Hey, I made a screwup on the openntpd package which nastily reveals a weakness in openssh and filesystems. I moved away from using /var/empty/ as a privsep directory, and removed the directory from the package. But since it's empty, it got removed from the system as well in the upgrade. So if you're using openntpd and openssh, BE EXTRA CAREFUL with your next upgrade. openssh does not start if /var/empty/ is not there. Quick fix: after doing pacman -Suy, do mkdir /var/empty as root. Longer fix: openssh, or perhaps the filesystems package should create /var/empty/ and put a hidden file in it so idiots like me won't cause accidents in the future. --vk

Hi guys, Since xorg has moved to extra repository, we will have broken nvidia legacy drivers: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=139388&highlight=x.org We will see how fast new fixed legacy drivers will be released, if ever. As alternatives, you can use nouveau, nv or vesa drivers instead. Okay, it is obvious that we need a kernel which can run on Xen domU for our servers. It would also be very convenient for those running Arch on hosting services that have pv-grub available. Until now, I compiled a modified version of the kernel26 package with pv_ops/Xern enabled which - in theory - should also run on a real machine. If all the external modules compile properly (which they probably do), we could add these options to our normal stock kernel. I haven't tried running it on a real machine though and tpowa said in the past the nvidia module failed. This has to be tested. However, compiling Xen on a 32 bit kernel requires enabling PAE which we refused to do in the past for performance reasons (no idea if these are valid concerns) and due to the fact that we want to encourage people to run 64 bit if they have large amounts of memory. Assuming all of untested things above work, what would you prefer: 1) Switch to PAE on the 32 bit kernel, ship Xen domU support with kernel26 on both architectures. 2) Ship Xen domU support on the 64 bit kernel, and don't on the 32 bit kernel (my favorite so far). 3) Leave kernel26 unchanged and create a separate kernel26-xen package with domU support. The advantage of 3) is that the Xen kernel could be very slim, as almost all hardware drivers could be disabled. The advantage of 1) and 2) is the lower maintenance cost. On a different note, I'd like to try to switch over to pv-grub on our servers. Right now, upgrading the kernel requires copying the kernel to the dom0 manually, thus dom0 access is required to do a (potentially security relevant) kernel update. With pv-grub, upgrading the kernel and rebooting would be handled just like with a normal machine, as the dom0 only loads the pv-grub image which then runs inside the domU and can load the right kernel from there. The pv-grub is only available from Xen 3.3 and later, but we have Xen 3.2 - I compiled pv-grub from 3.4 though and guess it should work with the older hypervisor as well, but I haven't tested that yet. Anyway, please post your opinion on the issues above.

Hi, I have just noticed that it appears currently not possible to have split packages that have some packages in [core] and others in [extra]. This make the gcc split a lot less attractive (gcc-{fortran,objc,ada} are all currently in [core] and not [extra] where I intended). Does anyone have ideas on how we could handle this? Allan

Hi, The new gimp-help will provide seperate packages for eache language as opposed to the curent one (gimp-help-2) which includes all languages. I haven't found a good way to use the replaces array to accomplish this so instead I'll post an announcement (front page news, bbs, ML). Feel free to suggest changes to the announcement draft or another way to do the update. ======================================================================== Update of gimp-help-2 The old gimp-help-2 2.4.2 package that was providing gimp's html help files for several languages was removed from the repo. It will be replaced by new help files for gimp 2.6.0. However, each language is now in its own package. New upstream release, please sign off. Everyone who installed the broken testing/klibc updates for i686, do yourself a favor and revert to the versions in core again BEFORE installing a kernel update (pacman -S klibc klibc-extras klibc-kbd klibc-module-init-tools klibc-udev (v86d)), as you will otherwise have a non-booting system. These updates have been removed from testing for now, but pacman won't automatically revert to the core versions. The x86_64 versions are okay though.

Hi all, I add a small patch from Debian to nss yesterday which applies the cacert root certificate. Some time ago I also made KDE and Qt to use the certs from the ca-certificates package which includes the cert from cacert. So, Arch is now one of the distros where those cerst are supported. BTW: we might now be able to use such a cert for e.g. dev.archlinux.org. PS: ATM I am testing what happens when archlinux.de is exclusively accessible via https. -- Pierre Schmitz, http://users.archlinux.de/~pierre

I put new klibc, klibc-kbd, klibc-m-i-t, klibc-udev, klibc-extras and v86d to testing. Those are no version bumps, but just a rebuild of klibc against 2.6.31 with a small bugfix (see more below) - and the corresponding rebuilds for the new ABI, as with each change of build headers for klibc. mkinitcpio also needed a rebuild due to the klibc-kbd versioned dependency that was wrong - I didn't change the version here either. Signoff procedure: 1) cp /boot/kernel26.img /boot/kernel26.img.working 2) pacman -Syu 3) mkinitcpio -p kernel26 4) reboot i686 packages are completely untested, x86_64 works and boots. About the fixed bug: Recently, ps ax would display: 1 ? Ss 0:01 ini while it should (and does now) display 1 ? Ss 0:01 init [5] This confused and annoyed people. As for uclibc-initramfs: I didn't have time anymore, but last time I tried, I was unable to get the toolchain to work as I would expect. Thus, I keep maintaining klibc crap.

I haven't put one of these out in some time, and a lot has happened since the last one, so bear with me here. There is a lot being left out from this, because there's simply to much to cover. We've had a lot of changes - repository oopses, server reinstalls, and things of that nature - that I simply won't be able to cover without writing a novel. == Newsworthy Items == * Bug Squashing Day We had our first bug squashing day in a long time. Thanks to everyone who helped, it makes everything so much easier. Andreas and Paul, many thanks for organizing this. More details can be found here: http://www.deelab.org/bash/2009/10/bug-squashing-day-results/ * kernel.org Tier 1 mirror I just now setup a mirror for kernel.org. The use geo dns re-routing, so it should work safely and quickly for any country. Additionally, this will get us images on boot.kernel.org eventually, which is impressive. Additionally, they have volunteered to be a tier 1 mirror so that others can rsync from them. == Completed Tasks == * Far too many to list As stated above, a lot has happened since I last wrote one of these. We've had numerous package rebuild frenzies, server reinstalls, code fixes, support for architecture independent packages, and so many more things. So, rather than try to cover all that, I just want to give my personal thanks out to all the developers and TUs. You guys are the ones who keep Arch going strong, and I appreciate all the hard work. It's amazing to see how much people actually care about a lil' ol' Linux distro like this :) == Pending Tasks, Short Term == * Web Server Hiccup Seems like we had our web domU hang on us the other night. This is the second time it has happened, and signs seem to point to it being Xen related. I would like anyone with knowledge or experience here to see if you can find anything. * Mirror Tiering Handling proper mirror tiering will give us a few benefits, the first of which being the fact that it will help us get rid of some of the "mirror not fully synced" issues. It will also help minimize our bandwidth. With the addition of the kernel.org mirror, and mirror.archlinux.no offering to be a tier 1 mirror, I think we can safely send out an email to the mirror admins, requesting a few more tier 1 mirrors. I'd say we shoot for around 5, just to pick a number. With these in place, we can begin the switch over. To do this, we'll simply: * Email all the mirror admins a list of the tier 1 mirrors * Have mirror admins chose a tier 1 mirror * Reply to us when changes are made * Remove their IPs from the DB * After a month or so, remove all IPs still pending (and keep a list of these offenders) * Replacing cron with fcron This was brought up on the ML a bit ago. It appears that most of us are in favor of using fcron to replace our existing dcron. I would like someone to spearhead this move. Any volunteers? * Ensuring Package Quality We run into package quality issues every so often. No, I'm not pointing fingers or anything, I'm guilty of this as well. I'd like to institute some way to ensure that our packages are of the proper quality before they hit the repos. Ideas are welcome. Currently, I had the following ideas in my head: * Add some token to the PKGINFO indicating that makechrootpkg was used This has the con of requiring this tool, when people may be using their own chroots or tools for this. * Make db-scripts check packages with namcap, and reject them on errors This has the con of making the db-scripts slower. * Combine the above: Add a PKGINFO token from namcap We should all be running namcap anyway * Support for community <-> extra moves I would like to get db-script support that allows developers to move packages across svn repos. This is actually fairly involved and should _try_ to include history. This should require ssh connections to each machine for a little boost of added security. Implementation details beyond this have not been thought of. * IRC Developer Meetings We used to have regularly monthly meetings in IRC, where we'd all get together and discuss things. We haven't done this in a while, and some of us have begun to feel like we don't really know each other to well. Well, let's try to change this. I'd like to schedule a developer's meeting for some time in October. I'd like to tentatively suggest Saturday the 24th. We'd all join #archlinux-dev and discuss things on the current status report at that time, and cover any other itches we have that need scratching. Please suggest times, or alternate days if needed. == Pending Tasks, Long Term == * Early-userspace in uClibc klibc has a slow development model, and it doesn't suit us too well anymore. Initially there was promise, but things have come to a near halt. As such, Thomas has proposed we switch from klibc to uClibc for our early-userspace. This is a great idea. This change should be near seamless to the users, but will require much work and testing on our part. I'm sure Thomas could use some help if anyone is interested. I believe all the packages needed are checked into the repos, but mkinitcpio needs changing and fixing. Thomas, would you mind pushing your changes to a branch somewhere? Or even to master if you're satisfied with them so far? This way we can all give you a hand. * Project TODO lists This was brought up a while ago, but I don't see a lot of follow through. For all our internal projects, I'd like to see some sort of public TODO list somewhere. If you'd like to use the bug tracker, that's fine, just add a link to the wiki page. In the Internal Projects wiki page located at: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DeveloperWiki:Internal_Projects we have lists of all the funny little things we maintain for our daily lives. I'd like to see, on this page, some indication of direction for these projects. This has already begun for the developer tools list. Pacman is most likely exempt as it is much more public and active than the other projects, unless Dan or Xavier feels like maintaining a list there :) It seems tedious, but this will actually give us something to point at when people say "How Can I Help?(TM)". * Repo symlinking This idea was put out by Jan a while ago, and I like it. It goes like this: When we put a package in the repos, we stick it in some master directory - we'll call it "packages" for now. Then a symlink is created, linking the "packages" instance of the package to an architecture specific dir. When and if this package moves repositories, the symlink is simply moved. What does this give us? The ability to easily move things from testing to core/extra without overwhelming our server during mirror sync (as mirrors will already have the packages). I think this is a great idea, and would require two things: db-scripts patches, and a script to convert our existing repo.

So, I wanted to revisit the subject of udev rules. Right now, we have rules in /etc/udev/rules.d and /lib/udev/rules.d - the idea was that "upstream" rules goes to /lib and whatever else goes to /etc. This was interpreted by some of our own dev team that we should put whatever udev and packages ship to /lib and whatever we created ourselves to /etc - which is dumb. Right now we have: - rules from upstream packages in /lib - patched rules from upstream packages in /lib - rules from upstream packages in /etc - Arch rules in /etc It is pure chaos and nobody understands what is where and why. It is a nightmare. Back when we had the discussion, I suggested what I will re-suggest now: - All our packages should have udev rules in /lib only. What Arch officially ships is what we consider "upstream". (To put it in the same terminology that perl uses: core-rules and vendor-rules) - User or site specific rules go to /etc, overriding or complementing the "official" rule set (site-rules) This will lead to a clear distinction and a clear rule instead of the chaos we have until now. It is also the only way that makes sense, everything else will lead to the same chaos again. Please comment.

Hi The binutils-2.20 toolchain rebuild is in [testing] for i686. I will do the x86_64 rebuilds in the next day or two. A summary of changes: kernel-headers - bump to latest binutils - bump to latest glibc - grab upstream patchset for proposed future stable release, fix overflow bug (FS#16253), patch to build against latest binutils gcc - bump to latest, use package spitting (gcc-libs, gcc, gcc-fortran, gcc-objc), move static libraries from gcc-libs to gcc, add gcc-ada package, do not run fixincludes during build. I will call for a signoff a few days after getting the x86_64 builds done. Allan

Hi, I'm having some trouble to understand why pacman left some files on the filesystem, but the package was removed. According to this bug report: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16414 pacman left the listed directories and files on the filesystem. I have try to reproduce it and it's true, the files are on the filesystem. My first thought was about the 'emptydirs' option in the PKGBUILD (http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/packages/wicd/repos/extra-i686/PKGBUILD) but that wasn't the solution, the files are still there. I can't determine why this happens, any ideas from your side? -Daniel

I've built the new Xorg 7.5 based on xorg-server 1.7.1rc1 and Mesa 7.6. Some very old drivers have been dropped because they are no more developed and won't build anymore. I hope I have updated all essential parts. Some Xorg fonts related packages still need a bump. Mesa 7.6 is built right now plain upstream. This means Gallium 3d stack for Nouveau and Intel. For Intel we might go back to old way DRI when we can't solve some existing issues. Radeon is built the old DRI way. Let's pray the update goes smooth. So far only Jan has played with Intel drivers. We will probably need some time until all important regressions and bugs have been solved. Good luck. -Andy

Hi all! I wanted to bring this long time ago when I discovered the problem with my old Seagate Momentus 5400.3, but then forgot since my new WD Scorpio Blue is less affected by this. But recently I noticed a couple of reports about the issue on forums and IRC, so I'm bringing this here. The problem is that on some HDDs (and/or with some BIOSes?) HDD head parking is done too often. This can be seen with Load_Cycle_Count in smartctl output being increased quickly (more than once per minute), and heard as relatively frequent clicks during low IO load. More at http://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Known_issues#Drives_which_perform_freq… Basically, if Load_Cycle_Count divided by Power_On_Hours is more than 30-60 and your HDD is powered for many hours every day - your HDD may reach the limit in a couple of years. I want to stress that this is _not_specific to WD Green drives. The problem is easy to fix, but that's if you _know_ about it. I think most of users are not aware of it. Now to the point of this message and why it is on this mailing list. What is the best way to handle this? There is a nice script which automatically tunes HDD options to fix this depending on HDD and/or laptop model. http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tj/storage-fixup.git Would it be okay if we package it and put it in core & install CD? Would it be enough to put this information in Official Install Guide? Would it be better to not care that much about this, and only mention it in some wiki page plus link in (Post-)Install Guide? Hi all, I will be doing a toolchain rebuild probably in the next few days (update packages to binutils-2.20, gcc-4.4.2, kernel-headers-2.6.31.4 and pull a "stable patchset" for glibc (what is roughly proposed for 2.10.2 but little upstream movement on releasing...). As I though I would bring up the possibility of resplitting gcc. I will be using split packaging for gcc and gcc-libs but wondered if I should take it further and split out gcc-objc and gcc-fortran again). For those that do not remember here is the discussion on why they were merged: http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2008-January/004074.… . Essentially, features break if you do not build all the compilers in one go. Now we have package splitting, this is not an issue. So if splitting these is OK: 1) where do fortran and objc libs go? gcc-libs or their own package. The later requires dependency fixing... 2) can I bring in a gcc-ada package at the same time? I have a local gcc package that I can use to bootstrap it. Allan

Hey guys, Can we move the determination of unique .install files inside the loop (see patch below). A few weeks ago I had troubles building koffice, now I had the time to look into it. It appears that due the vast number of splitted packages the install_files variable grew so large it was still not finished adding variables after 12 hours. Determining the uniqueness of the .install files inside the loop this doesn't happen anymore and it now finishes in a couple of seconds. I imagine this is also a problem with other splitted packages (most notably some kde ones?) Hi @all, as most of you know, the (g)vi* packages are a constant subject to suggestions and proposed changes be they stupid or valid. I just like to have some input on two major issues and if we shall pursue them or not: Only vim and gvim are concerne since vi is an entirely different beast now. Here is how the packages are split up: vim: - perl scripting support, since it's small and produces minor overhead - provides runtime files - is mainly intended for command line use where vi is not sufficient gvim: - python (and later again ruby) scripting support for addon scripts - provides X support, vim server support, gtk frontend if invoked with gvim symlink - intended for serious development, I think it's a reasonable assumption that people who do that do not wanna have 80x24 consoles but will have X installed and with X there is a huge likely hood that gtk2 is installed Now, I think that gives a nice and very clear distinction between vim (mainly for console user) and gvim (for developers, but also people who run the vim command in the terminal). Note that after installing the gvim package, the vim command invokes a more powerful, python and X enabled binary. I am getting feature requests, to put it nicely, about enabling python in vim. I'm opposed to that for two reasons: - upon the return of ruby people will pester me about ruby support becuase python is in there and why not ruby .. whine .. blah - I think there is a clear distinction between vim for the console and vim for serious development, and the current layout shows that nicely The arguments about including python are mainly like that: But when I am on this server, or on this very small box, too small to run X and I wanna develop in python etc. I don't think these are valid arguments because they are rare cases. And if it's really true, you can always build a custom python enable smaller vim. Which brings me directly to the second point, the building system. Vim follows a patch based approach which makes the PKGBUILD a fair bit complex. All thes seemed to be fine for the last year but now people seriously pester me that it would be better to build it from cvs/svn and the patch based approach is not good enough anymore because the rebuilds take too long becuase the download takes soooo long. The cvs approach however has a few gotchas IMHO: - first of all I think that's a non issue, becuase Arch is binary based and rebuilding is not really necessary - cvs/svn is behind the patches in vim world - if you rebuild, you rebuild more often, which is supported by the central srccache - I clean up my PKGBUILD directories before rebuilding, I never clean my SRCCACHE so overall I don't benefit from the cvs at all So what I wanna know is, 1. Do we wann have python enabled in vim package (don't forget: as soon as you install the gvim package, you have python in vim and don't use the vim-package binary anymore) 2. Do we wanna have a cvs enabled buildsystem just because upon an initial rebuild the download is faster (It would annoy the hell out of me because as package maintainer I would have to dowload everything everytime) So, I like (g)vim the way it is but I don't wanna be the benevolent I would be okay with 1) if everyone agrees, I know quite few developer use vim. I'm strongly opposed to 2) because it just causes more work and we do have a perfectly usable build system in place. -T

Somehow the texlive-bin PKGBUILD doesn't provide the same binary package that is in the repository. I just committed a gnome-unstable directory with 3 patches that fixes build against poppler 0.12, but building it with makechrootpkg results in a lot of missing binaries. Also, I couldn't build texlive-bin without adding some force commands to ln and rm.

The merge of gnome-unstable with core/extra has been finished. Packages should be available on your mirror soon, which is the moment to remove the gnome-unstable repository from pacman.conf. The gnome-unstable repository will get removed tomorrow. Note that this release comes with a new version of policykit, which installs side by side with the old version. Any policy set in the previous version will not apply to the new version, and any GUI tools available for the old version will not apply policies to the new version. The use of ConsoleKit is advised to get full access to all features in this release.

I have a permission issue when using the kernel26-lts with my usb printer. The device doesn't always get "lp" group. Especially when I switch it off and on again. Then new cups 1.4.x can't find the printer. With kernel 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 the group is always set well. I already asked a few udev upstream devs without a solution so far. See http://www.spinics.net/lists/hotplug/msg02798.html It would be nice if some of you could try confirming my problem and maybe you can help me to find the reason why it fails on my server. Hi, coreutils-8.0 has been released but flagged beta because of some fairly large changes in rm which now uses gnulib's hierarchy traversal (= faster) and many changes to gnulib in the area of filesystem primitives. I found the snapshot before this fully usable, and will do a "make check/test" to ensure everything is working as it should. I would like to put it in [testing] _without_ the option of it every moving to [core]. I know we do this for some software, but never anything so "core" to the system that I know of. So... can I use [testing] for testing in this case? Allan

At this moment we have a gnome-unstable repository, containing GNOME 2.28.0. This repository should be used on top of testing, though I'm working on it to make it compatible with just extra. Todo: - Compile packages against extra depends, not testing - Update some packages, make both architectures identical - Drop PolicyKit from hal, use at_console rules instead - Port remaining policykit-enabled packages to polkit - Drop PolicyKit completely, switch to polkit - Rebuild remaining packages for gmime 2.4 - Look for issues with poppler 0.12, possible rebuilds ahead - Try to track down required rebuilds because of changed dependencies and split packages When my todo-list above here is finished, I'll make an announcement about it. I would like to open it for public testing and allow bugs to be filed in flyspray. I don't want to drag this update through testing because of the huge size: most mirrors already have these packages, and dragging it through testing means just another resync of packages for every mirror. The main packaging changes in this release: - Use devicekit-disks for volume management - Use devicekit-power for power management - Drop hal support from the disk backend in libgphoto - Move from PolicyKit to polkit - Update gdm to 2.28. - Drop esound from the dependency tree - Build with -Wl,--as-needed, remove unneeded dependencies - Use the webkit backend for epiphany. I keep getting many init feature requests for more fancy and cool features in crypttab. Now, the crypttab file format is unflexible and extending it makes the code pretty much unreadable an unmaintainable. This is what I am planning: - Rewrite crypto support in initscripts, with a new configuration scheme (our normal sourced bash-files) - adding all the features from feature requests on the bugtracker. - crypto support will be in a function outside of rc.sysinit for more readability - that function will be POSIX sh compatible (see below) - Add a compatibility layer that converts crypttab entries into the new scheme at runtime so crypttab will still work, but will be deprecated. - Add the optional possibility to also configure the root device like this, so mkinitcpio will add a config file to the initramfs and use the same code, making crypto configuration more straight-forward. The cryptdevice= logic on the kernel command line will override such a configuration and won't be deprecated. I am in the stage of designing the configuration layout, you'll see patches in git soon.

This is a small daemon that was originally part of autowifi. It will be a depend or optdepend on the next netcfg's auto-wireless mode. This will be a reliable wireless roaming mode. The daemon is somewhat similar to wpa_cli -a $script, but adds logging and avoids race conditions by adding a timeout on disconnection, an idea stolen from ifplugd. Is it okay to bring this to core? Dependencies are only glibc and wpa_supplicant, makedepends just gcc. Package is in testing for review.

Now we have split the big package into many small ones - that's okay. But you neither provided a reasonable upgrade path, without any conflicts to the old package and so on. Such problems have to be considered before pushing such a package to extra, not after.

Hi, device-mapper & lvm2 2.02.52-1 are now in testing. Update: - Minor upstream update: lvm2: 2.02.48 -> 2.02.52 device-mapper: 1.02.33 -> 1.02.37 - Implemented split package. For this to work, I had to set the package version of device-mapper to 2.02.52 as I found out that the dbscripts can't handle split packages with different pkgver. -Renamed pkgconfig file (close FS#15909) Please test and signoff. Users signoff would be appreciated as very few dev uses this. Eric

Hi, I am pushing initial rebuilds for db-4.8 into [testing]. Many rebuilds are still needed so be prepared for issues if you update at the moment... I have built enough to keep most systems booting. Devs: make sure you use the LDFLAGS from pacman-3.3.1 in your makepkg.conf. I have not built subversion for x86_64 yet as I have to rebuild apache first because someone did not use those flags with the ldap/postgres rebuilds... Remember to mark off you rebuilds on the TODO list as you go. Someone will want to generate a rebuild list for [community]. The libraries with name changes are libdb-4.7 and libdb_cxx-4.7. Allan

In the spirit of Eli making a bunch of patches for the AUR, I finally decided to sit down tonight and figure out why the heck namcap was sucking it up, and did a little code cleanup along the way. namcap.py is now a bit cleaner and separated into functions, and the real treat is namcap is a hell of a lot faster now that I found the bottleneck, which was the depends hook. The first 6 patches in this series lead up to the 7th, which is where the speed increase is found. Let me know what you see, otherwise it would be cool to get this in and a new namcap release made, as it has rather dramatic effects with regards to speed. Hey guys, Past week I was reading through the buildbot manual, but I decided not to use it. IMO it is far too complex, fat and not something which has the needed functionality easily available (you can extend it with python scripting, but what's the fun of that huh?) So yesterday I decided I will write my own. I'll give it some more though what functionality we need most (ability to prioritize tasks, manually adding tasks, getting changes from svn to name a few). So what do I need from you? - name (what's a tool without a name huh?) - git-repo (not direct, but sometime in the next two weeks or so. Maybe we need to first pick a name too) - ideas. What do you guys want to see first? How do we want to get notified (daily mail, using a webpage which lists success of all completed/pending tasks, something else)? You get the idea, now is the time to speak up. Ronald

Hi all, FS#12890 (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12890) suggests we clean up some crud from the base group. I started a wiki page back in July to look at doing this (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Allan/Base_Cleanup) which should not be too outdated. The basic premise in my clean up was 1) remove "useless"/unneeded packages 2) remove packages that are in the base group only because they are dependencies of packages in the base group. An example for #2: no-one really wants to install libfetch apart from for use by pacman. Thus libfetch does not need to be part of the base group. That might be slightly controversial... but I think it makes sense. When I install, I look through the package lists and select the packages I need. I do not directly need libfetch but I do select pacman. Thus pacman is directly part of my base install but libfetch is only indirectly. I need opinions here. Does this make sense to people? Have my selections been too strict or not strict enough? Allan

So let's do this. Would someone like to volunteer to boot our our old crusty dcron in favor of fcron? On a related note: dcron does not support /etc/cron.d/ and it irritates me to no end. fcron can do this, correct? If not, we should remove the cron.d dir from the package

Please signoff. -Andy SQLite version 3.6.18 is now available for download from the SQLite website. http://www.sqlite.org/ The SQLite source code is tracked and managed using the Fossil distributed configuration management system. See http://www.fossil-scm.org/ for further information on Fossil. SQLite was previously versioned using CVS. The entire CVS history has been imported into Fossil. The older CVS repository remains on the website but is not read-only. There are two major enhancements in SQLite version 3.6.18. The first is a series or refinements to the query planner that help SQLite to choose better plans for joins where in the past it was selecting suboptimal query plans. The SQLITE_ENABLE_STAT2 compile-time option has been added to cause SQLite to collect histogram data on indices when the ANALYZE command is run. The use of histograms improve the query planning performance even more. The second major enhancement is that SQLite now support recursive triggers. The older non-recursive behavior of triggers is still the default behavior. Recursive triggers are activated using the recursive_triggers pragma. In addition to allowing triggers to call themselves (either directly or indirectly) the new capability also fires DELETE triggers on rows that are removed from a table as a result of REPLACE conflict resolution processing. Non-recursive triggers are still the default behavior since this is least likely to cause problems for existing applications. However, we anticipate that triggers will become recursive by default beginning with release 3.7.0. At that point, applications that want to continue using the older non-recursive trigger behavior will need to use the recursive_triggers pragma to disable recursive triggers. This version of SQLite also contains bug fixes, though none of the bugs are serious and all are obscure, so upgrading is optional. The SQLite core continues to have 100% branch test coverage and so despite the many changes in this release, the developers believe that this version of SQLite is stable and ready for production use. several devs have bumped Pidgin in last few months because its maintainer "pizzapunk" is absent for months now and never giving any words in our discussions. we should find a new maintainer for this application. it's widely used in our community. I myself don't want to do this work. the new packager should think about moving in farsight2 from community to extra for adding video/audio support. but user feedback is still showing poor quality of that implementation (fedora also has it enabled in their devel tree). anybody interested? on the other site we should send again a ping out to all devs asking if they are still aboard. Alex(kth5) is also absent for years now and maybe more guys have silently left us. -Andy

Hey guys, this morning I synced my old i686 laptop to testing, thereby upgrading the kernel to 2.6.31 and such. I did so when I was in the train (I downloaded the packages already at home) on the way to my internship. I rebooted the system after the upgrade, but it won't start anymore. It just hangs forever at the line 'waiting for udev uevents to be processed' (although one of my tries actually went to checking filesystems before it hanged and two times it hanged at 'loading modules'). Problem is I don't have a live cd or anything here and my laptop can't boot from usb, but I really need some code and documents which are on my laptop right now. I'm kinda lost here, but is there some way to accomplish this or at least get into an early shell where I could mount an usb drive? Ronald

Hi all, I have just pushed initial libldap-2.4.x packages and postgresql-8.4.x (with Douglas) to [testing]. These require many rebuilds which will take a couple of days, so holding of updating would probably be a good thing... Devs, take a look at the TODO lists and get building! It would be good if all are using the new LDFLAGS in makepkg.conf as this will reduce our rebuild numbers in the future. LDFLAGS="-Wl,--hash-style=gnu -Wl,--as-needed" Thanks, Allan

I'd like to re-adopt some packages I used to maintain until the move to svn, some of which have now been adopted by Sergej (whom I hope won't mind if I grab them back). Sergej, why did you adopt perl-cpanplus-pacman? I use a clean chroot to build packages. Currently, testing is not enabled for it. I guess it is possible to use the same chroot with an extra layer to build packages for testing, but I lack time to investigate this. Could you guys tell me how to set this up? Or is it easier or safer to set up a separate chroot for testing? Thanks in advance! F

Hi all, will move a first set of PHP 5.3 packages to testing.This is a major update which might break some scripts but at least the configuration file php.ini will need a manual update. And instead of abusing optdepends there are now separate packages for some optional modules like the one for postgresql etc.. Some notes: * update your php.ini * module path is now /usr/lib/php/modules * session, mbstring and zlib are now built in * the fileinfo module is now built in and no longer a separate package * mysqlnd is anabled; so libmysqlclient is no longer needed * Setting default-character-set in my.cnf causes encoding problems * Set date.timezone in php.ini * third party extensions need to be updated * the Suhosin 0.9.8 is included; please read http://www.hardened-php.net/suhosin/download.html * There are also new versions of the suhosin and apc extension make sure to review their configuration as well PHP was split into the following packages: php php-apache php-cgi php-curl php-enchant php-gd php-gmp php-intl php-ldap php-mcrypt php-odbc php-pear php-pgsql php-pspell php-snmp php-sqlite php-tidy php-xsl Note that for using php on a webserver you either need the cgi or apache sapi. It happened to me in the past that I ran "extrapkg" by mistake on a package that had not been updated. It still ended up in ~/staging/extra on gerolde, and when I ran "/arch/db-update extra" it died in the middle of the process of updating a dozen packages. I had to clean the mess by hand. This patch avoids this situation by checking, before starting the update process, whether any pkg in the staging dir is actually already present in the ftp repo, and in such a case removing it from the staging dir. Hi, I know that most of you doesn't really use WindowMaker or think it's obsolete. Nevertheless I use it daily at my main desktop and I'm very happy with it. Sadly there were no release since 4 years! :( At the moment there are some very active developers which forked the actual last CVS snapshot of WindowMaker and doing a lot of work with new features and bugfixes. The mailinglist of WindowMaker is very active with those developers and it looks promising. I have used there GIT snapshot since a few days and it looks very good. I would like to replace our official package with a regular updated GIT snapshot package to give the new developers as much feedback as possible and to give our WindowMaker users a more fresh WindowMaker than the 4 years old one. Hi, For the upcoming {lib,open}ldap update, there are a few bug that can be addressed: FS#12946 - [openldap] Please unsplit I see no issue with joining openldap and openldap-clients. It adds no new deps to openldap and only increases the package size by a small amount. Any reason they were split? I understand the splitting of libldap. FS#14598 - [openldap] enable slapd overlays (slapo) This is a tougher one... Adding the "--enable-overlays=mod --enable-modules=yes" configure flags results in a whole lot of libtools files that appear to actually be needed (binaries link to libltdl). I know not a lot about this so am unsure how to proceed. As an aside, we will probably end up being the only Linux distro with files in this package linked to libfetch. Allan

I'm building GNOME 2.27.92 at this moment, and I'm coming to the point where I have to package gnome-bluetooth. This package depends on a new package called obexd, which seems to be in SVN, but not in the repositories. It looks like something that was left behind, or just never finished. Trying to finish this package, I found out that we have bluez 4.39 in the repositories, while upstream is at 4.53, which is so many versions ahead that 4.39 doesn't even shop up in history anymore. If I can recall, I was the one who updated bluez to 4.39 a few months ago. I'm not the official Bluetooth maintainer, and it's not my intention to become the official bluetooth maintainer either. I thought we attracted a developer for this, but somehow there's nothing done with bluez maintenance after the initial bump to the 4.x version.

I can believe it, and although it runs quite fast on my quad-core desktop box, it definitely crawls on my Eee. You might have to poke him to provide diffs and separate patches, but he does seem willing to help you guys out. -Dan

Hi, The current heimdal package does not build due to an autoconf update (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16015) I have a patch that can be applied to fix that but I do not particularly want to rebuild given it does not affect the actual package. It is also a bit of a waste of time applying the patch only to trunk as a new heimdal release will occur before any rebuild is likely to be needed. Can I apply the patch and archrelease core-{i686,x86_64} or would that require a sign-off? Allan

I rebuilt evms to fix FS#16079. This moved various files to /sbin and /lib to allow systems with /usr on a separate EVMS volume. I also added a couple of upstream patches, a patch for the --as-needed flag and removed the install file (covered by optdepends). As I do not use EVMS, I would like reports of it still working before I move it to [extra]. This is one occasion where it is safe to install a single package from the [testing] repo. Allan

Because of the security vulnerabilities fixed in thunderbird 2.0.0.23, I decided to build it for myself ahead of schedule.
