I think since Gnome 3 / pulseaudio, I've had an annoying system beep when shutting down. The pcspkr module is not loaded. I've found that I have the following device: $ dmesg | grep Beep [ 10.594164] input: HDA Digital PCBeep as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/input/input7 And that the following command will disable the beep: $ amixer -c0 set Beep 0% mute How should I go about making this persistent? I think avoiding that device would be best, can it be done by adding (or disabling) some udev config? Or, can I somehow make the 0% mute persistant in asound.conf? Thanks

I remember some time back it also worked on a arch box, only thing I was not using pppd directly but wvdial instead... OK, on machines at the internal side of my LAN, I can ping everywhere. But I can not use the browser with all addresses, for example I can't get to www.archlinux.org through frirefox or midori, neither www.debian.org. Weird thing www.google.com, and some other sites can be reached through firefox on machines inside the LAN. When I try accessing those sites on the gateway (not the machines inside the LAN) of course I have no problem. I checked /etc/resolv.con, and it's OK, besides ping has clear access everywhere. I missed to indicate this is running on a lemote mini-pc (archloong on mipsel), which of course has no official support, but I wanted to see first if I'm missing any configuration particular to arch (as I said this worked before also on a x86 arch box, but things change), so just in case perhaps someone identified the miss... Hi all! I'm having trouble installing xorg on a Gateway Netbook which has a fusion AMD processor model "C-50". It has micro+graphics in one chip. I've googled that many people succeded with catalyst drivers, though I haven't been that lucky. I added the [catalyst] repo mentioned at the arch wiki, installed all xorg, xorg-utils, catalyst, catalyst-utils, etc. but I can't start x When running startx, nothing happens. It shows the prompt again. fglrxinfo returns "unable to open display (null)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log is empty , however, the same file with .old is at http://pastebin.archlinux.fr/433086 If helps, /etc/X11/xorg.conf is at http://pastebin.archlinux.fr/433085 Removing it makes no change. Hello *, still having perl issues after update. Saw on the mailing list that I'm not the first, but the suggested workarounds don't work for me. END failed--call queue aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/GD.pm line 213. Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/GD/Graph/lines.pm line 18. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/GD/Graph/lines.pm line 18. Compilation failed in require at ./test.pl line 6. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at ./test.pl line 6. 1) adding push (@INC,"/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl"); didn't help 2) renaming vendor_perl to vendor_perl-old didn't help (was suggested in june) 3) remove perl/gd/perl-gd & reinstall didn't help neither I was hoping that a subsequent update of the packages would help, but in the meantime it's more or less 1 month that I can't execute perl programs and it's getting annoying Any hints/pointers for future investigation ? [arch-general] Alsa buffer_size without dmix?

Hello everypony, I want to increase my default alsa buffer_size of 8192 to 32768 because I'm sometimes getting small skips in my audio. Now, usually people use dmix for this. I'm using the upmix plugin, however, to listen to stereo music on my 7.1 system. Could any alsa wizards share the wisdom on how to increase the buffer_size without dmix or how to chain dmix into this? My also asound.conf: pcm.upmix71 { type upmix slave.pcm "surround71" channels 8 } pcm.!default "plug:upmix71" Now, I tried something along these lines: pcm.upmix71 { type upmix slave.pcm "buffer" channels 8 } pcm.buffer { type dmix slave { pcm "surround71" period_time 0 buffer_time 0 period_size 2028 buffer_size 32768 } } pcm.!default "plug:upmix71" but apparently I don't grok alsa configuration syntax. It doesn't help that alsa-project.org is down (which is why I'm posting here rather than on their mailing list). I don't even need dmix itself, I just want to increase the buffer size but apparently dmix is the only plugin capable of doing just that. Help appreciated. -- Sven-Hendrik

Hi all, I have created a PKGBUILD for Fedora's GRUB Legacy fork, grub-legacy-fedora-git https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47959 . It includes support for GPT boot (not tested) and supports ext4 /boot (tested using the UEFI package). It does not include any of the patches used in core/grub package. It compiles fine with the binutils in Arch repos (unlike the current core/grub and aur/grub-gfx packages). It also supports splashimage (gfx) option. Although I maintain that package, I do not use it. I use grub2-bios-bzr which I maintain). Important info :- 1. The menu config file is /boot/grub/grub.conf, not /boot/grub/menu.lst . 2. The syntax for splashimage is (for example) - splashimage (hd0,0)/boot/grub/image.xpm.gz 3. The package builds fine in x86_64 with gcc-multilib. I have not checked whether it compiles without gcc-multilib (grub2 1.99 compiles without multilib in x86_64). Would be helpful if someone confirms whether it compiles in x86_64 without multilib. I request current core/grub and aur/grub-gfx users to test this package and give your comments/suggestions. Regards. Hello, If any of you, still misses the gnome 2.32 with ffmpeg, mplayer, mencoder, dvdstyler, and all the stuff that comes with, I have setted up an archlinux server at: archlinux.k1.com.br ======================================== howto: 1) edit /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist to have only one line Server = http://archlinux.k1.com.br:81/$repo/os/x86_64 2) edit the /etc/pacman.conf and uncomment the code to fetch from community, multilib, lzt lzt is the "private" packages brought from FreeBSD 8.2 3) do the command pacman -Syu the system will bring the codes from the k1 archlinux repository 4) pacman -S abs will rebuild the /etc/abs.conf to point to the K1 abs 5) command: abs will fetch (via rsync) the abs and put it in the /var/abs ======================================= for now, there is a complete gnome 2.32 working with gdm 2.18 (the old one) that have gdmsetup. libreoffice is version 3.3.3 and the pt-br package is libreoffice-pt-BR I have tested on several old notebooks and seems OK Just in case some of you need the old gnome. Guys, Since updating to libreoffice 3.4.1-2 I get a "General Error" on opening any document and on saving any document for the first time. (i.e. save a new document or 'save as' new name on existing documents) Libre seems to work. After closing the error dialog, the document opens and after closing the error dialog on save, the document is saved, but this gives some concern when working on critical documents. That project isn't supported anymore, so I'm looking for an alternative. Something simple that can build and update a repository (with AUR packages) using a package list. Suggestions? Hi, I have a small question about ObjC ABI. (See openvpn-authldap-plugin: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=30584) This package can be built only with export OBJCFLAGS=-fobjc-abi-version=2 As I understand gcc-objc uses ABI version 0 by default, but this ABI support already dropped from libobjc. So I get "undefined reference to `objc_msgSend'" errors in default build. (like this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn-auth-ldap/+bug/771029) Is there any way to fix default gcc-objc ABI version?

Hello, I am currently working on another toy example use of pyalpm: beside pycman, the command line utility that comes with pyalpm, I have now pacweb, a browsable Web interface to pacman. http://projects.archlinux.org/users/remy/pacweb.git/ It is not suitable for public consumption, but offers an alternative display of the pacman database. Intrepid users might run it as root, to allow performing some actions (changing package install reasons, add/remove individual packages), as well as wide opening seurity breaches on their systems. It is currently based on jinja (recently added to repos for Python 3) for templating, and steals Archweb style for the current appearance. I have also made a PKGBUILD available on the AUR. The amount of actual Python source code is very small and should be easily readable. -- Rémy.

Guys, This may just be on i686, but I'm trying to figure out what happened. During update this morning, postfix refused to start. The upgrade error was: (41/46) upgrading postfix [#######################################] 100% newaliases: error while loading shared libraries: libdb-5.1.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Attempting to start postfix without the &>/dev/null gave the same error (duh..) I think when perl was upgraded to 5.14, something broke with one of its libraries. Whenever I type 'automake' or attempt to recompile several perl packages from AUR, I get the following error message: /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/List/Util/Util.so: undefined symbol: Perl_Istack_sp_ptr Thoughts anyone? I see this as a show stopper for any development right now. Thanks.

Hi, After a recent system upgrade fbsplash fails to run during boot. However while shutting down i can see the splash. Its only during the start up that I can't see it. This is the /var/log/boot some days before the upgrade http://pastebin.com/EbdYYb32 and this is the log after the upgrade http://pastebin.com/MkxLbRsT Please notice the "/etc/rc.d/functions.d/fbsplash-extras.sh: line 780: /lib/splash/cache/steps_sysinit: No such file or directory" and "/etc/rc.d/functions.d/fbsplash-extras.sh: line 795: /lib/splash/cache/steps_sysinit: No such file or directory" and "/etc/rc.d/functions.d/fbsplash-extras.sh: line 796: /lib/splash/cache/steps_bootup: No such file or directory" errors that occur during boot(after upgrade). These didn't occur before. Also after booting i did ls in the /lib/splash/cache dir and found that the files are already there in the dir. Thanks.

Hello, I am now trying netcfg for managing network connections, however I encountered some problems, and I didn't find the solution in the manual or the ArchWiki. So I wonder whether a complete documentation is available. The two problems I encountered are: 1. Ad-Hoc wireless lost ESSID. Hi all, Well, I have been trying to specify my Soundblaster Audigy ZS2 as my default sound card, but no luck. Here is what I do. I typed: cat /proc//asound/modules 0 snd_intel 1 snd_emu10k1 So I then created the alsa.conf file under /etc/modprobe.d and typed: options snd slots=snd_eme10k1x0 I know that there is something wrong here, but what am I doing wrong? Hi all, I was looking at the /lib64 folder and wondering what it is really needed for... It just seems clutter to me on a pure x86_64 system (or even with a multilib in lib32 folders like we have). As far as I can tell, most things are perfectly fine without that folder and its two symlinks. I would like some help testing removing this so I can get an idea of what issues people run into. There is bound to be some software that makes assumptions about /lib64 in its installation and I would like to know (a) how widespread that issue is and (b) how hard it is to work around. If you want to try it out, just remove the /lib64 folder (after making sure it only has symlinks to ld-2.13.so and ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 in it. Guys, This may just be on my box, but after update to thunderbird 5, all access to new messages on pop accounts broke. The error message said: Please send PASS command. It looks like the mailer wasn't responding properly to the server communications. I rebooted, I tried everything. Hi, I've got a Synaptics Touchpad capable of recognizing gestures. After using this quite heavily on Windows I got used to it and would like to have it available on Linux also ;). After some research I found that there is a Synaptics Gesture Suite for Linux ([1]), which looks quite useful. However there is no direct download available, and it seems that you have to be some sort of OEM in order to get it. I couldn't find any package in the repositories, so I'm wondering whether anyone knows more about it. Hi, Java 7 is getting released on July 28th so I thought it would be a good time to let users test it out. I have just pushed jre/jdk 7 build 147 into [community-testing] so that users can have a month in advance to report bugs, and notify upstream projects if they are incompatible with java 7. You should be able to install jre/jdk 7 without the need to enable any of the testing repos. I have tested it on my computer with a couple of browser games which seem to work fine. The only program that doesn't work with Java 7 afaik is minecraft, the specific problem can be tracked here: http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/minecraft_doesnt_work_with_java_7 Hopefully we can have enough users complaining that the devs will take notice. I'm in the situation where some of the information that I really would like to have in the pkgver/pkgrel isn't available until after the build step. Also, some information about the dependencies is clearly much easier to extract during the build process (due to the tools I have available to me). So, in short I'd like to massage the typically static values usually found in the head of the PKGBUILD as the build progresses. Hello. As you know makepkg since 3.4.0 has feature "automatically aborting on any errors during packaging". Sometimes this feature makes me cry, for example, if build() function has: rm [non-existent file] 2> /dev/null This problem is not critical if you are author of the build()'s code (you can adapt code for the capricious makepkg). But i encountered the following situation: i maintain psi-plus aur package. This project has bash library libpsibuild.sh for making (because it is a complex process). I use this library in the build() function of the PKGBUILD. If i run build() function just under the bash, program builds great, but with makepkg it falls with error. I can do patch for this library, but it is not good solution, because of this library updates literally every day. So i requesting something like boolean variable in the PKGBUILD, which can switch automatically aborting. If author preferred to disable this feature, he will take care of error handling in the code directly. As i know, gentoo portages has somesing like this.

Hello. I need to start several programs after login and after startx. Now I write these directly in my .bash_profile and .xinitrc; but I'm not satisfied with this. They cannot be easily stopped after logout. To do that I think I'd record their PID and kill them in .bash_logout, also need to take care when they're manually stopped, and all these related problems. So I think a set of scripts like the daemon managing from initscripts will be nice. But I can't write /etc/rc.d daemons, as they must be executed by a normal user. Has anyone written such a tool? Hi all, As the title of this email suggests I'm having trouble with the new Nvidia driver. I've attached my Xorg log, as I'm sure that there are a log of people who understand the ouput better than I do. I've had to revert to the previous driver (270.41.19-3) to get my system up and running again. What seems odd to me from the log is that it doesn't even try to load the nvidia driver. I'm using Xorg without any explicit configuration. My card is a GeForce 210 and I'm running a 32 bit arch. Did I forget something? Anybody have any suggestions? Regards, Pico

Hello, wpa_supplicant is supposed to provide most of the wireless_tools functionality. I have set up a branch of netcfg that replaces all uses of wireless_tools by wpa_supplicant. http://projects.archlinux.org/users/remy/netcfg.git/log/?h=no-iwconfig iwconfig is still used by the deprecated IWCONFIG option, but there is still one thing I don't really understand. In src/connections/wireless, there is block that calls "iwconfig mode Managed" before starting wpa_supplicant. The log is not really explicit about why this was added (it merely says it was necessary for iwl3945), and wpa_supplicant man page only says it's necessary for the hostap driver, which we do not use. The following features has been added since the last release: - add support for IPv6 configuration (FS#18699) - add support for static routes configuration (FS#18700) - add support for creating tun/tap interfaces (FS#15049) - add configuration file /etc/conf.d/netcfg for net-auto-wireless - add support for restricting automatic startup of profiles (FS#23169) - bridge: add support for several brctl options (FS#16625) - wireless: add support for explicit BSSID (FS#24582) - wireless: add support for ad-hoc connections (FS#19683) - wireless: no longer require wireless_tools to work - use /run instead of /var/run - drops hard dependency on net-tools package - drops hard dependency on wireless_tools package Most importantly: - netcfg no longer puts no files in /run (dhcpcd still puts files there) - netcfg only depends on iproute2 and dhcpcd : wpa_supplicant is optional (required for wireless), wpa_actiond, ifplugd are required for net-auto* scripts - net-tools, wireless_tools are needed if you use legacy options IFOPTS and IWCONFIG, but this is strongly discouraged - /etc/conf.d/netcfg is a new configuration file, currently only used by net-auto-wireless: it is used to configure the name of the wireless interface you want to use (also possible in /etc/rc.conf, but discouraged), and to configure a list of preferred networks you want wpa_actiond to manage (FS#23169) - IPv6 is supported: no address configuration (even auto-configuration) will be done unless you say IP6=something in your profile. I am having this weird problem. Whenever I run pacman -Syu or pacman -Su it asks me to replace lib32-libgl with lib32-catalyst-utils. I just read about the changes to module blacklisting[1] and I'm left wondering: 1. As I read it, it's only blacklisting that's affected, is that correct? So MODULES in rc.conf can in the future only be used to load modules at boot-up. (Is there even a way to configure modprobe to load modules on boot?) 2. When does this change take effect? Guys When installing packages into an archroot with the '-I' option to makechrootpkg is there any way to also pass the '--noconfirm' option to pacman? I have tried a couple of different ways to pass it after the -I option, but so far it is a no go. TeXLive 2011 is in pre-testing phase. Experimental builds of texlive-bin will be found in http://pkgbuild.com/~remy/texlive-experimental/ Current issues are: - no install script for texlive-bin where it should run "mktexlsr" and "fmtutil-sys --all" - dangling symlinks, due to new scripts appearing in texlive-* - segfaulting luatex, so I guess I'll keep with compiling it separately - no biblatex-biber. TeXLive only provide a binary that bundles Perl + all dependencies. I plan to adopt biblatex-biber from AUR for that and add it as an optional dependency of texlive-core. However, it comes with a very unusual set of dependencies. We can only blame François for being a great Perl enthusiast. Once upstream seems stable (they say ConTeXt is currently broken), and the PKGBUILDs reach a final form, packages will hit [testing]. Regards, -- Rémy.

LiveCD beats this any day for me -- i rarely install anything these days because my distro-hopping abruptly ended with Arch :-) (though i do check them out from time to time, or for work related things) -------------------------------------------------- and the end of the day people just want to reinstate a useable system as rapidly as possible. we can yammer on and argue that the user "should not be using testing then", "should be making full backups", "should have/know an alternate recovery plan", "should be manually backing up kernel related stuff", "should be awesomely l33t with linux by now", "prob shouldnt use Arch then" or limitless other assertions, none of which will help anyone learn anything. i can recover my system. i can recover it pretty much no matter how fubificated it is in only a couple minutes because my life is centered around these systems -- to others, if not most, the system is merely a conduit to their own needs/interests, not the focal point. this is important to remember. i think some basic recovery options are a fair request, and one i've seen often enough in various places. if their needs can be made possible by a simple externalized mechanism, and then implemented + maintained by the community, then who is losing? if you don't want it you can simply not use it and your system is no better or worse. in fact, it's not even affected to any degree save some extra checks failing here and there ... you may even find your own use for the triggers. such a mechanism could be used to save packages, save module tree, save images, or anything else one wanted it to do at that critical point. in my own case, i need a way to save the kernel and initramfs before they are replaced -- automatically -- so i can stuff them into a btrfs subvolume for system rollbacks ... i would never ask the user to perform this manually for a million good reasons. the only other option AFAICS is aliasing over the top of pacman. so, while i personally don't care about the threads specific request -- as it will never apply to me -- IMO the motivation is sound, and could be generalized. i propose this threads energy move away from the endlessly debatable focus on "versioning the kernel" to "providing a means to perform custom actions during kernel package transactions, and potentially any package" ... something that maybe everyone can agree on, and something that may prove to enable many new/interesting ideas. so, what sayeth anyone that can make the magic come to life, or anyone else? /etc/pacman/hooks.d/kernel26/<hookname> /etc/pacman/hooks.d/hook.kernel26.<hookname> /etc/kernel26.hook /etc/pacman.linux.hook <whatever> ill be looking into the pacman hooks proposal, but since i cant do C [yet :-] no patches will be from this guy ... external hooks to the .install file is probably pretty simple to implemented even in pacman (then any package could be hooked), but could easily be done in the .install file itself for certain packages, eg. kernel26. I would really like to the kernel that is being replaced kept as a backup. If the latest kernel breaks your hardware, or something else goes wrong, I'd like to have the option of using the kernel that was just replaced, because it's known to work. I wouldn't want more than one old version of the kernel, though. Also, although the -lts kernel is good for this, it isn't intended to solve this problem, and isn't always a perfect fit. For instance, my new laptop has UEFI-related issues that are only being addressed in the *very* latest kernels. I'm not sure -lts would boot for me, but I know that my *current* kernel boots; seems a pity to throw it out it straight away on upgrade, before I can test that the new kernel boots OK... With the recent deprecation of net-tools I did notice some changes: - The binary 'hostname' now accepts remarkably few options, specifically 'hostname -d' no longer works. - The command 'dnsdomainname' disappeared. (I'm not really sure why I ended up using it though, since 'hostname -d' would have worked just as well.) I have read FS#24647 already, so I'm aware that some of this is being worked on. Since net-tools are going to be abandoned (I was wondering how i "misuninstalled" the package), what do i use as an alternative to ifconfig? I use wicd or manually bring LAN up, and it occurred to me network interfaces failed due to missing ifconfig command. What is the new one? Hello, Recently mpd has stopped working. It doesn't start up at boot and when i run "rc.d start mpd" I get this error /etc/rc.d/mpd: line 6: 24502 Aborted /usr/bin/mpd /etc/mpd.conf &>/dev/null. I am using gnome3(if thats somehow causing the problem.) I believe its due to some ALSA pulseaudio mixup but I am not sure. A recent announcement said: * The adjustment of the hwclock for drift is moved into a daemon that should not be used in most scenarios as it can lead to subtle bugs (especially if using dual-boot or ntp). If you know what you are doing and want to adjust the hardware clock for drift, add `"hwclock"` to your `DAEMONS` array. I use openntpd, and with hwclock disabled - DAEMONS=(!hwclock ...) - I've been getting these errors every reboot: "Superblock last mount time is in the future (by less than a day, probably due to the hardware clock being incorrectly set) - fixed" Perhaps openntpd does not set the hwclock. Therefore, should openntpd be used in conjuction with the hwclock daemon?

I'm enthuasistic user of Arch and Linux in general and I'd like to help this project by improving or creating some stuff. I'd like to implement some driver or port of app. I know C, assembly and some scripting languages. Yes, I know there is the pacman package signing feature missing, but I do not consider it work for one person and I would rather work on something like userspace tools needed for kernel (e.g. filesystem tools, etc.). i have dolphin installed and using it in awesome WM, it doesn't see services that are not turned on. I tried to do both full/minimal kde install, accessing dolphin settings from kde, still the same it looks like this http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/7612434/2011-06-07-063524_533x451_scrot.png… if i try to download new services, nothing happens to after install. Anyone knows what could be wrong?

Hi all, Since the next kernel will be 3.0 , the kernel26 naming is meaningless from the next kernel. I think this is also a good time to consider implementing versioned kernel install. Agreed arch has a policy of 1 package per software in the official repos. While this attitude is acceptable for Xorg or windows managers or even some low level utilities, problems with those can be corrected if the system can boot to a shell atleast (init 1 or 3). But if the kernel fails to boot and under the assumption that the user hdoes not have any rescue system/distro handy he/she cannot boot into the system (atleast not at that moment). Without a working kernel it is not possible to boot to a shell to run any damn command. While this topic has already been discussed at [1] the discussion was slow and has not lead to any fruitful result. This post is mainly to reach out to a larger audience and decide on how to go about since the upsteam version change provides the right time for Arch to reconsider the same. Another discussion at [2] is about removing the word kernel from the initramfs image. If in case versioned kernel proposal is accepted then the initramfs also (automatically) becomes versioned to match the kernel. Atleast Dave Reisner (falconindy) took the first step by making the change in his geninit program. I understand this might require changes in the way mkinitcpio (or geninit if at all it becomes default) and the way pacman handles different versions of same packages. Please join in. [arch-general] After the recent linux kernel update booting fails if usb disks are present in /etc/fstab

Hi, After the last kernel update (I guess) I cannot boot my system if a external usb disk is present in /etc/fstab. I use default fstab mount options for the disks and they have each a single 1GB ext4 partition. Note that the disk mount okay when mounted from the command line after booting. Two identical disks has been tested with the same result so is not a hardware problem. The disks tested are two Western digital 1TB Essential Edition 2.0 (Model: wd10000h1u). In fact this problem was happening very seldom before (1 every 100 reboots) due to to the waking up time of the devices but now it is every boot (only once worked). My question is: Has any thing changed regarding the usb at boot time lately in the kernel? In fact, I have notice a considerable speed up in the booting sequence up to the point where the file system checking is done. Maybe the changes to speed up the booting process have something to do with the problem I'm having? In my case it looks like nothing is been asked to my external drives when checking the filesystems at boot. Just after, the system fails claiming that it has not found the disks. In the past (two days ago), some activity in ligths and spining up sound was present when the system was checking the filesystems, but now everything is quiet. It is anybody else having the same problem? In the meanwhile, as I do not use this disk for booting I have add the nofail option to the fstab for the two disks. Now obviously everything works but the drives are not mounted. Does anybody know the best place to add the mount commands for the drives so they are always accessible for the users after boot? I use the following line to get my current external IP in conky. Recently Its been hanging for ages before responding, so I tried it out and it seems to try an ipv6 address first before timing out and succeeding on the ipv4 address. I know I can just disable ipv6, but since on June 8th (AFAICR) there's gonna be a large scale test of that on the interwebz, probably a good thing to keep around. Any suggestions what the problem could be? [arch-general] x terminals refresh issue with latest kernels

I have already reported this problem in kernels' sign-off threads, but still have no solution... With kernels 2.6.38 or 2.6.39 xterm and rxvt do not update the content properly. E.g. I enter "ps -ef" command and see only the first 2 lines at the top and empty space below. In some cases the new command output does not appear at all, I see just the previous command result. The terminal blinks every 6-7 seconds, and for very short time I can see the proper content. As soon as the terminal loses the focus (mouse cursor moved, alt-tab, workspace change) it shows the proper content. However it never happens with roxterm, but it is a gtk-based program. I'm running x86_64 Archlinux on ThinkPad R61 with Intel GM965, xserver 1.10.2. I've tried the recent xf86-video-intel driver from git - no difference at all. Any ideas, please? Thanks, Sergey

Hello, The current installer images are from 05.2010 which is over a year old. I was unable to install Arch on my new laptop using this installer due to insufficient hardware support in kernel 2.6.33. Are there any plans to update it? Regards, JM

Guys, I don't know if I am remembering correctly, but I thought the upgrade "Targets" were sorted alphabetically by name prior to the pacman upgrade a month or two ago. Now, it looks like they are listed either by repository, then alphabetized or some other logic that ends up -- almost alphabetized. In the past, I would scan the list to make sure there were no updates that I didn't want or that I needed to put off due to bugs or what not. Now I've been bitten a time or two by searching through long Target lists and confirming there were no unwanted updates only to find out that an unwanted update was alphabetized higher-up or lower in the target list. Has the target list always sorted by repo, then by name --or-- was the list fully sorted by name earlier? If so, is it easy to change? In short lists, it's not really a big deal, but when you have over 100 targets, having them sorted by name really helps. What say the pacman gurus? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hello, I'm building a computer cluster with about 20 nodes, all of them running ArchLinux. One of them is the 'login' node connected to the Internet, other nodes share Internet connection via the login node being a router. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_Share Now, when I update the system (pacman -Syu) or install package on all node, I think it's a bad idea because it will consume the mirror bandwidth proportional to the number of the nodes. Maybe it's not a big issue for 20 nodes, but I'd like to learn nevertheless for future use, that: Is there a way to cache the pacman transaction at the login node, so that the communication between the login node and the mirror is constant, and the rest of communications only take place within the LAN? Is seting up a pacman mirror at the login node is the correct solution? Best, Takayuki Muranushi

does anyone else experience <title>? i've been getting this for sometime -- on intel, nouveau, and radeon KMS drivers -- and it looks terrible. after the module loads within initramfs, the space *within* the old resolution is pure white, surrounded by normal black. i'm pretty sure the "whitebox" corresponds to the size of the previous resolution because it's different sizes on all my machines, and pretty small on my 1920x1280 laptop (@ 15.5in ... awesome :-) anyways, long story short it turns back 2 black when written over (systemd/initscripts output) or cleared, so: echo -en '\e[H\e[2J' ... takes care of it. i basically just did a `clear > out`, looked at the codes, and made a small initramfs hook from the above. it works fine as is, but is anyone else seeing this? it annoys me because i don't run getty on tty1, so it's there forever unless i clear right away. not really a big deal, as it took longer to write this msg than fix it, but it started happening a few kernels ago IIRC and i'm wondering if we can just throw something like this into mkinitcpio (if `quiet`, or before output), because it looks terrible :-( i'll open a report unless someone feels like throwing it in there, it's a pretty simple change. -- C Anthony

I have not mentioned this here for a while, but I am a big fan of seeing what the Arch community is developing, and in the past I have gotten some real interest from the Arch community on this front. I just released Salt 0.8.8, salt is an application used for very fast remote management of systems via zeromq. Salt allows you to manage large groups of servers from a master server with simple commands, and salt also contains functionality for configuration management. Salt is meant to fill the roles of applications like puppet, mcollective, func, cgengine, fabric, Capistrano and many others. I've search flyspray for any bug reports about this and didn't find any. Should these two files be deleted on shutdown or should they not be created on boot? Hi there, There are rumors that the next version number of the Linux Kernel is going to be 3.0. Since we choosed 'kernel26' as the package name, we will have to modify it anyway. Why not just 'linux 3.0'? Just an idea.. since we have the fellow project 'Arch Hurd' providing 'hurd' as an alternative different kernel already. Best, Bernardo

Hi list, I upgraded kdelibs, kdeworkspace, kdeedu and networkmanagement plasmoid yesterday (except for the last one, it was just a package upgrade) and after that the kde cookies service is not working anymore (neither for konqueror nor for rekonq). System tray now has the old colorful icons, instead of the 4.6 white and minimalist ones (that's not an really an issue, it's just weird), and everytime I try to enable the networkmanagement plasmoid the whole plasma crashes and reboots without the plasmoid enabled. I've noticed more weird things in its behaviour, but I don't remember it now, so if it happens again I'll say it here. Has anybody the same problem? Does anybody know what this package upgrade was supposed to do? -- Álvaro Villalba Navarro

There is a light modification to be added in every single language package script. Hi, I am using archlinux with gnome 3. I am trying hard to change my icon theme to human but it just doesnt change. ~/.gtkrc-2.0 http://pastie.org/1983860 and ~/.gtkrc.mine http://pastie.org/1983863. I tried lxappearance too. After I click on apply and close it gnome kinda restarts and when i open nautilus it shows no change. I had tango icon theme so i deleted that dir from /usr/share/icons. Now it has switched to the default gnome icon theme. How do i change it to Human icon theme? also when i run pcmanfm i get the following output in terminal ** (pcmanfm:3532): DEBUG: unable to load icon . Tobias, Thomas, all, After update to 2.6.38-7.1 I am experiencing a dmraid failure. It also affects the LTS kernel. The Fallback image boots fine. The failure produces the following error (retyped from RAMFS console): boot messages: Activating dmraid arrays... no block devices found Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/nvidia_baaccajap5 Root device '/dev/mapper/nvidia_baaccajap5' doesn't exist attempting to create it. Error: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/mapper/nvidia_baaccajap5' In the past, Thomas has mentioned: <quote> This might just be a timing problem: dmraid -ay might be called before /dev/sd* is fully set up and detected - we had these problems in the past already. The 'sleep' hook put after the udev hook can work around that. </quote> I'll give the sleep hook a go and report back. Hi all, the first beta of the new major release of KDE 4.7 is out and is already packaged in [kde-unstable]. As you already know KDE is (slowly) moving to GIT; with this transition some KDE module has been splitted into subprojects, others modules will be splitted during this beta cycle and others modules will be splitted before KDE 4.8. The result of this is that some package (e.g. kdegraphics-libs) is now splitted in several packages and each conflicts with the old, so you have to remove it when pacman asks for its removal during the update. See the KDE announcement[1] for upstream changes. Hi, I wanted to ask what's happening with current kernel in testing? I can get it from testing repositories for about two days, but haven't seen a sign-off thread yet. The reason I'm asking is that I wanted to say NOsignoff for me on i686. The boot process gets stuck at 'loading modules' before stage 3. Tried - fallback - the same. Hello, I'm new to this mailing list, but my name's Kerrick Staley. I'm fairly new to the Arch community: I've used Arch for 2.5 years now. I would like to spearhead an effort to finish the implementation of signed packages in Arch that Allan has gone to the effort to start. I've only been working on the issue for about 4 days now and don't have much to show yet, but I'm sending this message out to stop the bickering as well as to query for interested developers who would be willing to help me (no background knowledge required, just strong coding skills, patience, and dedication). Please reply to this message if you are interested. It seems there are a lot of users who would like this feature and can contribute, but are prevented by a lack of documentation and technical knowledge, so I will create plenty of documentation regarding the issue and what needs doing. I should warn that I'm a rather inexperienced programmer in the broad scale of things and am unfamiliar with pacman's source code, so I ask that developers on the pacman-dev mailing list have extra patience when I ask questions. I'm sure that even just the cessation of angry signing-related inquiries to this list will be reward enough for your help as I implement this feature. I would like this feature to be in active use in 3 months, 2 if possible. Since a working system will require cooperation and understanding from all developers, the human aspects of this project may prove more difficult than the actual coding, therefore ***I ask that all Developers and Trusted Users stay tuned to this list and read future information I will give regarding system configuration and key management.*** I might be busy this weekend, but I should have some things started within a couple of days. Hi all, On my workstation I have LXC (linux containers) setup and postfix rc.d script does not work on the host. I think reason for this is the way it gets the PID of the master process: PID=$(pidof -o %PPID /usr/lib/postfix/master) On my host this value is: pidof -o %PPID /usr/lib/postfix/master 29187 27623 881 As you can see it catches all master processes running in all LXC containers! Needless to say rc.d script doesn't work. Whats the idea behind using pidof? Storing the PID in /var/run is not an option? -- Milos Negovanovic milos.negovanovic(a)gmail.com

Hi folks, I've run into a weird problem with monitoring the status of my laptop battery. Since I assume I'm doing something wrong, I thought I'd ask for feedback here first before going and filing a bug report. Here goes: When my machine boots, /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0 and all the files in it do not exist: $ ls /sys/class/power_supply AC Since my battery monitor uses this as the source of information, it obviously fails. Now, as soon as I query the state of the battery through /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0, the missing files under /sys/class/power_supply get created: $ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: discharging present rate: 1265 mA remaining capacity: 4234 mAh present voltage: 11340 mV $ ls /sys/class/power_supply AC BAT0 This is not just a timeout issue. If I don't query /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state, /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0 does not get created even after a few hours of uptime. Also, after suspending, the files remain present but cannot be read. Querying the battery through the /proc interface once again brings everything back to normal. Now what's funny about this is that I read online that the /proc/acpi/battery interface is deprecated and that the /sys/... interface should be used instead. Yet, without querying the former, the latter doesn't even exist. Did anybody run into similar issues? Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this "the proper way"? (My workaround right now is to include "cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state > /dev/null" in rc.local, but that's obviously a hack.) Thanks for any pointers you may give. I have it installed (1.1.31-1)and there is indeed a file named "/opt/dropbox/dropbox", but the daemon seems not to find it: ~/ dropboxd /usr/bin/dropboxd: line 10: /opt/dropbox/dropbox: No such file or directory That's only me or other people had this bug too? Thomas, if you simply surf to http://is.gd/Tn8wBO,and omit the last four packages (because they do not begin with "archtrack"), you will have your list with links. Evangelos, the reason for the deletion is that I'm refactoring my approach and these packages are no longer needed. They really just psuedo-packages anyway. Btw, why is it that package maintainers can't just delete their own packages?

Jesse Jara told me to compile the git version of ... "You could try to build the git version of mesa and intel driver. And see if it works. You may want to stip the mesa-git PKGBUILD to pnöy build intel parts, if you dont have a more powerfull desktop pc. " but yaourt hangs with some dependency. Hello, can anyone think of a reason the rc.d scripts are added to kdm, gdm and slim? They are not recommended by anyone & they are to be blame for occasional weird problems. The standard and IMO only way is to start them from inittab. They dont come from upstream & i dont know when they were added, i remember them being there ever since i started using Arch, they may come from CRUX or something. I am considering requesting them removal from all display managers. In [0] Pierre said some people want to keep them for backwards compatibility. Backwards compatibility is desired only when something works correctly. Thoughts? In preparation of LibO 3.4 release my i686 build crash always at the same point. It seems to me to be a bug in our linker package. No other distribution seems to run into this, upstream has no clue so far. So I'm asking here for help. The stuff is in trunk. Hi list, I'm changing computer, Asus A600 to a Thinkpad T60. My configuration on the Asus is an internal IDE magnetic drive and an external SATA SSD drive. The system boot from the SSD and hold the /, /home partitions. The internal IDE disk holds the /op, /var and an 3rd partition mounted somewhere else, not really important. The T60 contains an internal SATA bay. So I swaped disks, putting the SATA SSD drive inside and using the IDE disk as external. The boot menu show up, boot, but kind of fails recognising the drives, with errors like : Unhandled sense code. Still the right number of partition is recognised and and the GPT seems to work as /dev/disk/by-uuid show the right symlinks to the partitions. I launched gdisk sda which tells me no GPT but MBR yes do you want to convert your MBR to GPT....I'm not going this way. So the GPT seems broken here. I put back the disk in my Asus and it all work perfectly again. Do you know a way I could fix that? Thank you Laurent

Hi, Since I updated my kernel to 2.6.36 and 2.6.37, /proc/net/nf_conntrack and conntrack -L do NOT show "packets" and "bytes" even for ASSURED / REPLIED connections. It seems that both of these data (bytes and packets) have disappeared from conntrack/netfilter. Am I missing something? Is there an option somewhere to restore earlier behavior (previous kernels/netfilter would always display both bytes and packets)? [arch-general] Cannot Find Desktop in GNOME3

After upgrading my box to GNOME 3 last week, I can't seem to find the desktop anywhere on my gnome setup. I use the keyboard exclusively for navigating around so I would normally use Ctrl+Alt+d to open the desktop for keyboard focus. Alas I cannot do that any more. Also, with prior versions of Gnome, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Tab would toggle you through the Bottom Panel, Top Panel, and the Desktop. Now it only toggles between the top and bottom panels. Has the desktop, as we know it, gone away? At the moment, I am using fallback mode because gnome-shell is completely broken as far as screen reader accessibility is concerned. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated; thanks.

HI there! I'm trying to update PCSX2 with some help of its dev team [1], but it is crashing all the time. According to 'gdb' output, it is somehow related to lib32-glibc, but it is omitting some information. [arch-general] Gnome 3, a bug?

This is such a basic issue that I refuse to believe I'm the first to bump into this behaviour. Hence I ask here first for some help. I recently upgraded to Gnome3 and switching between windows with alt+tab is rather broken for me. Here's why I say that: 1. I make sure I have two non-overlapping windows on the screen at the same time. 2. I position the mouse pointer in one of the window. 3. At this point I can't switch focus to the other window with alt+tab. Basically I have two options: 1. Move the mouse pointer so that it's not in any window, then I can use alt+tab. 2. Move the mouse to switch focus. Neither of these is very convenient. I have browsed through all High and Medium severity bugreports and categorized some of them here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Fijam . 'Candidates for closing' are divided into two categories: strong and weak. Strong candidates have not been replied to in over 4 months (with some bugs seeing no activity for over a year) with the last comment asking for more information or confirmation whether the bug still persists. I have not yet started issuing closure requests but will do so in two weeks if noone replies to those reports. Weak candidates have not been replied to in less than four months, the resolution of the bug was unclear or the original submitter found another solution and failed to provide any more information. I will wait for another month before issuing closure requests. Note: jelle van der waa (jelly) asked for confirmation on many of those bugs and deserves all the praise. I have also identified some bugs where more input or a confirmation of a fix is needed and asked for it. Will try to do initial triaging on those bugs or mark them as candidates for closing if the submitter fails to respond. There was also a couple of bug reports that seemed to be going nowhere. There was either a failure in communication, unresolved argument, a patch with no feedback from the developers or a request to split a bug into two or more specific reports. These should probably be reviewed again. There are still Low and Very Low severity bugs to go through, so perhaps some other user wants to pick up where I left :) Cheers, JM

Do this: 1. Set up krb5.conf to enable proxiable and forwardable tickets 2. Set up ~/.ssh/config to enable "GSSAPIAuthentication" and "GSSAPIDelegateCredentials" 3. Use "kinit" from this krb5 package to get a new TGT 4. Use the ssh client from this openssh rebuild to connect to a server that support GSSAPI auth On some, but not all, ssh server implementations, GSSAPI auth will fail, and it will fall back to password auth. The server will log this: sshd[3822]: Forcing password authentication because no credentials delegated When using the heimdal-based builds, GSSAPI auth would work in all cases. It's entirely likely that only very old ssh servers show this problem, as that's what I'm seeing so far. Possibly there is some confusion with the new "Okay as delegate" ticket flag, which heimdal didn't support at all, and MIT krb5 only supports enough to parse and report, but has no support for setting. I don't consider this important enough to block the release of these packages, but I wanted to mention it in case someone else cares more than me.

I can understand that the applet will no longer works with GNOME3, but that package included more stuff like: - An standalone application, without any need of use gnome-panel - A console client Is there any chance to create a new package that includes those applications? Hi, I would like to report a bug and thus I followed the procedure for registering on the Arch Linux Bugtracker. However, I haven't received any confirmation code (e-mail) after about a day. Can it be that this takes such a long time? Re-registering doesn't work, it says the username is already taken. On the other hand, when trying to use the lost password retrieval, it tells me the user does not exist. Thank you for your help. Steven

I might have discovered a bug with this new /sbin/rc thing. If I run "/etc/rc.d/httpd start", Apache starts just fine. Yet if I do "rc start httpd" it fails with: :: Starting Apache Web Server [BUSY] (13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs [FAIL] So, bug?

Hi, I want to run devilspie to add opacity to windows of particular apps. But i can't get it to work. I can't even run the example script from arch wiki article [1]. I've tried it under twm and dwm; both don't work. I run "devilspie -d -a" command, to set it to debug mode, then I get: Devil's Pie 0.22 starting... Loading /etc/devilspie Loading /etc/devilspie/example.ds Loading /home/maciejjo/.devilspie Loading /home/maciejjo/.devilspie/opacity.ds 2 s-expressions loaded. But I think it should report something when I open and close windows, and it does not. Can someone reproduce this issue? OK, performed a pacman -Syu today, and all sorts of things broke. Can anyone please help point me to fixes? * My USB (wireless) keyboard no longer works under X. (Although it still works fine from consoles 1-6.) * Internal trackpad no longer works under X. * Connecting to an openvpn no longer works under networkmanager/networkmanager-openvpn/nm-applet. * Neither USB (wireless) keyboard or (wired) mouse works under qingy. I've been trying to dig through the forums, but haven't found any helpful info yet. If these are known issues, could anyone point me to relevant forum threads and/or bug reports about them? I honestly don't know where to start to fix this on my own. There were ~150 packages that got upgraded this weekend, and I have no idea which one(s) caused the breakages. Thanks, DR

Hi, guys. Have some troubles with dmenu(4.2.1-1), stock kernel(2.6.38.4-1) and perhaps xf86-video-ati(6.14.1-1): dmenu lags. Vertical listing is really pain in the ass(latency ~1 sec) and with blob everything works just fine. If anyone has the same here i'll post it to suckless's or x.org's bugzilla. Hi, I recently installed the dev tools for GNOME development and wondered why devhelp displayed no documentation for GTK3. Apparently there is no gtk3-docs package. Is it intented to not have that package (which makes no sense as there is the gtk2-docs package)? Now that GNOME 3 moved to [extra] it would be great to have the docs at hand. Thanks.

Hello, I just wanted to remove and install again some pkg because something screwed.. I run $ sudo pacman -Rd pm-utils checking dependencies... error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: upower: requires pm-utils AFAIK this was the point of -d (--nodeps) to remove the files without whining about dependencies? Some guy troubleshooted this error by deleting a file in his home directory, but that file seems to be created when running Blender for the first time. It's running on i386 atom with poulsbo driver PSB working well (to say something... it's a crappy video card and even crappier for linux, not even mention for blender). I suspect it's not related to some step missing in installation, as when installing Blender on a decent desktop PC it works at once. (AMD64 architecture with ATI videocard and catalyst driver). To my surprise, when first trying kub. 11.04 and before I could configure the video driver, blender did start! When adding the ppa:PSB or similar the system couldn't start again. So I think the problem is related to some missconfiguration in the PSB. My xorg.conf: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "psb" Option "ShadowFB" "true" Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768_75.00" EndSubSection EndSection Any clue will be apretiated. Hi, I want to install driver for my Brother DCP-J315W printer. I've downloaded driver files from brother's site, since there is no package, neither in repo nor in aur. It was in deb format, also rpm available. The driver is split into two packages: dcpj315wlpr and dcpj315wcupswrapper. I converted them to tar.gz archive with deb2targz, extracted and I don't know where to put the files to get the driver working. Hierarchy in cupswrapper: /usr/local/Brother/Printer/dcpj315w/cupswrapper/, and there are brcupsconfpt1 brdcpj315w.ppd cupswrapperdcpj315w files. In lpr there is /usr/local/Brother/Printer/dcpj315w/lpd/ where are brdcpj315wfilter filterdcpj315w psconvertij2, and /usr/local/Brother/Printer/dcpj315w/inf/ where are brdcpj315wfunc brio08ba.bcm brio08bc.bcm brio08bf.bcm brio08bk.bcm paperinfij2 brdcpj315wrc brio08bb.bcm brio08be.bcm brio08bg.bcm ImagingArea setupPrintcapij and also usr/bin with brprintconf_dcpj315w. Should I put them in these directories in my system? maciejjo

Guys, Looking at the postfix tutorial wiki, it looks like the dovecot/spamassassin information is out of date. Not being that familiar with each, I didn't want to drop a note flagging it until somebody else had looked, but the dovecot config information looked like the old dovecot-1 config. Can somebody familiar with dovecot and spamassassin drop by the page a check whether the information there is still good info? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Postfix_Tutorial I was looking for the spamassassin information in particular. I have spamassassin set up with dovecot and postfix and I have been training it, but it doesn't seem like it is flagging any spam? I am using an old setup to filter mail through spamassassin with postfix main.cf: mailbox_command = /usr/bin/procmail -a "$EXTENSION" and then a .procmailrc file in $HOME, but looking at the logs, it doesn't look like anything has been filtered in months.
