[aur-general] Out of date orphaned packages in community

Hi, What is the current policy for out date packages in the community repo. Iirc there were ten or so such packages that fall into this zone. Now while this isnt many, there packages have no hope of being updated, unless a kindly TU takes pity on them. Could they please be moved back to the aur where they can be updated and them moved back into community once that has happened and the PKGBUILD is at it's former high quality. Thanks, Laurie

[aur-general] pkgconflict: a tool to find file conflicts when building packages

I wrote this code in anger. Hopefully, others might find it useful. There is a little story behind it. I maintain the nmh package in unsupported. I just discovered that a package from extra provides /usr/bin/dp, which is also provided by nmh. We have this nice collection of files under /var/cache/pkgtools/lists, thanks to Daenyth's very useful pkgfile tool. We ought to be able to use that collection to detect conflicts like the one I just described. Hence the birth of pkgconflict. The package Sphinx 0.9.8_rc2-1 is now out of date, and seems to be abandoned. I contacted the currently listed maintainer of the package on 3/20 without reply. I would like to continue maintenance of this package. If someone else would like to continue maintenance of the package I am fine with that as well, I just would like it to stay up to date and in good standing.

Hi, I've been working on the splashy-creator package (updating it to 2.2), and had got it working, when I realised I had a potential problem. I needed to use sudo in the pkgbuild, and so far, I have never seen it used in a package. Is this OK, and/or is there away to avoid it? [aur-general] OneSwarm in AUR wants to update itself

Hi, I just created a package for OneSwarm [1] and uploaded it to the AUR [2]. The package works fine except that it has an auto-update feature, which of course doesn't work since the user does not have write access to /opt/OneSwarm. What is the correct way of dealing with this? Should I make /opt/OneSwarm writable by the users group? [aur-general] Adoptable AUR packages

There are three kinds of orphans in AUR at the moment. 1) A sea of packages that have either become obselete or have been added in some other package. ( Like dolphin ). 2) The others are ruby/python/perl libraries. The problem with these is that installing them using pyPI or gems is quite simple (though not highly recommended). So many of these get orphaned 3) The last category is where maintainers do not have the time to do justice to their packages and hence orphan it. I found I had a little free time and could adopt some packages. I found myself in this sea. It would be good if we can start a wiki page where every "useful" package that is currently orphaned can be added and removed once adopted. I checked out the wiki. The AUR cleanup day is the closest I got to. We would need something like an inverse of that now. So any user who wants to adopt a package should go to the page, choose whatever he wants to adopt and remove it from the page. I feel this will clear up a lot of packages in the second and last categories. Also, we can give a guideline for people who disown packages to add it to the corresponding page (obselete/required) in the hope that someone will take over the package --- Ashok `ScriptDevil` Gautham

[aur-general] How to handle interchangeable dependencies?

Hi there. I'm looking for a clean way to handle packages that can replace others. Examples: lash can be substituted by lash-git, it works fine, except namcap complains: hydrogen-svn E: Dependency detected and not included (lash-git) from files ['usr/bin/hydrogen'] hydrogen-svn W: Dependency included and not needed (lash) Adding 'lash' or 'lash=0.6.0' to the provides array of lash-git doesn't help. I have the same situation with for example jack-audio-connection-kit where we have quite a number of different packages that all provide the same basic functionality and are interchangeable. Note that it mostly works with provides, it just isn't clean and there are cases where it can break stuff. Is there a solution to this? Best regards, Philipp
