[arch-general] EFI-GPT : GRUB won't load

Hello, I'm trying to dual boot Arch with Windows 8.1 on an HP Pavilion 15-n216sf with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. I have followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub I copied the ARCH install ISO to a USB stick with dd and installed ARCH in the usual way. In arch-chroot, I mounted the ESP /dev/sda2 in /boot/efi and ran grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=grub --recheck --debug with no errors. Then I ran grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg On boot, GRUB is not loaded at all, the laptop boots on Windows 8.1. After pressing F9 fo the boot options menu, there is one entry starting with grub, selecting this entry keeps booting Windows. There is a grubx64.efi file in /boot/efi/grub. I have copied /etc/grub.d/40_custom from the section https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub#Dual-booting with the relevant UUID changed to be that of /dev/sda2 (ESP). So I can't find a way to dual boot with ARCH and I'm stuck with this. I have noted one weird thing with efibootmgr -v from arch-chroot, with fails with an invalid pointer message and lots of backtrace, and the following output : BootCurrent: 0001 Timeout: 2 seconds BootOrder: 0002,0000,3000,2001,2002,2003 Boot0000* Windows Boot Manager HD(2,c8800,82000,dc61d0de-af32-472f-8c54- fdafe931e191)File(\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi)(invalid optional data length) Boot0001* USB Hard Drive (UEFI) - USB DISK 2.0 I am hereby requesting help to solve this issue. Hello all, I want to send mail alert, when messages comes in via UDP. But having following error at start: Error parsing destination, destination plugin smtp not found in smtp( ^^^^ I did a @module smtp on top of conf after @version. getting: Plugin module not found in 'module-path'; module-path='/usr/lib/syslog-ng', module='smtp' I looked: pwd /usr/lib/syslog-ng [root@ns42 syslog-ng]# ls libafamqp.so libafmongodb.so libafsocket-notls.so libafsocket.so libafuser.so libconfgen.so libcsvparser.so liblinux-kmsg-format.so libsyslogformat.so libaffile.so libafprog.so libafsocket-tls.so libafstomp.so libbasicfuncs.so libcryptofuncs.so libdbparser.so libsyslog-ng-crypto.so libsystem-source.so a syslog-ng --module-registry |grep smtp gives nothing. hmm, what next? I searched around but was not able to find a solution. Do I need something to install? And what could the packagename be? Can someone help? TIA Stefan

[arch-general] Event loop problem

I've been having a problem related to epoll_ctl() lately. I have a 3-tier system: 1. back tier (tcp server) 2. middle tier (udp server) 3. front tier The problem is happening in the back tier. If I kill the middle tier with a control-C and then restart it (before making any requests via the front tier), the socket descriptor (associated with the middle tier) in the back tier is 7. But If I first make some requests via the front tier, then kill the middle tier and restart it, the socket descriptor is 1. When the socket descriptor is 1, I get an EBADF on an epoll_ctl with an op of EPOLL_CTL_MOD. It's not on the first call to epoll_ctl that it fails, but the third call. My debugging shows that the epfd and fd are the same for all three of these calls. I've tried many things to get the back tier to not give me the socket descriptor of 1. I've tried calling daemon(), freopen'ing stdin, stdout, and stderr, and a few other things. I've tried doing these things only in the parent, only in the child and in both. Nothing has worked. Hi all, I installed 64-bit arch on a low memory laptop (1G) not thinking about the higher memory requirement. Now I wonder, whether I can approach to change it by changing the pacman.conf entry Architecture = auto to Architecture = i686 and reinstall all explicitly installed packages. I feel like it should work. Any "don't do that"s, "go for it"s, "I did it"s out there :o)). -- Friedrich

[arch-general] Dependency Hell

Hi all, I have ZFS (from AUR) and VirtualBox (from Community) installed. The problem is that these both dependend typically on very specific kernel versions, and usually ("usually" being a subjective and ill-defined term slanted by when and how often I update my system; at least once per day) cause dependency failures which prevent *ANY* upgrades from being processed. As such, my /etc/pacman.conf contains an ignore declaration: IgnorePkg = linux zfs-git spl-git virtualbox virtualbox-host-dkms virtualbox-host-modules So once in a while, I'll comment out my IgnorePkg and attempt a system update and expect it to fail because getting the kernel, ZFS, and VirtualBox all to line up at the same time feels like, to quote Scotty, "trying to hit a bullet with a smaller bullet, whilst wearing a blindfold, riding a horse." Is there any graceful solution here? Clearly the three won't (can't) ALL be bleeding edge simultaneously, but is there a sane workaround to keep them as-current-as-possible without pacman barfing on everything else. It's not immediately obvious to me how to combine IgnorePkg, HoldPkg, and NoUpgrade to achieve the desired result. [arch-general] Error installing linux-3.15.5-1

Hi List, just did my usual pacman -Syu and was offered a new linux version, which I accepted to install, but got 1000s of error messages like this: ,---- | linux: /usr/lib/modules/3.15.5-1-ARCH/modules.symbols.bin exists in | filesystem | linux: /usr/lib/modules/extramodules-3.15-ARCH/version exists | in filesystem `---- A few hours before pacman complained that the DB is locked, and I removed the db-lock (as proposed) since I was sure I had no pacman operation going on. Do I have a corrupted pacman DB now? What would be the steps for diagnosis and repair? -- cheers, Thorsten

Hi, I'm really interested in Pypy and starting to use it daily but I mainly prefer the use of Python 3 in general. With the announcement of the first stable release of Pypy3, I would like to know what do people think of switching: pypy -> pypy2 pypy3 -> pypy Like that, it would be in sync with the name change of Cpython. What do you think?

[arch-general] Gummiboot and EFISTUB booting irregularities

Hi all, I couldn't find a better way of phrasing this as I'm not quite sure what the problem is or how to debug this. I have Arch with the 3.15.1-1 kernel installed on an HP laptop (intel motherboard), booting using gummiboot and the EFISTUB loader. When I start my laptop (or restart it) and select the Arch Linux entry in the gummiboot menu, I sometimes only see a blank screen instead of any error messages or any of the usual boot text. Ctrl+Alt+Del reboots my laptop. Seemingly at random, if I try again at this point, Arch sometimes boots and sometimes doesn't. Journalctl does not list any entries at all for the failed boot attempts. Can anyone suggest any ways of debugging/solving this? Thanks!
