So far I am only testing how systemd behaves in my system and what changes I need to do before I permanently make the switch. So far the first problem, which doesn't seem to be covered in the wiki, forum or google searches, is that if I switch to a tty after starting X I get just a blank screen. I also get a blank screen and no prompt after I logout from the DE. The conditions that seem to trigger the problem are: I don't use any login managers so I use startx to start my DE of choice (xfce). I have increased the number of available ttys as described here [1] and after booting everything seems to be working fine, since I have the expected number of ttys and I can login at each one of them. Getting local permissions was also taken care of by following [2], for testing purposes I use 'startx -- vt1 &> xlog.log' and I've confirmed that it works as expected. The problem: After starting X, if I switch to any of the ttys with ctrl-alt-f* I get only a blank screen, this includes the ttys that have not been used to start X. After logging out of the DE I get a blank screen at all ttys, including the one used to start X. The machine is otherwise still responsive. Any clues, tips or pointers on how to get this to work are welcome. [arch-general] Random X server crashes

Hi, Occasionally (while using google chrome) my X server crashes completely and takes me back to the tty login. Examining the journal entries reveals the following highlighted in red: Sep 23 17:03:33 myarchbox kernel: [drm] nouveau 0000:00:05.0: fail ttm_validate Sep 23 17:03:34 myarchbox kernel: [drm] nouveau 0000:00:05.0: validate vram_list Sep 23 17:03:34 myarchbox kernel: [drm] nouveau 0000:00:05.0: validate: -12 I am using the nouveau driver for my Nvidia graphics card. The problem is difficult to reproduce as it happens quite randomly - for instance I might be opening some particular website and it will crash. If I insist on opening the same website again it might crash a second time but it will work the third time or so. Is this a universal experience of using nouveau on Nvidia cards or is it something that is only afflicting my computer? [arch-general] sleep + lid events + kde => new problem

Using fully updated testing repo - starting 'recently' - I notice that lid close no longer sleeps my laptop. Kde power is configured to sleep on lid close. If i click the menu and choose sleep manually - it sleeps fine - and subsequently wakes fine on lid-open. I can confirm with this little shell loop (left running and then close lid and reopen) that acpi shows lid is indeed closed: while [[ 1 == 1 ]] > do > cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state > sleep 1 > done state: open state: open state: open state: open state: closed state: closed state: closed state: closed state: open state: open So, it -seems- as if lid-event is not being passed along for some reason to the (kde) power management - or not being listened to. I have not yet switched to systemd - and I'm not sure which process is responsible for such events. It still happens with 3.5.4 kernel if that makes any difference. It is a W520 lenovo laptop. Anyone else notice similar - or can offer suggestions? Thanks. gene/

[arch-general] finally got a talking archlinux installed!

Creation of a separate /boot partition helped. I did it with syslinux, and have partition structure of /dev/sda1 /boot 50MB /dev/sda2 swap 1024MB /dev/sda3 /mnt 15440MB and /dev/sda4 /home remainder of the disk. Since in this configuration, /dev/sda3 correctly points to /root I left it alone but edited syslinux.cfg to point at linux-lts and also changed ro to rw at the end of those append lines. I did that after booting the machine and waiting an hour then hitting enter to get anything going. I heard archlinux start talking but also heard message failed to create secure directory again. So the rw on those append lines has if only temporarily enabled this system and disk writes to work. I don't have authority to edit the beginner's guide, and do have to question if anyone really did follow those instructions to the letter and come out of it with a working system. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- jude <jdashiel(a)shellworld.net> Adobe fiend for failing to Flash

Hello! I've installed an x86_64 Arch on a PC with 8 GB, but it seems to be seeing just four. What have I done wrong? Bios sees 4 x 2GB Modules and reports 8 GB, but top or free report only 4 GB. Best Regards Guillermo Leira

Hello. I noticed that libffado was updated recently. It looks like that the new version of libffado is incompatible with the version of jack in the arch repos. [arch-general] NetworkManager update - problematic for ipw2200

I was away for a few days but this evening returned and updated a laptop which has ipw2200 wireless - and the updates included NetworkManager 0.9.6 - after rebooting the machine the wireless connection fails within seconds - despite ifconfig and ifconfig showing a normal connection - this is for a KDE D.E. with plasma networkmanagement which was also updated this evening. This now shows what appears to be a normal wireless signal strength which has not been the case for a long time - but the connection is a major bug. I have seen another post on the forums where a user has similar problems to me but with different wireless hardware. It is odd - the key indicators seem to show that the connection is fine but a browser fails to connect - ssh will connect but the connection will hang within seconds. pacman fails to connect to the servers except very very slowly and times out - despite another arch machine working perfectly well with different wireless hardware! Anyone else seeing something similar? I guess I will need to downgrade networkmanager till this is fixed. -- mike c

I read not too long ago that one of the major distros is switching to PAE by default but I forget which distro, maybe Ubuntu.
