[arch-general] i686 extra repo - busted?

I'm guessing something is wrong with the extra repo on i686! Did Allan break it? [arch-general] Understanding permissions

Hi, I'm using lighttpd as http server, and it complains about permissions when I ask for a file on my public_html directory. Using strace on lighty I get: stat("/home/mauricio/public_html", 0x7fffceb2dcb0) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) However, using ls: ls -ld public_html public_html/index.html drwxr-xr-x 3 mauricio users 4096 2009-04-13 19:41 public_html -rw-r--r-- 1 mauricio users 4075 2009-04-13 19:41 public_html/index.html Since 'r' is there in all users field, should not every user, including 'http' used by lighty, be able to read? [arch-general] network WTF

Got a bit of network weirdness going on here. 2 different Arch laptops, an old one and a new one, with completely different hardware (and also i686 vs. x86_64), but both are completely up to date with the latest repos. On the old (i686) one, "iwlist scan" works fine from the command line, as a non-root user. On the new one, no dice - I need to be root to get back results. What makes this even more annoying is that apparently some of the wireless tools I'm using suffer from this restriction as well. So on the old laptop, kwifimanager and knemo show accurate info about the current connection (bit rate, link quality, etc.) while on the new laptop these come up empty. Anyone have any idea what's causing this and/or how to work around it? Surely I don't need to run kwifimanager and knemo as root to do it. I'm guessing there's some obscure setting that's different between the 2 machines that's controlling this, but I have no clue what it could be. TIA, DR

[arch-general] Surviving without X

Hi, Do you think it's possible to live without X, replacing framebuffer for it, using packages available for arch? I imagine something like DirectFB or similar, using it when text is not enough. I think I could do with a browser and a pdf viewer, but I wasn't able to find a direction to follow to get that. Has any of you tried it already? Thanks, Maurício

Anyone been able to build knetworkmanager since the upgrade of networkmanager to v0.7? It doesn't seem to build for me anymore: ... [arch-general] Problems rebuilding kernel with alsa 1.0.19

My sound module's (snd-hda-intel) been broken in ALSA for a while now. Was working around the problem by keeping myself on kernel 2.6.27, but finally gave that up this week (for various reasons) and now I'm without sound again. Tried using OSS instead, but that didn't work either (no headphone support for my codec), so I'm now trying to rebuild the kernel with ALSA 1.0.19 support, since that version of ALSA is supposed to fix the problem. (The current kernel apparently uses version 1.0.18a.) Not having much luck though. I followed instructions on the ALSA wiki build page on how to copy the ALSA source onto the kernel source before building, but the build is failing when it hits the sound modules: ... [arch-general] latest xorg- significant slowdown

Hi all Upon updating to the latest xorg/nvidia (Xfce), and rebooting, X seems to take about 4 times as long to start, and programs seem to take about 2-3 times as long to start up. Anyone else having similar issues? Not really sure how to run any metrics on this, but X is now significantly slower, including noticeable delays in switching between apps/windows.. I can even tell that weechat in urxvt is slower. -Jon

Hi! I have been experiencing slowdowns with the (new) xf86-video-intel driver (everything else updated). I had to move to xf86-video-intel-legacy driver because with this one I can play 1080p movies and enable desktop effects in KDE and play flash games and videos... which I couldn't with the newest driver. So xf86-video-intel is still buggy, I own a Thinkpad x61 with an Intel x3100 video card. How can I help in seeing what is the problem (logfiles, recompile with debug options, etc.)?
