[arch-general] Different encoding on tty's and X, solution (or workaround?)

I noticed today that my zsh-prompt in the tty's didn't show the same letters as in the terminal emulators. First I thought I might have a corrupted ~/.zshrc.local, but while it showed the correct encoding in geany as well as in the terminal editors in X, it showed a sequence of letters (sth like "ßäü") instead of "┌─" when editing it in the tty. Invoking 'locale -a' shows as possible locales "en_GB.utf8", while my locale in rc.conf was set to "en_GB.UTF-8". Changing the line in rc.conf to the locale given by locale -a and rebooting solved the problem. My questions: 1. Did I find a solution to my problem, or a mere workaround that might create more problems after future updates? 2. Is the incorrect encoding in tty's a serious problem that might deserve some warning on the forums or even an announcement, or rather something more or less cosmetic? 3. (Now I admit to be a newbie...) Is this problem maybe limited to zsh, or does it also affect the majority(?) using bash?

[arch-general] Bash/term takes long time at first run each boot?

When I run any terminal emulator for the first time after a reboot, it takes a long time for Bash to come up, the window is blank for 10-20 seconds. On a quad AMD X4 with 4G RAM. Started after updates, don't know which ones. Anyone got a suggestion, or a good way to diagnose? -- Jonathan E. hi. So I was playing with an archlinux guest in vbox to learn a bit about systemd. And I found out that the gpm.service was broken. systemctl enable or systemctl start does not work for gpm.service. I looked for bugs and found FS#30053 https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30053 I just copied and pasted the feature request from the bug report and added one more line and it worked this time. here it is. [Unit] Description=GPM daemon Requires=getty.target [Service] Type=forking EnvironmentFile=/etc/conf.d/gpm ExecStart=/usr/sbin/gpm $GPM_ARGS [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I requested the bug to be reopened and it was denied. That's not the problem. The problem for me is the reasoning behind the denial: I quote "We don't want to be using Arch-specific service files, and anything with /etc/conf.d would be that. If you need to use special options, make a copy of the service in /etc and change it directly. As to the missing [Install] section, I'd open a new report." Systemd is made to boot/init a linux distro. But our distro here is archlinux and we are making archlinux package, right ? I understand we ship unpatched upstream package, but do we want to ship broken package so that they stay untouched ? For me, systemd service/unit file are just meant to be that, tailored to archlinux. Well, I am a newbie systemd user, so if this is required that we customize every broken systemd service to make it work, so be it.

Regarding the libusb / libusbx replacement, the following may be of interest to authors using it: I have one app using libusb, after the upgrade it consistently segfaulted on calling libusb_exit(0). The '0' argument in this call and some others means my code was using the 'default context'. Using an explicit context solved the problem. So either the the 'default context' isn't supported anymore (no mention of that in the docs), or there's some bug related to it in libusbx. After recent update of linux-lts to 3.0.33, it fails to auto mount my android device as usb storage(moto atrix2). My other usb devices are auto mounted successfully, just this one fail to auto mount every time. It can be manually mount successfully. And I tried linux kernel(3.3.8), auto mounted successfully. Only in current linux-lts the device fail to automatically mount every time. Any one experiencing the same? Which log should I analyse to solve it?

Hi All, After following the wiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Iphone ) and looking for similar problems on the forum ( https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=133822 ), I still can not get my iPhone to be detected by ifuse, in order to be able to sync music. The iPhone has iOS 5.1.1 and is not jailbroken. The system has installed: linux-lqx 3.4.2-1 ifuse 1.1.2-1 libimobiledevice-git 20120610-1 usbmuxd-git 20120610-1 libplist 1.8-2 I boot up the system (fuse module is loaded at startup), unlock the iPhone, and connect it to the system. I got: usb 2-2: new high-speed USB device number 3 using ehci_hcd ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: dma_pool_free ehci_qh, f2d1e060/fffff060 (bad dma) usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=05ac, idProduct=1297 usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 usb 2-2: Product: iPhone usb 2-2: Manufacturer: Apple Inc. But when running ifuse command to mount it: No device found, is it connected? If it is make sure that your user has permissions to access the raw usb device. If you're still having issues try unplugging the device and reconnecting it. On the other hand, Shotwell is able to see it, and import pictures. In case it's relevant, I'm using Gnome with gvfs-fuse-daemon. Any clue about what could be failing (apart form me :P)? Regards, Sergi

Hi, I am using wordpress and I found that the sample wordpress site is installed in the /srv/http location. I find it convenient that all such sample/getting started things should be actually installed someplace like /usr/share/wordpress/ and then anyone who wants to use the site can copy paste the files to wherever he wants and then use them accordingly. Is there any reason for the current behaviour? Am I missing some aspect? Guys, After updates to cups yesterday, printing to a laserjet4 stopped working. After searching, I discovered /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel did not exist. Why was it removed from cups PKGBUILD? [arch-general] Dovecot problem after update today

I have just updated my system earlier today - it seems to boot OK apart from a warning and Fail flag where the daemons start (in the list before graphical X starts) about an erroneous line 1 in /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/dovecot.conf which only has one line in my system: d /var/run/dovecot 0755 root dovecot - I am running x64_64 and appear to be fully up to date with the new filesystem package. I don't know if this is a result of an initscripts error or a symlink problem arising from the recent updates. Does anyone else see this and does anyone have a solution? There appear to be no error messages in dmesg or messages or the daemon log. The system seems to run fine despite the error message - and dovecot seems also to run fine after bootup. -- mike c

Guys, I just updated virtualbox-bin from aur to 4.1.16 and I'm confused by the drop of the /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv init script. After building and installing the package I received the warning: ==> **Warning** ==> This version drop vboxdrv initscript. ==> Please change to dkms instead of vboxdrv in DAEMONS in rc.conf. ==> So I read the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Virtualbox that explained the switch to dkms allows auto-generation of the virtualbox module on kernel update, but didn't really help me understand what I need to do to manually rebuild the vboxdrv module. The wiki references a 'vboxbuild' that does not exist in the virtualbox-bin package from aur. So how do I rebuild the module manually in this case? Also, since I don't really want the module autogenerated, do I even need dkms in the DAEMONS line of rc.conf? What I want to do is just leave MODULES=(vboxdrv), but I need to know how to build the module? What say the experts? I have received the confirmation e-mail, followed the confirmation steps and something weird happened. MS Windows needs secure boot because it is subject to so many malware attacks, Arch Linux does not. Arch Linux is a miminalist distribution and each user adds his/her own customizations to their own setup. Do we want to lose this option because M$ is too lazy or does not want to do its job correctly. This is typical M$ BUMF make the user pay and screw them for all they can. Each certificate will have to be privately signed because there is no standard Arch Boot Procedure. BTW I read and understood the discussions referred to in the links to this thread. John

Hi, I've got a question about the appearance of .pacnew files. I've got two servers running archlinux, and I did pacman's 4.0.3 upgrade on both. The first server did the upgrade as expected, creating the pacman.conf.pacnew file. The second server merge my file with the new one, without asking for anything ! So here comes my question: how is it resolved that a file must be replaced (2nd case) or created as .pacnew ? Sorry for my poor English G.

They have finally been enabled in pacman-4.0.3-2; when you upgrade, you will be prompted to run: pacman-key --init pacman-key --populate archlinux _____________________________________ Hello! Is it possible to run this commands remotely (ssh)? I have tried in different machines, and all of them seem to hang after saying "gpg: Generating pacman keychain master key..." Hi . I have just run pacman -Suy rebooted the system and found i could not start X getting the error message /usr/bin/X: error while loading shared libraries: libudev.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory .. Someone has suggested the fixed version of X but it is not showing up having done a "pacman -Syyu no fix i have had to use the dodge suggested on the arch linux bbs of ln -s /usr/lib/libudev.so.1.0.1 /usr/lib/libudev.so.0 Yes i know it is not strictly speaking the correct thing BUT it got the system working again what i want to know is which mirror is likely to have the fixed version of X on it i can the get back to standard system . A pacman -Syu today unexpectedly disabled IP forwarding on two of my machines which were configured to provide that service. Unexpected because AFAIK there's no recent news item mentioning this, nor were there any upgrade messages about it. I was using the material on the archlinux wiki page in arch-linux for the blind and ran into an error. Instruction 5 started the problem in which alsa-utils and espeakup and speakup get copied to the machine. I was told no updates were done and that no servers were configured for pacman when I tried to do that instruction. The thing is, that instruction is in my braille notes from quite a while ago exactly as it appears in the wiki and at the time I installed archlinux using those notes no such problem happened. Guys, Before I cause myself headaches -- is there anyone that has updated to systemd running a hylafax server with traditional serial modems? I see that systemd has the faxq.service and hafaxd.service: usr/lib/systemd/system/faxq.service usr/lib/systemd/system/hfaxd.service But what about the init and respawn of faxgetty that was usually done through inittab? mo:35:respawn:/usr/lib/fax/faxgetty /dev/ttyS1 This may not even be an issue on Arch, but there have been issues with systemd on suse, etc. not handling the modem initialization after update to systemd. While working on some AUR packages, I took a look at the PKGBUILD prototypes that come with pacman. The one difference that I had a question about has to do with this snippet: _author=AUTHOR_NAME _perlmod=MODNAME pkgname=perl-$_perlmod pkgver=VERSION Since the MODNAME package being downloaded is, major caveat --usually, BackPAN-Index-0.40.tar.gz that would make the pkgname perl-BackPAN-Index-$pkgver[whatever]. A quick survey of the Arch package database still shows packages still named like perl-backpan-index-$pkgver[whatever]. hi. since the recent news, I have decided to give a try to systemd. I am following the wiki page about it https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd Sorry for the newbie question but, why are /etc/hostname, /etc/vconsole.conf, /etc/timezone, /etc/locale.conf not in the systemd package ? I know they are very specific to my system but so is rc.conf but it is nonetheless part of initscripts Also, I vaguely remember that service are symlinked in /etc/systemd/.../something from /usr/lib/systemd/something. This step is not even mentionned in the wiki page In fact, I am looking at a tutorial to configure my system with systemd and all the service/daemon I already use. I don't even talk about lvm/cryptsetup stuff... So, how do you guys have done this ? I don't mind if you tell me to RTFM but where is the manual ? I need to read some doc. to understand how this thing works too.

I noticed in the help section of qtcreator ( version 2.5 installed from repo), the font size is small for me , as usual I tried key combination like(ctrl + +,ctrl+mouse wheel), but doesn't work properly, only the titles get zoomed in. And I changed setting in the options->help->font , also only titles zoomed in. The first page of help section of qtcreator can be zoomed in/out properly. But in many other pages (like QStyle page) only the title can be zoomed in/out. The qtcreator (2.4.1) installed from the official website qtsdk*.run installer doesn't have this problem. Anyone experiencing the same? Should I open a bug report?

Hi guys, Is there a policy with regards to GIDs in packages? Here's my scenario: When creating a PKGBUILD, I want certain files to belong to the http group. However, if http might have a different GID on other systems, I'll need to chgrp the files in the .install file, rather than the PKGBUILD, to ensure correct behaviour. On the other hand, if the http group is considered a standard group belonging to the base system, it may be safe to perform the chgrp in the PKGBUILD, and I can be sure that it will map to the correct group when it's upacked on another system. The Mediawiki PKGBUILD in ABS performs a chown to http in the PKGBUILD. I wonder if there's an official list of "safe" groups somewhere? Cheers, Paul

Hi All, PowerTOP 2.0 was released some time ago [1]. I've seen that it now has a tunables section where you can turn on/off several optimizations. When running only with battery, I don't hesitate to turn all of them on, but I'm not sure about what to do when I'm running on AC. Hi, all I found that on my arch (64bit), GUI program which use TK lib runs versy slow, and it also suspend the KDE for a long time to response to the keyboard. I found that when those program begin, the hard disk LED blink many many times. The example of that program is amsn and gitk. Any one have the same phenomena? or anyone have some idea about it? TK package version is 8.5.11-1, seems the most recently version. Thanks for any response!

The latest move of udev to systemd-tools brings up one question for me. When do I need to stop updating my machines so I don't have to switch to systemd? I don't take care of servers or a massive number of systems, just two machines. I have them configured properly and working well using the testing repos and currently don't seem to have any obvious problems. I took a look at systemd and it seems a bit much for my needs; two static wired ip addresses, no laptops, no mobile devices, and one printer. Somewhat old fashion and very simple, one of the reasons I started using Arch Linux to begin with. I don't mean to be derogatory or flippant in any way, and I'm not trying to start a massive thread on the pros and cons of either init system. I appreciate all the work the dev's and tu's have put in to making the system as wonderful and stable as it is. I simply don't believe I need/want systemd. Hi, Perl 5.16, as any other new perl version, requires all modules that are not purely perl code to be rebuilt. We did that for all packages in our repos. For a list of upstream changes please refer to `man perldelta`. Package changes: - Fix FS#27173 - [perl] Remove RPATH Since users probably installed some from AUR or with CPANPLUS::Dist::Arch, I wrote a script[1] that generates a local rebuild list. - raw.txt contains a list of files that generated an error - perl-modules.txt contains a list of modules the files belong to (not mapped to distributions; I'd gladly accept a fix for that) - pacman.txt contains a list of pacman packages the files belong to Binaries linking with libperl.so will also need to be rebuilt. [arch-general] Mirrors not synchronized or a problem with the package database?

Is there a problem with the mirrors and their synchronization or with the package database? Since a while pacman tells me that my package databases for all repos are up-to-date. The latest version of linux in those databases is linux 3.3.6-1 while the latest version in [core] should be 3.3.7-1 according to the online package database at https://www.archlinux.org/packages and the ABS. This happens with every mirror in my mirrorlist. According to the mirror status at https://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/ they are all up-to-date and 100% complete. Of course, I already did a pacman -Syy, but this didn't help. Heiko

Hi community, today I got the message from Karsten Keil that latest capi20 support for passive isdn cards will be merged into kernel 3.5 series. This means there is no need to manually patch an old binary blob anymore and those 2 packages will be removed from the repositories. Hi guys, Easytag is unmaintained and no longer builds against the newest version of libmp4v2, and they have no patches for this (as far as I can tell) upstream. Does anyone want to take on easytag to sort this out, or should we drop the package to community (does any TU's want it?), or to AUR? I am still not able to write to my external NAS drive an iomega home media drive So lets approach it from a different angle we will say i have not done anything yet just plugged it into the network What packages am i looking to install and what configuration changes do i need to make . Hey archers, i am not sure if this topic belongs to aur-devel or arch-general so i will post it here, because i think the aur-devel readers will read this list too. I think rubygems is very nice. It makes it pretty easy to manage your gems and it doesnt conflict with the "Arch way" as long as you install your gems in your $HOME. But many users want system wide available gems. Hmm, no problem with the --no-user-install switch, pretty KISS. But it violates the "Arch way" at the point, that we want to use pacman to install software, because we know and trust pacman and we dont want to use random software to install/remove files at critical locations of our systems. There are some solutions. Many people uploaded ruby-* PKGBUILDs to the AUR. Great Idea. But they are constantly out of date, because it requires some work to keep on track with rubygems.org (I am not sure if this is a correct english sentence, but i think you will get it.). So somebody wrote pacgem, wich is a ok idea, but its a little bit outdated too. I think the AUR solution is better, but we have to solve the problem with the outdated PKGBUILDs. My suggestions I wrote a simple python script that creates PKGBUILDs from the rubygems.org API. I wrote it just to figure out if this works, so its pretty straight forward and i dont want to publish it it yet. It worked quite nice - it can resolve dependencies and stuff like that - but there is one problem at the moment. The API does not provide any checksums for the gems, but i opened an feature request [0]. With this script i could imagine two things. Setting up a virtual AUR user, who handles all ruby-* packages. Then we create a rubygems account for this user, so we can create a custom rubygems feed for this user, with the gems we have in the AUR. Once a day a script checks the feed for updated gems and creates new PKGBUILDs, if needed. Pretty awesome! If it is possible to integrate this into the AUR, this would be my favorite solution. But i could imagine, that some of you will yell: 'This not what we consider KISS!' The second solution is to provide my own litte archgems website, that does exactly the same. (xev has no output on both Linux system) Where should I start from ? [arch-general] makepkg is creating BOTH a /pkg and pkgusr on build??

Guys, Building a small app (GNU External Ballistic Calculator) for Arch. When the PKGBUILD goes to package the file it create both /pkg /pkgusr directories. It puts the .PKGINFO in /pkg and then the executable and libs under /pkgusr -- what is up with that?? Anybody seen this before? I've grepped the source (Makefiles, etc..) and there is no reference to "pkgusr" so what's up? Hi buddy, I am using fcitx for inputting chinese words. I got a problem. If I change my locale to en_US.UTF-8, I can not invoke FCITX by pressing the 'CTRL+Space'. After I changed my locale to zh_CN.UTF-8, FCITX worked well. The question is can I use FCITX under the english locale? if I can, how to configure it? I read the english wiki of fcitx and it says I should check my locale. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fcitx Well, only if I change locale to chinese, FCITX works. For some reasons, I dont want to work under a chinese environment. I find a little difference on wikis that chinese wiki says I can work under english locale, but the way I tried didn't work. Hi, Following a system update, I noticed that the console font is not set anymore (I can't tell how recent this is since I don't go to the console everyday). After some judicious editing of /etc/rc.d/functions (to remove a 2>/dev/null and add a sleep so that I can see the error messages) and some googling, I found that the issue was due to the framebuffer not being initialized. I now have two issues: First issue: how can I find the right value for the vga= option? According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#Framebuffer_resolution there are three ways, none of which work: - GRUB recognized value -> does not list my monitor resolution (1920x1080) and the other 16:9 codes listed (1280x720) appear to be wrong since they result in a distorted display; - hwinfo --framebuffer -> does not show anything. I looked through the full hwinfo output without options, but there didn't seem to be anything framebuffer related there; - vbetest -> does not work in 64 bits. Second issue: when I activate the framebuffer with some default resolution (say 1024x768 vga=773), the font is set properly, but it is not kept: a few seconds after setting the font, the screen resolution changes and the font goes back to the default. Once the computer has finished booting, if I log in as root, source /etc/rc.conf and /etc/rc.d/functions, then call set_consolefont manually, the console fonts are set properly and kept until I reboot. I have a fully up to date 64bits Arch install. [arch-general] Timing issues when decrypting a USB drive during boot (/etc/crypttab)

Hello, Recently, I tried to automatically unlock an encrypted external USB hard drive on Arch Linux. I have done this by inserting an appropriate entry into /etc/crypttab. I chose the device to be unlocked by cryptsetup with a key file by UUID. Unfortunately, the unlocking failed at boot time ("device does not exist or access denied"). After some debugging via /etc/rc.sysinit, I found out that it is a timing issue and the USB drive which is a couple of years old was not ready yet at the time the /etc/crypttab was read and processed. A similar issue has been reported here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137467 For now, I have inserted a workaround into /etc/rc.local which unlocks the disk after an initial delay. This is still programming by coincidence; I wonder whether there is any better (i.e. reliable) solution to this problem? Best, Julius

[arch-general] standards on AUR content

I believe that there should be more comprehensive, clear, and explicit standards on what content is allowed to be installed by an AUR package. There already exist two guidelines [1]: 1. usefulness: "Make sure the package is useful. Will anyone else want to use this package? Is it extremely specialized? If more than a few people would find this package useful, it is appropriate for submission." 2. IP, content type (?) restrictions: "For most cases, everything is permitted, as long as you are in compliance with the licensing terms of the software..." The former is acceptable because "usefulness" is inherently subjective. The latter does state an important restriction regarding IP, but implicitly assumes that only software is permissible for AUR packages, when in fact there exist packages within the AUR which install only non-executable data. I believe that it is overall community consensus that such packages are permissible as long as they install documentation for a particular software package, a set of *closely*-related software packages, or the Archlinux distro as a whole (e.g., offline Archlinux wiki), and that documentation not directly applicable to the aforementioned, any standards (e.g., FHS, OFM), and any books (e.g., Pro Git) are outside the scope of the AUR. Hello everybody, slim has some known security weaknesses (for example it has no separate greeter process thus the graphical interface is running with super user privileges) and a lot of open bugs. Additionally it does not support latest packages (consolekit and friends) out of the box. Though lately the SVN got some commits and a new version has been released the arch package has not been updated since it was flagged out of date in February. I propose to drop slim from [extra] and replace it with lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter. This is a very active project with responsive upstream developer. Security is a key feature and it integrates with latest desktop techniques really well. The AUR package for lightdm has 259 votes at the time of writing. Greetings, in the last months there have been many discussions about init systems, especially systemd. The current state seems to make no one really happy - the current Arch Linux init system is a bit minimal and gets the job done, but it's not superawesome. There's things like init script dependencies that would be nice to have, but then it's about the smallest of all init systems around. On the other hand systemd is just Not The Unix Way, it consolidates everything into one huge process and forces some impossible dependencies (dbus? udev? on my server?! and you expect a linux 3.0+ kernel? waaah!). But "everyone else" is moving to systemd, so where does that leave us? (One might notice that "everyone else" is just Fedora/RHEL at the moment, with (open)SuSE tagging along, and most others still not committed to a migration yet) As an alternative to the One Process For Everything I'd like to ask you to evalute OpenRC as an init system for Arch Linux. While Gentoo is by far the largest user it's definitely not the only one - there are the direct derivatives (Sabayon, pentoo, funtoo, sysrescuecd, tinhat, ...) and some "foreign" users (Alpine, a debian derivative, uses OpenRC) What we offer you is a modern, slim, userfriendly init system with minimal dependencies. All you need is a C99 compiler and a posix sh! The list of features is long and tedious (see http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/OpenRC ), but the critical bits are: * portable - we have it running on Linux, *BSD, and there's no reason why it should fail on other unixoid platforms * dependency-based init scripts - no need to manually figure out the startup order, something like "before apache, after logger" is all you need to specify * small footprint - 10k LoC C99, ~3k LoC Posix SH out of the box (plus your own init scripts, of course) * friendly responsive upstream (let's figure out how we can cooperate, eh?) * boring - deterministic reproducable bootup, including interactive mode and verbose debug output For a long time we haven't done any active advertising, but OpenRC is now about 5 years old, and it is a drop-in replacement for our previous "baselayout" init system (which was started over a decade ago). We don't try to take over the world, we just create the best solution for our needs. And those go all the way from embedded systems (where you can use busybox for all the shell tools) to servers (minimal deps! No mandatory udev or dbus!) and desktops (including optional splash screen eyecandy and whatever makes you happy). There's pretty good support for advanced usage like SELinux, built-in support for ulimit and cgroups to do per-service resource limits, and it even comes with a friendly license (although some might say that a 2-clause BSD license it too friendly and promiscuous). And as a random bonus feature you get stupid-fast bootup - We've seen <5sec from bootloader handover to login prompt (depending on hardware and amount of services started, of course) and <5sec for rebooting a kvm guest. Should you decide to switch (or just evaluate if switching is possible / makes sense) you'll get full support from us in migrating init scripts and figuring out all the nontrivial changes. The rc.d script doesn't seem to use -w, so I'm wondering why that was inserted for the service file.

[arch-general] dos emulation programs error out

I just tried dosbox and it errors out on sdl since sdl can't open mouse. I have a logitech inc. iFeel mouse attached to this machine too and so far as I know it does work. The only reason I attached the mouse is since dosbox appears to require it for operation. I'll have to temporarily install dosemu and document its particular failure a little later. I'm using an amd athelon k8 computer with a gig of ram on it so that's the hardware reference. However, it seems that LDAP is missing from the "New Address Book" dialogue. It's also missing from the Akonadi configuration. I know it's supposed to be there. Do I need something extra installed? Hi guys, After gnome-3.4 move out of testing I intend to rebuild all packages with files in /lib/security to move them to /usr/lib/security. I'm using this locally and everything seems fine, so I don't expect any issues. That said, third-party packages should make note of this change as pam will no longer read modules that reside in /lib/security, so such packages must also be updated. Once this is done we only have /lib/modules left to deal with. Cheers, Tom

[arch-general] I need some help finding the cause of a problem with my gamepad

I have this USB gamepad, MoJo's RetroAdapter ( http://denki.world3.net/retro_v2.html) that is not working properly on the latest releases of Arch; I can get the directional pad to go <Right> and <Down>, but <Up> and <Left> are unresponsive (jstest does nothing). It used to work fine on Arch last year (I switched to Ubuntu to try Unity, and just came back), and it works fine on other distros, even on Arch's current netinstall image. To rule out the kernel and/or it's patches as the culprit I installed linux-vanilla from AUR and nothing changed. I guess it may have something to do with UDEV, but honestly I don't know what I should be looking for. I'd appreciate some help with this issue. Thanks, - Johan

To build successfully Texstudio from source, I first downloaded tarball from Sourceforge, then I modified some codes in three files. I diffed these files with the correct ones. Hi, all "http://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/03/11/udisks2-another-loss-for-linux/" I answered yes to the switch to udisks2 and now the mount point only shows for a split second in Nautilus. The device still shows but now I've lost unmount access via sudo too, my scripts clean up on disconnect so it's not an immediate game stopper but is not right either. I liked the fact it showed exactly where the device was mounted even though it's always /media/usb[0-100]. How easy is it to switch back to udisks1 and what problems can people see for me going forward, if I do?

Hello. I am debugging a C++ program with GDB and I want to use the nice Python scripts for pretty-printing the STL types. But, alas, it does not work. This script is installed in "/usr/share/gdb/auto-load/libstdc++. so.6.0.17-gdb.py" to handle the pretty printing of STL types. But the fact is that GDB does not load it. Doing a quick "strace gdb ./a.out" I find that it looks for the file in: /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.17-gdb.py Note the "usr/lib/" into the "auto-load" directory. (BTW, the GDB documentation seem to say that it should read it from yet another directory.) Right now I patched it by creating a few symbolic links into the "auto-load" directory. I'd like to file a bug report, but I'm new to Arch Linux, so I'm asking for advice: Should I file a bug report for each of the packages that install a file in this directory? Also, I think that some of them may come this way from upstream, but Currently, I've detected the following packages that install files there: glib2, isl and gcc Or should I file a bug into GDB itself? All, In building several packages, I ran across a configure error that libhpi.so was not found. Checking, I find the file on openjdk6, but not in 7 and no longer in jre/jdk 7.4 from AUR. Does anybody know if this so has been renamed/removed? How to handle the builds? Just use openjdk6 or is there a standard work-around that will allow building on jre/jdk 7 or openjdk7. [arch-general] Installing in VirtualBox - Screen goes black during installation

I started installing Arch in VirtualBox this morning but twice now the screen goes black at some point during (or right after) the package download step and never comes back. It appears that some activity is still happening, but nothing is displayed. If I do a full reboot the screen comes back but the install of course hasn't completed so I have to start over. Do I need to change some Display Settings in VirtualBox or something? I did tell it that the OS Type was Arch 64 bit. Thanks, -- Joshua Poehls

Hi folks, I have just run into a weird problem. I have a machine that isn't too happy with the 3.3.x kernel series. So I'm running linux-lts on it, but that one is meant for servers, so isn't as responsive as one would like on a desktop system. So I've decided to throw a little PKGBUILD together that compiles linux-lts with CONFIG_HZ set to 1000 but is otherwise unchanged from the version in ABS. To ensure this tweaked lts kernel does not get inadvertently overwritten by a linux-lts upgrade, I've changed the package name in the PKGBUILD to linux-lts-local. I've added "linux-lts" to the conflicts/provides/replaces lists in the PKGBUILD to ensure that I do not install linux-lts and linux-lts-local at the same time and to ensure that all packages that rely on linux-lts continue to have their dependencies satisfied...or so I thought. Compiling the tweaked lts kernel and installing this kernel instead of linux-lts on my laptop with intel graphics works without problems. My office desktop is a machine with an NVIDIA card and I'm using nvidia-lts as my graphics driver. When trying to replace linux-lts with linux-lts-local using pacman -U, pacman complains that nvidia-lts requires linux-lts>=3.0.0 and refuses to continue. Now I'm confused: linux-lts-local provides linux-lts, and the version is 3.0.29-1. So why does pacman complain? Any pointers are much appreciated. Cheers, Norbert

Hi, I just tried to use google voice to contact someone, after 2 'dialing sounds', I couldn't hear anything. After I stopped iptables, I can make phone calls via google voice successfully. Can anyone confirm and let me know if this is a bug in firefox or flash. It looks like flash, but I can't rule out a problem in ff's implementation of the plugin. Hi, Today I messed around with zsh and login shells and found a strange thing - when I try to change my own login shell - chsh forbids me to do this: $ chsh -s /bin/bash You may not change the shell for 'kravitz'. $ whoami kravitz So it states, that I can't change login shell for current user, but lets look at manpage: DESCRIPTION The chsh command changes the user login shell. This determines the name of the users initial login command. A normal user may only change the login shell for her own account; the superuser may change the login shell for any account. So this it's either a bug in chsh or in its documentation. Does anyone has the same problem? By the way, is it a typo in manpage: "for her own account"? Who is "her"? if we talk about user, there should be "his". But maybe I'm wrong, since english is definitely not my native language. -- Dmitry S. Kravtsov

Guys, Is it possible to change and rebuild only a part of a large package with makechrootpkg instead of having to build the entire package every time there is a small change? Specifically, I'm working on the kio_sftp part of kdebase. Once I build the entire kdebase package and it is in the chroot, I would like to be able to only rebuild the changes made to the kio_sftp code instead of having to rebuild the entire kdebase package. Something like (makepkg --noextract) so that only the new/changed code is rebuilt from the existing code in ${srcdir}/${pkgname}. It's just the ability to cut down the build time I'm looking for. I see there's a virtualbox-modules package, but that's for the mainline (3.2 series) kernel. I don't see a similar package for the LTS (3.0 series) kernel. After a bit of fiddling with systemd I now seem to have one of my systems back in working order, but not the second. They were of course both fully working before the recent systemd issues. They are fairly similar in setup (only difference, besides HW, is one uses LVM and the other doesn't). However, on one I have a fully functioning network, and on the other it's only half-functioning. The problem is I don't really know where to start looking for solving this. By "half functioning" I mean: 1. I get an IP via dhcp, using wicd. Wireless network. 2. I can make full connections (SSH) to other computers on the local networkd (using IP and mdns both work). 3. I can ping www.google.com and it looks like this: $ ping www.google.com PING www.l.google.com (209.85.173.104) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from lpp01m01-in-f104.1e100.net (209.85.173.104): icmp_req=1 ttl=55 time=36.4 ms 64 bytes from lpp01m01-in-f104.1e100.net (209.85.173.104): icmp_req=2 ttl=55 time=33.6 ms ... However, what I can't do is point chromium to www.google.com and get it to download the page. Chromium says DNS lookup fails. Pacman fails stating the same reason. Point 3 above suggests resolve.conf is correct, and it is indeed pointing to the wireless router like it's supposed to. Hi, Since yesterday's upgrade, I cannot boot using the "normal" image. The fallback image still works. The issue is that my RAID arrays are not recognized. I have checked that the mdadm hook is still present in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf I have tried re-running mkinitcpio -p linux -> no change. I have tried downgrading mkinitcpio to the previous version -> mkinitcpio complains about a missing file: /lib/modprobe.d/usb-load-ehci-first.conf then neither image works. I have tried downgrading the kernel -> no change. Is there something that I need to change in my configuration or should I file a bug? Hi all, I've opened https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/28881 "meld uses wrong shebang" some time ago. The description reads: ,---- | meld uses "#! /usr/bin/env python2" as shebang. It should use "#! | /usr/bin/python2". `---- The bug has been closed as "Not a bug" and "Works fine as-is". I've tried to reopen it, which has been denied, with the following comment: ,---- | Reason for denial: | Avoid using virtualenvs or install pygtk in them. `---- The above is not a "reason for denial" but a workaround, and strictly speaking a bad workaround. A good workaround would be to "put no custom paths in front of the archlinux provided paths in PATH". I really do think the user should be able to install custom python versions in his home directory (be it through virtualenv or by compiling from sources) and put them in front of PATH without breaking random python scripts in /usr/bin. Generally I'm quite impressed by the good decisions and great work being made by the archlinux developers, but in this case I'm deeply disappointed and can't really understand the rationale behind this decision. I wonder why '/' was chosen for that? Is it possible to change home directories for these 'users' to, say, '/dev/null' or '/nonexistent'? The origin of my question comes from use of 'davfs': when used by normal user (being member of 'network' group) 'mount.davfs' refuse mounting to '/mnt/webdav' because '/' is home directory for some users. With more and more distros and even android employing gccs -fpie for building packages, should Arch consider enabling it. For my users it would mean less programs being killed by the grsecurity kernel due to text relocation attempts. No complaints yet as I have a sandboxed flash browser but eventually there may be one about x264/mp4. For everyone else it would mean a more secure system due to better use of ASLR. Are complications like static binaries an issue arch simply hasn't the time to deal with (does gcc work around them automatically now?) and do users care more about adding upto a few seconds to the start up time of some programs on x86 over security?

Hello, DBus broke for me after last upgrade [0]. I'm using testing repository and have: dbus 1.4.20-1 dbus-core 1.4.20-2 dbus-glib 0.98-1 dbus-python 1.0.0-1 but disabling it and downgrading (via pacman -Syuu) to: dbus 1.4.16-1 dbus-core 1.4.16-1 dbus-glib 0.98-1 dbus-python 0.84.0-1 doesn't fix problem (not entirely at least). On testing Gnome starts in fallback mode, chromium and wicd-curses says: Failed to call method: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1 After downgrading, wicd-curses (which uses dbus-python) works fine, but other things are still broken. dbus-daemon is present in process list... What can be wrong, where should I look? Hello, I am planning to install Arch on my Late-2008 MacBook Pro in the near future, because I like the Arch Way and the BSD-style better. (I used to run FreeBSD for many years before I had to use Mac OS X. Hence the MacBook.) To get back to use Linux I installed Linux Mint 12, because it seemed simple. I now have one Partition with OS X, one for Linux and one small Swap. I installed rEFIt from OS X and then installed Linux Mint. What I have been wondering about now is, if it will be possible to install Arch without rEFIt and the Mac OS X at all? I read a lot in the wiki pages, but all I found was that if I install Arch only with EFI support I will have to install GRUB2. And on the page about GRUB2 I read, that I will have to bless GRUB2 from OS X... If that is necessary I might keep rEFIt and OS X as it is and only replace the Mint installation with Arch. Hello! Last upgrade of udev [2012-04-12 20:16] upgraded udev (182-1 -> 181-9) Makes my gnome-shell start in "alternate" mode. And last upgrade of consolekit [2012-04-12 20:26] upgraded consolekit (0.4.5-2 -> 0.4.6-1) makes that when I insert a DVD, I receive a message of error saying that the operation is not allowed (sorry, I was in a hurry and didn't copy the error message). Downgrading both of them solved the problems. Anyone else noticed this? x86_64 Guillermo Leira

I don't know what happened lately, but I notice that emacs totally locks up on me now. It was working find yesterday before I did a major pacman -Syu this morning. Even if I move my .emacs out of the way and start up emacs, I get the welcome screen but then no cursor key movement. The only way I can get emacs to close is to kill it from another console. Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing trouble with emacs 23.4?

Hi, For the past few days, I am noticing that whenever I log into a shell terminal, I get a long list of declare statements at the login. Can anybody tell me what they are exactly? declare -x DISPLAY=":0" declare -x G_BROKEN_FILENAMES="1" declare -x HOME="/root" declare -x LOGNAME="root" declare -x OLDPWD declare -x PATH="/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin" declare -x PWD="/root" declare -x SHELL="/bin/bash" declare -x SHLVL="1" declare -x TERM="xterm" declare -x USER="root" This happens with every user. Also, there was an error about no file or directory gpg-agent.info. What does that file do? What should I do to remove that error? Guys, Is there any way to revert my chroot for building back to gcc46 immediately prior to this last gcc47 update? Obvious reasons - bug fixes required due to new gcc47 C11 & C11++ extension implementation, etc..., but I would like to continue building until the bugs are fixed. [arch-general] libreoffice/cups print timeout - after fist few minutes can no longer print

Guys, I have noticed a problem in libreoffice for the past several months where nothing will print after the libre has been open for a couple of minutes. If you print right after you start libre office, everything prints just fine, but if you leave the document open for 5 minutes or so (could be as short as 2 minutes) nothing will print and you can no longer see your printers in File -> Printer Settings. If you shutdown Libre and restart it, you can print again for the first couple of minutes and then the same 'no print' problem occurs again. This has occurred in 3.4 and continues in 3.5. Has anyone else seen this behavior?? I feels like there is some type of timeout that occurs between cups and libre that causes this, but there is nothing in any of the logs in /var/log. This affects both LibreOffice and ApacheOpenOffice, so it looks to be a problem in the common codebase. I have reported the issue to Libre at freedesktop.org, but nothing has been done there. Also, all other apps, kde, etc.. continue to print just fine. Can anyone thing of additional tests that might be able to help diagnose what is happened? There have been some previous writeups, but no solutions: eg: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/libreoffice-3-4-2-… When the problem occurs - all lpstat information shows all the printers still ready and willing to print. Hello all, since the last update today, my X server does not start on startup, i have to start it manually. after that, a lot of things dont work, such as network (wicd), audio (alsa, no pulseaudio!). attempting to start dbus needs me to remove the pidfile first, then it starts without errors, but crashes again instantly. some hopefully useful information: linux 3.2, kde-4.8.2, fully updated system help pretty much appreciated. georg

Guys, After the latest updates, I'm getting a number of package() "make install" failures on packages that have, until now, packaged just fine. Is anybody else experiencing this on packages you build? If so, do you know what is causing it -- and how to fix? I've searched and found that sometimes reordering the link commands in the Makefile can help, but I can't figure out why things have packaged just fine up until now and are now failing. Since everything built fine with the build() command -- why the failure on package()?? I've also read another solution is to do away with the .la files completely and replace with a package config setup. However, before I try and tackle something like that, I want to figure out what broke. I have a problem with an external USB disk here, which is a WD 500Gb bought last year. Recently I decided finally to format it to ext3, since I'm using Linux everywhere, but now I don't seem to see it from my dell latitude. Psi+ is in the Ubuntu repos: http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/psi-plus . Are there any plans to add Psi+ to community? In the past few days I've noticed something kind of strange with eclipse-cdt on the packages page [ 0 ]. Also this can be seen if you follow the rss feed for updates. A few times every day since april 1st or so the eclipse-cdt package gets updated or downgraded from 8.0.1-2 to 8.0.2-1 and vice-versa. The last commit on the SVN page shows the PKGBUILD for 8.0.2-1 [ 1 ] I tend to update once a day, but in any of those updates I've got 8.0.2-1, as if that version didn't reach the mirrors. Has anyone else noticed something like this or knows what is happening there? Just asking, Alex. Hi all, My problem is that there is no battery indicator in the top panel anymore. I did: [gordy@archbox ~]$ dmesg | grep battery [ 11.595405] ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery present) So I know the battery is present. Also the laptop wont suspend anymore when I close the lid. I just installed Arch in Parallels 7 following the beginner's guide on the wiki. Went great and I'm up and running (without xorg so far). I want to install the Parallels Tools but I'm having some problems. I've mounted the tools but the install script is failing with a rather generic error "Some components are missing, do you want to try and download?" -> "Installer cannot detect package manager...". I found the wiki page for Parallels ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Parallels) but it isn't helping me so far. Has anyone gotten this to work? Any help would be great. I am looking to add a mailserver as well as an irc server. however I don't know if I should be using a separate vmachine for each service. I am more concerned about security than resource use. however the publicly reachable IP I have is through an external vpn provider (i believe it is strong vpn). any ideas suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, I've been using Arch 64 for a year or so, and I remember several times (roughly 5) I have shutdown issues with the latest kernel (at the time). The system is locked at shutdown, I can do nothing but to press the power button to force a power off. I am very sure it is locked --- NumLock doesn't even respond. And it doesn't return to tty as it would otherwise. It came to me again. This time I decided to have linux-lts installed. I'm curious, why is the problem always about shutdown? Is this bug from upstream or Arch patches? I don't have other distros installed by now though. Btw, how does linux-lts differ from linux? I found the -lts one boots very slow for me, got stuck at "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed" for quite some time, around 30 sec. With linux it's similar, but not so long. I have this issue when I use vga_switcheroo, to switch between Intel graphics and ATI card. Guys, Is there any way to check the number of cores on a machine to set the number of jobs within a PKGBUILD?: make -j'X' I have some dual-core and some quad-core boxes and the difference between -j2 and -j4 on build time is tremendous. However, for generically creating a source package to be used by someone else, I can't hardcode the jobs number. Anyway to test in pkgbuild or is this just a per box makepkg.conf issue? -- David C. Hi guys, The recent updates of kmod, systemd and udev in testing moves /lib/{systemd,udev,modprobe.d,depmod.d} to /usr/. The old location will, for the time being, continue to work for config files (as well as udev rules and systemd unit files). However, helper programs installed to /lib/{systemd,udev} will have to be moved to /usr/lib. This has been done for all the official packages, but third-party packages will have to be updated. Hey hey After the last bash-completion and git update there is a funny issue with the Git Prompt [1]: __git_ps1 is not defined The bash-completion update moved most completion scripts to /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/ and sources them if needed. See line 1933 in: /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion __git_ps1 is defined in: /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/git So if you type 'git pul<TAB>' this file gets sourced and the error disappears. I worked around this by sourcing this file manually in my .bashrc My question is, where i should report this bug. Is it a git problem or a bash-completion problem. I think its a git issue, because __git_ps1 is no complete function and should be defined somewhere else... Or shall i shut my mouth and continue sourcing it in my .bashrc? Guys, After updates today (kernel 3.2.13 and xorg updates) and rebuilding vboxdrv, virtualbox crashed at the grub screen booting an archlinux guest with the message it was a fatal crash and that logs had been prepare and the .png of the screen at the time had also been saved in the VM directory. linux 3.3 from testing - fully updated from test repo. I had plugged my cell phone in to usb - a few times in and out. I recently added the fsck hook to mkinitcpio.conf after seeing it being recommended in the forums. I don't have a separate /usr though. Anyway, now after every boot i see: performing fsck on <root-device> It shows up clean, and happens in a flash of a second. So my question is that is the hook supposed to perform fsck everytime? Guys, I need to know if makepkg/PKGBUILD can handle a check to see whether the same files provided by two different packages (which are not dependencies of each other) exist in the file system to prevent an installation failure due to conflicting files? The situation is this. Both tdesdk and tdesvn both provide: /opt/trinity/share/services/svn+file.protocol /opt/trinity/share/services/svn+http.protocol /opt/trinity/share/services/svn+https.protocol /opt/trinity/share/services/svn+ssh.protocol /opt/trinity/share/services/svn.protocol Since neither package is a dependency for the other, tdesvn needs to provide the files if tdesdk isn't installed and tdesdk needs to provide the files if tdesvn isn't installed, but avoid the conflict if both are installed. Is this possible? If they were dependencies of each other, then that would be an easy fix. If both were assured to be installed, that would also be an easy fix by rm'ing the files from one package or the other, but in the case when either or both can be installed -- How do you handle this?? [arch-general] aria2c left a mess on system

I've now cleared it off, but what had happened was a download of an iso with a torrent file and afterwards the iso had a unique inode it couldn't be checked with md5sum because md5sum claimed it didn't exist. I didn't even try it with the asc file since md5sum didn't work. Also the file command couldn't find the iso file either. This was the case for both root and a user doing the checks and the file permissions were set to 640 for both the root and user accounts yet neither could check the file. I've had situations with aria2c where it has crashed and died with exceptions on this machine in the past too. After all of that aggravation, I cleared the whole mess off my system and am about to deep six aria2c for good measure. The original bittorrent is no better and in many ways worse so if I do anything with that type of download again I'll either have to find me a 3rd linux alternative that can run from the command line or just use free download manager on windows to get it done. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Jude <jdashiel-at-shellworld-dot-net> <http://www.shellworld.net/~jdashiel/nj.html>

[arch-general] Some synaptics multitouch functionality lost on upgrade

MacbookPro5,4. After an upgrade a few days ago, which included an update to xf86-input-synaptics-1.5.99.901-1, I've lost the ability to right click by clicking with two fingers. Interestingly, I can still right-click by /tapping/ with two fingers, and everything else is working unaffected (including two-finger scrolling). Any hints as to what triggered the change, and how to fix it? Various searches shed no light on this. Nothing interesting is in Xorg.0.log, xinput's output seems ordinary, and I don't see any options offered by synclient that would change this behaviour. Anywhere else to look? (I'm about to try enabling shmconfig and see what synclient -m gives.) (I'm not a fan of mtrack at all; I'd much rather get the input-synaptics stuff working properly again.) [arch-general] arch chroot - makepkg.conf - Howto unset $PKGDEST, $SRCDEST, etc...

Guys, I experimented with different locations for PKGDEST, SRCDEST, etc. and now I just want to have the finished package left in the default directory where the PKGBUILD is located. However, when I comment out the PKGDEST, SRCDEST and SRCPKGDEST, the finished packages still show up in the last set PKGDEST directory. Where do I remove this information from the chroot cache so everything is reset to the default and finished packages are left in the original PKGBUILD directory? Also, do I have to edit both $CHROOT/root and $CHROOT/david, or just $CHROOT/david makepkg.conf? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Guys, I have followed the DeveloperWiki:Building in a Clean Chroot page closely for the trinity build and it has worked fine. For major rebuilds it has you create a local.db.tar.gz in /root/repo as a local repo. However, I was experimenting with makechrootpkg -d and it suggest it will add the package to the local /repo, but instead it creates /root/repo/repo.db. Why not local.db? Looking at the developer wiki and then looking at the help file for makechrootpkg: -d Add the package to a local db at /repo after building I expected both to be consistent. [arch-general] Anyone willing to share experiences running Arch on a current-gen MacBook Pro?

Hi, I'm in the market for a high-end development + gaming machine (dual boot). I've been a Mac user for the last 4 years and I'm used to their hardware, so I'm naturally considering a MacBook Pro as one of my options. My old white MacBook from 2008 runs Arch very well, but can the newer unibody MacBook Pros run it? More specifically, I'm looking at the 2.4GHz model (MD322LL/A) on this page: http://www.apple.com/in/macbookpro/specs.html Here are some things I'm particulary worried about: 1. Does suspend/resume work? 2. Does WiFi work? Does it work even after you suspend/resume? 3. Can I boot the Arch installer from USB? This is a big one, since the optical drives in MacBooks _always_ fail after a few months of use. 4. Does multi-touch work? If not, is the trackpad at least usable without multi-touch support? 5. Does that AMD card play well with Linux? If not, is there a way to tell the machine to ignore the discrete GPU and always use Intel HD Graphics? 6. Does the keyboard backlight work? What about the ambient light sensors? Audio? Webcam? I know there are many guides for installing Arch on a Mac, and I've read a lot of them, but none of them go on to mention how pleasant (or unpleasant!) their long-term experience with Linux on Mac has been. Is it worth all the trouble? Is it usable for doing actual work? Do things randomly stop working if you upgrade your firmware? Do the Apple Store employees try to wipe your Linux partition when you take your machine in for repairs? Too many questions, I know. I've been saving up for a decent machine for a year now, so I'm naturally anxious about making the right choice :) -- Ankur Sethi

[arch-general] Troubleshooting suspend

I'm trying to get suspend (with pm-utils) working on a MacbookPro5,4, and everytime I try to resume (after suspend-to-ram), I just get a black screen, with nothing working (typing the keys which should shut down doesn't shut down, so I assume everything's pretty much dead). The fan is on though, so it's not just shut down. After rebooting, I find that nothing was written to the log file after a message saying that suspend was succesfull. Any tips on how to troubleshoot this? Guys, I'm having difficulty with makechrootpkg not allowing replacement of current packages in the chroot even though then new packages are built with provides() and replaces() to handle the conflict. Specifically the trinity project provides source for sip4 that has additional hooks in the package for the tqt interface. I have modeled the PKGBUILD on the existing sip PKGBUILD to build split packages for both python and python2. In the build I call my version of sip 'tde-sip' and my version of python2-sip 'tde-sip4-tqt'. In the split package build I do: package_tde-sip() { pkgdesc="The TDE SIP C/C++ Bindings Generator for Python3 - Trinity upstream GIT version" depends=('python') provides=('sip' 'python-sip') replaces=('sip' 'python-sip') cd "${srcdir}/sipPy3" make DESTDIR="${pkgdir}" install install -Dm644 LICENSE "${pkgdir}/usr/share/licenses/${pkgname}/LICENSE" } However, when I go to install the package in the chroot with: sudo makechrootpkg -r $CHROOT -I tde-sip-3513_tqt-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz I get: error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) tde-sip: /usr/bin/sip exists in filesystem tde-sip: /usr/include/python3.2mu/sip.h exists in filesystem tde-sip: /usr/lib/python3.2/site-packages/sip.so exists in filesystem tde-sip: /usr/lib/python3.2/site-packages/sipconfig.py exists in filesystem tde-sip: /usr/lib/python3.2/site-packages/sipdistutils.py exists in filesystem Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. The same error occurs with the python2-sip replacement. I know those files conflict with files in the tde-sip package. That's why I did provides=('sip' 'python-sip') and replaces=('sip' 'python-sip'). Is this just one of the limitations of the chroot install process? Is the solution to start-over by cleaning the chroot and insure that tde-sip is installed before any other package that pulls sip in as a dependency? Thanks for any help you can offer. [arch-general] How to download .sigs into CacheDir with pacman

Greetings everyone! I am constructing a local, common repository of packages aggregated from core, extra and community, named 'default' for discussion's sake. This local repository shall be a "frozen" state of a (virtual) machine's package installation, to ensure a common package status across all machines which are using this local repository to upgrade. The idea behind this is to setup an internally tested "baseline" or "stable release" repository for certain clients. Basically, I want to shove 'pacman -Q' output into my magic bash script on my personal testing machine where all necessary updates are installed, and have a shiny repository ready for use fall out at the end. This is working nicely already, except for one thing that bothers me greatly: I haven't found a way to reliably download the official package signature files along with the packages themselves through creative use of pacman. I do not REALLY want to fetch the .sig files in another step from the mirror I am using, as that'd require me to construct package FILE names myself instead of just throwing pacman a "core/filesystem=2012.2-2" and let pacman figure out my architecture and download location. I DO want to have package signing available for my local copy, though. Is there a way to grab the .sig files along with the package files with pacman, and place them somewhere neat as the CacheDir, for instance? Any help or ideas are appreciated! Best regards, Dennis

Track01 on dvd's always comes up with unknown length when trying to burn a dvd with wodim. That's out of two different containers of dvd's too. These dvd's are single-sided so no danger of blue ray being used here.
