[arch-general] Setting global environment variable

I'm regularly connecting and disconnecting to a VPN using vpnc. The network I connect to has a transparent proxy which I want to set $http_proxy to. I thought I could do something like export http_proxy="proxy.whatever.com" in the /etc/rc.d/vpnc file, in the start and stop functions as necessary but exporting only makes the variable available to the child processes. Not to mention, I need this variable set for normal users also. Basically, I want to set and unset the variable when I connect and disconnect the VPN. Any ideas?

Guys, I have several good collections of miscellaneous kde themes, kdm/gdm themes, metacity, gtk-2, xcursors, etc.. that I would like to find how best to contribute them to the community. The color-schemes, gnome and kde layout are original and the are available from gnome-look, kde-look, etc. (all GPL), but given all the 3rd party redirection that those sites put you through to find any given file, it is almost not worth downloading them anymore one-at-a-time (same applies to many of the other 'now commercialized' sites). If this is something that you guys may be interested in, my main question is I don't know whether it would be better to put them together as several AUR package, ABS package or whether Arch has a place for this type of stuff. I generally just make them available on my server at 3111skyline.com, but I'm limited to 384k upstream so putting a bunch of material out for community wide download can result in logjams. The idea here is to just make it convenient for Arch users to have a convenient couple of packages to install to get a good cross-section of some of the better desktop packages themes, cursors, etc.. that are a real pain to go search for, find and download separately. Arch devs, is this something that you guys would be interested in? If so, what do you think is the best way to do it? There is probably no more than 50M total. [arch-general] Vertical Quicklaunch on the Desktop in KDE4 - It's a Winner

Guys, The far right-hand sliver of the screen is rarely covered on my desktop. Using the quicklaunch widget turns it into a very useful launch area without placing an entire 'toolbar' on the edge by using the 'quicklaunch' widget. Using the quicklaunch, you can put ~20 of your favorite apps in a very convenient location without losing desktop real estate. See: (42k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/kde4/vertical-quicklaunch.jpg Initially the quicklaunch widget orients itself in a horizontal configuration. Simply using the resize handle, you can resize it into a vertical configuration. Right after resize, the whole quicklaunch will look like a mess due to a bug that changes the size of the icons to 128px as the widget is resized vertically. Just click on the preferences access button and set the size back to 16 and you are good to go. (while you are there also increase the maximum number of visible apps to ~30 or so) To populate quicklaunch, just right-click the quicklaunch on the icon above where you want your app located and navigate to the .desktop file for the app you want to add and click OK. The .desktop files are usually located at: /usr/share/applications /opt/kde(3)/share/applications/kde (adjust as required) /usr/share/applications/kde4 To rearrange the application order, just drag the icons where you want them in the quicklaunch. [arch-general] Arch Linux and security - it needs some work

I really like Arch. I switched about a year ago after being a Debian user for nine years. There is something that troubles me though about Arch. Its lack of security focus. By this I mean there is no consistent way that security issues are dealt with. There was a proposal for 'The Arch Linux Security Team' but it seems to have fallen by the wayside[1]. I propose to resurrect this in the spirit of Arch's users becoming contributors. I, hopefully not alone wish to draw up a list of processes that can be used to create a dedicated Arch Linux security team that can deal quickly and efficiently with security alerts. It would need to be able to liaise successfully with Arch developers and hopefully over time security team members can become trusted users. I'm mentioning it now as I notice that an Arch Conference is being organised in Canada. One of my proposals (shamefully stolen from Debian) would be to have key-signing parties at Arch Linux meet-ups. This could then be used to create an Arch Linux web of trust. So basically I'm going to get my ideas into writing and post them on this list. I hope others will be willing to come forward and contribute too.
