Hi, Looking into [1] and [2], I noticed it's possible to get openRC working from AUR in Arch, but more importantly, seems like it's also possible to get shepherd working on Arch from AUR [1][3]. However, as opposed to openRC, shepherd seems less documented. Both shepherd and openRC appear as integrated inits for Arch... Any documentation on migration to shepherd from AUR? Please notice my intention is not to start a discussion about inits. I know systemd is the "de facto" init for Arch. I just would like to try shepherd on Arch. If possible using besides eudev, also elogind, which seem also available from AUR. And all this from AUR... [arch-general] Install Archlinux on HP Elitebook

Hi everyone, I'm struggeling with my laptop : I can't manage to boot into any Linux distribution. My laptop is an HP Elitebook x360 G2 ; BIOS P80 01.09 Rev.A (up to date). By turning off every "protection" I'm able to select the USB stick in the boot menu ; but I can't pass this step. I immediately go back to the boot menu. Does anyone knows how to install Arch on one of thoose #@$&=%* machine ? Many thanks, Tom

[arch-general] netctl multiple dns servers

I'm using netctl to initialize my server's network stack, using a tweak of the "ethernet-static" example profile. I'm specifying a list of DNS servers, but only one of them is winding up in the resolv.conf file. I'm wondering why/how to fix. In my netctl profile: DNS=('127.0.0.1' '208.67.222.222' '208.67.220.220') The resulting resolv.conf: # Generated by resolvconf nameserver 127.0.0.1 Any idea what the issue is? Does netctl not correctly handle an array of dns server names? Thanks, DR

[arch-general] How to build package in "clean chroot" using the "-U" parameter?

Hello, I want to autobuild a set of packages. For this process, it is not acceptable to use "sudo" as I don't want to enter some passwords and my autobuild program also has to do some other stuff with root privileges. The help page of "makechrootpkg" suggests, that there is an option for me: -U Run makepkg as a specified user But I tried this several times. So far without success. I've copied the PKGBUILD to the /tmp directory, just to be sure it is really readable by my build user. Then my command was: # makechrootpkg -c -U build -r /var/cache/PATH_TO_MY_CHROOT This now seems to download the source files and also is validating them against the stored MD5 sums. But after that I get the error ==> ERROR: Running makepkg as root is not allowed as it can cause permanent, catastrophic damage to your system. Seems like makepkg is called once in context of my supplied "build user" and then a second time without using the build user. Where is my mistabe? Or is this a bug in makechrootpkg? [arch-general] No ipv6 address - but only on one machine

Having a weird situation going on with IPv6. Every machine on my network can successfully get an ipv6 address except for one. (My main server.) What's even weirder is that ipv6 was working on that machine up until probably about a week ago. Not sure what the problem is, and hoping someone here might be able to offer a pointer. Here's the scenario: 1) Wifi router reports an IPv6 address on both the WAN and the LAN sides. (In the 2607: range.) 2) Mac desktop behind the router successfully gets assigned an ipv6 address. 3) Linux laptop (running Arch) successfully gets assigned an ipv6 address (using NetworkManager). 4) Linux server (also running Arch) does not get assigned an ipv6 address. The server is using netctl for networking, and its profile includes: ## For IPv6 autoconfiguration IP6=stateless Yet for some reason, this machine doesn't get assigned an external ipv6. Rather it only gets assigned one in the link-local range. (I.e., in the fe80: range.) I have to admit this is pretty puzzling. I can't for the life of me figure out why the server can't get an address. Particular since it was able to do so successfully probably about a week or so ago. Anyone have an idea what could have happened here? Has there been some package update recently that might explain this? Or any pointers on how I might go about debugging this? Thanks, DR

[arch-general] snapd - orphaned, outdated, how to help

Hi all, I have noticed that the snapd package is currently orphaned. It is also quite outdated, currently stuck at 2.26.1 while upstream is nearing 2.30 release. What can be done to update the package? As it happens, I am currently maintaining snapd-git package in AUR [1]. On top of that I'm also working with the upstream on the development of snapd. Since I am an Arch user, a couple of problems that were related to Arch support have been resolved. I'm also slowly working on getting Arch integrated into the CI pipeline [2] in hope of being able to run most of the test cases natively. Unfortunately I am not a TU, but I am willing to offer any help needed to get the package updated. Hey Sorry for the previous mail, mishandling on my side... Brent, your assumptions are right. I even tried the wiki page about the 840 G1 [1] as it is another Elitebook. Not better unfortunately... Marcel : in the easiest way possible with dd. Thereafter all the others possible ways :/ mar77i not wet I have to backup all my data onto my NAS. I'll RAZ my computer & BIOS afterwards. Good to know that the usb key can be a source of error I'll try with another one. Still sounds kinda funny to me because my other computer which is also an HP w/ EFI (Envy17) boot fine with every USB stick. I don't know how useful my logfiles are, since I booted Arch Linux from an Ubuntu install in a systemd-nspawn container to downgrade lightdm. I can't spend time before next weekend, so I restrain from reporting it to the bugtracker right now. [arch-general] Clone a block device using 'cat'

Note: This is not an Arch related question. I tried asking this question elsewhere, but didnt get any useful response. In the past I have received very helpful responses on this mail list so I am posting this here in the hope that someone would be willing/able to help me out. Hi, I am able to telnet into a router that's running a customized linux firmware. It was compiled using 'buildroot'. I was able to dig out some specs of the router. I intend to clone the router's firmware for further study. 'dd' is not available so I tried using cat to throw the entire contents of the flash drive (mtdblock0) to my pc using netcat: Router: cat /dev/mtdblock0 | nc ip port PC: nc -lp port > routerFirmware Then on my PC I used 'binwalk' to examine the downloaded file. The result is: DECIMAL HEXADECIMAL DESCRIPTION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 0x0 Squashfs filesystem, little endian, non-standard signature, version 4.0, compression:gzip, size: xxxxxxx bytes, xxx inodes, blocksize: xxxxxx bytes, created: xxxx-xx-xx xx:xx:xx Seems good so far. But '# unsquash routerFlash' results in: Can't find a SQUASHFS superblock on routerFlash The most probable reason I think is that 'cat' and 'nc' are not able to clone the entire flash as I intend. I am stuck here. Any help would be appreciated! Regards.

[arch-general] Doing a Recompile of All Packages?

Hi, Not sure how to pull this off effectively, but I would like to do a recompile of the system and all it's installed packages. How does one do this with the asp package, as the abs package no longer exists? I imagine that it would be something along of getting the name of all the installed packages, doing an asp checkout $packagename and then doing the makepkg song and dance, but is there a more efficient way of pulling this off?
