[arch-general] Fast User Switching does not seem to work

Hello all! I am not sure this is the appropriate mailing list, and I have also posted to intel-gfx(a)lists.freedesktop.org (without any solution) and systemd-devel(a)lists.freedesktop.org Please indicate if you recommend me posting the problem to another list. I am encountering a peculiar problem with Fast User Switching or Kernel Mode Setting and I do not know how to troubleshoot it. Suppose the following tty2,3 or VTs: 1. Ctrl+Alt+F2: logged in user in console (no X) 2. Ctrl+Alt+F3: logged in user in console (no X) 3. Ctrl+Alt+F4: logged in user in Desktop Environment (X) 4. Ctrl+Alt+F5: logged in user in Desktop Environment (X) >From 1 to 2, or 2 to 1 there is no delay. >From 1,2 to 3, or 1,2 to 4 there is no delay. >From 3,4 to 1,2 there **is** delay. >From 3 to 4, or 4 to 3, there **is**delay. In words: when I run two (or more) Virtual Terminals switching between them (Ctrl+Alt+F4-5, etc.) takes 2+ seconds. (The VTs are either simply initiated with startx from tty2 and tty3 and having only TWM, xorg-clock and xterm as their open windows OR as different displays with KDisplay Manager (kdm) in :0 and :1) I am using an intel graphics driver so I suppose KMS should be enabled by default and this seems to be the case, but there still are delays swithing between VTs. I am certain it is not a hardware related issue, because I can fast switch in ubuntu, but not in Arch linux. My Arch uses systemd and Ubuntu upstart. Last, I am aware of the systemd's on-demand "feature" of spawning terminals but I think it is not related to this, since I think I correctly "pre-spawned" them. How can I make switching between VTs as instantaneous as possible? [arch-general] Mariadb eats system ressources

Hi, after struggling with this problem for one week I have finally decided to post on the arch list for getting some help. I have a very strange problem with mariadb from the official repos. I run a usual LAMP stack (apache, php-fpm, mariadb) on archlinux. Since one week (or so) I have realized a very strange behavior: One mariadb process stucks on 100 percent CPU usage. I am not able to figure out what's going on. Restarting mariadb fixes the problem for a few hours. Here is a list of a few debug outputs [1]; I have put it in my pastebin because my email client would wrap the text at 80 chars. If you need even more information I can update the paste. The mariadb status page shows about 6,5 queries per second (!) and I don't know where this comes from. I have disabled remote access with "skip-networking" (mysql port is closed) and the PROCESSLIST does only show one process. I thought it might be an DDoS attack on a website but no apache access-log grows unexpectedly. Even after stopping apache mariadb stucks on 100 percent cpu usage. I figured out that there are listed a lot of connections in the output of "show status like 'Con%';". Last hour I even had about 5000 connections but there are no appropriate queries visible in the general log. The general log lists the wordpress queries which are executed when I click on my homepage. Everything looks fine; the cpu usage does not! Helo everyone, since some weeks I have a new laptop. Until now everything seemed to work fine. But I can't get youtube to play videos better than 360p, which s quite ugly. Does anyone have a hint on this? I installed flasplayer from adobe and gst-plugins-base/bad/ugly. Best, Heiko

I'm in the process of setting up a Drupal 7.xx site and have com to the point where it recommends using PECL uploadprogress to provide feedback on the progress of file uploads but I'm unable to find any Arch specific install instructions, only those for .rpm or .deb files. This is the first time I have done much with php. any help would be welcome. mik

Hi everybody, It seems like systemd now provides a target that is intended to gather all timers supposed to be activated after boot. On the other hand, util-linux' fstrim.timer, when enabled via systemctl, gets symlinked in /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/. Other packages not part of base like extra/pkgstats or extra/mlocate also provide timers that once enabled, get symlinked to /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/. So AFAICT, there are quite some discrepancies concerning how systemd timers are implemented. I'd like to discuss whether Arch should switch default timers target for packages in base group from multi-user.target to timers.target, possibly doing so for other packages in official repos. Readers, Having read the web page 'android tethering', I write praying that a novice user is _not_ expected to have root access to a mobile phone, openvpn, android sdk etc. etc.! Currently using an old RPM distribution on another portable computer, internet access via an android mobile phone and usb cable is achieved by simple insertion of the usb cable into the computer! Mobile tethering is activated on the phone and "voila!", a dialogue window appears confirming internet access. Could someone please indicate: is this possible in arch linux?
