Hello, I am the author of a new implementation of POSIX bc. ( https://github.com/gavinhoward/bc) It has all GNU extensions, so it can be used to build the Linux kernel. In fact, it can be a drop-in replacement for the GNU bc. While I believe that my bc is robust enough to be used as the default bc on Arch, I am under no illusion that that will happen right away, if at all. Instead, I have made a PKGBUILD (attached) for my bc as an alternative. It installs alongside the GNU bc without problem, since it is renamed as "bc-gh". This also includes a dc under "dc-gh". Would there be interest in adding my bc as an Arch package? Gavin Howard

[aur-general] Can someone make sure pkg adwaita-creamy is users not knowing what they're doing, rather than AUR bugs?

Hoping someone can look at the non-public history of the AUR package with "pkgbase=pkgbase" and "pkgname=adwaita-creamy". The repo started as an embedded programming language, and is now a GTK Adwaita theme. I am expecting the non-public history will just show a weird sequence of events combined with several users not understanding pkgbase. I could be wrong, and this could show bug(s) with the AUR, so I wanted to mention it. A few days ago, an IRC user made the same mistake and was being denied pushing to pkgbase.git since it existed. I go them squared away, and that led me to this lovely AUR repo. What I'm betting happened follows. I think on Feb 25, "Stoyan Minaev" pushed "pkgname=loli" without a pkgbase. He made more pushes, inserting and changing pkgbase a total of 6 times until deciding "pkgbase=pkgbase" was correct way. I think he then disowned the package. Then, on Mar 2, maybe "Murat Çileli" unknowingly adopted the package by pushing into it his new PKGBUILD. Maybe he checked it out, was confused, changed it to his different package and pushed it. This had too many WTF's, so wanted someone to look at the non-public history. I don't know if it's intended to be able to change an existing package's git repo name. I don't know if it's intended to be able to adopt a package by just pushing into it if it's an orphan. (Alternatively, maybe Murat adopted through the website.) I don't know if Stoyan disowned anything.

I'm also receiving comments from lots of different spam accounts in unity-editor. I'm not a TU and the web gui doesn't seem to have an option to deal with it. What's the protocol for these cases? Thanks, Oscar.

Howdy, I have installed caddy following it's page on the wiki. when I start it though, with systemctl start caddy, it fails to start. Hello, lately i have noticed an increased percentage of spam comments in the AUR. Especially for the spotify package there were 4 accounts I had to block within a few weeks. Have you been able to make similar observations with your packages or is this an exception? Should and how can we better protect ourselves from spam comments? ~Nico

[aur-general] Delete Git tree for new package with broken state

Hi, I've been trying to upload packages from archlinux-me176c [1] to the AUR. My scripts create a subtree split of one package, then do quite a bit of other magic and upload it to the AUR. I've been having a few problems with "linux-me176c" because I used to have large patch files in the repository (> 250 KiB). So I modified the scripts to cut off the history after I switched to fetching from a Git repository instead. This works fine, but while testing I seem to have uploaded a broken subtree or some temporary commit, so the new generated subtrees no longer match what is uploaded on the AUR - making it impossible for me to update the package (without force-push). Deleting the package on the AUR was accepted automatically because of: Deletion of a fresh package requested by its current maintainer. but I should have read on the wiki first that this does not delete the Git tree. :) Is there any chance to remove the Git repository of this new package, or should I somehow try to recover that broken state? Hi all, Thanks to Hetzner sponsoring our new server [0] we now have a new box with 48 threads, 128 GiB RAM, and 2 NVMes in RAID0 with a total of 1.75 TiB of storage. Should be plenty fast for the time being. The new server is now available at dragon.archlinux.org for all of your package building pleasures. All TUs and devs have had all of their keys added. pkgbuild.com will soon be pointed to this new server so keep that in mind in case your SSH tells you the hostname changed. IMPORTANT: No data has been migrated from soyuz. It is your responsibility to transfer any data you might want on dragon. soyuz will stay available for at least a month from now (probably more, don't worry, there will be another mail for its termination), so you have plenty of time to migrate any data. dragon will not host public_html in your home dirs. That will move somewhere else. dragon is very strictly a build box and no other services should run on there. soyuz hasn't been changed in any way and if you really want to keep using that, you can do so until it gets terminated. Hiya! Jerome convinced me to finally apply for TU, and Sven-Hendrik agreed to co-sponsor my application (both Cc'd). I'm a generalist that works on free software full time. I maintain the following AUR packages: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?SeB=m&K=sircmpwn I also maintain a third-party Arch repo and oversee some automation for helping to build and publish new packages: https://git.sr.ht/~sircmpwn/sr.ht-pkgbuilds I'm also the upstream maintainer for several packages in community, including wlroots, sway, and scdoc; and I maintain numerous packages for Alpine Linux as well. I maintain many other free software projects, most notably sourcehut, and I also contribute to many projects maintained by others as well. I think Jerome has been hoping for some relief from the packages I maintain the upstream for, so I may start by relieving that burden. I'd also like to move the samuari package into community, and likely some of the Python packages from my third-party repository as well. [aur-general] Handling coincidental name collisions

Hi everyone, This is in regard to this thread on the forum: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=244051 The packaged contained this project: https://github.com/Aniket-Pradhan/lsd To summarize the thread, an AUR package that had existed for a while was deleted when an unrelated package of the same name was moved to [community]. The reason given was that the AUR package was "not useful enough", either because it only had 2 votes or because the acting TU saw no personal use for it. For trivial packages, it would be good to at least clarify the reason for deletion in a little more detail. There are plenty of AUR packages that persist for years with 0 votes so a maintainer with 2 votes may be understandably confused by the terse statement "not useful enough". A little clarification can easily disperse that confusion and better guide the user through future contributions. However, "trivial" here usually means that someone uploaded a bash script to do something like open arandr and click on it with xdotool to save half a second, or baked some convoluted ls-cat-cat-grep-cat-sed-cat pipe into a 3-line script. The project involved here is not in the same category. It may not be practically "useful" for many users, but it does do something that is not trivial to replicated in a few lines of shell code. It's "usefulness" is subjective. In this case, the TU should have proposed renaming the package, given the maintainer some time to pick a new name and re-upload the package, and then merged the old one. Hello Everyone! I am Aniket Pradhan, username: major, who wrote "lsd" and initiated the discussion. I would like to thank everyone for their input on this matter. I agree with the others, that this IS a silly little script. I wrote it when I was learning shell programming. I published it to the AUR because it was going to be my first package here, and I wanted to keep it simple. The reason I started the discussion was that I was not given enough time to decide whether to delete the package or to rename it (or if it was my decision or some other TUs). The reason also stated "not useful enough" which was very ambiguous to me. But, I guess that is resolved now since "There is no such procedure to follow when deleting packages", quoted from Eli. I never wanted this to become such big an issue. I just wanted to discuss on the ethicality of the deletion. To be honest, I never wanted to contest for that name "lsd", because I know that my script is very "trivial". Hi, is there a canonical way to distinguish the active Java version in the launch script of a Java application? (a) I could do a switch on the `archlinux-java get` output. However, this strategy might fail for unconsidered JVMs from AUR. (b) I could parse the `java -version` output. However, the output is somewhat complex to parse and its syntax differs between Java versions and implementations. (c) Some packages rely on aur/archlinux-java-run. The Arch Linux Wiki page does not mention any strategy or preferred way. [0] Rationale: jd-gui needs additional JVM arguments to make it run on Java ⩾9. Hey folks, I'm on a pretty awful laptop + internet right now and unable to attend to TU duties until end of the month. I'll note that I'm unable to even load https://aur.archlinux.org -- it seems to hang at the TLSv1.3 handshake on my 4G (tethered or not). This has been the case since forever but it's now an issue. I initially thought it was just down. Then thought it was on my side but the rest of the archlinux domains work fine. Any idea what could cause this? J. Leclanche

Hello everyone, First of all, following a discussion on Twitter, I wanted to know whether this company is authorized to sell goodies (hoodies) with the Arch Linux trademark on it? I know it is being listed on the archlinux.org frontpage, but I wonder what's percentage is given to the project as compensation [1]. With FOSDEM behind the corner, there have been quite a few discussions on social media and IRC recently regarding stands/community involvement etc. A few questions have been raised wrt. trademark/acting on behalf of the project, etc. and I wasn't able to find an answer on the Wiki. Who can speak on behalf of the community, etc? Even if Arch Linux is a meritocratic organization, do we have such a person inside our community? Maybe it's the right time to fill the gap in the wiki? To understand better the situation, let's imagine a few use cases. 1. Someone who wants to craft Arch Linux merchandising for him/herself and others given free of charge. e.g. I attend FOSDEM and I want to show others I'm an Arch Linux user. If another Arch Linux user passes by and ask me if I have goodies, give them free of charge. 2. Someone wants to craft Arch Linux merchandising for others. No gain other than the one to cover the fees of the company we are ordering from e.g. Zazzle. e.g. An Arch Linux stand is organized at FOSDEM and I want to organize it. 3. A magazine is asking the stand organizer to make an interview on behalf of the community with a question like why do you have dropped i686 compatibility? What is the project direction for the next few years, etc. 4. Someone wants to give money to the project. Can he receive a document for taxing purpose? What is the legal process for these aforementioned use cases? According to the trademark rules, we have to ask the the Arch Linux Project Lead for "merchandising purposes".[2] Does asking money to the end user to cover charge can be considered as a commercial activity even if we are not making profits? Are we allowed to answer questions that could involve the whole community? When someone is donating money to the project, who is receiving it? How can we have transparency about the IN/OUT of the treasury (server cost? etc.). What is the legal structure behind Arch Linux? Are we a foundation like The Document Foundation? When a stand is organized for a particular event, does the Arch Linux organization participate in the funding? I haven't been able to find such an information on the Wiki. Because asking for the end user to pay for his/her on goodies is not something that can have much success, especially when the Fedora/Mageia/RedHat/Debian community is giving everything for free in such an event. For the record, even if I have been participating to FOSDEM since 2012 and have adopted Arch Linux as my daily OS since that date, I haven't been able to see an Arch Linux stand yet. The only things I heard of: * a small lightning talk about pacman and the way packages are being built * some goodies informally given by the ex. Trusted User Andrea Scarpino. Do we maintain a list of events whose topic was Arch Linux (other than having to dig into the arch-event mailing list)? Hi, I currently try to create a system-wide spotifyd service that can play music from a dedicated user/group. I used the spotifyd package from AUR as a base: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spotifyd/ I added a user directory for the user and added it to the audio group: u spotifyd - "Spotify daemon user" /var/lib/spotifyd m spotifyd audio The directory is created like this: d /var/lib/spotifyd 0750 spotifyd spotifyd - I've added to the system service to start with a config file in /etc/sptoifyd.conf and start with: User=spotifyd Group=spotifyd Now the service is running fine in the background, I can select it in spotify. But no sound will play. I am also running a gnome desktop environment with pulseaudio on the machine. And I dont know how to get audio working within this service. The software supports alsa backend and pulseaudio backend, but none of them seem to give me a sound. Hi, There is a bit of debate at the borgmatic package ( https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/borgmatic) about what check() should do. The upstream borgmatic project uses tox to execute its tests. tox creates an isolated python virtualenv with the correct dependency versions and executes tests in there. The original maintainer thinks check() should not use tox so that tests can be run against the system installed dependencies. But this is not so easy to do, an attempt was made by installing the python package into an isolated directory just for tests, but even then it seems to conflict with an existing borgmatic installation. Another way of seeing things is that check() should just run tests the way it is intended by upstream, it is for testing the build artifacts are correct, not for testing it will run correctly on the system where it is built. By this logic check() should just run tox, and correct dependency versions can be enforced by using version ranges in "depends". Any advice on this ? Cheers, Julien

Merry Christmas all, I have been looking for a general PKGBUILD forum to get some help with some build problems. I have been trying to build the mingw packages using makechrootpkg -c I have built 436 out of 497 packages. There are a few corrections I have to submit. BUT There are a few issues that are quite simply driving me nuts. These PKGBUILD'S are supposed to have built at some point :} I have come across an interesting error with mingw-w64-python-setuptools Quite simply the package() function needs access to /tmp/ It uses wine to install the package. But the fakeroot wont allow wine access to /tmp/ ie - wine: chdir to /tmp/.wine-0/server-841-4e2c3c : Permission denied I have tried a few tricks - even invoking wineserver as a daemon at prepare() this either freezes the build process - or cant access /build/.wine Any clues or hints would be appreciated. Following up from IRC. Hello! I run a public build service which has Arch Linux support and uses yay to install AUR packages when requested. I recently had some users running up against the AUR rate limit. The current rate limit window (1 day) seems a bit strict. Would it be possible to apply the rate limit hourly? Today it's 4000 requests per day, but ~166 requests per hour would be a similar load on the server but a bit more forgiving, users would only have to wait an hour before attempting their builds again. The long term solution is probably to mirror the AUR or adjust the approach to try and minimize API requests (perhaps by cloning the repos and sorting out dependencies by sourcing the PKGBUILDs.... would be a bit involved). [aur-general] Building mingw packages

Good morning All, I have been cleaning up my build system and building all my packages. In doing so I have come across a problem that affects all mingw packages that nuse gcc. mingw-w64-gcc is built with --disable-dw2-exceptions however it would seem that windows is a dwarf system, so mingw-w64-gcc should have been built with --disable-sjlj-exceptions. This most affects the building of mingw-w64-rust which wont build on a sjlj mingw system. And there are a large number of packages that depend on mingw-w64-rust. My question's are - 1. Should mingw-w64-gcc, mingw-w64-gcc-bootstrap and mingw-w64-fs be changed to reflect this so that all mingw64 packages are built the same way? 2. mingw-w64-rust is being installed to /opt/rust, should it be instead installed to /usr/x86_64-w64-mingw32 and /usr/i686-w64-mingw32, as are all the other mingw packages? [aur-general] Help with python-magic-wormhole PKGBUILD

Howdy, I have had a few people post that they are having trouble with this since it became a split package. Currently, I am unable to reproduce the problems. I have installed it both with yay and with makepkg. I do see one who tried to install it as a group, and since both provide the same package, that would conflict, but they should be able to install either python2-magic-wormhole or python-magic-wormhole. I Can't find anything wrong with the PKGBUILD. [aur-general] A Positive Tale about an out-of-date Package

Hi everyone, I hope you don't mind, but after all these "discussions" lately I thought I'd step out of the undergrowth, brush myself off and just tell a little tale of how dealing with out-of-date packages can go in this community. So grab a cup of your favorite beverage and have a relaxed read. A little while back I came across the software synergy. Arch Linux being Arch Linux, of course, has a package for it! Hurray I thought, no need to package it myself. So I went and installed it. Sadly I realized it is quite out of date. At this point I can't remember if it was me who flagged it or if it was already flagged. Regardless, I thought "Maybe the maintainer is already on it, let's give them some time." After, I believe, about two weeks I thought, well let's take a look at the maintainers account aaand wow! According to the package search they are listed as maintainer on 591 packages! No wonder if a package or two fall through the cracks. So I looked in the PKGBUILD and found the email address of the maintainer. I quickly emailed them along the lines of "Hey, I noticed the synergy package has been out of date for a while. I also see you have tons of packages to maintain. Want some help with synergy?". Quite quickly I got a reply (paraphrasing) "Oh sorry about that, I had forgotten about that package. Some help would be amazing, here's a link to a github repository where I keep my packages. Feel free to open a pull request.". To github! Synergy was stubborn as they have lot's of bundled dependencies that all want to be unraveled. It was a journey in which I deepened my knowledge about CMake, learned to curse project maintainers that don't think about us packaging-people and eventually even learned a few more details about packaging for Arch Linux. After some time the pull request was ready. The package maintainer had to add a little spit and polish, after which it was merged and released into the wild. No further flagging or requesting necessary. So to all newbies out there that may have gotten scared by what was going on in the mailing lists lately: Don't be afraid! As far as I have perceived it so far, this is a welcoming and supportive community with great people working on a great (if not the best) Linux distribution. On TU applications, TU participation and package quality: ========= Many Trusted Users have brought up their concerns regarding the lack of proper vetting of packages put forward by new TU's, the small participation of TUs in their duties* and the declining quality of packages in the community/ repository. As a consequence, we've decided to bring forward proposals to tackle the following issues: ## Issues * Existing Trusted Users are not followed closely in their actions, and the quality of some packages for instance is more than questionable. * New applications are not carefully reviewed, and a several TUs seem to just vote “Yes” by default. * There is a general feeling of decreasing/not high enough quality in the packages provided in the community/ repository. * The implication of some TUs in the distribution is very limited outside of packaging. ### current proposals (simplified) The discussion #archlinux-tu channel has yielded three general possibilities: 1. Add a council of TU's to introduce oversight on the whole voting process 2. Increase the minimum number of sponsors per application 3. Create a working group of TU's to review recent applications and warn TU's that do *not* appear to be performing their duties appropriately Consider that these need not be the only possibilities and any further proposals should be also brought up. ## Proposals ### TU council Creating a council of TUs who, by means of experience and involvement, make sure the approval of new TU's is properly reviewed. As such, this council will be in charge of voting in and/or sponsoring a new TU applicant. This raises questions about the horizontal power structure of the TU community. The consequences of bringing a hierarchy like this need to be discussed, as more than one TU is concerned of the implications of this model. The means for election for such a council are yet to be discussed, as the feasibility of this measure is to be discussed first. ### Minimum number of sponsors An alternative to a TU council is to increase the minimum number of sponsors for a TU application. This has been the case in other communities that experienced rapid growth (e.g., CNCF) and may help increase oversight and preparation of newer applicants. Variants of this model can be considered too. For example, a buddy system in which new applicants need both an experienced TU and a new TU as sponsors may also help preparing new TU's with the process of preparing applicants. However, one question raised during the discussion is whether this model is enough to warrant the goals outlined above. Namely, this measure doesn't seem to tackle the lack of participation of the broader TU community when reviewing new TU applications. ### Oversight committee Finally, a third proposal (and the one I'm championing) is to generate an elected organism within the TU community to overlook the performance of Trusted Users on the duties they agreed to fulfill. This oversight committee would track the activities of individual TUs and ensure that they are in fact participating in reviews, submitting proper high-quality PKGBUILDS, and moving packages to and from the AUR when the package's popularity changes. The methods by which this committee would enforce better TU participation are still to be discussed, but issuing warnings and probably bring cases to the broader TU community regarding an underperforming TU may be sufficient and nondisruptive. ## Conclusions The proposals above serve as a first step to discuss and iteratve over ideas on how to improve TU participation, applications and package quality. With this in mind, discussion of the applicability of these (or any other proposal) alone or on tandem should follow suit. Thanks! -Santiago P.S.: sorry for the legalose tone. Hello everyone, My name is Maxim Baz, and with Morten Linderud (Foxboron) as my sponsor (who I was referred to by Alad Wenter) I'm applying to become a Trusted User. According to the git history of my dotfiles, I've been using Linux for around 3 years and Arch Linux for around 2 years. I'm quite active open-source contributor, especially on Github as you can see on my profile page [1]. Some of my currently favorite projects where I both contribute code and participate in discussions are: browserpass, wire-desktop, kitty, kakoune, spaceship-prompt, and undoubtedly aurutils. I also once submitted a small patch [2] to pacman-contrib that got merged. During the day I work at Microsoft, where I am also using Arch Linux and building software that runs on Linux in production. In my mind, packaging is one of the best ways to do good for Arch Linux community. Luckily there are tools that make this easy: I use Alad's aurutils and always build in chroot, fixing broken PKGBUILDs on the fly and sharing my fixes with package maintainers on AUR; to manage my own AUR packages [3] (except for the very few) I now use aurpublish tool by Eli Schwartz. Maintaining 'chromium-vaapi' in particular showed me how important it is to keep a valid up-to-date PKGBUILD for a tool that many people rely on every day, as well as how useful it is to provide precompiled binaries for apps that require lots of time and/or resources to compile — this is how my package 'chromium-vaapi-bin' was born. One aspect of packaging that always interested me is security and trust. Firstly, I have recently stumbled upon the idea of "reproducible builds" and I love it, Eli Schwartz and Morten Linderud briefly introduced me to the current efforts and I'm planning to get more involved in this area. In particular, I'm interested in the user-facing side of things, figuring out how to integrate this with pacman and how to let regular users benefit from reproducible builds the most. Also, as a TU I want to help finishing TODO "BUILDINFO rebuild" [4] if it's not completed earlier. Secondly, to maintain people's trust in Trusted Users we should never use http to fetch sources unless a verification method (such as a gpg signature) is also available, that's why I also want to help burning down a corresponding TODO "Use gpg signatures and https sources" [5]. Another thing I would do as TU is I would like to maintain and co-maintain packages for some Language Servers (if the current maintainers don't object). Language Server Protocol is a very cool concept (designed by Microsoft :P), it defines a protocol used between programming languages and editors to add features like autocomplete, go to definitions, code formatting and much more. Language servers themselves are being developed by community and are already supported by many editors like vim, neovim and kakoune. I am planning to start with the following packages: - bash-language-server: already in [community], I'd like to co-maintain it - python-language-server and python-jsonrpc-server: already in [community], I'd like to co-maintain them - go-langserver: the most feature-rich language server at the moment, to bring it to [community] I started the discussion with the upstream maintainers about tagging releases - kak-lsp: de-facto official plugin that adds LSP support for kakoune editor. I would also like to move some AUR packages to [community], in particular these ones have good amount of votes and in my mind deserve to be promoted to [community]: - wire-desktop (76): End-to-end encrypted messaging app that works on Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and iPhone. It is free, open-source and available on Github. Although I'm co-maintaining this package on AUR, I was mostly focused on contributing to the project itself: I added proper emoji support (following the latest Unicode standard), emoji autocomplete and improved native notifications on Linux (show user pictures, set urgency hint). - browserpass (31): Browser extension for pass (unix password manager), works in Chromium and Firefox. I became the primary project maintainer about a year ago, and together with another maintainer recently started rewriting it to make the architecture accommodate users' needs. I'm planning to bring this to [community] after the new version is ready (we are aiming to release in December). Also, someone in comments on AUR gave me a cool idea to use split-packages for Chromium and Firefox browsers, I'm going to do this as well (current PKGBUILD installs browserpass for both browsers, even if these browsers are not installed). - ttf-emojione (33): Colorful emoji font from EmojiOne. I created a Docker image that is able to compile the font out of image assets, and configured a Travis job for EmojiOne team so that the font is automatically being compiled on every commit and attached to every Github release. - grub-btrfs (15): Detects and includes btrfs snapshots in GRUB menu, allowing to easily boot in any existing snapshot. I personally use grub-btrfs in combination with snap-pac and snap-pac-grub for seamless integration with snapper and pacman. - python-black (10): Python code formatter that quickly gains popularity, I see it being adopted more and more in the community of Python developers, so I want it to be available in [community] repo. - gocryptfs (18): Encrypted overlay filesystem, an alternative for encfs. For all of the above, I'm being active on their Github pages and monitoring new releases using urlwatch. Finally I would like to co-maintain some of the packages that are already in [community] if the current maintainers don't object, I use them myself and participate in their development: - kakoune - kitty - prettier - py3status - urlwatch Sometimes I flag these packages as outdated, but I could just as well bump the versions myself. I am being sponsored by dvzrv. I've been working in the AUR since 2014 as 'Ainola'. I've had a few of my packages adopted into [community], such as gnome-mpv, csound, and qutecsound (the latter two being adopted by dvzrv). I am also an active contributor to the LibreOffice infrastructure team. I would like to get valuable tools promoted into [community], such as residualvm or the 'pass' plasmoid (after prodding upstream to have a formal release). Other packages that I do not maintain in the AUR would be ripe for picking as well, such as sc-controller or ttf-lato. I would also work with dvzrv on maintaining pro-audio packages, many of which were abandoned when SpepS left.

Hi! I'm maintainer of Repology.org, a service which monitors, aggregates and compares package vesion accross 200+ package repositories with a purpose of simplifying package maintainers work by discovering new versions faster, improving collaboration between maintainers and giving software authhors a complete overview of how well their projects are packaged. Repology does obviously support AUR, however there were some problems with retrieving information on AUR packages and I think this could be improved. The way Repology currently fetches AUR package data is as follows: - fetch https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.gz - split packages into 100 item packs - fetch JSON data for packages in each pack from https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc/?v=5&type=info&arg[]=<packages> While fetching data from API, Repology does a 1 second pause between requests to not create excess load on the server, but there are still frequent 429 errors. I've tried 2 second delays, but the 429s are still there, and fetch time increases dramatically as we have to do more than 500 requests. Probably API is loaded by other clients as well. I suggest to implement a regularly updated JSON dump of information on all packages and make it available for the site, like packages.gz is. The content should be similar to what https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc/?v=5&type=info would return for all packages at once. This will eliminate the need to access the API and generate load on it, simplify and speed up fetching dramatically for both Repology and possible other clients. Additionally, I'd like to suggest to add information on distfiles to the dump (and probably an API as well for consistency). [aur-general] chroot clean building and "http 429"

G'Day all, I have been rebuilding all my packages properly in a clean chroot. I wwas writing a smaill script to put all the packages in order and I accidentaly got "http 429". Any Idea how long that lasts? - I figured out what caused it and fixed it. ( damned thing wasnt querying the PKGBUILDS but going online ). But my main question is how do you get around a circular dependancy. eg. mingw-w64-harfbuzz depends on - mingw-w64-freetype2 mingw-w64-freetype2 depends on -mingw-w64-harfbuzz You cant build one unless the other is already built. Hi@all, I searched whether elster (a program for German tax declaration) was present in the aur (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?K=elster) and found out it wasn't. When I finished my own PCKBUILD and tried to upload it, I noticed that there already was a git repo with that name (ssh://aur@aur.archlinux.org/elster.git). How can that be? While the original script is a meta package only, mine will download and install the latest version of the package via wine. Should I ask for deletion or what could I do? Original package maintainer is in CC. Cheers!

Yes, my job and profession are not related to the computing world, but since childhood I'm an enthusiast of the computing and software world. I've beeing using Linux since many years ago, and it's difficult to tell when I started, but it has been a long time. By searching in the middle of some old things here I could find some old Ubuntu CD-ROMs of the 7.04 (2007) version from the time they still shipped free disks worldwide, so I can for sure say that I have 11 years of Linux usage at minimum. But my initial Linux usage starts even before this, with some old RedHat distribution that didn't run very well on my poor graphics card, at a time that I cannot tell precisely. For many years I did the famous distro-hopping and have used many major distributions: openSUSE, Fedora, Mandrake/Mandriva (when they still existed), PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu and variants, Mint and probably others. I have started to use Arch in 2015. At that time I was at Linux Mint and feel the need for something better and different. I found myself in need of more recent software, being disappointed with the Mint/Ubuntu outdated ones. I was also very tired to reinstall the system every one (or two) year(s). When Mint went for shipping LTS-only releases, I decided that a rolling release distribution should be my new place. By already having many years of Linux usage and experience in the background, Arch was everything that I was looking for. Added the fact of being able to fully customize my system by building packages that could be easily integrated in the system with pacman. After felling confident with Arch itself, I've started to contribute packages to the AUR. I can perfectly remember my first one: ffmpeg-full-git. It was, and still is, a pleasure to maintain it, firstly because I was in need for it, and, secondly, because I was contributing back to the community something that was useful for me. Things evolved quickly, I started to maintain more and more packages that I was also in need for, while adopting other orphaned ones, and currently I'm the maintainer of 170+ packages[2]. Some of the packages that I maintained were already brought into the official repositories: - ffnvcodec-headers - intel-gmmlib (formerly named gmmlib on the AUR, adopted by my sponsor Bruno) - intel-media-driver (adopted by my sponsor Bruno Pagani) - libraqm - nccl - pybind11* (TU Santiago announced me that he will bring it into [community]) Among the years, I've studied C, x86 assembly, Python and shellscript. I'm trying to add C++ to the list, already started it, but still need to find more time to dedicate to it. I've made some contributions to the open source world. I have a project of my own called screencast[4], which is a command line interface to record a X11 desktop using FFmpeg, having support for offline recording, live streaming and the capability of adding some effects. It's written in pure POSIX/portable shellscript. Besides this, I've made a few commits here and there into the following open source projects: caffe2[5] (now on pytorch github repository), intel gstreamer media SDK[6][7] and intel media sdk[8]. So I also try to contribute back to some upstream projects when my not-so-wide programming skills allow me. I also report bugs to the upstream open source projects for packages which I maintain on the AUR if I encounter some that affects the building process or my direct usage. I would like to become a Trusted User to be able to contribute to the Arch community as much as I can. I would like to bring the following packages into [community]: - advancecomp - kvazaar - intel-media-sdk - libmysofa - openh264 - shine - vmaf I'm also willing to co-maintain my already mentioned old AUR packages. Could I please have comments on the below (and attached) PKGBUILD for nixnote2-release-bin. To pre-empt some comments: 1) This will download the latest binary from GitHub. I'm open to a different package name to denote that it's not a '-git' or build-from-latest-source-code, but rather a build-from-latest-binary-release. You may say that building from latest binary release against the packaging guidelines, but I can't see where. A few words about me: I am currently a Particle Physics PhD at Univerisity of Edinburgh and I have used Linux since my early teenage years. After I finished high-school, Linux has been my main operating system. I embraced Open Source software for a long time ago and contribute to such several projects [2][3][4]. I have been with Arch Linux since 4+ years ago, although only more active since 2+ years. My main work is concentrated on Experimental Particle Physics & the LHCb Detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. As part of that I have been involved in the development, upgrade & maintenance of the High-Level Trigger & RICH systems and LHCb's data flow [3]. I also have experience with a lot of data processing & analysis - data distillation & enrichment, machine learning, statistical analysis, etc - and associated tools. Separately, I maintain several machines - a personal web server, company server with several VMs, local workhorse server, personal workstation & laptop (sprinkle around some RaspberryPis and network devices here and there). This put me in a unique position to work with many and different kinds of systems and software - ranging from ASICs & FPGAs, through localized control systems & end-user devices to large clusters & super computers. Daily, I use popular tools such as VMs, docker, git, GCC, CUDA, tensorflow, Cern's ROOT, but I also run a lot of custom and even-self made software [4][6]. All of this has been a breeze on Arch Linux. Thus, a couple of years ago, I decide to get more involved and contribute. I took on the task to maintain CERN's ROOT package [7] and since then I've involved myself heavily into that, I'm a contributor to the project and I use it daily in my work. I have been providing this package for many colleagues in the field, including all of its stack & complementary tools (Pythia, XRootD & other Python tools). I have enabled a lot of new features and worked with upstream towards new functionality, bug fixes, etc. On top of that I have shipped several other related projects - machine learning packages, SciKit-HEP packages like uproot, Docker images, GitLab CIs and so on. I have also been able to develop and publish a machine learning project me and colleague came up with [4]. This is soon going to be a package in SciKit-HEP and I will aim to make it package here too. Arch Linux was a great platform for all of this. I was able to install & configure up-to-date software easily and what I did not find, I provided for me & others on the AUR without too much hassle. Overall, I have to say Arch Linux (and its community) have played a key role in me being able to do all of these things. I have found the OS itself to be stable and flexible and the users & maintainers approachable and direct, which I appreciate a lot. I have met a lot of people through the Arch Linux community - forums, AUR and just saying 'I use Arch, too!', haha. The reason for applying to become a TU is to get even more involved and give back to the community. If you accept me, I would like to continue maintaining and improving my current packages as well as bring new packages. As an AUR maintainer I basically consider it an on-going duty already. I already did. I showed an example of how I contributed, and I already have two packages I was able to update and maintain. There would have been many more if I wasn't suspended for no good reason. You blindly assuming I didn't contact the maintainer, then denying my request TWICE, not giving a reason TWICE, instead of actually discussing it with me why you denied my maintainership is not actually a reason to deny my request. Since you didn't explicitly claim why you denied it, having two times to do so, taunting me to request it again, technically is no reason to deny someones request. Not only was no reason given to denying my request to maintain sdl2-hg, you gave no reason for suspending my account. FYI, "sdl2-hg" and "lib32-sdl2-hg" were both maintained by the same guy, so if you just handed over maintainership to me for "lib32-sdl2-hg" in a blink of an eye, there's no reason to do the same for "sdl2-hg", considering it was the same maintainer, and all the reasons I mentioned before, especcially the comment from "Teteros". This all in all, is completely unprofessional, and for some of you to judge me and my actions...maybe you all should look at yourselfs before even considering judging me. [aur-general] Unfortunate Perceived Attitudes.

Good morning, Afternon, Evening (as appropriate :/) all, I have been a Linux user for about 25 years. I was introduced to it when it had to be downloaded from a Bulletin Board via (cough) a 1200 baud modem. (For those who don't know, Its like writing the code into the computer while listening to it being dictated over the phone) I have over the years attempted to participate in the Linux Community - but have always been put off by various attitudes of some Guru's I was kicked/banned from the #linux IRC channel for "Lurking" when simply I was trying to catch up with the current conversation. I was always of the opinion that it was rude to interrupt. I never again tried to ask for help, or even consider contributing until now. I am acutely aware that programming is a High Math/Sciences calling and that those who are high Math/Sciences tend to have a few flaws in their communication skills. I my self have been in trouble for this on many occasions. I have only recently joined this list as I am considering contributing. I asked one question and it seemed to turn into a divisive argument to some people. I have since observed that this does not seem to be an isolated occurrence. I would like to point out that since these threads are in the public domain, that all words used need to be thought and read through twice. Every thing written here will be read by newbies and other possible future Guru's. What they read may just push them away instead of attracting them to the Linux cause. If I have written anything that Offends I would like to apologize in advance. It is not my intention to start some great debate - but simply to try and make people think twice before replying to any thread, especially when upset. Thanks Macca

I recently tried to be the maintainer for an package that hasn't been updated in quite some time. I've been using my own PKGBUILD for the particular package with great success, and currently am maintaining the "lib32-sdl2-hg" 32 bit version of this package. Upon request of this package, It was denied for no reason given, except a disrespectful message from coderob and I quote. "come back with a better request, my dude" So I did, I requested to maintain the package again, and was denied, then my account got suspended. Whats the deal here? I wasn't warned about anything I may have done wrong, and I'm currently maintaining two packages, and co-maintaining another one, which I no longer can access. Hi, I have a pakage in AUR that uses an automatic package versioning. I use a pkgver() and pkgrel(). However I just noticed that the package version in AUR is old. Dear all, yesterday I received about 10 email notifications that my package pass-git-helper-git was adopted by some random user, differing in each email. Yet, the web interface shows myself as the maintainer and I never opened the package for adoption. Does anyone know what is going on here? This was my thought - then I came across Mythtv - epoch=1 pkgrel=5 pkgver=29.1 The docs say that pkgrel should be for changes in the packaging files. Because of the Maintainers increasing pkgrel I was considering increasing the pkgrel by 0.01 each new build. This would allow for 99 subsequent builds on each pkgrel. The docs say that it can be of type ver.subver. would this work? Good morning All, I understand that there are 3 version control tags in the PKGBUILD file. pkgver - The Actual Package version pkgrel - The Arch modification/release count - for changes to the patches, install file's. epoch - Special version control number. If I need to rebuild a package due to dependancy rebuilds/changes how do I mark the new package as newer? Do I increase the epoch? Or is there another way? Thanks Macca

Hi all, Thanks for the comments and explanations. Firstly, I wanna say that I am not asking for special treatment or anything. Just wanted to discuss in detail what is going on. But to address the state of this particular package - it was added 2 weeks ago in a rush to push a new version upstream, because I maintain my packages well. This package and another from same time around need a complete rewrite, which I'm aware of. And this particular style of package was copied from another [community] package a long time ago, things have changed as it was pointed out to me here in the AUR. I had intentions to fix it as soon as I had time. Picking out one package out of the whole stack, which I have not had time to properly deal with, proves nothing, but that you aim to shame, rather than to understand where I'm coming from, why I am worried and that I'm actually looking to be heard and help. I took on the task to maintain CERN's ROOT a couple of years ago and since then I've involved myself heavily, I'm a contributor to the project and I use it daily in my work. Colleagues at CERN that use Arch Linux have been depending on me for this. I have enabled a lot of new features and worked with upstream to make even more functionality, bug fixes, etc. Currently, I am working on two new features with upstream, namely to allow for full build without internal dependencies, only external, and secondly for python2 and python3 simultaneous support. This is semi possible at the moment, but depends on me having the time to debug fully 3 packages - Pythia, XRootD & ROOT itself. On top of that I have shipped several other projects related to this for people that work on Arch Linux to be able to enjoy - Docker images, GitLab CIs, SciKit-HEP packages like uproot and so on. All of this is not a brag, it's not to say I am a better packager, and I am not asking for special attention. But what I want to make something clear - not all things can be said in a PKGBUILD. Packaging intentions matter and simply taking over packages without looking for/listening to the maintainer's comments may be detrimental. For example, the new features I worked to bring to the ROOT ecosystem and ones which I plan to work on in the future are obviously not part of my PKGBUILD. There's precedence for maintainers of specialized software in the AUR to be sponsored to become a Trusted User (though it seems there's a preexisting relationship?). I am not sure how much this applies to me in this case, but if it does I can say the following. I am willing to apply for a Trusted User to maintain ROOT's stack for Arch. I use the ROOT software on a daily basis. I take great care of the package (the whole stack actually) as my work depends on it. I have a test bench and people in my professional area use it and depend on me to bring improvements and new possibilities. I have involved myself and consider it an on-going duty. I have the skills and know-how to maintain the ROOT stack and I can say with certainty that AUR's ROOT package is only second to Fedora's package across other distros. But I also understand it is not perfect and am interested in making it better as I've shown previously here and to its users. If that is not an option, however, then I would like to say to Felix thanks for taking over and to take `root-extra` as the template for his package and drop all other variants. This was always the plan after a few things finally got merged upstream. I can go into detail privately. [aur-general] PKGBUILD for an .AppImage

I searched through the forums and can't find anything on packaging an AppImage. The only app referenced (upwork-appimage) is no longer available. The particular AppImage in question is: https://github.com/robert7/nixnote2/releases How do I search this mailing list online? What advice would you give with .AppImages? I *could* rip it open, but the only snag I hit was the binary is linked to `libhunspell-1.3.so.0` whereas Arch has `/usr/lib/libhunspell-1.6.so.0`. Would it be a no-no to install this previous libhunspell version in /usr/lib? If using an unextacted AppImage, where should I install the .AppImage itself? /usr/bin/$pkgname.AppImage with a simlink from /usr/bin/$pkgname? Cheers, -- Tom Hale

Hello, fellow Archers. My name is Brett and I've been making PKGBUILDs for the AUR for some time under the moniker 'Ainola'. A number of these packages have been kindly pulled into [community] by David Runge. I've since had a desire to get some of my other packages into [community], so I'm interested in working towards getting TU status. I'm also involved in the LibreOffice community (I just got back from the conference in Albania). David has been kind enough to give suggestions to my current packages; I'd love to nab some other packages throughout the AUR, improve them, and get them included in the repositories for mass consumption. I would also like to improve the documentation for the devtools: There are no manpages, /usr/share/docs/ items, or wiki articles. Unless I'm mistaken it appears that the only documentation that currently exists is just invoking the program with -h. I'd like to fix that. :)

I noticed that even when namcap prints out errors, it still exits 0. I raised this at: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/60333 It was closed: Reason for closing: Not a bug Additional comments about closing: namcap runs fine, so exiting with an error makes no sense To me the "reason for closing" is like saying that diff should exit 0 when two files are different because diff ran fine. If namcap is to be used in any automated packaging tools (or even my dodgy script), then it makes sense to have meaningful exit codes. And possibly an option to also have warnings also exit non-0 for the persnickety amongst us. I note that the python source returns 0 and 2, but never 1. I'm a newbie here, but I believe my argument has merit, so I raise it here for possible discussion. -- Tom Hale

Hi all, I use to install AUR package fotoxx. I get some zappcrash message when closing the application an would like to help the author finding the bug. The author sent adapted source packages to get more debugging information. I tried change the PKGBUILD's "pkgrel"- variable to generate several packages containing debugging symbols, but at the end of the build this message looks suspicous: .. -> Stripping unneeded symbols from binaries and libraries... .. What makes packages keep debugging symbols? Tips? Keywords for wiki search? Any hints welcome :o)) -- Friedrich

Hi all, I'm writing to hopefully get some clarity on some packages that I maintained in AUR (python-awkward-array, unuran), but have been overtaken now in [community]. Also one other package that I have not maintained 'libafterimage', but dear to me. Firstly, thanks to Felix Yan for picking them up and sorry if the following questions have been asked before and obvious to everyone. This is what I know: 1. Nothing in the core repos depends on them and they are libraries. I've not seen requests to add them before. 2. 'libafterimage' includes a bug that has been reported to AUR, but has not been fixed. I've had to include a patch in my local chain. 3. The packages do not provide the same functionality as before, but conflict with the AUR ones. 4. I wasn't told anything - my AUR package was deleted with a 'thanks for maintaining it' message. 5. I've reported a few bugs FS#6024{6,7,8}, but have been denied resolution. The reason I'm asking is because over the years I've added and been maintaining some professional software and these packages are part of that chain. Colleagues in the field have become accustomed to me for packaging with care and updating with new features. But now, obviously that is changing and people are going to flock if something doesn't work as expected. So this is sort of me getting ahead of the wind and basically asking the question: - Why? - How many & which will be put into [community]? - How can I effectively communicate the nuts & bolts to the new maintenaners so to say, to make sure users still get what's expected? - Is there anything I can do if new packages do not meet what the original intention was - apart from making a conflicting AUR package? Now, although it is not officially supported again they just launched the ability to upload Custom Images into DigitalOcean. Hello! Back in 2014, I sent the same request for owncloud-client. This time, I'd like to suggest nextcloud-client [1] as a potential candidate for [community]. It has 240 votes, nextcloud (the webapp) is already in [community], while owncloud (webapp) was moved to AUR a long time ago. Please note Nextcloud client is fully compatible with Owncloud server, and vice versa. [aur-general] Notification upon requests

Hi, I just noticed due to a comment on the package's web page that a package I co-maintain [0] was requested to be deleted (due to being taken into [community]). I'd have expected to get an e-mail when such a request is made, however I did not receive any such e-mail. I have also enabled notifications for that package, if that matters. [aur-general] IJulia and Julia library/module packages

Hello everyone. Julia [1], a scientific/numerical computing-focussed programming language, recently went 1.0. It primarily focuses on user-local module installation (into $HOME/.julia), similar to conda, rustup, zef, etc. This is obviously fine for individuals but not great for deployment on a larger scale. Currently, no distributions that I'm aware of (i.e. Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Arch) package modules for system-wide installation. I spent a few hours this afternoon putting together a package chain for IJulia [2] (which adds a Julia back-end/kernel to Jupyter). As there's no precedent or approach (I'm aware of) for system-wide Julia module installation I'm looking for some testing and feedback to ensure this approach will operate in an equivalent way to the standard Pkg.add("IJulia"). From the limited testing I've done IJulia _appears_ to work OK but I've not tried anything particularly fancy. I'm also interested in any general PKGBUILD feedback, including any depends which should be makedepends or checkdepends. If you find an easy way to tell what should be what then I'm all ears! Of particular note is the very hacky way of creating files which would otherwise be generated by Pkg.build()... there _must_ be a cleaner way of doing that. Hi all, My name is Chih-Hsuan Yen. I'm also known as yan12125. I am applying to be a Trusted User with Felix Yan's sponsorship. I'm currently a PhD student in Taiwan. My Linux journey started when I met Ubuntu in 2011. Soon after that, I jumped to Arch Linux in 2012 for its simplicity. During my spare time, I'm active in open source stuffs. You may find some interesting bits on my GitHub [1] and GitLab [2] accounts. Most of my Arch contributions can be found on AUR [3]. Besides that, I'm also an Arch Linux tester and a member of Arch Linux China community, keeping some binary packages in the unofficial repo [archlinuxcn] up-to-date [4]. If I'm accepted as a TU, I'd like to improve the ecosystem for Arch users speaking Chinese. Specifically, I'll keep an eye on Chinese IME (Input Method Engine) and font packages, including but not limited to the following ones: - libchewing - the core library for a Chinese input method "Chewing" - scim-chewing - the SCIM adaptor for the chewing input method - ttf-arphic-ukai - a popular font in Taiwan - ttf-arphic-uming - another popular font in Taiwan Both libchewing and scim-chewing are in [extra] now. As they have no other reverse dependencies in [extra], I assume it's possible to move them to [community] for further maintenance. Also, as a Python developer, I'm interesting in making Python packages in Arch Linux even better. I'd like to bring the following packages to [community]: - buildbot - the main program of a continuous integration framework [5] - buildbot-worker - running commands dispatched by the master - python-buildbot-{www,console-view,grid-view,waterfall-view,wsgi-dashboards,badges} - buildbot plugins - python-buildbot-pkg - an auxiliary package for building buildbot plugins from sources. I'll create a stable version from my buildbot-pkg-git package. - python-{aws-xray-sdk,jsondiff,klein,moto,nose-random,pathlib2,pyjade,setuptools-trial,txrequests} - direct or indirect runtime/build-time/check-time dependencies for buildbot-related packages I'd like to improve dependency handling for Python packages in Namcap as well. I guest the TU's workload may be calculated by a. How many packages which he owns. b. How many commits during a past year c. How many bugs required to solved? To print out by graph maybe interesting. These may be calculated by some SQL if owned the access permission of database. For person without permission may pull the packages and bugs listing and git log to get that picture

My name is Santiago Torres-Arias[1], and I'm a Mexican PhD candidate from New York University. My research focuses on securing the dev-ops pipeline/supply chain, which includes work on package manager security, version control system security, securing container orchestrators, reproducible builds, so on and so forth. It is not a coincidence that all of these relate strongly with Linux; I believe the Linux environment pretty much shaped my professional career since I was in High School. I've been a GNU/Linux user for more than I can remember, although I started using it exclusively circa 2011. I started using Debian, Mint and Ubuntu interchangeably for a couple of years and, as time passed, I started to develop personal scripts and unscrew my deterministically-broken distro (I still remember my hook to fix the fglrx install every time X was updated). This experience threw me to the other side, and for a while I thought I could maintain my own LFS-based distribution with scripts of this sort, which led me to learn a lot about what *not* to do when managing packages. However, It was when I finally decided to give Arch a serious try (around 2014) that I found myself enamored with not only the toolchains, but the community and the philosophy behind the distribution --- I'm now a strong supporter of the Arch Way(tm) thanks to all the leasons learned through the winding roads of linux-system-administration. Although I've always been an assiduous user of the AUR, not only using but writing my own PKGBUILDs, It was only until recently (about 8 months now), that I've been working towards becoming more familiar with the package ecosystem with the end goal of becoming a TU. I've received feedback from many members on the community on how to fix, extend and follow best practices on writing PKGBUILDS which I believe has improved their quality[2]. Besides maintaining packages I've been contributing to other aspects of the Arch Linux ecosystem for about three years now. I've participated in the security team almost since its inception, by providing code to the tracker, tracking CVE's and sending advisories. Likewise, I've been a tester for more than a year. I've also participated (although not as much as I've wanted) on the archlinux-reproducible efforts. Finally, I've worked along with shibumi and Pierre in making an automated build of an official Archlinux Docker image. Beyond Arch Linux, I'm a committer to projects like reproducible-builds.org[3], Briar[4], neomutt[5], and The Update Framework (TUF)[6], among others[7]. There are two main reasons for this application to become a TU. First, I want to contribute *more* to a community that has given me so much, and I'm certain that helping packaging tools for everyone in the community repository will only improve the overall user experience. Second, and most importantly, I want to expand the offer of packages in the official repositories. Concretely, I want to maintain the following packages: - Orphaned packages (I'm a regular user of these): - giblib (currently on extra) - python-pylint (currently on extra) - uthash - znc - cvf - netctl (?! currently on core, so I suspect I can't maintain this one) - python-opencl/pyopencl-headers - I'd love to co-maintain some packages that have a packager right now**: - radare-cutter - hub - rtl-sdr - maven - I intend to move the following packages from the AUR: - reprotest - git-latexdiff - python-rstr - python2-grip - inxi - plex-fonts Needless to say, I'm open to discussion on this list. Keras recently moved two of its submodules to separate modules---keras-applications, and keras-preprocessing [1]. These also import keras and will not work without it, nor will keras work without those submodules. Currently the submodule packages depend on keras, but making keras depend on the submodules creates unresolvable circular dependencies. Currently the submodules are listed as optional dependencies of keras with the note that keras will not work without them. This seems like a problem to me. Someone wanting to install keras will be able to do so without installing the submodules but won't be able to use it without them. The only warning will be the optional dependencies which seems insufficient to me. Since both actually depend on the other(s) to work, the only solution I can see is to include them all in the python-keras package. Is there any other way to resolve this? Let's get to the part where you get to know me a bit more I am a Portuguese student and I use Linux as my main operating system since 2013. I gave Arch a try last year and I've been in love with it's ecosystem ever since. Since then, I started contributing to AUR and I've been maintaining quite a few packages. I am also fairly active in the Open Source community as you can see in my Github profile[1]. I love to help people and that is my main motivation to become a TU. If I do become a Trusted User, one thing I would like to do is to improve the usability of Arch for SDR (software defined raio) development. I think Arch is a great system for this and it's a bit of a shame that one of the most relevant packages (soapysdr) isn't in any official repo. Most of the work to improve the SDR support in Arch has been done by Kyle Keen, and I thank him for that, but I still think we could do a bit more. I don't plan to only maintain SDR related packages. I would like to maintain anything that I use, or anything that is relevant to anyone, really. If it makes someone's life easier it's a win. With that being said, here's a list of packages that I plan to move to community: - soapysdr - soapyrtlsdr - libratbag - piper - tribler - qspectrumanalyzer - pulseaudio-equalizer-ladspa - synology-cloud-station-drive Some comments on the packages, (soapysdr and soapyrtlsdr) soapysdr is a vendor neutral SDR driver[2] and soapyrtlsdr is the rtlsdr plugin for it. The non -git versions of the packages are quite recent so they don't have much votes yet. Their correspondent -git variants have enough votes. (libratbag and piper) libratbag is a DBus daemon to configure gaming mice[3] and piper is a GTK+ app to interface with it. I do not maintain this packages but I contribute to the upstream development. It would be helpful for the project if they were moved to an official repo as we are thinking about changing our CI's base distribution from Fedora to Arch. (tribler) Tribler is a popular torrent client with P2P content discovery[4]. (qspectrumanalyzer) This is a popular spectrum analyser for SDR devices[5]. It uses soapysdr as its default driver so it supports a wide range of SDR devices. (pulseaudio-equalizer-ladspa) This is a pulseaudio equalizer based on a ladspa plugin. It has a nice GTK+ based front-end to configure it. (synology-cloud-station-drive) This is a drive client for Synology devices[6]. [aur-general] Attempting to update upwork-beta, and hit a head-scratcher

I got an AUR Out-of-date Notification from msheremet on upwork-beta. After digging through Upwork app logs and checking their website, apparently they've pushed the update to their download website, but not to the client apps yet (at least, not to mine. ;-) However, I'm sending the changes from my laptop and I had never added my public key on my laptop, and when I went to log in to the AUR to copy the pubkey to my ~/.ssh/config, AUR informs me that my account has been suspended. I never received any kind of notification that my account was suspended, or why. As far as I can recall, my best guess would be that it was because I had stupidly published a bug comment to the aurman AUR page and was harshly schooled by the aurman developer that his package depends on a -git package, which had to be installed manually because, again, stupidly, I didn't know that -git packages' PKGBUILDs don't contain the current version, but is instead calculated during install. If that's why, after I understood the issue I just shrugged and went on with my life, and wasn't aware there was a continuing problem until I tried to push updates. I'm more than happy to push my changes if I can; if it can't be reinstated, though, then I'd at least like to know why, please; and if it's going to be impossible to reinstate, then someone at the very least needs to mark upwork-beta as orphaned so someone else can take over.

Hey, First of all I just want to say that I have 58 packages on AUR and most of the PKGBUILDs (written by me) were written before I knew some of this. I tried to update most of them but as it's a really monotonous task, I missed some things. Eli, thanks for pointing them out. Also, most of these packages were orphan and I adopted them, I did not fix some of the mistakes right away because I didn't know these were indeed mistakes. With the time I learned about them but I didn't fix some of the packages because I have a lot of them. I have been fixing them as people point it out or when the PKGBUILD needs to be manually updated. Lately I have been making an effort to fix everything but apparently it wasn't enough. Hi, I've run into a general issue with software packages that use a configuration directory, aggregate configs therein using a glob rule on the filenames, and contain an example config. An example is `community/consul`, which - globs for `/etc/consul.d/*.{hcl,json}` - contains `/etc/consul.d/example.json` When I configure these types of software first I delete the example file, and then place additional configs in that directory, with everything working as expected. Then an upgrade for that package rolls around, and the example config is recreated. This usually means that as soon as the software reloads, the recreated example config gets loaded, too, and the software tends to fail or behave in byzantine ways. After consulting the wiki about this [0], I had assumed that this is the "original = X, current = Y, new = X" case and the example config shouldn't be recreated, but it seems deletion isn't handled the same as modification here. (.pacnew files aren't an issue since the glob rule is in place) What is the proper way to deal with these example configs? Truncate them to force the XYX upgrade case, which seems hacky? Set `NoUpgrade` [1] in the PKGBUILD, assuming this is applicable here? I ask this here because my `aur/nomad-bin` package has this exact problem. Hi all - I'd like to use pacman to manage R packages, similar to how you can for other languages (e.g. the python packages are all named python-*). There are some packages available already, but not many (I count about 130 currently). I wrote a script[1] that generates PKGBUILDS for all the packages on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). There's 12,593 packages on CRAN as of today. If you evaluate the script, then call write_all_pkgbuilds(), R will put each PKGBUILD into PKGBUILDS/r-cran-<pkgname>/PKGBUILD. Here's an example of the output.[2] It doesn't generate .SRCINFO or setup a git repo (yet). It also doesn't take into account (yet) that there are already 130ish R packages on the AUR. I named them r-cran-* rather than r-* because 1) it's clearer where the packages are coming from and 2) it's a pain to search for r-* Is this something people would like to have in the AUR? I've stopped using Arch ever since I've switched to GuixSD[1] (a functional-oriented distribution focusing on reproducible builds and completely custimizable in Guile Scheme) and it's now quite clear that there will be no coming back. My involvement in this new project and in others (Emacs, Next Browser[2]) takes a lot more time than what I can afford into maintaining my Arch packages. Hi, The qutebrowser package in community has been behind for quite a while, and unfortunately it fails to start on qt 5.11, so it would be nice to have it bumped before that happens. I noticed that the install fails when bumping the version, due to adding a PREFIX variable instead of hardcoding /usr: https://github.com/qutebrowser/qutebrowser/pull/3844 Per the packaging standards here, this should be /usr/ instead of /usr/local, so I changed it back, and it seems to work properly again: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_packaging_standards Here is the finished patch. [aur-general] Advice needed on bundling a specific Python library

Hi all, I'm the maintainer of pyfa [1][2], a tool for EVE Online players. I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to include an arbitrary version of a Python library into the package? The problem is that the current version of python-wxpython in community has a bug that causes the latest version of pyfa to crash, and the pyfa developers have set a hard requirement of wxPython == 4.0.0b2 [3] (the issue will apparently by fixed in 4.0.2). What's the best or most elegant way to handle this? The only thing I can think of is using pip to install this version into my $pkgdir and setting PYTHONPATH in the startup shell script to force pyfa to use the bundled version. However, I'm not sure of this and would like any pointers or better a better way to handle it. Cheers. [aur-general] Deletion of discord-updater{,-canary}?

discord-updater is quite a confusing package to me. I'm not sure is I should file a deletion request for it. When discord needs an update it will refuse to start until it is updated. This package appears to be designed to download the latest discord .tar.gz and extract it to ~/.local. By passing the need to wait for updates on the main discord AUR package. My question here is does this count as a duplicate to discord? And even if it does not should this really be in the AUR in the first place? It is just a simple script really. For future reference I would appreciate if anyone can tell me the correct place to send this sort of thing. Here, to aur-requests or type it into the request box on the AUR page. Also on a similar topic, the package discord-always-canary was removed from the AUR by Eschwartz. This package is essentially discord-canary with a pkgver() function. Meanwhile firefox-always-nightly is still on the AUR and is essentially the same idea. Is there a reason the discord-always-canary can not exist, similar to pkg and pkg-git? I get they comparison is not exactly the same because both discord packages source stable versions. Instead would it be a good idea to add a pkgver() function to the main discord packages? As mentioned discord will refuse to start when out of date, so most users are stuck waiting for the maintainer to update it.

Hi, a week ago i submitted an orphan request for Discord-PTB https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/discord-ptb/. It finally got accepted but the co-maintainer 'discordapp' got set as the maintainer so I can not adopt this package. As far as I know 'discordapp' is an account owned by one of the Discord devs, I believe it's just there in case they need it, the account does not seem to actively do anything nor reply to comments. I would hate to wait another week for an orphan request to go through, is there a way this could be bypassed as I did just wait a week?

IMO it should stay untouched unless the dependencies, URL, sources, etc. change and perhaps if it's required to build against an updated lib, too. I've recently written a paragraph on how to build Arch Linux packages on pkgbuild.com (a.k.a. soyuz): https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_Trusted_User_Guidelines#Remote_bui… To perform the complete operation on soyuz, we need to forward the gpg-socket (and the SSH socket if different) to soyuz, which defeats the PGP / Web of Trust security model: for a person with root access to soyuz, the private key is only one passphrase away. Thoughts? As I understand it for now, the full-PGP way to package on soyuz is to only run extra-x86_64-build there. All other operations can be run locally. The only area where I'm left in the dark is the "archrelease" step of "communitypkg": what's the equivalent on a foreign distribution? -- Pierre Neidhardt

So I resurrected llvm35 from extra, brushed it up a little so that it compiles again (also bumped the package revision), and tried to upload it to the AUR under the previous package name llvm35. Can we get more explanation for this? This isn't a version bump. This project was rewritten from scratch, the old sources are gone. The PKGBUILD was written from scratch, packagement solutions were upstreamed[1]. Upstream points specifically to this package[2]. Archlinux repo maintainer wasn't involved at all with those and there is no info if he's interested in maintaining the new v2 version. [aur-general] packaging error in network manager?

I just updated my machine and rebooted, the network manager failed to get up. Checking the journal logs I get message that /usr/bin/NetworkManager can't read the shared library libpsl.so.6 I only have libpsl.so.5 on my system. Hello, I'm Robin 'coderobe' Broda, born in '99, and I'm writing to become a Trusted User. I've been an Arch user since ~2014, using it on several devices including most of my servers. I'm more or less active on IRC, very interested in open-source development[0], federated networks, & reproducible builds - and would like to increase the amount of reproducible packages in Arch. I maintain a couple of PKGBUILDs in the AUR and I'm looking to adopt more[2]. Eli Schwartz has agreed to sponsor my application. After becoming a TU, I'd like to look into promoting a couple of packages from the AUR over time, including but not limited to `rutorrent`, `psensor`, `glava` (currently `glava-git`, waiting for tagged releases), `gtkhash`, `streem`, & `polybar` - assuming that no issues preventing the packaging (& inclusion in the repos) turn up and the popularity/votes are high enough to warrant inclusion. I would also like to potentially tackle some of the TODOs[1]. As mentioned earlier, I also plan to look into reproducibility issues and improving the infrastructure around reproducible builds (and the verification thereof). Hello, I've updated my package [0][1], but the web form is displaying the update with the old version and old attributes (i.e. I've updated to v2.1.0-1 and it is displayed as a new v2.0.0-2 version, which is a bug in the web UI). Hi there, I am co-maintaining a few AUR packages written in Golang and I just ran namcap on my built package. I got the following output on a few of my golang packages: $ namcap influxdb-1.4.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz influxdb E: Dependency glibc detected and not included (libraries ['usr/lib/libpthread.so.0', 'usr/lib/libc.so.6'] needed in files ['usr/bin/influx_inspect', 'usr/bin/influx_stress', 'usr/bin/influx', 'usr/bin/influx_tsm', 'usr/bin/influxd']) However 'glibc' is in the base group, and I thought that it wasn't necessary to declare dependencies from the base group since it should always be installed on a fresh OS install. Am I wrong about this point? Should I be including 'glibc' as a dependency in this package? Should I be including 'bash' as a dependency in packages with scripts that use bash? Thank you! I just made a merge-request for a package I maintain. But I'm curious about what this actually means in practice when it's merged. Will current users be notified in some way? Will they be redirected to the new package? Or is it just about the votes? Hi all, Perhaps this is a bit unorthodox, but in 2011 I resigned from my post as a TU for personal and time-related reasons [1]. Coming up on almost 7 years later, I'm still an avid Arch user, and have struck a balance in my life where I'm much more capable of contributing to open-source projects than I was back then. The warm regards and well-wishes from my fellow TUs at the time [2][3] have left an extremely positive impression on me, and I find myself once again wanting to pick up some orphaned packages in [community] (surprisingly, the MATE desktop is homeless). Therefore, I'm writing this message to see if there's any interest in getting another helping hand around here. Neat program! It currently doesn't handle release candidate version tags. For example, $ aur-out-of-date -pkg influxdb [OUT-OF-DATE] [influxdb] Package influxdb should be updated from 1.4.3-1 to 1.5.0rc4 It might be worth adding an option to ignore version tags that end in 'rc*'. Or perhaps make that the default and add a flag to *not* ignore release candidate tags. I'm sure there are other conventions for post-fixes on version tags that indicate pre release or testing status. Maybe a more flexible way to go would be to offer an environment variable or option for setting a list of regexes to disregard if matched. Thanks! Adam Levy

[aur-general] Issue with proper packaging

Hi, I'm having trouble making a package under the Arch Packaging Standards. The package in question is `simpletools`. The problem I'm having is that if I use `prepare()` & `build()` directives as intended, then the target `make install` does not exist when called from inside `package()` directive. I'm wondering if this is an issue because of the way `makepkg` pulls it over git and later handles it, or is it some problem with the CMake configuration in the software itself? I haven't been able to replicate this in a manual way, because obviously when run manually the configuration is persisted locally. Any comments? -- Regards, Konstantin

Hi, folks, I'm writing to apply to be a TU, and Alad Wenter has kindly agreed to be my sponsor. I've been an Arch user for the last 10 years or so. Some of you may know me from IRC or the forums, where I use the nick escondida. Lately, I've been much less active on IRC, but have contributed a handful of patches to pacman. I also maintain [a few buildscripts][1] in the AUR. Arch has always been a rewarding community to contribute to, and I figure that maintaining some packages and generally helping out could be a good way to contribute a bit more. If accepted to be a TU, my plan of action is as follows: 1. Go mad with power^U 1. Bring a handful of packages into [community] (see below) 2. Help out with rebuilds and package updates where that does not involve stepping on toes 3. Continue to submit occasional patches to Arch projects 4. Help with to-do lists. Hello, DDNet is a very fun sidescrolling game, similar to Teeworlds (DDNet is actually a mod of Teeworlds). Since Teeworlds's development is very slow and DDNet's development is very active, a lot of players migrated to DDNet, which allows to play both gametypes of Teeworlds and many others of DDNet. Hi aur-general, as a maintainer of fifty-something AUR packages I found it difficult to keep track of new upstream versions. I would subscribe to various RSS feeds to keep track of some. Recently, I sat down and wrote a tool "aur-out-of-date" which, given a username or a list of packages, checks upstream for newer versions. It does so by inspecting the upstream URL and/or source URL, and calling a suitable API (github.com, registry.npmjs.org, pypi.python.org, cpan.org for now) to determine the latest released version. Out-of-date packages are output in red color on the command line. Point #2 calls out "performed any action that required TU privileges on the AUR", but does the tu voting interface on aurweb count as that or not? Moreover, do we *want* it to count? It seems to be somewhat defeating the purpose of the process, i.e. as long as a TU doesn't actually block quorum during a vote, they can remain while not actually performing any of the inherent functions of a TU. Now, I would argue that under a common sense interpretation the original intent of the bylaws was almost certainly that voting does not count as a "TU privilege", since a TU is someone who has the "privilege" to administrate AUR packages and users in order to keep good order, and select good packages to upload to [community]. But bylaws exist in order to prevent people from having different interpretations of common sense. Hi, I did git commit and git push into AUR from a PC at my workplace using company email address accidentally, but it is a policy at our company, that email address must not to be public. Can I clean that anyway? I have set my public email address and tried git commit --amend --reset-author using the right email but hook declined. If a TU can rewrite the git history, please write me a private email message.

Hi all. There are two packages that were just recently orphaned, dvdstyler, and one of its dependencies, wxsvg. I would be willing to adopt these packages if no one else does, but I'm not a programmer and would rather not. I'm pretty sure that dvdstyler is the only application of it's kind for linux, so I'm assuming it's useful to many. Is anyone willing to adopt these packages? Are there alternatives for dvd menu creation (gui) that I'm not aware of?

Hello, I recently became the co-maintainer of the plex-sub-zero package [1]. I pushed to it's repo, but the version isn't being updated on the AUR. Should the AUR update when I push, or does the maintainer need to do anything? If you check out the PKGBUILD, it shows the updated file. The gnustep-* packages are currently orphaned. Only oolite depends on it but I don't really care much about either. Does anyone want to maintain the gnustep packages? If I don't hear anything until the end of the month, I'll drop them as well as oolite to the AUR.

What happened? It's unmaintained because it doesn't build (since July 20 when I removed the autotools based build upstream and moved to meson as the build system). I put in a comment on the pkg page that the AUR pkg build was broken ages ago and offered to take over maintenance in the package comments but got no reply and now the package page at least has disappeared. How about restoring it? I can also take over maintenance as I have kept a git clone of rage-git and moved it to meson locally (have not pushed). Hello, all. :) My name is Eli Schwartz, better known as eschwartz on the forums[1], AUR[2], bugtracker[3], wiki[4] general mailing lists, IRC, and generally everywhere I can stick my nose in. With the aid of Bartłomiej Piotrowski, I am applying today to become a TU. I'm 24 years old, and currently studying Computer Science in the United States. I've been interested in Linux ever since I was first introduced to it in high school, when I asked "what would be the best Linux distro to install if I really want to learn how things work", and I was recommended to try out Arch Linux. It's a choice I haven't regretted since! Outside of Linux my main hobby is books/ebooks (primarily SF&F of all sorts). I have leveraged this nicely to feed back into software which deals with ebooks. :) ... I've now been an active member of the Arch Linux community for approximately 3.5 years, and in that time I've become a member of the Arch Bug Wranglers team, given an Arch Classroom tutorial[5], contributed a few small patches to various Arch projects, mainly pacman[6], and generally hung out on the forums and in IRC, trying to be helpful. Recently I've been doing a bit of general helping out in #archlinux-reproducible[7] as well. I've always been especially interested in packaging for Arch Linux, and have reviewed many PKGBUILDs on this mailing list as well as in the AUR Issues, Discussion & PKGBUILD Requests subforum and in #archlinux-aur, written a popular script for maintaining AUR packages[8], and featured the topic of packaging for Arch Linux in the above-mentioned Arch Classroom tutorial. I anticipate doing all^W^W^Wmost of this in a somewhat more formal role. :) I would like to become a TU in order to contribute more to Arch Linux in general (because it would be a shame to miss out on one particular angle I guess). It would also give me more scope to help fix simple packaging bugs that come up on the bugtracker, help resolve some policy TODOs[9], fix packages which no longer build due to e.g. missing sources (many such packages have been discovered in part due to the valiant efforts of Reproducible Arch Linux and Arch Linux 32), and of course to bring some packages to [community] that I feel would do well there. If given the opportunity, I would consider bringing the following packages to community: - firefox-extension-https-everywhere (I conmaintain this) - fanficfare (I maintain this) - git-crypt - advancecomp - llpp - wikicurses - ghi - dtrx - checkbashisms I would adopt the cinnamon desktop packages, as faidoc is not very active currently and arojas, who currently builds them, says he'd prefer someone who actually uses it to do so. I've also received permission to comaintain sigil and qbittorrent, as well as calibre and its dependencies (I maintain the -git packages for all three in the AUR, and have contributed most of the calibre PKGBUILD as well).
