Guys, I almost had a heartattack tonight when I updated my laptop and X died. I though "oh no, here we go again -- the intel story all over again..." After update I did a clean restart and the first thing I noticed was the screen resolution changed (twice) during the boot process: (1) First few lines ~ 640x480 regular text (2) Arch console splash displayed, looked like 1024x768 ::process a [result] ::process b [result] ::process c [result] (3) The something switched again and right justified the results: ::process d [result] ::process e [result] ::process f [result] Then when Runlevel 5 was reached and X started it hung and looked like it was frying my screen (started out blackscreened and then became progressively brighter until ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console). I killed kdm (initially using kdm3) with /etc/rc.d/kdm3 stop and confirmed all was dead with ps ax | grep kdm. Thinking it could have been a problem with kdm3 versus kdm, I tried to start kdm with /etc/rc.d/kdm start -- same result. X hung, same frying screen look ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console. Crap! Ok, then I decided to try starting X without an xorg.conf to see if the defaults would work. /etc/rc.d/kdm start -- same result. X hung, same frying screen look ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console. Alright, I killed everything off and tried the kde3 greeter with /etc/rc.d/kdm3 start -- Ha! It worked (I'm typing now) Whatever is going on with the modules moving into the kernel, etc. there are some very nasty unexpected consequences for users. I am glad I was able to get the kde3 greeter to start X, but I suspect that if I only had kde4 installed, I would be dead-in-the-water. To be honest, I don't even know what driver is being used at the moment (I haven't had time to check. I thought I would get this post out in case some other radeonhd user is freaking out after update). I have captured the following information and I'm making it available to the devs if anyone is interested in what happened here. This laptop is an old Toshiba P205d (Radeon RS690M graphics card). I sucefully installed Arch and XFCE4 on my notebook (by the way, awesome performance compared to Win7), my wired network is connecting Ok, I'm using networkmanager to manage my connections... Listmates, Here is an off-the-wall one for the BASH guys. Many times I need to get file or directory information from the command line with wildcards in the filename or path. I have always hated having to quote the filename or path to prevent shell expansion before it gets to my script. I was pecking around on a script for rsync that would take the same type of file and path information with wildcards and hit upon a really cool way to handle the input without having to quote the names with wildcards to prevent expansion. (.. at least I thought it was cool) Any way, I thought somebody else could get some use out of it. I've replaced the rsync calls with echo statments so your can test it if you have any use for it. Any script that deals with multiple files or filespecs is a candidate for its use. Take a look. The process is a 2-loop process with an Array of cli inputs as the outer loop and the inner loop tests whether the array element holds a directory or a filespec with globbing. If it is a filespec with wildcards, then the wildcards are processed with the inner loop using ls for the individual files. Works for one file or a thousand specified in as many chunks as you want to put on the command line: #!/bin/bash --norc OLDIFS=$IFS IFS=$'\n' ## Fill an Array with all CLI input declare -a CLIARRAY CLIARRAY=( "$@" ) ## Step through CLIARRAY with ls to expand wildcards and process ## files specified on the command line sequentially. Rely on ## rsync to throw error if bad filename ## Simple echo is used for this example for ((a=0;a<${#CLIARRAY[@]};a++)); do ## if the argument is a directory rsync in 1 shot, else rsync each file if [[ -d ${CLIARRAY[${a}]} ]]; then echo "directory: ${CLIARRAY[${a}]}" else for b in $(ls ${CLIARRAY[${a}]}); do echo "file: $b" done fi done IFS=$OLDIFS exit 0 If you are interested in using it with rsync as I had it originally, just replace the first echo with: rsync -ruv ${CLIARRAY[${a}]} ${SSUSER}@${DESTHOST}:${DESTPATH} and the second echo with: rsync -ruv $b ${SSUSER}@${DESTHOST}:${DESTPATH} This allowed me to collect a lot of dispersed information for troubleshooting the X issues that have been plaguing me with a minimum of typing. I had used it like: 2nv /var/log/mes* /var/log/Xorg.* /var/log/kdm.log (the script name was 2nv (short for rsync to nirvana) but it allow chunks to be thown into it and it would nicely rsync the wanted files to their destination. Listmates Does anybody know who has the originals of the wallpapers in /usr/share/archlinux/wallpaper? I as because I would like to get the backgrounds but have the arch logo moved to the lower left corner instead of the center or the right where they are covered by the kde4 weather app and CPU meter. I don't mind putting the arch logos back on just the plain backgrounds, but with the textures and patterns involved, there aren't something you can just move the logo on. [arch-general] Kernel Updates & radeonhd -- what does that mean for me compiling the radeonhd from git?

Guys, I don't know exactly how the kernel changes would effect me compiling and installing the radeonhd module from the radeonhd git repository (if at all). My question is "If I compile and install the radeonhd driver, will the new kernel setup use my module or will it use so precompiled module that is built into the kernel?" In the past, for testing all I had to do was build drm and build the radeonhd driver, install both and restart X. How does the new setup effect that? Do I have to rebuild the initfs with mkinitcpio -p kernel26 every time I build a new module like with the intel driver? What say the gurus? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hi List, I upgraded a couple of days ago not having done so for a number of weeks and now vi dosn't work properly in a konsole - the key allocations seem all wrong (eg up/down arrows, insert, delete > all print A', B' etc. Clueless as to where to start. Any help appreciated. Richard

Hello, Mumble [1] is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software. It has a stable version package on AUR [2]. Would it be possible to have Mumble in [community]? Mumble is very popular application and it doesn't have any license issues [3]. It has 216 votes on AUR. Pkgstats reports 8.91 % usage [4]. Having Mumble in official repository would help users installing it and keeping it up-to-date. (I switched from Gentoo to Arch two days ago and first sent this message to arch-dev-public which turned out to be read-only. Listmates, I did a fresh install of 2009.08 on a new box and I am getting a weird pacman error where pacman doesn't recognize the first "Server" statement in mirrorlist. (2009.08 installed perfectly) All 3 of my other arch boxes work fine with the mirrorlist file and do not give the error. I have even copied the mirrorlist from one of my other boxes to the new box and the error still occurs. Even though I get the error, pacman works just fine. The error is: error: config file /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, line 193: directive 'Server' not recognized Line 193 is just the first sever in mirrorlist: 192 # United States 193 Server = http://mirrors.gigenet.com/archlinux/$repo/os/i686 194 Server = http://archlinux.unixheads.org/$repo/os/i686 Any ideas?
