[arch-general] things specific to Arch?

Hello everyone, New member here and new Arch user having come over from arch-based Manjaro. I admit i installed with Architect and am thankful for it as i don't know that i would have been able to do so without it. So far my experience has been a good one, but i know i have much to learn. One thing that puzzles me is with every other linux i've used i formatted a usb flash drive with the command sudo mkdosfs -n xxxx -I /dev/sdx where x's are specific to file names and disk drives. This does not work in my Arch (the development version and lxqt. Is there a different way specific to Arch, or something i need to download to get this function? Also, usually when i first install a linux there are updates, sometimes tons of them. When i use pacman -Syu it says there is nothing to update. Is this common/ correct? I appreciate Arch for its up to date repository, among many other things. There are just a few things i need to know in order to use it better. Good to be a part of the real deal. [arch-general] Thinkpad 770 - Init exists but couldn't execute it (error -26)

I apologize for crossposting from the forum, but I am not getting any replies there so far. I recently became an owner of a Thinkpad 770, which rather ancient by modern standards and decided to give it a spark of fresh life by installing Arch on it. The CD boots okay, but when I try to actually boot x86 Arch, it Kernel Panics with the subject title. It tries /bin/init, /sbin/init and /bin/sh, failing with the same message for all of them. Some searching shows that ERRNO 26 is for a busy file, but I've no clue what may be accessing all the init files at the time of the boot. I tried passing init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd, but it fails with error -2. Is systemd not on the CD? I have read about successful installations of Arch on this machine previously, but they mentioned no problems of the sort, presumably that was pre-systemd Arch. Someone mentioned last month about using pacman hooks for btrfs snapper snapshots like YaST does with openSUSE (cf. https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermai l/arch-general/2016-February/040589.html). Here's a little package I put together to do this: https://aur.archlinux.org/pac kages/snap-pac/ Just install the package and use pacman as normal. From the wiki page: "Each configuration file is named in the style of /etc/modules-load.d/<program>.conf. Configuration files simply contain a list of kernel modules names to load, separated by newlines." Why was the file 'b43.conf' containing only: b43 incorrect? Is not 'b43' the name of the kernel module?

[arch-general] SSL/TLS still seems to be screwed up (retrieving Mail with Thunderbird)

While being connected via an insecure VPN I had once more left my email client open by accident (Thunderbird). Though access to imap.gmail.com shall be secured by SSL/TLS my gmail password was malversated within a few seconds; i.e. I got a login attempt from HongKong and had to change the password after disconnecting. Is anyone here who can explain the insecurity of SSL/TLS in its current state? Does Thunderbird support certificate pinning? Or do you think that there are still errors in the implementation of the protocol? What about libressl for Linux?

Hello, I hope someone can reproduce this one and can point me to some bug report. I'm using the closed source Nvidia driver and a default Gnome installation. Since the last update, the following happens: Usually Gnome runs two X servers. One on ":0" and one on ":1". The last one is the one, I actually use when I'm logged in. GDM keeps running on :0 (VT1). So if I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, I get back to the login screen. This exactly same configuration also applies to my laptop with an Intel GPU. Here, I also have two X servers running all the time. Since yesterday's update, after some time the first X server terminates for whatever reason. One possible solution for a (temporary) fix could be if there is any way to ask GDM somehow to immediately terminate this X server on VT1 after logging in. Thanks in advance Manuel

Hi, I learned some time back that one could make gnome capture midori passwords through: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/midori-passwordmanager I tried it by then, but I didn't like because gnome-keyring was capturing all passwords. I don't use desktop environment, so I was using in my ~/.xinitrc: eval $(gnome-keyring-daemon --start --components=pkcs11,secrets) As I use ssh-agent + keychain, I just removed the ssh agent... However that was capturing every password, from firefox, thunderbird, etc. Although one could refuse to capture them, it was uncomfortable to me, so I decided NOT to use gnomekeyring just for midori. The thought I have, is that perhaps there's a way to specify gnome-keyring to only pay attention to midori passwords, and nothing else. Though I don't see that in its options through the gnome-keyring-daemon man page. If there's a way, please let me know... Thanks, -- Javier

Readers, USB storage media used to appear automatically on the xfce desktop, but not now. From dmesg | tail: uas: probe of 3-1:1.0 failed with error -12 Automount has seemingly failed today. The udev wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Udev) doesn't make sense to a weak novice like me. Other advice please?

[arch-general] System like glue, High IO Wait.

Hello Everybody, I have some trouble with my ArchLinux Installations. The Systems are very unresponsive (long waiting on gui interaction). In Htop I can see a high CPU wait time,and a high cpu load, but in iftop no IO load is on the drives. I have these Probelem with 3 Arch Installations. These systems run kf5. All installations runs ArchLinux Stable (not testing), and the Installations are up to date. On my parents PC the problem only appear after the last update. I have copy the output to pastebin. http://pastebin.com/E4xnQKhJ For me it looks like a graphics bug. I have downgraded the kernel to an older version but it does not resolve the problem. Maybe anybody know something about that. Or have an larger expertise in investigating this bug. I use archlinux now longer than six years. I have solved much problems. But this bug makes me crazy.. Hi! I believe it's a layer 8 error, but I can not change kernel.sysrq at boot to anything else than defined by Arch packages. I read the manpage, wiki and google a few times yet I can't spot my mistake. I have this file: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17 Mar 23 02:05 /etc/sysctl.d/10-sysrq.conf With this content: kernel.sysrq = 1 Yet any time I log in the `kernel.sysrq = 16` parameter from /usr/lib/sysctl.d/50-default.conf overrides the one I defined above. Hi, I followed this guide install archlinux in banana pi and works fine: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Banana_Pi I like install the kodi-rbp in banana pi: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kodi#Raspberry_Pi The driver graphics has installed fine, with the command startx , the graphical works fine. But the problem is kodi, not working... Updating from virt-install 1.3.2-3 to 1.3.2-4 didn't work. Several files owned by no package cause a conflict. Since I never build anything virt related myself and Arch always was up-to-date, there must have been an issue with an update, that didn't removed those files. Who might be the culprit, pacman? Or virt-install from community? I didn't report a bug, since assumed the culprit is virt-install, than likely an old package version and maybe the culprit is something else. Archdevs, What is the current policy for having wiki-contributions re-written? I have been a wiki-contributor for years, I've more than 28 years Unix/Linux experience, I am an attorney, a registered professional engineer, and I have spent years doing technical writing for NASA MOD and Space Flight Operations -- I know technical writing. Over the past year or so it seems like every wiki contribution made is re-written to the point that the immediacy of the needed information is lost, is replaced by a link, or the contribution is reworded in a bewildering manner. Under what criteria does this take place? It has gotten to the point where you just get tired of helping -- why bother? Under the current system, the pages are slowly becoming less-useful rather than more useful as more and more information is chopped out of pages or replaced by links to 3rd-party pages that may (or may not) be there tomorrow. When I first began using Arch in '09, the pages were written such that you could fully-complete whatever task the page addressed without bouncing around from page-to-page hunting for all the pieces of the puzzle. That is no longer the case. Don't get me wrong, the Arch-wiki pages are still by far the most useful of any distribution, but understanding the criteria under which this is taking place will help those willing to contribute determine whether to make a contribution or not. All, When I ended up with a hand-me-down supermicro server from a local ISP, I decided to try virtualizing all my hosts. The company I got this from recommended vmware ESXI as the hypervisor. It was a pleasant surprise to find that ESXI is a basic Linux system. (albeit a very limited and quirky setup). I've installed Arch as the first vm, assigning 8-cores and 16G of RAM. It is up and running fine. (it is installed on a raid1 array volume from a LSI controller which exists as a single datastore in esxi -- if that makes any difference) I am trying to setup fluxbox on arch so I can access the vm via rdesktop (or something similar) via a GUI on a as needed basis. I would rather not have a display manager running all the time, so I'm attempting to use the startx route. When I try to start x, I receive the following error telling me that "Only console users are allowed": $ startx /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg.wrap: Only console users are allowed to run the X server xinit: giving up xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused xinit: server error Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console I understand that it wants X only to be started from the actual physical console, but when I access the vm over ssh, I don't have one. (I am starting the vm, ssh'ed into esxi with 'vim-cmd vmsvc/power.on 1', so there is no console anywhere else) What would be the best solution? Have arch boot to the graphical target loading a display manager? ... or is there some way I can simply startx as needed so I don't leave the dm running all the time on the vm? All, I'm confused by the partitioning wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Partitioning) It says: If using GRUB legacy as the bootloader, one must use MBR What about adding disks to this system? Must they be partitioned MBR or can I use GPT on the additional disks. (I haven't used GPT before, so this has me stumped). Current setup is Arch booting from grub (grub2) on 1T raid1 mdadm array. I have a pair of 3T drives I want to add to the system. (as a 3T raid1 mdadm array). I want to use the entire disk in a single partition which is why I want to partition the disks GPT (leaving 100M unpartitioned at the end). Hi, After the latest update to my system, whenever I try to connect my bluetooth headset, it connects properly, and then after sometime, it immediately disconnects. Hi! Since the update to 2.0 the usage graphs use nonexisting fonts - both TTY and uxterm show the "empty box" unicode character instead of the fonts shown on htop 2.0 screenshots. I did not find any missing dependency for htop on my system. Do anyone else have this issue? Any ideas? Shall I install a new font for this? If so, which one? Thank you in advance. Regards, Garmine

Dear Archers, I am trying to get my Gemalto USB Shell Token V2 (GPG-Smartcard-Reader in a USB-Stick) to work on Arch. I've set up Udev in the way I did successfully in Ubuntu 12.04.LTS. However, no success. I am still trying to figure out where the trouble lies. I can never see the card using gpg --card-status But sometimes I see its fields when using pcscs_scan. Possible culprits: pcscd, which sometimes gives errors, gpg's USB support? Has anyone had success in setting up this reader or similar smartcard readers? Or had similar troubles? All, I'm working to setup fluxbox on a virtual arch install inside ESXI which I will access via rdesktop (or something similar). In configuring flux to start at boot I was following the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinitrc The point about copying the default xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc references a file that no longer exists in the current Xorg install. e.g.: cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc What is the current way to set up your ~/.xinitrc (or is that even needed anymore?) -- David C. So, somehow my default web browser got changed from SeaMonkey back to Firefox. (Bleh!) I ended up cleaning up after xdg-open in the process of correcting my default web browser. In ~/.local/share/applications/ (where user-customized .desktop files go), there were several files in the format userapp-<appname>-<short_hash>.desktop. userapp-Firefox-FIK3WX.desktop userapp-Pale Moon-1HNY8X.desktop userapp-SeaMonkey-YV09AY.desktop userapp-Thunderbird-PIZCZW.desktop (Wow! I have gone through a lot of web browsers lately.) I remember creating a few .desktop files in this directory, but I don't remember creating any userapp-* files. The contents of userapp-Firefox-FIK3WX.desktop were: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Version=1.0 Type=Application NoDisplay=true Exec=/usr/lib/firefox/firefox %u Name=Firefox Comment=Custom definition for Firefox This is weird. There is only an English comment (the default has many languages), and this one has set NoDisplay. I deleted all my custom .desktop files. I have no use for them anymore. And back to the problem of default web browsers. These userapp .desktop files got into mimeapps.list (now located in ~/.config/). I suppose the short hash for SeaMonkey changed, causing mimeapps.list to fallback to the next web browser listed in mimeapps.list. I had to weed all the userapp garbage out and replace them with the system-wide .desktop file names. What daemon creates these mysterious userapp .desktop files? I don't want this daemon creating this junk on my system. --Kyle

Hi I have successfully setup strongswan VPN server following instructions here[1]. I tested the server by connecting a Blackberry client and a Windows Phone client. Both used IKEv2 and worked fine. I have another laptop, running Arch, that I want to connect to the VPN server. But I can't figure how to configure strongswan as client. The link [1] doesn't describe it. Hi there, The hardware is Asus K501UX running linux-4.5.0-mainline from aur and a GNOME desktop. The problem is the system freeze when it is powering down (not always but very often). See attached files for logs from properly (power-down-ok-tail.log) and improperly (power-down-fail-tail.log) finished power down sequences. Any clues what should/could I do to fix the issue? Hi All, I’ve been a Linux user off and on for ten years or so, and over the past while really come to enjoy the simplicity of Arch. I decided to install on my new HP laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 10. I honestly almost feel like I preferred the BIOS/boot sector situation. I understand the advantages of EFI in theory, but Win 10 is driving me nuts with its refusal to be a good EFI citizen. Compounding the frustration is the fact that I’m totally blind, and thus my ability to interact with EFI is limited. I’ve tried the wiki-recommended approach of using BCDEdit to set the {fwbootmgr} DEFAULT entry to the Linux boot manager, in my case systemd-boot. As far as I can tell it does absolutely nothing, that is, Windows still boots after a computer restart. The only way I’ve managed to boot Linux is to change BootNext, or as BCDEdit calls it, BootSequence. This works for a one-time boot but is fairly tedious. The alternative wiki approach of changing the path of {bootmgr}, doesn’t seem to do anything either. Windows still boots as it always has. I note that {fwbootmgr} and {bootmgr} seem to be different. I’ve considered changing the path of {fwbootmgr} instead, but ben reluctant for fear of locking myself out of Windows. Any advice would be appreciated. If this were a BIOS system I would have no trouble with Grub. Thanks much, Zack.

All, I need to downgrade php from 7 to 5.6. I built the 5.6.19 package from AUR and I'm now at the install stage. Before I do I thought I would ask if I need to remove php7 before installing php5.6? The PKGBUILD has no 'conflicts' or 'replaces' specified and they are prefixed differently (e.g. php and php56), but what I am unclear on is how my applications will know which one to use? This was necessitate when php7 broke part of my groupware package (webdav/caldav/carddav) that I need working until those can be upgraded. Do I just install php56 along side php7 or remove php7 first? If removed, then I set IgnorePkg in packman.conf -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hi All, One of the perks of being blind is that I don’t need the screen to work. I prefer to keep it off for privacy whenever possible. On earlier hardware, I used to be able to use the vbetool command to turn off the screen. Nowadays that seems no longer to work, “vbetool dpms off,” returns “illegal instruction.” I was wondering if anybody knew of a way too do this under current versions of Arch? Ideally, I could turn off the screen for both virtual consoles and X sessions, whenever i get around to installing Gnome. I realize this is a bit of an unusual request. Sadly, my laptop doesn’t have any easily identified hardware buttons to do this sort of thing. Thanks for any tips, Zack.

Hello, I've released new versions of the abi-compliance-checker and abi-dumper tools that are now able to easily verify compatibility of changes in the Linux kernel ABI: https://github.com/lvc/ 1. The kernel should be compiled with CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO=y and CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_REDUCED=n additional options. 2. Create ABI dump for vmlinux: abi-dumper vmlinux -vnum 4.4.5 -kernel-export -o ABI.dump (warning: may take about 5Gb of RAM and about half an hour to analyze debug info on a powerful computer) 3. Compare ABI dumps to produce report: abi-compliance-checker -l kernel -bin -old ABI-0.dump -new ABI-1.dump The new -kernel-export option of the abi-dumper is introduced to dump only public exported symbols of the kernel, i.e. declared in the ksymtab/ksymtab_gpl binary sections + system calls. I've applied this approach on the recent releases of the Linux kernel (2.6.36-4.4.5) as an example and prepared the compatibility table here: http://abi-laboratory.pro/tracker/timeline/linux/ The distribution specific changes in the kernel can be verified in the same way to prevent/minimize ABI differences with upstream or between sequential releases. Hello, I upgraded my desktop about 10 minutes ago, and it looks like virtualbox-host-dkms gained a new dependency: linux-headers. On this desktop, I have only the linux-lts kernel and its accompanying linux-lts-headers installed, so why is linux-headers necessary? In the pacman -Syu output, it looks like dkms gives up when trying to build modules for the linux (4.4) kernel. However, it still builds the modules for linux-lts. [arch-general] Compositing broken on laptop, Compton and xcompmgr

I've been using Compton on my laptop for about a year without any issues. Recently, I noticed that transparency stopped working, and even more recently, shadows stopped working. If I try calling Compton from the command line I get an error saying "Failed to make GLX context current". I tried to use xcompmgr, but shadows and transparency still don't work, though I don't get any error messages. My Compton command is compton -b -z -c -r 32 My xcompmgr command is xcompmgr -r 32 -o 0.75 -l -16 -t -16 -a -c On Compton, I tried multiple backends, none were successful. I am testing this within bspwm, and got the same error on xmonad as well. However, compiz seems to be working perfectly in my xfce sessions. Recently, WiFi broke on my laptop as well, and now I have to run rfkill unblock WiFi when I start my computer. I'm thinking due to the recent onslaught of issues that this may be a hardware problem, but the laptop is only 3 years old. Any idea what's wrong? Thanks, Harley Wiltzer

I first stumbled upon this two years ago and opened a thread in the forum to ask about it [1]. I never got an answer but lived happy and forgetful about it, until some days ago another user PMed me to know if I had ever found out why mount consistently showed `stripe=4` as a mount option for the `/boot` partition, whether or not we leave it in /etc/fstab of use `defaults`. This piqued my interest again, so I'm submitting it here in hope somebody can enlighten us. Please see the original post for all the details. I can confirm that to this day, `$ mount | grep stripe` still returns /dev/mapper/boot-arch on / type ext4 (rw,stripe=4,data=ordered) but `# journalctl -b | grep stripe` returns kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-$): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. We could stop splitting kernel headers out of the kernel package? As a user I think it would be ace if we had binary modules for those that want them but I have recently started using dkms modules again, and find it clearly superior for out of tree modules. (I maintain a couple of kernels myself, and for instance creating/updating and building nvidia packages is really somewhat of a pain). Personally I'd like to see the extramodules patching in the kernel buildscripts go away too ;) -- Joakim

Is the package JasPer in extra repo vulnerable to CVE-2016-1577, CVE-2016-2089 and CVE-2016-2116? I noticed that the version number of JasPer is same in Debian, Ubuntu and Arch, i.e. 1.900.1. Cheers Replacing the `virtualbox-host-modules' with the `virtualbox-host-dkms' package causes a "modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found in directory /lib/modules/4.4.3-1-ARCH". The whole misc (/lib/modules/4.4.3-1-ARCH/kernel/misc/) directory is missing. You need to install the `linux-headers' package for a working dkms. DKMS than can make the modules and creates the misc folder with all virtualbox *ko files. Is it possible to add the `linux-headers' package as a dependency for the `virtualbox-host-dkms' package or miss I something? Thanks Kind regards Chris

Hi everybody, I have an Alfa AWUS036H USB Wifi adapter (Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter). It's using rt2800usb driver. I use netctl to connect to wifi.Here is my netctl profile: Description='Mine' Interface=wlp0s18f2u4 Connection=wireless Security=none ESSID=ncepu-student IP=static Address='10.110.7.7/24' Gateway='10.110.7.254' DNS=("8.8.8.8";"8.8.4.4") The problem is that 'ip addr show' says that I'm still connected to my wifi AP. I can see my IP and everything but I can't access internet. I can't even ping google or any other server. When I try to curl a local LAN web server, it says 'there is no route to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is my local router. So I have to disconnect and reconnect every few minutes to use internet. I read somewhere that netctl and dhcp don't work well together so I changed DHCP to static IP*. I even tried changing the wifi access points (There are multiple APs around me). In all cases, I am able to connect to the AP and use internet, but only for a few minutes. If you are have a web server facing the public internet, turn off SSLv2 immediately. OpenSSL 1.0.2g has the fix but it will take a while to drip down to the repos as it brings with it an ABI change. The vulnerability is so bad[1], it doesn't only have a CVE number, CVE-2016-0800[4], but a name and its own website: HTTPS DROWN[1][2][3]. One third of all public web servers are open to attack[2][3] and OpenSSL may not be the only crypto library affected[1][4]. All, I was interested in setting up a boot server to provide Arch install, as well as several other boot/setup options. I have existing Arch servers with ISC dhcpd, apache, vsftpd, and I've installed tftp. I have looked at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PXE https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Diskless_system Both seem to have different pieces of the puzzle. The PXE page provides examples for use of dnsmasq, darktable, and tftp. However running dnsmasq would conflict with the existing ISC dhcp service and how would xinetd know how to differential between an ftp request that should invoke tftp or vsftp? The Diskless_system page, uses existing dhcp config, but then pulls files from NFS or NBD. I've looked at dozens of ubuntu and centos pages (which is primarily what you get when you search for PXE boot setup howtos), but most are of such poor quality, it is hard to tell what the salient parts of the setup are. My confusion comes in seeing how I can continue to serve the rest of my dhcp clients and also PXE boot requests (from what I can tell, it shouldn't matter, everybody still gets an address, and those non-PXE clients should ignore the additions to dhcpd.conf -- hopefully) Additionally, all other howtos show mounting the .iso loop and then copying the files to the tftpboot location. Why bother with the copy, why not just mount the .iso loop at the proper tftpboot location? If anyone know the answer to whether the PXE config additions to dhcpd.conf will conflict with normal dhcp clients? or whether having both tftp and vsftp served by xinetd is an issue? I would appreciate your answer. I think I can take if from there. If you have any other pointers about setting up a PXE boot server with this configuration I'd appreciate that as well. All, This may be a stupid question. If so I apologize. Do I have to do anything different to boot the arch install media on a board with 4 Opteron 8360 processors (16 core total), or should the kernel just handle however many cores there are? The reason I ask is it always hangs after it says Booting Kernel (immediately after decompress). When I memtest the memory, (I have two sets and I've gone stick by stick with a minimum memory config, and I still get errors at the exact same percentage of every test.) I have rotated each stick in/out with a replacement, and replaced the whole set, but same issue. So I either have to do something different to boot with 16 core which will in turn also address the memory issue, or I have lots of bad ram or a bad mem controller in one of the processors. Hardware Info shows all cores and memory, it's just using it that is the problem :) What say the experts? Do I need to pass a kernel flag, or something similar for the 4 Opteron boot, or does it just smell like multiple failed sticks in each set? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hi I have been trying for hours but cant get mutt working. I used configuration from different forums. They all made sense but neither work. Also, the mutt package availabe in official arch repo has no debugging support so I couldn't figure out what was going wrong. After some internet research and keen eyes on mutt's on-screen logs, I found that mutt was trying to authenticate plainly. Then I learnt about authenticators. Hello everyone, I'm the creator of Obarun I use runit for PID1 and managing service. Repo is available for all package builded without systemd support. All this package have the name xxx-systemd to avoid trouble with original package. Package are maintained every week (one time per week). all this package doesn't have service declaration to allow other distro to use it like manjaro, alphaos etecetera... A github with all the pkgbuild used is available here https://github.com/Obarun + some personnal scripts A complete site is available too with forum and a little wiki here www.obarun.org Proposal an alternative to systemd on arch system isn't impossible even for complex desktop environment. KF5, XFCE4 work on it.(using consolekit for the moment) dev is managed by gentoo eudev (working with jcnelson vdev is in progress, but not working for the moment). I use my system from almost one year now and share it from july 2015. This system is not perfect (i'm not a good dev) and i'm alone to make all the stuff (site, maintaining, new features and so one) but i'm the proof that can be possible and without so much efford. Isn't the work to arch to propose an alternative. Pacman, makepkg, pkgbuild are beautiful tools which allow user to make every his want. Gday everyone, Since the last systemd update (229) I haven't been able to run my systemd user instance. I'm getting this error when I try to run "systemctl --user status": Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory Running strace reveals that it tries to connect to kdbus which isn't available on the current kernel: open("/sys/fs/kdbus/1000-user/bus", O_RDWR|O_NOCTTY|O_CLOEXEC) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I've tried disabling kdbus adding "kdbus=0" as kernel parameter but that didn't work. Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Recently I found my system(Gnome+Nvidia+bumblebee) freezes sometimes during powering off, so I checked the systemsd log, and it shows that vboxwebsrv timed out(took about a minute to be killed). I disabled vboxwebsrv, everything seems okay now. Has anyone experienced this too ? If it were a bug, I think the developers should be informed.

All, Following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Readline I was attempting to disable control echo by adding 'set echo-control-characters off' to ~/.inputrc. After logging out/in there is no change to the '^C' echo after 'ctrl+c' is pressed to terminate the present command. I even tried adding it to /etc/inputrc. Same result. Is there something else needed with the current readline? Also in this process, I noticed when I type '~' (e.g. like ~/tmp) the '~' is not echoed until the 2nd character is pressed. This is confusing. I've looked at /etc/inputrc and do not see anything that appears to suppress echo of '~' (or I was too dumb to recognize it). What is preventing the '~' from being echoed when it is typed as the first character? How do I fix it so it always is shown? (I'm using default BASH as the shell) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hello, I have a proposal for Arch Linux developers and by mailing on this list I would also appreciate feedback from non-developers that use Arch Linux. Note: I am not here to hate on the current status, nor to disapprove of current Arch choices. So, to get to the point... I would like to propose development and official support of an alternative init system and service manager. My main preference would be OpenRC + sysvinit. The combination of those two has shown to work surprisingly well even with the current Arch's binary packages which are compiled with systemd support/dependencies. There are OpenRC packages already in the AUR, as well as an unofficial repository called "openrc-eudev" that replaces udev with Gentoo's eudev. See http://systemd-free.org for more info. (Please disregard the hate on the website, I am not pro-systemd-hate) Now, I realize this is not the correct way to do this stuff, and if we want an alternative system, a lot of compiling might have to be done, Or is it possible to keep systemd support? 1. Udev... Well, there are two alternatives worth mentioning. The first is, obviously, Gentoo's eudev that works really well, and keeps udev compatibility. Another alternative worth mentioning is vdev (https://github.com/jcnelson/vdev) It is also maintained in the AUR. vdev is developed to be completely non-dependent on systemd and I think it might be a nice option to consider. Note that it is still under development. 2. Packaging... If current and furure builds are kept with systemd support, then there's only the option of including an OpenRC-compatible script in the same package, along with the systemd.service file, and then depending on what's used on the machine, install the according one (in most cases). Otherwise, new compilation will have to be done, and that brings up the issue of storage space, which, in the worst case - gets cut in half. I would need more feedback on this. 2.1. Repositories... core, extra, community and multilib would not need any -openrc offsprings. If we would build new packages, without systemd support, pacman would need code modifications to distinguish between the two - systemd and openrc. An idea is to modify the package naming scheme somehow, possibly -openrc and -systemd. 3. Support... The biggest drawback is definitely the support that goes on in ArchBBS, ArchWiki, Bugtracker and eventually #archlinux on freenode IRC. The ArchBBS and the IRC wouldn't be detriment(?) because they don't really have any *specific* support threads or sections. However, the ArchWiki would need a lot of rewriting/editing, but honestly, the community is big enough to handle it. As for the bugtracker, it might get a bit more bugs than usually :D To conclude, this is still a mere draft and a proposal. I realize that there are a lot more things to be discussed about this. Since some PKGBUILDs fetch their sources from SourceForge, it might be a good idea to switch them from using plain http:// to https://. While the certificate authority model is arguably broken when it comes to protecting against state-sponsored attacks, this will give some additional security to ensure that the sources packagers fetch and generate the hash sums from are actually the sources the project releases, and not a malicious man-in-the-middle response by some third party. Hi, I've followed the arch wiki and deployed a full disk encrypted install. Everything works fine and am able to boot properly into the install. While trying to shutdown my system, systemd displays an error which says "systemd: stopped (with error) /dev/mapper/crypt-boot". 'crypt-boot' is the device mapper name for the encrypted boot partition. Could someone explain this. Do I need to be concerned of any data loss in the boot partition? - Solomon

Hi all, With the release of Vulkan imminent, I thought I'd prepare some packages for Arch so that I can push them the minute it gets released :) I was thinking of splitting it into 4 packages: - `vulkan-loader` with everything you need to run an app compiled against Vulkan (/usr/lib/libvulkan.so*). This is what Vulkan-apps packages would `depend` on. - `vulkan-headers` with everything you need to build an app for Vulkan (/usr/include/vulkan/* & /usr/lib/pkgconfig/vulkan.pc) (depends on `-loader`) - `vulkan-sdk` with all the debugging and validation stuff from LunarG (/usr/bin/*, /usr/share/vulkan/*) (depends on `-headers` + `-loader`) - `vulkan-manpages` (self-explanatory :P) I've also made `-git` versions of all of those, except the `-sdk`: I can't make it clean enough for a PKGBUILD without heavy patching of upstream's build scripts (I'm hoping somebody fixes that soon enough, I don't have the patience to do it myself :P). Does this sound reasonable? Since those are all interconnected, should I make a single split package (like `mesa`), or separate packages? I've written them as separate packages for now, but they're all in `groups=('vulkan')` Note that Intel's open-source ICD is being merged into Mesa, and the CTS is merged into AOSP's dEQP, so there's no need to make new packages for them. I'm also ready to take on the responsibility of maintaining those packages. Should be implicit, but I thought I'd mention it, especially if they get moved to `community` :) Cheers, Eric Engeström

Hi, I'm familiar with proxy envirnoment variables such as (both lower and upper case versions): use_proxy soap_use_proxy http_proxy https_proxy ftp_proxy rsync_proxy no_proxy all_proxy Thunderbird at least pay attention to some of them, and honestly, before I haven't needed anything else. However, inside the company, I need to setup manually under TB: SOCKS Host: <...> Port: <...> As SOCKS v5. Where the socks host is the same as the other proxy hosts, but its socks port must be different than the rest. I don't use any DE, but I have some automation through bash+xinitrc which depends on how to set the env. vars, so that I only need to set on TB/FF "use system proxy settings". I've tried several possible env. vars (both lower and upper case) like: socks_proxy socks_server socks_version smtp_proxy="socks5://<proxy_host>:<port>" So far I haven't been able to get any possitive results. Does any one know how I might be able to set socks for TB through env. vars? Thanks, -- Javier

My Arch linux box keeps crashing on me. I'm using the awesome wm, and at least once every other day I have to forcibly shut down my machine. This usually happens when I am using emacs, chromium, and filezilla. What happens is my screen locks up. I can't move my mouse. None of the awesome shortcuts work. I'm unable to switch to another virtual console. What can I do in situations like this? Does Arch support a Ctl-Alt-Delete? I found this article: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Keyboard_shortcuts And I put " kernel.sysrq = 1" into /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf I've rebooted, and I still can't get it to work. I'm using an apple macbook 7,1, which is a fairly old laptop (it has 4 gigs of ram), and I can't get any of the *R*eboot *E*ven *I*f *S*ystem *U*tterly *B*roken to work. I've read the article on wikipedia about the Magic SysRq key, but I can't get any of it to work. I'm using the dvorak keyboard layout as well, but I'm not sure if that changes anything. Also I've swapped alt and control with this in my .~/xinitrc setxkbmap dvorak setxkbmap -option 'ctrl:swapcaps' Thanks, Joshua

Dear list, if I understand the offering of Amazons cloud service correctly, there, you can install an OS, say arch, on a virtualized machine and scale CPU, RAM, etc. freely up and down just as you need it. While I can to this using e.g. KVM+qemu on a single machine, I want to be able to bind together a bunch of machines such that they appear as a single big machine. Is there a way to do this? Until last week, my X setup worked fine. No special configuration needed. I have a 3rd generation Core i7 notebook with a dual monitor setup. After a recent update, everything works differently, and not for the better. Before, with a VGA monitor plugged in (with or without a second HDMI monitor), the system would boot and output the console display to both the VGA and LCD. Default X startup was to display at full screen resolution and also output to VGA and LCD. Now, no matter what, it only outputs to LCD. The xrandr command to go to dual monitor used to switch within a few seconds at most. Now, it FAILS the first time. All screens are blank. I then do a second xrandr to output only to external VGA, which succeeds. I see this output from the previous command: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig) Serial number of failed request: 39 Current serial number in output stream: 39 A third xrandr command to once again go to dual then works. However, the transition takes MUCH longer. And there are further problems. I have seen the HDMI screen occasionally blank (the VGA screen is unaffected) for many seconds, then just go back on. When the screens blank from lack of activity, the time to turn on is also much longer than the previous 1 or 2 seconds. The HDMI screen has a great deal of "flicker" (it's not actual flicker, it's horizontal lines flashing) that just doesn't stop. No X packages were updated recently. But there was a kernel update from 4.3 to 4.4. I had zero problems before. Can anyone suggest some fixes? Would be much appreciated.

Hi, As I was not able to fing a CWM (clock work mode) recovery image, neither a TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) recovery image for Huawei SnapTo, I'm planning on building CWM for that phone on Arch. I was looking at [1], so to have an idea of what packages I needed to install, but [1] doesn't focus on building CWM/TWRP, besides I couldn't notice how the sdk and others under [2] were sourced, or included into PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, etc. So I have already installed: android-tools android-sdk android-sdk-platform-tools android-sdk-build-tools android-platform And several other android build requirements, except for ncurses5-compat-libs and lib32-ncurses5-compat-libs (not planning to install them unless strictly necessary). However searching I found [3], which in turns indicate one should do: export PATH="/opt/android-build:/opt/jdk1.6.0_45/bin:$PATH" But then it also indicates: . build/envsetup.sh lunch cyanogen_cooperve-eng make clean Which I'd guess those are the initial cyanogen build steps, and depend on the cynogenmod sources being downloaded there. However I'm still missing how to build CWM/TWRP recovery images for that particular phone model. If anyone has pointers to where one can read how to build such images for any phone model (being able to specify the one for which it's to be built), or huawei snapto in particular, then that'd be great. Or if anyone can include instructions on how to build such images, then that'd be also great. Dear list, I have a router which automatically identifies the devices connected to it by their host name (its a FritzBox if that matters). However, this does not work for all my arch-boxes. Thus, I get the feeling, I am missing something in my network configuration. Usually, I edit /etc/hostname by putting just the hostname in there. There is also the tool hostnamectl set-hostname myhostname which does the same. The arch wiki says, that the file also may contain the domain, if any. How do I set a hostname with domain? Is it just hostnamectl set-hostname myhostname.domain Then, the arch wiki says, that it is a good idea to add the hostname as alias for localhost in /etc/hosts. Do you do that? And last, which piece of information determines the computers name in the network. Is it the hostname in /etc/hostname, or more likely the aliases in /etc/hosts? It all started with one thread on the BBS titled "No POST after rm -rf /". After reading about the issue, I went into archivist mode and made a small writeup for myself detailing how to remount efivars as ro. Hi, as far as I understood, there's a conflict between "unknown-horizons" and current version of fife. However, the game refuses to start, so I want to re-install it, respectively replace it by the git version. Using "pacman -Rssd" (also using only one "s"), optional dependencies of other packages are removed, too (e.g. "boost" for "ogre"), but without any "s", no dependencies are removed. 1. As I don't remember, which package has installed "ogre" probably as a dependency, I'd like to know that. Using "-Qo" it seems only to be possible to get the owners of files - how can I view the "parent" or "owner package" of a package? 2. How can I exclude optional dependencies from removal? Most systemd user accounts are present in the /etc/passwd file provided by the filesystem package. This is not the case for only two of them, namely systemd-journal-upload and systemd-journal-remote, which are set up by systemd-sysusers, executed when the systemd package is installed. Hello, I'm currently developing a usermode input driver using uinput. While doing this, I've found some "ugly" behaviour. If I do getfacl from my regular user, I get: $ getfacl /dev/uinput getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/uinput # owner: root # group: root user::rw- user:manuel:rw- group::--- mask::rw- other::--- So for whatever reason my user is able to launch a usermode input driver. No root permission needed. But in fact the driver isn't even loaded (no uinput module). But it is loaded as soon as I try to access the device. After that, I have: $ getfacl /dev/uinput getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/uinput # owner: root # group: root user::rw- user:manuel:rw- #effective:--- group::--- mask::--- other::--- So somehow the permission is still there, but no longer effective??? If I switch VT once (and probably switching the active session this way) I have permission again and now my user keeps it. What is causing this ugly behaviour? Why does a user have to have uinput permissions at all? The (possible security) problem with this is, that the driver (may be a simulated keyboard driver) keeps active even if the session changes. Hi all, now with hooks newly introduced to pacman, are there already some useful btrfs and/or snapper hooks available? At least a quick look-around in the forums and with Google hasn't revealed anything yet. Maybe I'm getting something wrong here, but in my understanding it should be doable and probably is even a cool feature that other distros / package managers already provide. Basically all we have to do is to create a snapshot before and after each pacman invocation. However, after having a look at the alpm-hooks(5) man page I'm not too sure what kind of trigger would make the most sense here. With the "recommended" btrfs / snapper subvolume layout, one could add triggers for paths that should be backed up (e.g. /, /var/, etc.). On the other hand the man page tells us that using the root directory as trigger path is not recommended. So has anyone already looked into this and has some thoughts on this? Hi. Firefox 44.0 does not seem to allow installing the firefox-adblock-plus addon package from the Arch community repository. Instead, Firefox states that it only allows addons "signed" by Mozilla to be installed. That seems to exclude the package mentioned. I could install the adblock-plus addon version available from Mozilla, directly through Firefox. But is this okay, or a bad idea, or is there a better idea? Any opinions?

[arch-general] Chromium Favorites Bar Partially Inoperative

Hello all: I just installed Chromium, v. 48.0.2564.97, two days ago. I imported my bookmarks from Firefox and enabled the bookmarks bar. I added a few new bookmarks to the bar, but not in my existing folders. Today, I tried to drag-and-drop the bookmarks into the folders on my bookmarks bar, but nothing happened - the bookmarks just remained on the bar. In addition, it seems impossible to move anything on the bar, i.e., adjusting the order of folders or bookmarks. Everything just stays where it was originally placed. For those who don't use Chromium, this is not normal behavior - one should be able to drag-and-drop into folders, subfolders, and slide things around at will. In fact, even in the bookmark manager it is not possible to drag-and-drop; the only way I've found to move a bookmark into a folder is to copy and paste it there, then delete the original. I've tried disabling my two extensions without luck, and I see no recent activity on the boards or on Chromium's bug tracker. Anyone else seeing this? Any suggestions?

Hi, Just updated Arch, and got FF 44, but there's a new color behavior on the bookmark toolbar, the extensions area, and current tab. It looks like if everything was somehow selected, light grayed. This is new, but I don't know if it's the new 44+ expected behavior, or something that got broken, and perhaps there's a way to work it around. hello, thought i'd ask here first, in case it's a distro problem. was wondering if we can use systemd to start and stop a daemon for testing purposes during development. meaning, i would like to not have to "install" my daemon nor its systemd service file, and instead run all from the working directory. from systemd.unit man page i got the impression that this example would work: ❱ tree $PWD /data/projects/hmm └── systemd └── user └── foobar.service ❱ cat systemd/user/foobar.service [Unit] Description=Foo Bar [Service] ExecStart=/usr/bin/sleep 42 ❱ XDG_CONFIG_HOME=$PWD systemctl --user start foobar Failed to start foobar.service: Unit foobar.service failed to load: No such file or directory. am i doing it wrong, or? IMHO, the mailing lists rules, etiquette, best practices, how to report a security issue through proper channels, etc would be nice to have on the wiki or on lists.archlinux.org. The description for arch-security will probably need to be updated there too. Otherwise, people may get chatised for things that aren't documented in the expected places.

Hi I installed linux-grsec kernel on my Arch system a few days back for improved security. My next step is to sandbox internet-facing applications such as firefox, thunderbird, torrent client, etc. However, it seems like grsecurity patchset doesn't have application sandboxing capability (Does it? Couldn't find it in docs or forums). In the past, I used Apparmor on Ubuntu for basic sandboxing. I tried installing it on linux-grsec kernel but it seems like the necessary kernel options required for installing Apparmor are disabled on linux-grsec kernel. The kernel options required by Apparmor on Arch are [1]: CONFIG_SECURITY_APPARMOR=y CONFIG_SECURITY_APPARMOR_BOOTPARAM_VALUE=1 CONFIG_DEFAULT_SECURITY_APPARMOR=y CONFIG_AUDIT=y While my linux-grsec kernel's configuration reports: # CONFIG_SECURITY_APPARMOR is not set I think I could enable the required options by recompiling the linux-grsec kernel but it seems like the grsecurity team now provides the stable patches only to commercial customers [2], so I believe I won't be able to recompile the kernel myself (Perhaps I'm wrong?). I was hoping someone here would be able to help me install Apparmor on linux-grsec kernel or atleast point me in the right direction. Hi, since I won't get an answer on the forum except "Read the Wiki" which isn't helpful, I ask here. Is here anybody with real world experiences with SELinux on Arch? The forum states the userland tools as "work in progress" which doesn't say anything about the progress… I'd like to know how easy SELinux is to use on Arch. I am just starting out to (re-)enabling it on my CentOS-servers and there it is actually not that hard after all nowadays because of the great tools available. But how about Arch? Niels

[arch-general] Clarification on pacman signature verification

Hi, This is regarding package verification performed by pacman. Does pacman download the .sig file of a package while installing one? All I could find are the local cached copies of packages only but not their signatures. If thats the case, how does pacman verify the integrity of the downloaded package? It could be that .sig file could have been downloaded into /tmp during installation or to another location that I'm not aware yet. This brings me to my next point. I've manually downloaded just the package file (of some random package) from a mirror and disconnected from the Internet. I used both 'pacman -U <pkg-name>' and 'pacman -S <pkg-name>' to install the package and the installation went just fine. I was expecting Pacman to emit an error stating that signature was missing but nothing happened. Could someone care to explain this. BTW, I have SigLevel = Required DatabaseOptional in my pacman.conf. - Solomon

Hi, I opened FS#47893 [1] to discuss this issue, but it's been closed with no delay and I can't really have a discussion via re-opening requests. Upon installation of the tor package, directory /var/lib/tor is created (see PKGBUILD#40 [2]). What I asked in FS#47893 was to add a post_uninstall() hook to remove tor user (e.g. with `userdel tor`), so that **if /var/lib/tor has been deleted automatically** because it was empty, pwck doesn't trip on home dir verification. Note that if /var/lib/tor isn't empty, `userdel tor` would merely remove the user entry and not delete its home directory (-r switch). Therefore, no data loss. Moreover, I believe it is possible to condition user deletion on directory existence (e.g. `if [ ! -e /var/lib/tor ]; then userdel tor; else :`), so that could do it too. Reason for closing was "Not a bug / So fix it. This isn't something that can be dealt with automatically". I fail to see how it is so, but if I'm wrong please tell me so and why. [arch-general] Mounting root according to fstab the first time (fstab in initrd)?

Hi! My concern is that there are a few mount flags which can not be changed with a remount (at least on some FSes such as btrfs). Now as far as I understand, the kernel mounts root RO after boot using the root and rootflags parameters. I also found that you can include /etc/fstab in the initrd. How can I convince the kernel to mount every volume including the root according to fstab instead of the kernel paramters? In case the kernel isn't the one which reads fstab (which I suspect), can I include some binary in the initrd that would read fstab and handle the mounting for me? Or should I just scrap the whole above idea and write something that'll a) read the root volume's options from fstab and put it on the cmdline through e.g. a grub-mkconfig script? Thanks in advance! I want to timer a simple backup of part of my system with rsync. The partition I want to use for backup is on an external USB drive. First, about the userspace tools and library (libselinux, setools...) and the programs which need to be recompiled with SELinux support, there are AUR packages which are working (I am not aware of any bug right now, and am using them on my systems). I have been working on making the install process easier for a few years and as there can be some difficulties (like the build-time circular dependency between util-linux and systemd, which is not a bug according to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/39767) I recently published an install script which builds and installs all SELinux packages (build_and_install_all.sh in https://github.com/archlinuxhardened/selinux) You may be interested in using it to get SELinux on Arch. Then, about the policy, there is currently no publicly-available policy for Arch Linux, unlike Gentoo, Debian, Fedora and CentOS. For those on the ML which are not familiar with SELinux but who know firewall configuration, SELinux is like a firewall for applications and "a SELinux policy" is a set of rules to filter accesses in a way which is similar to iptables rules filtering network communications. There is an "upstream" (reference) policy, from Tresys Technologies ( https://github.com/TresysTechnology/refpolicy) which is used by Debian and Gentoo (not by Fedora). I am currently working on bringing Arch Linux support into refpolicy, and this work is still in progress. For example refpolicy did not have systemd support before its last release (which happened in December), and now there are still issues with partially-supported systemd services. I recently updated selinux-refpolicy-arch AUR packages with some commits from my personal policy which I'll submit upstream ( https://github.com/archlinuxhardened/selinux-policy-arch/commits/2.20151208) but it is still not complete for a "base system". By the way, if anyone wants to take a look at what looks like Arch Linux with SELinux, for example in a virtual machine, it is possible to create a Vagrant VM by following the instructions on https://github.com/archlinuxhardened/selinux/tree/master/_vagrant and then play in a "vagrant ssh" session. Finally, for the reasons why SELinux is not integrated to Arch Linux like Debian (i.e. compiled without being activated by default, contrary to CentOS and Fedora where SELinux is enabled by default), I believe the three main points are: * support of audit in the kernel (currently there is an annoying bug in chromium seccomp filters which spams the logs when audit is enabled, https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=456535) * LSM support in the kernel (e.g. https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/37578 , which is more detailed than https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31448) * and package management (libsepol, libselinux and libsemanage would need to be added to core repository and thus maintained by Arch devs). I do not see anything today which would lead to the solving of any of these issues in the short run, so I maintain packages in the AUR and continue working on the policy. If you feels like helping this work, feel free to submit pull requests on GitHub (or submit patches upstream). Nicolas PS : for the record, I am running a kernel with both SELinux and grsec (without RBAC) on my systems. These two security systems target different things and it is possible to use both.

Hello all I had no internet for 3 weeks after moving and I Just updated for the first time again. Pacman now tells me that xf86-input-libinput and xorg-server are in confict and wants to remove xorg-server. I use xorg-server not wayland, so I dont think that is a good idea. I tried removing xf86-input-libinput with pacman -Rdd xf86-input-libinput but that results in: target not found. How can there be a conflict if xf86-input-libinput isnt there? Regards Patrick

Steps to reproduce: Update python-setuptools to 1:19.3-1 and use youtube-dl. I read about the linux EVO 800-series TRIM bug a few months ago: https://blog.algolia.com/when-solid-state-drives-are-not-that-solid/ However it appeared to have been fixed in the 4.1 kernel release: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/9a9324d3969678d44b330e1230ad2c8ae6… However a few days ago, my root partition suddenly became corrupted and I was forced to reinstall. While I cannot be 100% certain it was this bug, it seems likely. Has it been confirmed that this bug has been fixed in Arch? If so, at which kernel version? Thanks, Andrew

Hi everybody I spent days trying to get my Alfa AWUS036H work with Wireshark on Arch Linux. It captured all sorts of fancy protocols, but no tcp. I booted Kali linux on the same PC and followed the same procedure for data capture and this time everything worked. I could see http requests to multiple wifi access points nearby. After some more googleing, I think the problem is with the rt2800usb driver on arch. I read somewhere that kali comes with a 'modified' wifi driver for capturing tcp data. I was wondering if its possible to somehow get kali's driver working on arch? any help would be appreciated! Regards

Dear list, right now, I run a home movie theater setup under arch linux on an arm device. While I really appreciate the low power consumption and the small form factors of arm (developer) boards, for me, arm also comes with a much larger maintenance burden than standard x86 hardware. Thus, I search for a platform which is x86 and well suited for a home theater setup. While browsing the internet, I go the feeling, that the Intel Atom series might be a good way to go. In particular, here is what I aim for: - standard boot process. No uboot. - standard cpu such that I can relay on standard arch repos and community - a graphics chip for which drivers are officially available, such as integrated intel graphics - low power consumption - some sort of internet connectivity, preferable cabled, but wifi would also be ok. - usb, but nothing fancy, only for keyboard Software wise, the hardware should be able to allow for browsing the internet and to deliver video and audio fluently. The interface I am targeting is kodi. Since I have no experience with low-powered x86 hardware such as the Intel Atom chips, I kindly ask for your experience and opinions on the topic. Good evening all, I was just watching Linux Sucks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pOxlazS3zs) on Youtube when my system froze. It was the whole system, I could for example not switch to a TTY. The audio was looping a one second thing. My troubleshooting skills are no pride to me, so I though I could just ask you for help. These are the last entries in the journal (in reverse). Did my system just crash because of a DHCP request? Or should I focus on the kwin error, which is the very last one? All, Reading the notes on archlinux.org, I see a number of the php sub-packages (php-pear, php-mssql, php-ldap, etc.) have been removed. What will provide the continued functionality that those packages provide. Specifically pear is a requirement for eGroupWare. The link to the php 7 migration guide doesn't address anything related to pear itself. Is pear functionality provided by default in php 7? Hello, Are there plans to package a version of Firefox 44 that lets you disable extension signature checking? Background: Firefox is shipping with signature checking for addons. Right now (in Firefox 43), there is an option to disable it if you need to use an unsigned addon. However, that option is being removed in Firefox 44. [0] Signature checking itself is actually a very good concept. However, the way Mozilla has implemented it in Firefox (imho) is not. Every extension must be signed by Mozilla, and only Mozilla, creating a walled garden. From my understanding, there will be no way to override this extension check unless you recompile Firefox and build an unbranded version. Personally, I think this mechanism goes against the Arch Linux tenet of user centrality [1]. As a user, you should ultimately be allowed to decide what you want to install on your system. Also, how are you supposed to build your own extensions or test someone else's extension on Firefox stable? Fedora recently discussed the possibility of packaging an "unofficial" Firefox [2]. (Take a look at their bugtracker for some good points.) Is an abrowser package with the ability to disable extension signing warranted? I am posting to this mailing list because I have not seen much discussion about Firefox extension signing in the Arch Linux world. Developers, what are your thoughts? Summary: Why is there no audio in the spice viewer if PulseAudio is not running? I have been battling muted audio in virt-manager for some time. I finally figured out that it is really a spice viewer problem (spicy) rather than a QEMU problem. The problem is that spicy does not output any audio unless I have PulseAudio setup and running. If I attempt to run spicy from a terminal and connect to a VM (running Fedora 23), I get warnings like the following when I am not running PulseAudio: GSpice-WARNING **: PulseAudio context failed Connection refused GSpice-WARNING **: pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused And there is no sound. If I launch PulseAudio and try again, there is sound. It looks like at one point the '--with-audio=gstreamer' configure parameter was added to spice-gtk3 [0]. However, it was reverted a few weeks later [1]. So, I have a couple questions: - Why was the reversion necessary? There is a forum post on that bug where someone has the complete opposite problem I am having. - Is there some way to make spicy output sound without PulseAudio as a dependency? I have filed a bug on spicy's bugtracker [2], and a developer claims that by switching '--with-audio' to gstreamer, it is possible to make sound output work on both PulseAudio and plain ALSA. I have tried recompiling with '--with-audio=gstreamer', but I was not able to get sound output in plain ALSA. Has anyone had success recompiling with '--with-audio=gstreamer'? Hello. I am running Arch 64-bit, with the Cinnamon desktop environment. When I install an application program, it does not show up in the Cinnamon main menu until I restart Cinnamon. Then, there it is. Is this a known bug, or is it a "feature"? And is there a way to fix it so that added programs show up in the menu without restarting Cinnamon?

Fully updated from testing repo. Since update to plasma 5.5 I am getting periodic crashes of plasmashell -trace back below. Seems to be connected with dri/swrast_dri.so. i915 graphics so not sure why swrast_dri is called - but then again not sure what that does exactly (sounds like software rendering). hello. Per the Arch wiki SSD page, I just enabled sysctl fstrim.timer, and then rebooted. I did not "enable" fstab.service. Now fstrim.timer is loaded, and active (but "waiting") and fstrim.service is loaded, but inactive. And the time stamp file the wiki mentions has a "0" size. So, do I have to wait (A WEEK!) to see if it works, or can I somehow now run fstrim.service manually to at least get it done once? Note: I could just add "discard" to /etc/fstab, but wouldn't that wear out the SSD faster than periodic trimming? And yes, my SSD does support trimming.

Hello to all I'm using Arch Linux in a SuperMicro A1SAi-2750F motherboard and I'm having performance issues while bridging 3 Ethernet Gigabit network interfaces. The 4th network interface of that motherboard, is used to connect to the ISP. This setup is my Router/server and I use the 3 bridged interfaces to connect my home network. But now, I'm noticing severe performance issues. I conducted a small iperf3 test. Is it possible to compile samba with clustering support in arch. I've tested it with the PKGBUILD for samba. And I only need to add --with-cluster-support in the ./configure part. As I was building an AUR package[0], I had an issue with validating the key. I run: $ gpg --rec-keys PkgKey only to get an error about dirmngr not being able to connect to ~/.config/gnupg/S.dirmngr $GNUPGHOME is set in my env. After hours of reading similar issues, but usually running such command as root, I couldn't find any clear answer. I tried to understand how dirmngr worked, the sockets, and the whole process. I got the answer running on one shell $ dirmngr --debug-level expert --server and the above command in another one. The culprit was in fact my gnupd home dire files set as mod 600. Settings the files as 700 solved the issue. Now I am wondering a few things: - man dirmngr says running in daemon mode is depreciated. But grepping the process, I see: 289:root 27509 1 0 09:12 ? 00:00:01 dirmngr --daemon --homedir /etc/pacman.d/gnupg What starts this daemon (a previous gpg command ran as root?)? How to change the way it is run from daemon to server mode? - the sockets directory (root one in /root/.gnupg/ and user one in ~./config/gnupg/) do not seem to me the best place. Something under /run would be more appropriate. I can not find any doc on how to set the socket in another place. Same can be said for socket S.pgp-agent. In fact, for root, this socket is in two places: /etc/pacman.d/gnupg and /root/.gnupg. I am not sure having /root/.gnupg is a good option. Is there any way to change all these behaviors via any config files ? If no, I am thinking of writing systemd service + socket files. Thank you for any tips and thoughts. Hi all, Has anybody got plasma 5.5 under wayland working? I have weston working which I can launch from sddm. So hardware is not a problem I suppose. Hello, today, I tried to update my laptop to KDE 5.5. The first problem, I've found, is, that it seems to be impossible to configure SDDM. The option is there in "System Settings", but nothing opens. Then, I connected my TV screen to the HDMI port of my laptop and tried dual-screen setup. At first this seemed to work well, but for some reason *every* window now opens on my TV. The laptop screen was set to be default, so this is not the reason. I configured the laptop screen to be turned off when the lid is closed. If I do this, then the laptop screen keeps black if the lid is opened again. If I lock the screen in this case and unlock after that, then the screen turns on, but the taskbar seems to be crashed. This is just a short list of bugs, I found, before uninstalling Plasma 5. Does someone here have similar problems? As KDE 4 also had many bugs, I learned to deal with, as they never got fixed, and KDE 5 doesn't seem to be much better, I now give Gnome a try... Manuel

The only action I could remember that could have had anything to do with this was an upgrade of wpa_supplicant, so I googled and found [0]. However, unlike the commenters on that bug, it still didn't work after downgrading wpa_supplicant. Did anyone else experience anything similar? I'm using intel network hardware. You can easily search the bug tracker[1] yourself, and help out with bugs in packages you are familiar with. Maintaining packages is usually not very time-intensive for the maintainers. In other cases maintaining such configurations may be the trouble as you have to remember what aur packages depend on your library. Another question: what about modifying aur/abs pkgbuilds, like I replace the whole configure line because I want to do so, but to do such a configuration for a new version of the package, I have to manually modify any new pkgbuild I get to get the same result. How to make it nicer?

Salutations, I am trying to get Arch Linux to install on my Alienware machine, but I am having a bit of bad luck. First and foremost, I can't get sound to work with the Talking Arch distribution, which is basically the Arch live CD with espeakup and brltty installed. I did not have any luck with alsactl init. Secondly, does Wi-Fi-menu use AES out of the box, or will I have to write a handwritten config for the university Wi-Fi___33? And finally, are there kernel modules for the Killer Wi-Fi___33 drivers? As far as I remember, it has been part of the qemu package, but now it seems to be gone and even pkgfile can't find it. Does anybody know what happened? Does anyone here have experience troubleshooting KVM installs in arch? I am using virsh and virt-manager, the VM seems to successfully boot, but the virtualization window is only showing a black screen with a cursor in the top left of the window. (on the host) journelctl -xe only shows one related error: "libvirtd[298]: this function is not supported by the connection driver: virConnectGetCPUModuleNames" If it helps: the ISO I am trying to boot from is the live disk that comes with "Hacking: The Art of Exploitation" Thanks in advance.

I just upgraded my archlinux system and with it I upgraded systemd from version 227-1 to 228-3. Now when the system reboots I get stuck at a start job running “Create Volatile Files and Directories” and since it looks as if there is no timeout limit my system just sits there trying to run this service. I’ve checked my /var partition and it is mounted with the acl option and it looks as if the /var/log/journal directory does have all attributes. Any suggestions? Thanks. -- Michael Dahlberg

In the BIOS make sure that UEFI is enabled with CSM 4. When starting the Ubuntu installation you have to add the kernel option "libata.force=noncq". This is a MUST! 5. After the installation do a full update on Ubuntu. Then you can remove the kernel option "libata.force=noncq". Your SSD should perform faster now. But SpeedStep is still a problem. Hello, I use a custom kernel and nvidia-dkms, but tested this with the regular kernel and nvidia package, and get precisely the same problem(s). As such, I'm going to try anything with DKMS and the custom kernel, so I don't need to be switching back and forth and rebooting all the time. After updating my system, I get a blank screen when I start the X. Normally (before the update, and in my current state), I see the first few lines of output of startx, the screen turning on and off (because of modesetting), and then my .xinitrc getting executed. However, with the latest Xorg and nVidia versions, I see the first few lines, and then X appears to freeze. I can switch to another tty and check that it executed my .xinitrc and my WM is running, but if I switch back, I just see a frozen image of whatever I was looking at before switching to the terminal running the X. In fact, if when it starts I do <Meta-Shift-Enter>touch x-works<Ctrl-D><Meta-Shift-Q> it does create a file called x-works and exit normally. A log of this is available as Xorg.18.log (attached). I'm not very knowledgeable about the X, but it seems to me it is related to this part of the log: [ 5167.048] (II) modeset(1): using drv /dev/dri/card0 [ 5167.048] (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section. [ 5167.048] (II) UnloadModule: "modesetting" while in Xorg.17.log (attached), it does its job. Here's the combinations of up/down-grading I tried after I got the blank screen. The versions I had before the update were 355 and 17 and graphical acceleration did work, but trying now, it doesn't (tried with glxgears). Also, to downgrade xorg-server I also needed to downgrade xf86-input-evdev and xf86-video-intel. I always remembered to recompile the nvidia module with DKMS. Xorg versions 1.17 1.18 nVidia 355 No accel nVidia complaint about X version, crash versions 358 OK Blank screen $ lspci |grep 3D 04:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 840M] (rev a2) I have also mangled with nvidia-xconfig, but it only made things that were working not work, or had no visible effect. My xorg.conf is also attached. I'm curious as to why the 358-1.17 combo works, and latest doesn't, and why the 355-1.17 combo used to work, and now works but glxgears doesn't work with it. I'm really glad st is now in community, though I find it slightly odd its orphaned even though it's just been moved. Anyway, on the upgrade my terminal would not start, and I tracked that down to the default config.h setting termname to 'st-256color' Changing that to 'stterm-256color' means it doesn't crash on startup anymore. It's because I start tmux automatically in terminal. The problem with 'st' is that the name is nigh-on un-google-able... anyone else knows about this issue or has hit it before?

(20/24) upgrading virtualbox-host-modules [----------------------------------] 100% cat: /usr/lib/modules/extramodules-4.3-ARCH/version: No such file or directory It seems like these are looking for Linux 4.3, but the linux package in [core] is still at 4.2. I'm afraid if I'll reboot, there will be problems with the graphics driver. Why wasn't the linux package updated alongside these others? Or am I wrong, and is this harmless?

Hi, After recent update I have problems in HTML5 movie playback. In Chromium, films on YouTube are buffered but don't want to start at all. Pressing play/pause has no effect. I can manually move playback to different time but this only causes new frame to show without playback. In firefox I can play video, switch on another one but I cannot reload page - firefox freezes completely. System updated with pacman 16.11.2015. Anyone seeing similar things? Regards, Łukasz

All, Less than 90 days ago I went through a server rebuild and at the time there were 3 options listed in the PHP wiki for using PHP (the normal php package) with apache: libphp5.so apache2-mpm-worker and mod_fcgid php-fpm and mod_proxy_fcgi (see original thread from 8/25/15 titled: "PHP - libphp5.so, OR php-fpm and mod_proxy_fcgi, OR php5 with apache2-mpm-worker and mod_fcgid") I initially installed with libphp5.so, and all worked well. I was going to investigate the other two over the holidays, but returning to the wiki today I find none of those remain recommended configurations. Instead, now the wiki only recommends a configuration for Zend Core + Apache which includes: Install mod_fcgid (the official one sucks) Install Zend Core (official PHP distribution) Uninstall the php package ^^^^^^^^^ Where the confusion lies, is there are no longer *any* suggested configurations for plain PHP (from the traditional php package) and Apache? Does this mean that the combination of plain php and apache is no longer recommended/supported on Arch or has the earlier content of wiki just been deleted for some other reason? Are the other configurations for using the normal php package with apache still fine, but will no longer be mentioned in the arch wiki? I try to stick with the way arch recommends doing/configuring packages as stated in the arch wiki, but it just seems like the current PHP wiki page has either had relevant information unintentionally deleted, or the entire way apache/php has been used in the past is undergoing a radical change. Hello everyone, This is my first post here, hope I'm doing it allright:) I have an encrypted setup with both / and home encrypted, on two different partitions with plain LUKS, so no LVM, RAID, etc.. Since my last Arch update I have a strange issue: during shutdown, I get the following error message: systemd[1]: Stopped (with error) /dev/mapper/home_crypt. Due to a hint on #archlinux, I've changed the specification of the encrypted home_partition in my /etc/fstab from "UUID=..." to "/dev/mapper/home_crypt", and this indeed removed the error message during shutdown. Before the update, everything went fine - with UUID in my /etc/fstab. I've just updated a sligtly neglected machine I have (not upgraded since mid-September). Thanks to the [ARA][1] I managed to upgrade it in weekly steps. It all seemed to work fine, and indeed it boots just fine. There's only one little thing that's broken: the mouse buttons don't work. Yes, it's really only the mouse buttons that don't work. I can move the pointer using the mouse. I can scroll using the scroll wheel. Starting `xev` I thought I'd have a look at what actually happens: 1. Start `xev`. 2. Move the pointer into the window -> the various events scroll by in the terminal. 3. Press the left mouse button -> no event printed in the terminal. 4. Move the pointer in the window -> no events are printed in the terminal. 5. Change focus to another window using Ctrl-Tab, change back -> movements in the `xev` window once again generate events. I've tried searching for a solution, but I can't find anything resembling this. Hi list, I ran pacman -Syu on one of my LXC containers running Arch and subsequently could not log on to it using lxc-console. The login screen would appear at first but the credentials entry was messed up. Every time I enter my credentials, I get back a login prompt, and several times the password entry would not even be obfuscated but show the typed text. At any rate, no matter how often I would try to login, it would fail. What's the policy about capabilities for executables in Arch packages? I'm asking since in my setup I'm running wpa_supplicant as the 'nobody' user, but I let it keep the NET_ADMIN and NET_RAW capabilities (excerpt from the .service file): User=nobody SupplementaryGroups=rfkill CapabilityBoundingSet=CAP_NET_ADMIN CAP_NET_RAW The executable needs to have those capabilities on the executable in order to keep them when switching to user `nobody`, so I set them with: setcap 'cap_net_raw=ep cap_net_admin=ep' /usr/bin/wpa_supplicant I'd suggest (and send a patch) to add these capabilities in the next update to the package if that's acceptable. PS. wpa_supplicant is still not updated from version 2.3 which doesn't work with the wifi interface in the 4addr mode, bridged and with the -b option of wpa_supplicant. 2.4 and 2.5 work in that scenario. so I hope an update is due. -- damjan

Is there an intention to update this package straight to 2.1, or to introduce a gsl2 package? Hi all, I've built several machines by installing Arch from scratch. Recently, I built a Linode VM using their Arch image, dated 2015-08. From there, I did a normal `pacman -Syu` to update the system. My problem is probably trivial, annoying, and I haven't been able to figure it out. I'm hoping someone can give me a hint on where to look. I've been through the post-install docs and can't figure out what might be causing this. The machine I'm on is running xfce and I'm using xfce4-terminal 0.6.3. If I do something like `systemctl status`, I see output that is mostly ascii characters: * on the first line next to the name of the host, pipe (|) next to each line in the CGroup. If I ssh into another local machine, I see the same thing. My problem is on the Linode box. When I ssh there and run the same command, I'm seeing garbage where I see pipes next to each line in the CGroup output. I don't know if this is going to paste properly, but I'll try: Local: CGroup: / |-init.scope Linode: CGroup: / ââinit.scope On the linode box, those 2 characters actually occupy 6 characters in the output and the last 5 characters are each drawn in a box and overwrite the first character of the process name. All the characters appear as "garbage." What's really strange is that the output from `top` is fine, and that appears to use some graphics and color. Has anyone seen something like this? All sessions have the same TERM variable (xterm). This is an area of any Linux I've never spent much time. It always just worked out-of-the-box (for any distro I've ever used). The only thing I can think of at this point is to try and diff the two systems' /etc directories and see if I can track it down that way. Maybe that's next. TIA, Dave

[arch-general] systemd-networkd and netctl with multiple interfaces

Hello! I installed Arch on my new Thinkpad T450s over the weekend. Everything works well, but I have a question: I use systemd-networkd to manage my network interfaces and netctl for the connections. I set everything up according to (this)[0] and (this)[1] to get automatic activation of wifi via netctl-auto and netctl-ifplugd. My question is as follows: I use i3wm, and i3status shows *both* ethernet and wifi as connected if I plug in the cable while having a wifi connection. What does this mean exactly, and how is my traffic routed? Thanks in advance for clearing that up. The idea is that if none of the routes match the destination, the default route is used. If there multiple of them... well, nobody can tell you what happens. Usually the kernel chooses the route with the lower metric (to "break the tie"), but I cannot tell you exactly what it signifies. I'd suggest to try to find out why netctl makes it possible to have multiple default routes (however, as I don't use netctl, I'm not able to answer this), as this is usually a bad idea. Hi, I've been using plain fluxbox, rather than any DE, for several years now. I use dunst for libnotify server BTW... However now a days there's an application "hpmyroom" [1], based on QT for linux, which dies any time there's an interactive popup. For example deleting a buddy will pop up a dialog to ask whether you want to confirm or not. Or when someone sends a buddy request, a dialog pops up to confirm whether to accept it or not. When using plain fluxbox, "hpmyroom" immediately dies with a segmentation fault, when such popups are suppose to happen (nothing pops up actually). Other guys using Arch were not having problems, but they were using DEs like XFCE, Gnome, KDE and others. So I tried LXDE, but using fluxbox instead of openbox. To my surprise, that worked out. Same fluxbox, just on top LXDE. Problem is that I don't really want to be running a DE. I was exploring what would LXDE be providing that I'm not using on plain fluxbox with no DE, but couldn't find what it might be. As mentioned, I was already using a libnotify server, dunst. I changed it for others like "xfce4-notifyd" and "notification-daemon", which made no difference. So I discarded a libnotify issue. Then the other thing that came to mind, though more relunctantly was graphics polkit. So I called "lxpolkit" (part of lxsession from LXDE) on the .xinitrc, prior to calling "startfluxbox", but that didn't help either. So, as I suspected initially, that didn't seem like it. Arch handles dbus through xinit, when calling "startx" or using "xdm", but then just in case I tried manually: systemctl --user import-environment DISPLAY XAUTHORITY dbus-update-activation-environment DISPLAY XAUTHORITY As expected, that didn't help a bit... Hi, To enable the Xorg compositing extension with plain fluxbox (no DE), and be able to use true transparency, I'm using compton (I've used xcompmgr with worse results), but I experience some problems: 1.- At times, though fluxbox is still up and running, it stops managing the non GTK/QT applications, such xterm or rxvt-unicode. The only way to get fluxbox to start controlling them again is through a fluxbox restart. 2.- At times, when restarting fluxbox due to [1], the X session dies, and a new login is required. As I said, with xcompmgr the problems show up more often, both [1] and [2]. That's why I keep using compton. Any idea on how to avoid these problems? In case, I'm calling compton in my ~/.xinitrc, prior to calling startfluxbox, like this: compton -bc -o 0.22 -m 0.88 & I'm not having any particular Xorg configuration to enable compositing. Some fluxbox setting to take advantage of transparency: session.screen0.menu.alpha: 210 session.screen0.slit.alpha: 210 session.screen0.window.unfocus.alpha: 215 session.screen0.toolbar.alpha: 210 For rxvt-unicode: URxvt*.depth: 32 URxvt*.background: [88]#000000 And for conky: own_window_argb_visual = true, own_window_transparent = true, Don't think those settings will help anything, but just in case... I'm working on install and hook files for mkinitcpio and I'm adding some modules to the initramfs image with the install file. My problem is that the modules I add with the install file get removed when the autodetect hook runs. Is there any way to keep some modules when the autodetect hook runs as if they were defined in the MODULES array in mkinitcpio.conf? I know I'm seeing the expected behavior but I need some modules to be included in the initramfs even if they are not in use in the running system, and it would be nice to have the smallest initramfs as possible. -- Mauro Santos

Hi, I'm going out for a four month hike next spring, and will not bring my loved XPS with me. It struck me yesterday that being offline for four months is something pacman and yaourt might not like. Hi everybody, I am using an i7-2600K and since Kernel: 4.2.5-1-ARCH my CPU temperature goes up to 98°C. Before 4.2.5-1 lm_sensors max temperature was around 64°C. First I examine my CPU fan, but it works like before. Any idea why this is happening?
