Hi all, I just discovered this morning I can't talk on #archlinux anymore. My user (gabx666) is banned!! Never flamed or be rude, never flood, slow activity. Any idea why? How can I solve this? Thank you

Conky redirect output of /var/everything.log. [arch-general] mostly successful install of talkingarchlinux

Two situations are a bit puzzling after installation for me. 1) on booting the system it doesn't matter what is in syslinux.cfg, enter must be hit to turn sound on and finish the login. I've adjusted prompt from 0 to 1 and it had no effect. The second puzzle is a bit more troublesome and has to do with espeak itself. I cannot hit the gray enter key and have espeak talk anymore through the sound card without rebooting the system. For speakup, this is only supposed to be a temporary silence key, not a permanent kill key. Other than those two puzzles, I finally got archlinux up and installed using syslinux. One final piece I'd best add, I put amixer -D hw set Master 92% unmute into /etc/rc.local and it seems to work pretty well there. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- jude <jdashiel(a)shellworld.net> Adobe fiend for failing to Flash

[arch-general] Init script hidden output (careless /dev/null redirection)

Hi. A recurring source of frustration for my use of Arch Linux is that many init scripts fail to produce any output, to either the console or syslog, when something goes wrong and the script fails. The particular cause is always case-dependent (usually stemming from some config error). Some underlying programs produce no output; I'm not proposing that Arch address all such cases. Instead, the scenario I continue to run into is that the init script redirects all output, good or bad, to /dev/null. In my opinion, this is excessively heavy-handed and obscures the behavior of the system only to make debugging difficult. I also interpret this behavior to be in contrast to the Arch Way document, particularly in that it does not satisfy: "Arch Linux developers and users believe that trying to hide the complexities of a system actually results in an even more complex system, and is therefore to be avoided." I have posted bug reports about some packages (e.g., https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29769), some of which have resulted in more favorable output. However, the issue is more general, and I'm unsure whether I should continue posting such bugs. So, can anyone clarify whether there is some existing policy about this behavior? I first assumed this was a matter of limited manpower, but discussion in that backuppc bug, in particular, leads me to suspect that others in the project don't have my convictions. Thanks. ~Jacob

First, the hack to force the sound card on and to be unmuted does work. I put it into /etc/profile since that should apply to the whole system. I did manage to get dmesg output saved to a file. I'll see if I can get that copied to another place where it can be shared later. I failed to create a user account as root though I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do that with the installation disk in the drive running everything. What happened to cause the failure was that speakup died and I couldn't get it back to life just as the system said changing finger information. So I never managed to finish creating that user account. What is going on that should cause this, I do not know. When I tried mandb as root, speakup also died and I never got the root prompt back and typing the reboot command failed to speak as I typed it or to reboot the system. Failed to create secure file system message went away after I changed ro to rw in syslinux.cfg. Should /dev/sda3 have been mentioned in syslinux.cfg where I have /home? If so, I didn't do that and this may explain some of the difficulties. Finally, archlinux has to have enter hit once booted to start talking and I had adjusted timeout from 50 down to 20 earlier. The consolation prize for all of this is with each effected correction, the problems get different which since speakup still speaks sometimes and the system still boots probably points at some form of progress. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- jude <jdashiel(a)shellworld.net> Adobe fiend for failing to Flash

[arch-general] Openstack keystone

HI guys If this is beyond the scope of the list, then please accept my apologies. I am trying to install the entire OpenStack stack on Arch Linux and keep running into an issue with the keystone service. As far as I understand it, most of it is written in Python. To install the keystone service, I created a PKGBUILD file (see attachment) which seems to work fine,but the resulting applications seem to be missing a key component. The error I keep getting is 'no module named server'. I have researched this error far and wide and nothing I find actually gives me any insight into why this error keeps happening. The packages I find for Fedora and Redhat and variants on pbone.net seem to include files that mine does not have. I am really unfamiliar with Pyhon so it could be that some files are only installed when other dependencies are present. I cannot seem to find any documentation on how to build OpenStack from scratch (other than for Debian, and Redhat/Fedora). I will also ask on the OpenStack mailing list if there is one, but does anyone have any clues as to why keystone-all keeps whining about not having a module named server? Thanksn

Dear list, I'm a 47 years old trader, and the current financial crisis forces me to change my job. I am working on few business projects which involve good tech knowledges. I am not a tech guy, just a sophisticated user (proudly running an Arch box) whith tech as a hobby. I nedd to gather informtaions for the tech part of my projects and would appreciate to talk with someone involved in the web and software industry.
