[arch-general] Netbook recommendations

So in the next few weeks, I would like to buy a netbook. The market is saturated, so I'd like to ask for some advice here. What do you guys think of the current offerings? What's considered "the best" now-a-days? What kinds of netbooks do Arch users have?

Hello all, Thing is: I live in Brazil, here laptops are way overpriced and I have a friend who's going to US next month and said he could buy me a laptop. I started searching websites of a few stores I knew and eventually found a one that I immediately fell in love with: Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 4189-2DU http://www.circuitcity.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=… So I was wondering if any of you has one, or has another Lenovo laptop and your opinions about it. [arch-general] Opera Tip -- Use QT/GTK file Open/Save dialogs

Archers, I have always liked the opera browser, but one thing that has really sucked about it was the crappy file open/file save dialogs opera comes with. Picking around tonight, I ran across an option in opera's configuration that allows you to choose the file selector dialogs to use. It is cryptic as hell, but I found the commit page for the changes and got the needed information. To make use of real kde4 open/save dialogs in opera, got to the config page by typing "opera:config" into the address bar, the scroll down to "File Selector", then change the setting to "2". The commit notes say: 0 - normal 1 - Qt 2 - GTK For some reason, I couldn't get Qt to work, so I select "2" for GTK, and Bingo! I had usable dialogs in opera (you may need to restart opera). What a relief. If you use opera, it's worth a look. While on the subject, you might want to check out the C00-14, Keramik and crystal_onyx_bull skins. Opera has come a long way in 10.0 -- David C. Hi, device-mapper & lvm2 2.02.52-1 are now in testing. Update: - Minor upstream update: lvm2: 2.02.48 -> 2.02.52 device-mapper: 1.02.33 -> 1.02.37 - Implemented split package. For this to work, I had to set the package version of device-mapper to 2.02.52 as I found out that the dbscripts can't handle split packages with different pkgver. -Renamed pkgconfig file (close FS#15909) Please test and signoff. Users signoff would be appreciated as very few dev uses this. Eric

[arch-general] Why doesn't Arch show full kernel version in uname-r?

Guys, When I do uname -r to get the kernel name, I never get the full versions information about the installed kernel. Example, tonight, the new kernel is: kernel26-2.6.31.1-1-x86_64 but when I do a uname -r, I only see: "2.6.31-ARCH". That doesn't tell me anything about the minor version, etc. and if that information is wanted, then you have to look at the cache or some other software package that would disclose this. As another example, on an older suse box I have uname -r gives: 2.6.25.20-0.5-pae. That tells me exactly version I'm running. Any reason the rest of the version string inst included in this naming? [arch-general] xmonad and java environment

Hi all, I've installed openproj from AUR and met the following issue: the program runs, but the main GUI window is blank (no buttons, menus - nothing), although the dialog windows appear normal. I don't have much experience with java, and tried both jre and openjdk6 - with the same result. Then I tried to run openproj without any window manager, and it worked! I noticed that openjdk6 warns: when you use a non-reparenting window manager set _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1 in /etc/profile.d/openjdk6.sh So the setting of that env. variable indeed helps with openjdk6, but not with jre. [arch-general] Failover to LTS in the Arch boot processt?

Guys, I'm curious. Since there is now an LTS kernel, has anyone thought about adding a few lines of code to the Arch boot process that would provide for automatic failover to the LTS kernel in the event the normal kernel failed to load during the boot process. The thought is to provide redundancy for servers in the case where the regular kernel becomes corrupt (for whatever reason, disk problem, etc...) and a reboot is forced (exhausted UPS, etc..) I don't know what it would take or if it is doable. I had just envisioned adding a trap that catches the failure of the regular kernel to boot, checks for the presence of the LTS kernel, and if installed boots the LTS kernel in this case. I haven't looked deep enough into the Arch boot process to know if it is feasible, but it just seemed like a good bit of extra protection that Arch could provide for server installs where the server operates on the regular kernel but also has LTS installed as a backup. I'll leave it to the gurus to consider. If it's not doable or not worth doing, then just consider it another of my stray thoughts worthy of the DEL key ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
