Looks like Aptana-Studio is much newer than Aptana with fewer votes, and was created initially instead of ophraning Aptana. Therefore, I propose Aptana-Studio to be deleted. I apologize if I'm doing something wrong, I'm uncomfortable with mailing lists. I submitted an AUR pkgbuild for python2-oggconvert, but it is no longer necessary since the oggconvert maintainer updated to account for the python upgrade. I couldn't find any information on the AUR site or the arch wiki on how to remove a package I've uploaded, but yugrotavele suggested the best way would be to subscribe to this mailing list then send an email to everyone asking for someone else to delete the package. Will someone please kill that package for me? Hi! My name is Lukas Fleischer, I'm a 20-year-old student from Germany, studying Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart, freelance web-developper, IT consultant and hobbyist DJ. I've been using GNU/Linux for about three years (used OpenBSD and FreeBSD before) and Arch Linux probably for about two years. Since then, Arch Linux has become my Desktop distribution of choice being installed and used on four of my workstations and one server (i686 as well as x86_64, one box using [testing] and [community-testing] repos). Besides Arch Linux, I'm still using Debian, Gentoo and *BSD as server distributions/OS. I'm a hardcore CLI user (zsh, tmux, mutt, irssi, mplayer, calcurse just rock!), experienced programmer (10+ years) specialized in Perl, C and Assembly and, as I already said, web-developper (PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL). As I read about Loui looking for help with the AUR multiple times on aur-dev, I thought I'd just give a try and apply for TU. My main interests would be to help out with AUR development (just check some of the patches I sent to aur-dev) and AUR cleanups (you might e.g. want to have a look at aurdupes [1] and some of my mails to aur-general), double-check popular AUR packages, and, of course, to maintain a couple of packages in [community] including remuco, redshift, tinyproxy, mixxx (I'd also like to see xwax in [community] but sadly, it's not really popular), pytyle, optionally surf and tabbed and maybe some of the OpenSync stuff (I'm still trying to get it work with calcurse and my Symbian phone). I currently maintain 22 packages in the AUR [2] and previously maintained some other packages that have been moved to [community] (e.g. perl-datetime-format-iso8601, perl-task-weaken, winetricks). You might also want to check my "archlinux-packages" GIT repository [3] which is (almost) always up-to-date. If you check some of the PKGBUILDs you might notice that I care about consistency and conformity with standards (although not all of the packages might stick to that, especially virtualbox_bin still looks kinda ugly and contains some legacy stuff). I'd really appreciate any kind of positive criticism and improvement suggestions as regards that! Well, if there are any questions left, feel free to ask. I just noticed that libreoffice-new has been uploaded. Contrary to the last post in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105664 the old libreoffice in the AUR has not yet (to my searching) been deleted (I think its been reuploaded). Obviously, its exactly the same. I wonder what the point is of having libreoffice-new though. It's basically just extracting of some rpms, as compared to the libreoffice from [testing]. I propose that libreoffice[1] and libreoffice-new[2] be deleted. The author should reupload as libreoffice-bin. If a TU agrees, I volunteer to email the author. Hi folks, There's currently a very out of date openjdk development version package here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14671 It's also currently orphaned and doesn't build any more. However, there's quite a lot of information in there and though it would probably normally be deleted for being very out of date, orphaned and no longer building on a current system, I don't want to delete it due to the work that's obviously gone into it. This would probably have to be redone if and when someone wanted an openjdk development package. It should be probably renamed openjdk-dev and given some love... does anyone who knows more about building Java fancy taking it under their wing? Otherwise, I suppose that we can just leave it orphaned for such a time as someone does... Cheers, Pete.

Please remove the following packages: bibletime-kde4 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=21617 bibletime-i18n http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15503 bibletime-kde4 is not necessary any longer because the maintainer has adopted and updated bibletime (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=1740) which was orphaned and in former times contained a quite old KDE3-version (see package comments). bibletime-i18n is orphaned, too, and flagged out-of-date, and also refers to the old KDE3-version. Hi, As Gens (which contains i386 asm code) is now compilable on x86_64 thanks to multilib packages, I wrote updated PKGBUILDs for gens and gens-gs (a fork of gens). However, many entries in the AUR provide Gens but are somewhat dead or abandoned. So, here are my requests : - first, gens-opengl, gens-mythgame-opengl, gens-cvs, bin32-gens should be deleted. Theirs sources are unreachable and OpenGL support is integrated in gens-gs. - secondly, I would like to adopt gens-gs. Its maintainer did not answer to our multiple requests for updating the sources URL. On the other end, the maintainer of gens still seems active, so I'll try to contact him. - finally, if I adopt and update gens-gs, bin32-gens-gs becomes useless. Hello, I've recently joined this list and thought I should introduce myself. I'm a linux sysadmin for a fairly large hosting company and have been using linux for around eight years now. I've been running Arch for a little over a year and it's quickly become my distro of choice. The AUR is an exceptional resource and I've decided to contribute some of my time towards maintaining some packages. I've picked up an orphan; rng-tools and updated it to the latest version. It's my first attempt at writing a PKGBUILD, any comments/suggestions would be welcome. I'm also looking at updating the meanwhile library, it looks to have been out of date for some years now. I've been working on an alternate PKGBUILD for speech dispatcher where it would run as a system wide service by default. In doing this, I created a user, speechd and a group, a11y so I could keep the speech environment secure through the unix domain socket. So far, it seems to be looking and working pretty good. Anyway, I don't know how numeric IDs are assigned to users and groups - especially those intended to be used by system daemons like mysql or postgreql. I have postgresql on my box and it does this same kind of thing with user and group creation. Do you know what values I should be using so I don't conflict with other potential packages? If you want an example of what I'm talking about, see the PKGBUILD script for postgreql it creates a user and group on the fly as needed. I plan to do the same with my project. Hi, the AUR package ttf-ubuntu-beta [1] is outdated and replaced by the packages mentioned below. I'd remove it. ttf-ubuntu-family-fonts [2] and ttf-ubuntu-font-family [3] provide the new ubuntu font. The former package uses a package name not complying with the source filename. Further on it uses strange version numbers and it is built using a source archive from font.ubuntu.com, but uses only the precompiled ttf-files. Therefore the download 2.3MB instead of 0.7MB seems unnecessary. Please consider deletion of ttf-ubuntu-beta [1] and ttf-ubuntu-family-fonts [2]. Hello, Since python 2.7 in testing is now /usr/bin/python2 but not /usr/bin/python, most AUR packages using python should be changed to use /usr/bin/python2 and depend on python2 instead of python unless they use Python 3. I adopted it however there is no non-vcs source release so I can't convert into a stable package. I set the new package ( http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41506 ) to replace "n2n svn-2". Hi, While moving the python rebuilds I noticed the following packages have issues: - cgmail - gammu - mathomatic The all have commits in community-staging and some of them had entires in the db but not a package in sight. I'm not sure what happened there but someone needs to clean this up (rebuild and upload to community-testing should be fine). While I am at it, everybody make sure they upload packages using devtools. If you do not, we end up with really strange commits in the repos (e.g. repos/community - note the lack of arch) and this causes issues with ABS. I am getting really annoyed with cleaning these up so I will start naming the people who do not use the official tools for interacting with the repos and maybe blocking access if it keeps up... If I understood this correctly, the line should read: provides=("perl-datetime=$(printf "%.4f %s\n" ${pkgver})") For the other two: _ghcver=`pacman -Q ghc | cut -d\ -f 2 | cut -f 1 -d -` depends=("ghc=${_ghcver}" 'libx11') Again, I don't know why go through the trouble of checking a local package that may not exist on all systems (Sergej?). Better "hardcode" the numbers and be done with it.

The renowned shooter game 'epiar' actually has a new version with lower version numbers. (current 0.4.1 is newer than 0.5) The build system of the original source archive is partially broken. However I managed to make up a environment that runs. 1) forgive the original build() function, use sh autogen.sh && ./configure --prefix=/usr && make || return 1 2) because the Lua library comes with it doesn't honour DESTDIR, and the fact that we don't need it since already have one. comment out the entire "install:" block for Source/Lua/Makefile 3) the original 'make install' is broken because it only installs the binary. actually the 'Resource' directory is also needed. 4) make a wrapper script to run the game. -- Li Ian-Xue http://b4283.ath.cx

It's his only package, created in Aug 2007 and never updated. The PKGBUILD misses dependencies, uses the wrong license, installs into hardcoded ruby 1.8 directories, etc. I'd like to adopt it, I have a working package ready which includes a patch for ruby 1.9.x. python-numeric is old, replaced by python-numpy and has had issues on x86_64 since python-2.5. These issues are far more noticeable in python-2.7 (as in python-numeric just does not work...), so I intend to drop this package from the repos. Two packages in [community] depend on it: freevo, gogh. When python-numeric gets dropped, so will these packages unless their maintainers (or someone else) do something about it. If they're removed, maybe we should add a 'replaces' entry in cairo and lib32-cairo. (request to arch-dev-general?) Besides, I wonder if libxft-lcd (in community) and its 32-bit counterpart in AUR are still useful, since I get LCD filtering with bare libxft, the only needed package from AUR was fontconfig-lcd. The correctest one according to the specified dependencies IMHO is ocamlgraph-withoutfindlib [2], which also has the minimal code for building the package. What do you think? As the email suggests, I am JerichoKru, the same one that sparked Det's...interesting conversation that took place here. Though I'd rather let that die off and get to the actual issue. chromium-beta has been giving me issue after issue. Because of this, I have not uploaded it yet. 1.) I had figured that 6.0.496.0 would be the beta because it is the latest of the v6's and the v7's are the in dev tree. Det listed what is now the latest stable as the beta...which is obviously not right. 2.) This version apparently doesn't need/incompatible with the gyp patch listed. It stated that the patch was filled with "garbage". 3.) Skipping the patch causes a build error farther down in the compile process. Unfortunately, I forgot to save the output. I'll try again tomorrow as it is 11PM in my timezone. Any input for this would be helpful. As for clamav, it is updated and should work (it worked on my machine, anyway). On a somewhat related note: I had typed a rather long response to Det's...rant but, I tried to sent it with my other email and thus didn't get posted. When thinking about it, that reply would have just fed to the fire. ----- ...for some reason claws-mail can't send emails with hotmail...

Just paddled through 'kernel26' search results in AUR and obsolete/delete results with google and here's what I found (there's a lot more left, though) - all this stuff is left by people asking for the removal of the package in either the comment section or the pkgdesc, unaware of the AUR Mailing List or the IRC channel. Hello, network-ups-tools is long orphaned and since the version bump I did in spring we have an open ticket[1] not one of us could fix. I asked Roman who once maintained it, but he said he could not "provide any useful opinion here". So from my point of view, we can't do something about it, no one of us uses this software so it's better to give it to the AUR where people with the hardware can do something about it. None of the rebuilds for [community] has been completed, as I was waiting for community-staging. I have built some of them locally but they are not up in any of the servers or reflected in svn. Hi all, I'd like to hear your opinion on the naming of the AUR packages [1] of the QTScrobbler application [2]. The oldest package is "qtscrob" referring to the URL of the sourceforge page and the source code archive name. Although the name of the application stated on the homepage is "QTScrobbler". When I wanted to install the application in March 2010, I searched for "qtscrobbler" on AUR and obviously didn't find the package "qtscrob". Therefore I packaged myself and submitted the packages "qtscrobbler" and "qtscrobbler-cli". When I noticed the duplication I wrote a removal request to the mailing list [3], which was forgotten after a short discussion. (I submitted "qtscrob-cli" as a copy of "qtscrobbler-cli" for conformance having the removal of qtscrobbler* in mind.) The current situation is of course dissatisfying. I'd like to know whether the application name should be preferred over the short name. I don't mind about the maintainership of the packages. Hi folks, After the recent discussions about the number of TUs, the size of [community] etc., I have decided to apply to be a Trusted User myself. Chris Brannon has kindly agreed to sponsor me. So, here's my application. ..oO----Oo.. Who am I? I'm 30 and I live in Birmingham in the UK. I'm a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, in the School of Computer Science. I also teach programming there (Java mainly). When I'm not on the computer, I'm into hiking, photography, growing my own veg, making home-brew beer and that sort of thing. I've been a day-to-day GNU/Linux user since around 1998, when I got hold of a SuSE magazine cover CD and installed it on (IIRC) my AMD K6 machine. I used SuSE, Debian, *buntu and Gentoo for day to day stuff, before finding Arch about two years ago. I also spent a while learning about how Linux systems are put together going through the Linux From Scratch book and all that. I have to say that (and I know this is preaching to the choir but) Arch impressed me immediately and still does. When I found it, I had just spent a few weeks trying to understand the Debian packaging manual and had given up being able to learn how to do what I wanted (which was basically Linux From Scratch but with a way to manage updates). I can only describe the transition to Arch as feeling like my computer was working for me again, rather than against me (or worse, me for it)! I now use Arch on my laptop for everyday work - mainly scientific simulations and writing research papers. I also run another couple of boxes (one mainly for gaming, the other runs mythtv) as well as an Arch VPS at Linode, which handles my mail, web and other hosting needs. I was the first person (I think) to use Arch in our department at the university, and since then I've helped another half a dozen or so people make the switch. We run a "Linux Install Day" each year for the new students, and while most of them seem to want Ubuntu (because they've heard of it), I try to get hold of the ones that are more interested in understanding what's going on and spend a bit of time with them setting up Arch. They are always really appreciative and it's cool then watching them demonstrating their uber1337ness to the other students. It's actually becoming quite well appreciated as a distro in the department as a whole. Anyway... I do a lot of coding and have mainly used Java, C, C++ and PHP. I've also done a bit of Python and Ruby. Unfortunately not much of my code gets into open source projects, but I can usually find my way around unfamilar code bases pretty well and so have no trouble adding the odd patch here and there to fix things and make them work. I think this would be a useful skill when packaging things for Arch. I should point out that I'm in no way a black-belt at Bash, but I can certainly put together shell scripts for the things I need, and just tend to learn stuff as and when I need it. I aim to learn more of the ninja shell scripting stuff through being a TU, to be honest. ..oO----Oo.. Why do I want to be a TU? Well, you see there are all these really helpful people making Arch so great. And I've benefited from all that. So, I figure it's time I contribute something back. (Ask not what your distro can do for you, but what you can do for your distro... or something.) It also seems to me that there should be more TUs (without compromising quality, of course). I know that statistics aren't everything, but these made me stop and think: Packages in unsupported: 24406 Trusted Users: 22 (There have actually been over 66 new packages in the AUR in the last week.) Even with the best and most dedicated TUs in the world, and lots of help from ordinary users, I don't think that that kind of number of people can keep the AUR wheels greased, let alone maintain [community] too. I think it's a credit to the current and previous TUs that the AUR is the great thing that it is (and let's be honest, it's a big attraction of Arch). More TUs putting more effort into fewer packages each (preferably that they use) must be better than fewer TUs trying to have oversight of lots that they don't use much. As Chris rightly pointed out to me, people tend to care more about things that they use. Actually, by being a TU I also hope to learn more about what goes into making something like Arch so great, as well as improving my own skills. ..oO----Oo.. So what would I do as a TU? Well, mainly three things: 1) Maintain popular packages well and reliably. I currently maintain 7 packages in the AUR, and am interested particularly in things relating to science and research (e.g. latex, octave, sage, bibliographic management stuff like mendeley and kbib), as well as KDE things (I've been building and using KDE since version 1.0). And while I think it's ideal when people maintain things that they use themselves, this wouldn't restrict me from taking on other packages that I don't use. See my current packages here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?SeB=m&K=petelewis 2) Promote Arch and the TU scheme. As I said, I think we need more TUs, while maintaining our high standard. I'd like to promote the TU scheme and get more skilled Arch users to take on maintaining the packages that they use. I think a world where more people maintain a small number of packages each in [community] will lead to a bigger and higher quality [community] repo. We should advertise, with the aim of having many more TUs. This also means that we shouldn't be afraid of voting people down if they're not yet ready, and give feedback to help them improve and invite them to apply again later. We all benefit from this. 3) Maintain / improve processes and package standards. I think that standard processes and packages are very important, and can make life using Arch a lot easier. It's also important that the processes are right, and this means attention to detail. Things like package naming and categories fall into this. I think a large part of the job of a TU is to keep the AUR clean and clear, and I would spend time helping to achieve this. I have in mind that bits of additional functionality, such as to enabling deletion requests to be handled through the web interface, perhaps duplicate flagging and package renaming would be useful and make the job of a TU easier. Over time, I would investigate implementing things like this. Also on processes, I'm a bit of a geek for democratic stuff, constitutions and bye-laws and things. I've worked with a couple of quite large democratic organisations on their election and decision-making rules and would be interested in helping to keep these working well for the good of Arch and us all too. Again, it's important to get the rules right, but in addition to hard rules, often establishing good etiquette is just as important (but IMO preferably without going down the Ubuntu route of canned responses). I think Arch people are good at this kind of thing, but I think it always helps to have people who are interested in keeping things fresh. [aur-general] The Arch Way

Hi, I have just adopted the package xmind (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22394) because the former maintainer disowned it, and I am not shure which is the best way to build the package. There are three possibilities: 1) Building from source 2) Building from the "Portable" zip-file (see http://www.xmind.net/downloads/) 3) Building from the deb-files provided for Debian/Ubuntu (see http://www.xmind.net/downloads/) ad 1) This is what you would usually do, but according to http://groups.google.com/group/xmind-dev/browse_thread/thread/d68d0c8f30b4b… the eclipse ide would be a prerequisite, so that would need a very large download if you do not already have installed eclipse (nearly 170 MB for eclipse plus 10 MB for the xmind source code!) ad 2) This was the way the former maintainer went. Download size: 75 MB The portable zip-file contains both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions, so the PKGBUILD just had to copy the right files. ad 3) When I proposed (a year ago) to use the deb-files instead in order to have smaller downloads (each of them, 32-bit and the 64-bit has appr. 36 MB), the maintainer told me that this would be ugly and "not the Arch way", that he would not do such a thing. When I told him that I did not get the point of it, since the zip file equally just installed ready-built binaries, he did not respond to it. I still think that using the deb-files would - in this special case - be the best option. But of course I would never dare to deviate from "the Arch way" (since it is the way to world domination, as we all know ;-)). What do you think? Christoph

[aur-general] New repositories (community-staging, multilib-testing)

The TU server now has a staging repository, this has been requested due to the big python rebuild. All rebuilds that are made for the staging repository should be put into community-staging now. multilib now has a testing repository, in case we need it (especially useful when testing has a new toolchain). Last but not least, the adjust-permissions cronjob has been disabled on both servers - should you mess with the db file directly (which you really shouldn't), never forget to restore the right permissions.

I found hlint at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23099 going through the orphaned packages, so I went to check the homepage of the software at http://hackage.haskell.org/package/hlint and the author lists package haskell-hlint at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34172 Both of them were created by the Arch Haskell team it says at top. "haskell-hlint" is up-to-date, while hlint isn't the differences are mainly that haskell-lint has more dependencies listed and builds/installs and does additional manual install of scripts than "hlint" . So probably hlint should be deleted. Thanks

[aur-general] Why is aur.archlinux.org so slow? :(

Whenever I try uploading a reasonably large package to aur.archlinux.org, my average speed is around 500KB/s. This appears to be an artificial limitation since a server would have at least 10/10MBits uplink. I therefore request the speed limit to be disabled in order to be able to upload large packages with all available bandwidth to increase productivity. Or is there a reason for the limit? -- Sven-Hendrik

[aur-general] ruby-gtk2 and friends

I adopted ruby-gtk2, ruby-atk, ruby-gdkpixbuf2, ruby-glib2, and ruby-pango in the AUR recently to update the package and fix some issues with it. If I remember correctly, these packages used to be in community and were recently removed. Was there a good reason for this, or was it just a matter of not caring to maintain it anymore? As these are very popular packages, I would like to move them to community (if nobody objects of course). Thanks, Brad

Hi guys, Since I am moving and I was doing my builds on my office through pkgbuild.com server (which is down from far 2 weeks) I've tried to do the rebuilds at my new home and my 3g phone connection. Of course, hdspa have their limitants and I can't upload or download quick or without issues in most of cases. I am getting a new connection from home, but they will install it until end of this September :/. What is the best way to resolve conflicting files in aur packages? I've run into this issue a couple times recently, first of all with "panda3d-cvs" and "cuda-toolkit" both contained the file /usr/bin/bin2c The result was the panda3d-cvs maintainer just removed the file since he said it wasn't doing anything anyway. Now I've run into a similar problem but this time the maintainer fixed it a different way and it broke my package. opencl-headers http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35367 has 3 files which are also provided by nvidia-utils So now to fix it the maintainer of opencl-headers has added conflicts=(nvidia-utils) to his package. But my problem is that I recently made a package (luxrays-hg) which depends=('nvidia-utils') and also makedepends=('opencl-headers') So my package (luxrays-hg) will no longer install because 2 of its decencies (opencl-headers & nvidia-utils) are in conflict. I installed the x86_64 version of Arch, and I was looking at the wiki on running 32-bit apps in a 64-bit environment which seems what the multilib project/repo does. Though If I try and do pacman -S gcc-multilib gcc-libs-multilib binutils-multilib libtool-multilib lib32-glibc. Pacman gives me that binutils and binutils-multilib conflict. Do I let multilib's version replace it? Mainly I want to build i686/x86_64 packages and make sure they work fine on both architectures as well, maybe with running a few 32-bit only applications if I come across them. Thanks

[aur-general] Question about patches in [community]

Hi everyone, I have a few popular packages I would be interested in moving to and maintaining in [community]. However, I recall reading somewhere that AUR software that includes a patch is typically not accepted in community until the upstream developers fix/merge the patches into the software and release it. Hi, I found a flashplugin package for x86_64 this morning that seemed more up-to-date than the last one maintained in community. But by the time I installed it, it disappeared from AUR. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=32539 I didn't see any deletion request on the list. Has any TU taken the initiative to delete it? BTW also vdpau [http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24337] has been replaced by extra/libvdpau, you should remove it. Thank you
