It has been altered from the original text to incorporate Xynes idea of adding the 'last maintainer activity rule. Sorry for making you guys vote twice. This marks the beginning of the discussion period. --------------------------------------------- Hi TUs, recently I had a look at the AUR db to see if we could do some mass cleanups (see my mail at aur-general [1]). ------------------------------ Orphan candidates ------------------------------ Packages which are marked 'out of date' but the last package action (submission or modification) AND the maintainers last action (across all of his packages) are before January 1st, 2009. So, Out of date = TRUE AND Last package action < 20090101 AND Last maintainer action < 20090101 http://pastebin.com/e5qJxBUs (335 packages in the most recent DB dump - results may vary a little when querying the actual db) Valid objections in reply to [1] (and any other related threads) would be excluded. Hi aur-general, my name is Kaiting Chen and Xyne has decided to sponsor me for my TU application. I'm twenty one years old and a senior at Duke University studying Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Economics. I have also been a web developer and systems administrator for about four years now and am currently working on a rather long and protracted project for the university. I have been using Linux on a daily basis for about seven years now starting with Red Hat Linux, then Debian, Gentoo and finally Arch Linux for the last three years. And I use C, C++, x86 ASM, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, and Javascript on a daily basis. I have Arch installed on four servers in total as well as on one virtual machine. I'm not ashamed to admit that I run a Windows 7 notebook as my only physical computer; though it's only role these days is to not bother me while I SSH into my Linux machines. I maintain a small cluster running Arch where I hand out free shell accounts to anyone who wants them. Currently this cluster has one hundred and twenty five users though I am in the process of updating its infrastructure to (hopefully) scale up to a couple thousand. The most important services on this cluster are/were glusterfs, nfs, ntpd, httpd, vsftpd, postfix, dovecot, postgresql, ejabberd, slapd, openvpn, memcached, pvpgn (this list is being updated quite often). I currently maintain thirty packages in the AUR, most of which I do not use but would be unhappy in seeing them orphaned. I would like to become a Trusted User simply because I would like to maintain packages more effectively. Recently there's been a thread on aur-general about the possible removal of hundreds of packages from [community] which makes me very worried. Packages such as cacti, courier-*, ejabberd, freeradius*, ipsec-tools, monit, roundcubemail, scilab, and *ircd are very important to people who run Arch on the server such as myself. This list evinces a fundamental problem however that there is simply not enough manpower to maintain the current repositories. Because I am able (or hopefully will be deemed so by the powers that be/grant TU priveleges) I would like to help alleviate this condition. Arch allows me to focus on the work that I do; it should be obvious that helping to ensure that Arch functions smoothly and efficiently is a necessary task for anyone who has made this distribution a valuable part of their workflow. In more concrete terms of how I want to contribute, I would like to start by adopting python-openbabel, freeimage, metakit, gen2shp, tdl, python-bsddb, and other orphaned packages in [community] once I have the chance to take a closer look at the orphan list. I'd also like to pull smalltalk, burp, bti, liboauth, and vim-align into [community]. I would also like to work on bringing some of the packages in [community] up to date such as rsyslog, pyinotify, openntpd, and ngspice. I would also like to work on maintain the Arch web presence. I think that a separate login is needed for each part of the site is something that should be fixed. The AUR is also somewhat outdated and I in large part agree with the page here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_2. That's about all I can think of for now. [aur-general] determining inverse AUR dependencies of binary packages

Hi all, I'll start this discussion with an example of the problem. I notice that python-sqlalchemy is about to change in [community]. Most of the packages which depend on it will need to change their dependency to python2-sqlalchemy. This is handled quite nicely for packages in the binary repositories. If you do a package search on www.archlinux.org, you'll see which packages require python-sqlalchemy. Likewise, it is easy to get a list of [unsupported] packages which require a given package from [unsupported]. However, I don't know of a way to get a list of [unsupported] packages which require a given package from the binary repositories. If it were possible to build such lists, we could contact maintainers of [unsupported] packages, in order to inform them of upcoming changes which require their attention. -- Chris

Hello all, I had created four packages on AUR; chromium-browser-inspector-bin, chromium-browser-l10n-bin and chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra-bin since the versions I found depended on only the dev channel Chromium package, and then chromium-browser-beta-bin to give these packages one to depend on. I've since learned that this isn't the way it should be done, so I'm requesting that a TU delete these four packages and I'll go to the maintainers of the existing packages to ask for beta channel packages. Recently github switched over to using SSL for their entire website [1]. Currently wget does not accept the wildcard *.github.com in the certificate: $ wget http://github.com/ --2010-11-06 15:45:12-- http://github.com/ Resolving github.com... 207.97.227.239 Connecting to github.com|207.97.227.239|:80... connected. ERROR: certificate common name `*.github.com' doesn't match requested host name `github.com'. To connect to github.com insecurely, use `--no-check-certificate'. This can be solved/worked around by passing --no-check-certificate to wget, something that makepkg does by default (DLAGENTS in /etc/makepkg.conf) _only_ for sources with the protocol https://. It does not do this for http sources, and of course does not know about any redirects to https. So my question is, what is the recommended course of action here, updating all PKGBUILDs that grab from github to point to the https source? Or is it wget's problem and we should just wait for an update? It has been fixed in wget's git repo but not released yet [2]. FYI: This is known to the github people, and they consider it wget's issue [3]. Hello, guys. Google Talk Plugin for GMail is not working anymore for me (and others...) because it relies on libssl.so.0.9.8. But for my surprise, the binary GoogletalkPlugin is a 32 bits executable, even for the 64 bits package. It comes right after the original deb package, provided by Google. To make things short, I tried to "downgrade" the lib32-openssl PKGBUILD to version 0,9,8n. It compiles fine, but the resulting libraries (libcrypto.so.0.9.8 and libssl.so.0.9,8) are ELF64, when they should be ELF32. You can view the PKGBUILD in http://pastebin.com/04xsippr So, should I need a 32 bits chroot for that? Shouldn't the multilib compiler be enough? -- A: Because it obfuscates the reading. I apologize if I'm doing something wrong, I'm uncomfortable with mailing lists. I submitted an AUR pkgbuild for python2-oggconvert, but it is no longer necessary since the oggconvert maintainer updated to account for the python upgrade. I couldn't find any information on the AUR site or the arch wiki on how to remove a package I've uploaded, but yugrotavele suggested the best way would be to subscribe to this mailing list then send an email to everyone asking for someone else to delete the package. Will someone please kill that package for me? Hi! My name is Lukas Fleischer, I'm a 20-year-old student from Germany, studying Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart, freelance web-developper, IT consultant and hobbyist DJ. I've been using GNU/Linux for about three years (used OpenBSD and FreeBSD before) and Arch Linux probably for about two years. Since then, Arch Linux has become my Desktop distribution of choice being installed and used on four of my workstations and one server (i686 as well as x86_64, one box using [testing] and [community-testing] repos). Besides Arch Linux, I'm still using Debian, Gentoo and *BSD as server distributions/OS. I'm a hardcore CLI user (zsh, tmux, mutt, irssi, mplayer, calcurse just rock!), experienced programmer (10+ years) specialized in Perl, C and Assembly and, as I already said, web-developper (PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL). As I read about Loui looking for help with the AUR multiple times on aur-dev, I thought I'd just give a try and apply for TU. My main interests would be to help out with AUR development (just check some of the patches I sent to aur-dev) and AUR cleanups (you might e.g. want to have a look at aurdupes [1] and some of my mails to aur-general), double-check popular AUR packages, and, of course, to maintain a couple of packages in [community] including remuco, redshift, tinyproxy, mixxx (I'd also like to see xwax in [community] but sadly, it's not really popular), pytyle, optionally surf and tabbed and maybe some of the OpenSync stuff (I'm still trying to get it work with calcurse and my Symbian phone). I currently maintain 22 packages in the AUR [2] and previously maintained some other packages that have been moved to [community] (e.g. perl-datetime-format-iso8601, perl-task-weaken, winetricks). You might also want to check my "archlinux-packages" GIT repository [3] which is (almost) always up-to-date. If you check some of the PKGBUILDs you might notice that I care about consistency and conformity with standards (although not all of the packages might stick to that, especially virtualbox_bin still looks kinda ugly and contains some legacy stuff). I'd really appreciate any kind of positive criticism and improvement suggestions as regards that! Well, if there are any questions left, feel free to ask. I just noticed that libreoffice-new has been uploaded. Contrary to the last post in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105664 the old libreoffice in the AUR has not yet (to my searching) been deleted (I think its been reuploaded). Obviously, its exactly the same. I wonder what the point is of having libreoffice-new though. It's basically just extracting of some rpms, as compared to the libreoffice from [testing]. I propose that libreoffice[1] and libreoffice-new[2] be deleted. The author should reupload as libreoffice-bin. If a TU agrees, I volunteer to email the author. Hi folks, There's currently a very out of date openjdk development version package here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14671 It's also currently orphaned and doesn't build any more. However, there's quite a lot of information in there and though it would probably normally be deleted for being very out of date, orphaned and no longer building on a current system, I don't want to delete it due to the work that's obviously gone into it. This would probably have to be redone if and when someone wanted an openjdk development package. It should be probably renamed openjdk-dev and given some love... does anyone who knows more about building Java fancy taking it under their wing? Otherwise, I suppose that we can just leave it orphaned for such a time as someone does... Cheers, Pete.

Hi, As Gens (which contains i386 asm code) is now compilable on x86_64 thanks to multilib packages, I wrote updated PKGBUILDs for gens and gens-gs (a fork of gens). However, many entries in the AUR provide Gens but are somewhat dead or abandoned. So, here are my requests : - first, gens-opengl, gens-mythgame-opengl, gens-cvs, bin32-gens should be deleted. Theirs sources are unreachable and OpenGL support is integrated in gens-gs. - secondly, I would like to adopt gens-gs. Its maintainer did not answer to our multiple requests for updating the sources URL. On the other end, the maintainer of gens still seems active, so I'll try to contact him. - finally, if I adopt and update gens-gs, bin32-gens-gs becomes useless. I've been working on an alternate PKGBUILD for speech dispatcher where it would run as a system wide service by default. In doing this, I created a user, speechd and a group, a11y so I could keep the speech environment secure through the unix domain socket. So far, it seems to be looking and working pretty good. Anyway, I don't know how numeric IDs are assigned to users and groups - especially those intended to be used by system daemons like mysql or postgreql. I have postgresql on my box and it does this same kind of thing with user and group creation. Do you know what values I should be using so I don't conflict with other potential packages? If you want an example of what I'm talking about, see the PKGBUILD script for postgreql it creates a user and group on the fly as needed. I plan to do the same with my project. I'd remove it. ttf-ubuntu-family-fonts [2] and ttf-ubuntu-font-family [3] provide the new ubuntu font. The former package uses a package name not complying with the source filename. Further on it uses strange version numbers and it is built using a source archive from font.ubuntu.com, but uses only the precompiled ttf-files. Therefore the download 2.3MB instead of 0.7MB seems unnecessary. Please consider deletion of ttf-ubuntu-beta [1] and ttf-ubuntu-family-fonts [2]. Hello, Since python 2.7 in testing is now /usr/bin/python2 but not /usr/bin/python, most AUR packages using python should be changed to use /usr/bin/python2 and depend on python2 instead of python unless they use Python 3. I adopted it however there is no non-vcs source release so I can't convert into a stable package. I set the new package ( http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41506 ) to replace "n2n svn-2". Hi, While moving the python rebuilds I noticed the following packages have issues: - cgmail - gammu - mathomatic The all have commits in community-staging and some of them had entires in the db but not a package in sight. I'm not sure what happened there but someone needs to clean this up (rebuild and upload to community-testing should be fine). While I am at it, everybody make sure they upload packages using devtools. If you do not, we end up with really strange commits in the repos (e.g. repos/community - note the lack of arch) and this causes issues with ABS. I am getting really annoyed with cleaning these up so I will start naming the people who do not use the official tools for interacting with the repos and maybe blocking access if it keeps up... The currently affected PKGBUILDs are as follows: ./community/perl-datetime/PKGBUILD bash: printf: 0,61: invalid number ./community/perl-parse-recdescent/PKGBUILD bash: printf: 1,965001: invalid number ./community/haskell-x11/PKGBUILD error: package "ghc" not found ./community/haskell-x11-xft/PKGBUILD error: package "ghc" not found For the perl packages: provides=("perl-datetime=`printf %.4f ${pkgver/./,} | sed 's#,#.#'`") I don't know what the intention is with ${pkgver/./,} | sed 's#,#.#' but it does not work, as it's replacing "." with "," and then back to ".", but printf naturally fails to deal with the decimal being replaced by a comma. If I understood this correctly, the line should read: provides=("perl-datetime=$(printf "%.4f %s\n" ${pkgver})") For the other two: _ghcver=`pacman -Q ghc | cut -d\ -f 2 | cut -f 1 -d -` depends=("ghc=${_ghcver}" 'libx11') Again, I don't know why go through the trouble of checking a local package that may not exist on all systems (Sergej?). Better "hardcode" the numbers and be done with it.

However I managed to make up a environment that runs. 1) forgive the original build() function, use sh autogen.sh && ./configure --prefix=/usr && make || return 1 2) because the Lua library comes with it doesn't honour DESTDIR, and the fact that we don't need it since already have one. comment out the entire "install:" block for Source/Lua/Makefile 3) the original 'make install' is broken because it only installs the binary. actually the 'Resource' directory is also needed. 4) make a wrapper script to run the game. -- Li Ian-Xue http://b4283.ath.cx

python-numeric is old, replaced by python-numpy and has had issues on x86_64 since python-2.5. These issues are far more noticeable in python-2.7 (as in python-numeric just does not work...), so I intend to drop this package from the repos. Two packages in [community] depend on it: freevo, gogh. When python-numeric gets dropped, so will these packages unless their maintainers (or someone else) do something about it. As the email suggests, I am JerichoKru, the same one that sparked Det's...interesting conversation that took place here. Though I'd rather let that die off and get to the actual issue. chromium-beta has been giving me issue after issue. Because of this, I have not uploaded it yet. 1.) I had figured that 6.0.496.0 would be the beta because it is the latest of the v6's and the v7's are the in dev tree. Det listed what is now the latest stable as the beta...which is obviously not right. 2.) This version apparently doesn't need/incompatible with the gyp patch listed. It stated that the patch was filled with "garbage". 3.) Skipping the patch causes a build error farther down in the compile process. Unfortunately, I forgot to save the output. I'll try again tomorrow as it is 11PM in my timezone. Any input for this would be helpful. As for clamav, it is updated and should work (it worked on my machine, anyway). On a somewhat related note: I had typed a rather long response to Det's...rant but, I tried to sent it with my other email and thus didn't get posted. When thinking about it, that reply would have just fed to the fire. ----- ...for some reason claws-mail can't send emails with hotmail...

Hi guys I'll be departing for a 7-day rural project in a couple of hours. Due to weight/space/carrying-capacity limitations I cannot bring along a laptop. I really believe it'll be out in the middle of nowhere, so the chances for computers, let alone Internet, are 0. As far as [extra] is concerned, there are no pending TODO tasks or flagged packages. None of the rebuilds for [community] has been completed, as I was waiting for community-staging. I have built some of them locally but they are not up in any of the servers or reflected in svn. [aur-general] Naming: qtscrob vs. qtscrobbler

Hi all, I'd like to hear your opinion on the naming of the AUR packages [1] of the QTScrobbler application [2]. The oldest package is "qtscrob" referring to the URL of the sourceforge page and the source code archive name. Although the name of the application stated on the homepage is "QTScrobbler". When I wanted to install the application in March 2010, I searched for "qtscrobbler" on AUR and obviously didn't find the package "qtscrob". Therefore I packaged myself and submitted the packages "qtscrobbler" and "qtscrobbler-cli". When I noticed the duplication I wrote a removal request to the mailing list [3], which was forgotten after a short discussion. (I submitted "qtscrob-cli" as a copy of "qtscrobbler-cli" for conformance having the removal of qtscrobbler* in mind.) The current situation is of course dissatisfying. I'd like to know whether the application name should be preferred over the short name. I don't mind about the maintainership of the packages.
