This started happening to me a day or 2 ago. [arch-general] system locale messages readable only on tty1 !

Here is what I uncommented in /etc/locale.gen: bg_BG CP1251 /etc/vconsole.conf: KEYMAP=bg-cp1251 FONT=Cyr_a8x16 FONT_MAP=cp1251 /etc/locale.conf: LANG="bg_BG.CP1251" LC_COLLATE="C" LC_TIME="bg_BG.CP1251" I ran locale-gen and locale -a as root. And after these steps I have readable cyrillic characters on tty1, and on all other ttys (tty2-6) I see non-readable symbols. I haven't been diligently following the mailing list, so perhaps I missed this. But given the recent "systemd is now the default on new installations" announcement, I'm wondering: what's the reasons for Arch making systemd the default going forward? The systemd wiki page gives a lot of technical information, but doesn't really clarify any of the motivations behind the move. Note: this msg is not any criticism of the Arch devs (I haven't yet formed *any* opinion on systemd), or intended to start a flamewar about the pros and cons of the switch. So just a simple RTFM response like "see this mailing list thread for background" would be perfect. Thanks, DR

[arch-general] "You have mail" message at login

Whenever I log in to a TTY, I get this message. I read my system mails through mutt, so i don't need this. I have unset MAILCHECK in .bashrc, but no effect. I set MAIL_CHECK_ENAB to no in login.defs, but still no effect. Lastly i tried creating a .hushlogin file in the user's home, but even that didn't have any effect. The message only appears when logging in through a TTY though, not in any other terminal. Any idea what's causing it to show up? ps: Gaetan, here's the content of my .bash_profile [[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc so, i believe .bashrc is sourced on login.

[arch-general] Final step before changing to systemd

Hi all :) I have almost everything in place to jump to systemd and I hope to make the transition after reading your responses here. Basically I need to know how to handle these daemons: hwclock dbus netfs As today I still have them in the rc.conf DAEMONS field but I was unable to find a way to enable them within systemd. Any suggestions? Regards.

I'm sorry, but I still stay with initscripts and on my todo list is testing initscripts from git, as soon as I've solved some issues. I hopefully will find some time to switch to systemd on a VBox install, perhaps testing rtirq on a virtual machine will help a little bit too, but it might be borderline. Dear list, I automatic login with systemd. I recently added 2 services, and they start AFTER the login prompt, so I lost it. Not a big deal, as pressing <Enter> gives it back. I tried with no sucess playing with the After and Before options for one unit file (netcfg). I would like to have a clean boot but does not know how to properly set up the units orders. [arch-general] Debugging kernel panics (ATI Catalyst related?)

After the last updates, I was getting a kernel panic at reboot; hard-resetting and then powering on again and it seems to boot fine. I suspect the problem has to do with the ATI Catalyst driver, as the panics occurred when rebooting after upgrading or downgrading the driver. I originally upgraded to 12.9, but rolled back to 12.8 after discovering that 12.9 broke my screen brightness keys. I also had to roll back Xorg to 1.12 because Catalyst doesn't support the new Xorg yet. Both times I rebuilt the module and (just to be sure) the kernel image before rebooting. I rebuilt them again once the system was back up, rebooted, and it worked. Any ideas how to debug, seeing as this just sort of popped up out-of-the-blue? If the kernel even logs a panic, where do I find it so I can figure out what caused it?

[arch-general] KDE mail popup notification immediately after login starts - how to remove?

In the past few days after a KDE update immediately after KDE login starts from the KDM login greet screen. I get a small mail notification popup window before the normal KDE login completes immediately after entering the login password in KDM. The popup says either "You have old mail" or "You have new mail" and the login will only continue if the "Ok" button on the popup is clicked. This has never happened before and I cannot find any setting which switches this off. The remainder of the KDE login does not continue unless the "Ok" is accepted. Presumably this is a new bug that has emerged but I would like any help in getting rid of it - if anyone knows a workaround until a proper fix is available in an updated kde package - though I don't know which package is the culprit. I am trying to setup LDAP and NSS/PAM authentication on my laboratory, but had some serious issues with nss_ldap (the system boot would lock-up when udev starts), so I was looking for alternatives when I found the nss-pam-ldap module (http://arthurdejong.org/nss-pam-ldapd/) which works great. The problem is, we have three different nss-pam-ldap PKGBUILDs on AUR, and neither of them is good (no one has systemd service files, all of them are out of date, one doesn't even install correctly). I would maintain my own package (that is a mix of some of these packages), but since there is already three differents packages I choose to not do so (well, I can't even think of a appropriate name since all of them are taken). So we have a problem here, I can maintain a package since it's of my own interest (at least until I discover how to use the nss_ldap module without problems), but I can't simple create another one.
