> /home/david/scr/pm/fduppkg then just call fduparch and it will move all duplicates from /var/cache/pacman/pkg to /home/backup/pkg-old and then remove all duplicates (newly created) from /home/backup/pkg-old and move them to /home/backup/pkg-older. That way you always have current packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, a clean set of the next most recent packages in /home/backup/pkg-old and the package dump of /home/backup/pkg-older where you can keep as many as you want. One primary benefit of moving the packages to /home/backup is it frees up space on your / partition as well as cleaning up /var/cache/pacman. I have posted the dup scripts before, but these have a few updates that optimize things better to cut down on runtime. Even with several thousand packages, the scripts run in about a minute as well. Last note: for any Archers who would like to dig into bash scripting a little more. I like to think these scripts have a lot of cool stuff in them (at least I think so...) and provide a good reference for loops, arrays, array and loop index manipulation for optimizations, redirection, subshells, functions, parameter substitution and substring extraction that are fairly good tools to put in your *nx toolbox. Believe it or not, I actually take some time to comment the scripts with that purpose in mind. (and so I can remember what the hell I was thinking a year from now...) Hi all, I've been holding the mkinitcpio package due to http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15240 A quick look into testing shows that I won't be able to update the 2.6.32 kernel due to dependencies on klib invalidating my 'old' mkinitcpio package. Unfortunately I'm stuck here, since without this 'old' package for mkinitcpio (0.5.24-1) I'm unable to resume from hibernate in tuxonice. Any suggestions?

[arch-general] Installing Arch Linux w/ RAID

I have been struggling with successfully installing Arch Linux on my PC with just two S-ATA drives. I am using the LiveCD / Netinst "2009.08". The only partition I want for RAID is simply /home. I have two identical disks and am partition as follows: /dev/sda1 = 2048 (bootable) */boot* /dev/sda2 = 40960 */* /dev/sda3 = 102400 *RAID* /dev/sdb1 = 2048 *Swap* /dev/sdb2 = 40960 */var* /dev/sdb3 = 102400 *RAID* Then I create the RAID after I run "cfdisk" utility: mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 Once that is done, I run "/arch/setup command from the comand prompt and enter the system installer as normal. I have simply already created my disks, all I do from the installer now is assign a file system and mount point. It recognizes the RAID /dev/md0 partition I created using mdadm utility. Everything is fine but when I install Grub on /dev/sda and reboot the machine, I always fail to boot. I get some strange error that tells me to type "Control-D" for maintenance mode or something like that. If I do everything like I did above but don't create a RAID partition, Arch installs perfect! What am I doing wrong? The Arch Wiki is not helping me at all. I have spent a week trying to follow the Wiki with help from the forums and to no avail I have given up. I can't see this being that hard. I think I bork something up when I install Grub but I get no errors and it tells me I installed Grub successfully on /dev/sda. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=80776 Thanks for any help in getting me a working Arch Linux system with RAID.

Guys, This is really strange. Sound used to work on my laptop, now it is just -- gone. [arch-general] Low volume for kopete notifications

Hello All, I got a new computer and installed arch on it. I have restored my home directory from other machine, which has lived thr. kde3 -> kde4 transition and isn't exactly prestine. This is core2duo machine and the soundcard is 82801G HDA, as reported by lspci. I don't have pulseaudio installed. Jack is installed but not running. Phonon backend is gstreamer. Everything is working fine but there is a strange behaviour. Volume of kopete notification is very low. I am surprised that it even has a different volume than normal. Furthermore kopete has no way to set this volume, even though I can set the tone/music for it. Sound test in KDE settings runs fine in notifications and music category(how to set them for applications and how do they matter anyways?). Also moc(a console mp3 player) is working fine.( I had to resort to moc since juk doesn't output any sound at all. That is another issue but I don't mind moc) Creating a new user isn't an option since I have tons of settings/data customized and can't leave it all behind. Any help is appreciated. is it just me or did the lastsync format change? IIRC the lastsync file was 1 file in the root of the repo, with the date in it in string format. now the lastsync files are like so: <path>/{core,extra,testing,...}/os/{i686,x86_64}/lastsync each containing a unix timestamp. note: no lastsyncfile for any 'any' architecture directory, and also none for either architecture for the community-testing repo. maybe the easiest is to go back to 1 global file, as long as we can make sure somehow that rsync will sync the lastsync file as last thing. I maintain an (official) mirror and would like to monitor these files to prevent out-of-date issues. Dieter

[arch-general] Yikes! kernel26-2.6.32-1-x86_64 leaves Toshiba laptop unbootable

Guys, I had a fairly rude surprise when I pulled the testing updates tonight. The install of kernel26-2.6.32-1-x86_64 left my toshiba 205d laptop unbootable. The boot process would start as usual but then get to a point just after it had started X and lock. There was no way to ctrl+f1 to break out of X and the only solution was to reboot. I booted to the install cd, and chrooted everything in /mnt/arch and downgraded the kernel to kernel26-2.6.31.6-1 (along with madwifi) and now everything is back to normal. I have looked throught the logs, but I don't know where the useful information would be captured. [arch-general] Unable to Install Arch on Server

I have a Dell server (Power Edge 1855) blade that I am trying to install Arch Linux on. I have no problems installing / running Debian, CentOS, or Ubuntu on this hardware but when I try to boot from Arch CD (2009.08 Netinst or Core), I get an error: Waiting for boot device... Error: Boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt. You can try and fix the problem manually, log out when you're finished. ramfs$ I also built a new PC from home with parts purchased from Newegg.com. The machine runs perfect with almost any flavor of Linux / Windows but when I go to install Arch Linux as above, I get the same error. I have done md5 sum check on my ISO image and used the CD on other servers fine. I know the disk / image is not the problem. Anyone know how I can resolve this?
