I did the steps for networking setup in beginner's guide on the archlinux wiki and was told that the second network setup would make the network persistent. I noticed in the section for wireless both auto-net-wireless and auto-net-wired were mentioned but auto-net-wired was not mentioned as a daemon to add to the rc.conf file daemons line in the wired network setup instructions. [arch-general] Systemd and time synchronisation problems

Recently I changed permanently to systemd - however I have noticed that the system clock is out by some minutes just after I have booted up and see for example: [mike@lapmike3 ~]$ chronyc tracking Reference ID : 178.32.55.58 (gateway.omega.org.uk) Stratum : 3 Ref time (UTC) : Tue Sep 11 10:03:20 2012 System time : 158.888610840 seconds fast of NTP time Frequency : 5.454 ppm fast Residual freq : -1.577 ppm Skew : 13.260 ppm Root delay : 0.062475 seconds Root dispersion : 0.029119 seconds I would not mind a second or two out - but 158 seconds is not acceptable - and if I reboot then the clock is immediately out by the same amount until it eventually re-syncs after quite a long time (10s of minutes!) I thought I would check the hardware clock but : [root@lapmike3 ~]# hwclock -r hwclock: Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method. hwclock: Use the --debug option to see the details of our search for an access method. I had originally set up chrony which does eventually after some time get the system clock back in sync - I do have dumponexit in my /etc/chrony.conf but presume somewhere along the way in the transition from iniscripts there is a configuration error? I have in my /etc/adjtime: 0.000000 0 0.000000 0 UTC I am running KDE - and until the system clock is re-synced it is quite a bit off - this presumable also means that mail time stamps will be wrong until the clock resets properly - I have looked at the chrony and systemd arch wiki entries but I can't find a way to get this sorted out - can anyone help out? [arch-general] new install: files under /etc/fonts/conf.d/ not symlinks?

a couple days ago, after the problematic fontconfig update was already done, i installed a new instance of arch no a separate partitionl (via pacman -r / chroot, from my existing, updated arch instance). now i'm surprised to find that the files under /etc/fonts/conf.d/ aren't symlinks, but real files again -- and pacman doesn't complain...how comes? (this install has [testing] enabled, if that makes a difference.) -- phani.

I am learning more about my hardware doing an archlinux installation on an amd k8 athelon system. Apparently grub won't work without use of blocklists and it complains that blocklists are unreliable so cannot embed and for that reason won't install. Fortunately another boot loader other than grub is available. I'll try that one later. In case it matters, the problem I'm really trying to solve [TM] is to install a calendar server. I've selected horde because it also offers a supposedly gnupg-capable webmail server, which would be nice when I'm stuck on my tablet. Thanks!

The system is only a c.l.i. system so far since I first get the command line working then get interested in g.u.i. later maybe. I'll adjust those timeouts down to about 20. When I boot the computer with the arch hard drive in it, the system waits until I hit enter to start talking. Not a problem since it does talk but only for a few seconds then espeak turns off. If I log in very quickly, I get a root prompt. If I wait for a few seconds after that then espeak goes off again. I did save the state of the sound card with alsactl before rebooting the system too. I followed instructions for syslinux and changed the lines in syslinux.cfg to point at /sda1 rather than sda3 as is the default too which is why the system comes up as far as it now does. Does syslinux run some kind of splash screen or screen saver by default once it starts up? If so I may need to turn that off and then everything should be working correctly. If what I read in syslinux.cfg is correct users of the beginner's guide ought to be told to link or copy one of those files from /boot/lib/syslinux into the /boot/syslinux directory I didn't do that and that may be the cause for all of what is breaking now. The syslinux-update command is mentioned twice and the first time it's mentioned in the section on syslinux, it's mentioned too early since the edits to /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg need to happen before the syslinux-update command gets run unless that syslinux-update command actually needs to be run twice for some reason. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- jude <jdashiel(a)shellworld.net> Adobe fiend for failing to Flash

Hello, A few weeks ago there was a thread regarding the best "Arch" way of backing up /etc and I mentioned that I wrote a backup program that works very well for that. I promised I would let everyone know when my new version became available, and today is that day. I don't have an AUR package yet, however an installer is provided and a "Quick Setup" can be found in the README. The package contains full documentation and I am willing to answer questions via email. Guys, Guillaume, Do you know if the recent depends bump in swt is do to an actual break in compatibility with java-runtime 6.x or was it just do to a package support issue? The PKGBUILD was updated a couple of days ago to: -depends=('java-runtime>=6' 'gtk2>=2.20.1' 'libxtst') +depends=('java-runtime>=7' 'gtk2>=2.20.1' 'libxtst') I have a couple of my children's games that are still openjdk_6 based, so I was putting off the update.
