Because of the limited amount of writes a cell can handle, you typically want the data on your SSD not to change very much over time. Since its greater reading speed can improve on the starting time of larger applications, it is (in my understanding) recommended for an SSD to contain mostly applications and/or system files. [arch-general] consolekit removal - a question

For people who have converted to systemd it seems that consolekit is no longer needed. When removing it should one do "pacman -R consolekit" or "pacman -Rs consolekit" - I was unsure whether the dependencies should also be removed or not? Thanks -- mike c

[arch-general] Sticky keys and gaming

Hello all, I don't play very often but when I do, I get sticky keys. By sticky keys I mean that after about half an hour playing, when I stop pressing, say, ‘w’, the character continues walking forward. I first noticed that playing Minecraft and thought the issue was related to Java. A quick search [0,1] supported that theory. However yesterday I was playing Counter Strike 1.6 on wine and, after a while, I noticed I'd continue walking forward even after I'd stopped pressing ‘w’, so I thought I'd drop an email here and see if anybody else has had that kind of issue. I had this problem running both Fluxbox and i3. I think that's not related, but I run setxkbmap us intl every time I go to either window manager. Hi :) I'm using GDM and Xfce. It isn't a surprise that I can't log in anymore. If I should replace GDM and for sure Network Manager too and reconfigure ntcfg. Will there still be other serious issues if I stay with initscripts? Is there a Wiki describing how to switch to systemd easy? Regards, Ralf

Good day, I just got a new laptop with a 25Gb ssd and I was wondering which would be best if putting my home directory (minus music and videos) there or and arch install (minus pacman pkg cache). I read the ssd related article in the wiki and even though it mentions some optimizations and considerations it doesn't mention anything regarding this issue. Thanks

[arch-general] net-tools: Deprecated?

Hi, I've just upgraded GNOME to version 3.6 and realized that net-tools was pulled in as a requirement for the new version of networkmanager. Now I'm wondering what the current status of "net-tools" is, because according to [1] it is deprecated and I was perfectly fine without it ;). I'm not familiar with the requirements for networkmanager, so basically my question comes down to this: What is net-tools needed for and is there a way to abandon this requirement? What are the plans for the future? Thanks in advance. Furthermore I would like to thank all of you making GNOME 3.6 available for us. Probably a lot of work has gone into this, so thanks again! Hello guys, this is my first message to this list. I'm trying to install PyQT for Python 2.7 on Archlinux. I installed the following packages > pyqt 4.9.5-3 > pyqt-common 4.9.5-3 > pyqt3 3.18.1-11 > python2-pyqt 4.9.5-3 When I try to do "import qt", the following message appears > Traceback (most recent call last): > File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> > RuntimeError: the sip module implements API v9.0 but the qt module requires API v8.1 I have the following sip-related packages installed on my system > python-sip 4.14-2 > python2-sip 4.14-2 > sip 4.14-2 Any help will be appreciated. [arch-general] Strange network problem

Hello all, I've got a strange problem with a machine that had a fresh install three weeks ago. Nothing new has been installed on it since then. About one time in four, after that machine has been booted, a ssh to it (on a LAN) fails with 'no route to host'. Using ip link and ip addr on it shows everything is OK, it's not a NIC that gets the wrong name or so. The network on that machine is set up using netcfg, in the recommended way (/etc/conf.d/netcfg). Rebooting has solved the problem in all cases. Any hints as to what is going wrong ? TIA, -- FA A world of exhaustive, reliable metadata would be an utopia. Hi, The systemd wiki article says: "Note: Adding your user to groups (optical, audio, scanner, ...) is not necessary with systemd. It might even break the wanted functionality if you do so." What are the the technical reasons for group membership breaking functionality when using systemd? -- Dave.
