Hi folks, on my up-to-date Arch Linux system, I can't start darktable anymore. The error message is: /usr/bin/darktable: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavif.so.9: undefined symbol: I422ToRGBAMatrix However, both darktable (darktable-2:3.4.0-2) and libavif (libavif-0.8.4-1) are up-to-date, as well as my entire system. /usr/lib/libavif.so.9 exists and points to libavif.so.9.0.0, which is a regular file. Good day everyone. I'm facing a weird problem with my vpn. It fails to authenticate users despite the entered password is correct (copied and pasted). OpenVPN (version 2.5.0 on ArchLinux) itself is serviced with systemd and runs fine. I'm using OpenVPN's auth-pam plugin to authenticate users. You find the configuration- and logfiles below. When trying to log in, I get "User authentication failed" at my client and the following logging. The user was created with useradd and is able to login with ssh as well. There is no pam config for openvpn in /etc/pam.d. But it worked before without it. Hello, as the meshroom builds (from AUR) don't work for me, I tried to create my own package by modifying the PKGBUILD file of the meshroom-git package. This results in two issues: 1. While creating the package using makepkg, the whole git repository is downloaded - that's okay, of course. But all built artifacts seem to be contained in the resulting package file. As a git build shouldn't be "static": How can I create a build file for automatic downloading and building from current repository? 2. [arch-general] Bug with CIFS mount

Hi All, I suppose I hit this bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/68963 and it seems it is not fully resolved. I didn't request to reopen the bug, because I'm not 100% sure it is really the same thing. I have a setup with kerberos/sssd/pam/autofs, authenticating with an active directory, and cifs mounts stopped working. Login and nfs with kerberos work fine, to the issue is quite likely with cifs. Mounting the cifs share works with libcap-ng-0.8-1, but not with libcap-ng-0.8.2-1. I have cifs-utils 6.11-2, sssd 2.4.0-2 and krb5 1.18.2-1. Did I miss something or am I hitting something special due to the setup? Does anybody have a clue what could be the issue? Hello, i have one question. Is it possible to install ArchLinux on an UEFI System with full encryption BUT without lvm? I found no tutorial to do this. I also like to do this without grub. But i don’t understand the differences between systemd / systemd-boot and bootctl. ☹ My english is good, but not so good. ☹ I am sorry for this. Hi, I'm using PulseAudio over JACK and noticed in htop that while not doing nothing PA works much more than when idle alone, is this normal/right? This is what I do: Close everything that uses audio. Start JACK through qjackctl. $ pulseaudio --kill $ pulseaudio --start (So, PA now works as some kind of bridge redirecting audio through JACK.) $ pactl load-module module-jack-sink $ pactl load-module module-jack-source (So I have general sink/source ports to make connections.) But then I check htop and PA is working all the time. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks a lot in advance.

Ohai, I'd like to use FreeCAD and KiCAD on the same system but I can't install them both from the official repos because kicad depends on opencascade und freecad depends on opencascade74. I can't install both because these two opencascades don't like to be installed together. Is their a solution in sight? Can we recompile freecad against the newer opencascade? I've been having an odd problem. My laptop works like a charm on its own. However, when it's connected to a USB-C dock and screen, suddenly apps that were working great start eating up lots of CPU. (Such as Firefox, Thunderbird, and Zoom.) After a bit of debugging, I realized that the issue isn't even whether I'm connected to the dock, but rather whether the laptop lid is open or closed: close the lid and all those apps eat up CPU; open the lid and CPU drops and everything is groovy. I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing this, and my searching hasn't been able to turn up a clear cause or solution. Would anyone happen to have experienced the same issue, or be able to point me in the right direction as to the cause? I'm running XFCE, with the display settings set to "mirror displays" (i.e., the internal laptop screen and the external HDMI monitor). Thanks, DR

[arch-general] General protections faults / kernel panics with the Apple Magic Trackpad 2

Hi all. I think I need some help with debugging an issue I have. I recently bought an "Apple Magic Trackpad 2" for reducing strain on my hand (since I have some RSI[0] issues currently), which is supported in Linux since version 4.20[1]. After connecting it to my laptop it worked instantly at first, but "sometimes" un- and replugging the trackpad crashes my system. Often it works fine, but every now and then it triggers `general protection faults` (often while opening big applications like Firefox), causes my status bar to hang up, and usually ends in a freeze. Sometimes, just before the freeze I get thrown back to the console and see a kernel panic at the end of the log. The laptop is a Thinkpad X200 running stock BIOS, Arch Linux and sway, with microcode updates enabled. I could also reproduce the issue with Gnome on Wayland. On Xfce I could not reproduce the issue, and also not on Fedora (which I installed on the same laptop to the same SSD, for testing). I'm using the trackpad only via the USB cable, not via bluetooth. Attached is a snippet from the dmesg output with debug logging enabled (appended `debug` on the kernel cmdline) showing some of the protection faults. I uploaded the full dmesg output here [2]. In this specific dmesg output, most of the protection faults happened concurrently while I was opening Firefox (several times to provoke the crash). A photo of the kernel panic can be found here [3]. This kernel bug report[4] and related arch report[5] seem related to the issue, maybe it's even the same issue? However, the kernel bug report mentions that the issue only affects linux >=5.8.7. In my case, I could reproduce the issue with the following linux versions (installed from the Arch Linux archive): 4.20.0 4.20.1 4.20.3 4.20.7 5.0.0 5.0.13 5.4.74 5.2.0 5.8.6 5.8.7 5.8.8 5.9.2, 5.9.4 5.10rc-2 The USB ID of the trackpad is 05ac:0265. Because I'm very inexperienced with kernel debugging I would appreciate any help/pointers to what would be wise to test next. If this is likely to be an issue with the Linux kernel and not arch-related (unsure, since I could not reproduce it on other distros), please tell me so and I will post to the kernel bug tracker instead. I2'm trying to fully make sense of the boot process with systemd. I've read various pages from the manual, including bootup(7). There are two points I don't fully understand. * Filesystem mounts during initrd The man page, under the initrd section, says: "systemd detects that it is run within an initrd [...]. The bootup process begins identical to the system manager bootup (see above) until it reaches basic.target. [...] Before any file systems are mounted, it must be determined whether the system will resume from hibernation or proceed with normal boot." In my mind, that part self-contradicts when both saying that 1) the bootup proceeds identical to the system manager bootup and 2) a determination on whether to mount file systems is made /after/ basic.target. This is because some file systems (including, in most cases, the root file systems) would have been mounted before local-fs.target, which is ordered before basic.target. So either the process is not really identical until basic.target, or I'm getting something wrong. * Instances I gather that the systemd which runs inside the initrd is a completely separate instance from the one which then runs in the booted system. Which implies - as discussed above - that the system initialization sequence from beginning to basic.target actually happens twice. Does this means than any initialization units which could potentially be run twice - once in the initrd and once in the booted system - should be instrumented to avoid running their logic twice (in the cases where that's not needed or even harmful)? Let's consider for example an hypothetical service with "WantedBy=cryptsetup-pre.target", which decrypts a keyfile using an hardware token. This keyfile is then consumed by systemd-cryptsetup-generator with keyfile-erase=on. What happens if the service is run twice, but the key is consumed only the first time? A decrypted keyfile remains in the system. What's the correct approach to avoid such a scenario? Riccardo

I 've seen many web pages about the need to install the r8168 package for it to work. Some pages hint that the r8169 driver should work too. Almost all of these sources are many years old. I wish some forum members could share their experience with this NIC on current kernel. Does it just work? Is the r8168 package mandatory? Can complex tweak be avoided? Hi archfolks, So I did a `pacman -Syu` yesterday, after which point wine no longer seems to work (any command I run, including just stock "winecfg" after installing hangs forever). I posted about it on the ArchLinux Reddit, and also saw a post on the Arch forums about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/k0b5kr/wine_no_longer_working/ https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=261004 I was able to build my own version of wine from source and that worked. Then I built the wine PKGBUILD and that worked. So I think the binary package for wine may have been built wrong in some way, e.g. outdated headers in a dependent package or something. Should I file a bug, email the maintainer of the package, email the latest package uploader, etc.? What's the quickest way to get this resolved? Cheers, Jeremy

hi folks i could use a little push in the right direction. i run arch on a 2013 macbook air. i am running an LVM on LUKS system. after updating my system via "sudo pacman -Syu" i am locked out of my machine. on a subsequent boot i get the message: "ERROR: device '/dev/mapper/vgcrypt-root' not found, skipping fsck." "mount: /new_root: no filesystem type specified." So I foo-bared my /home partition, no big deal, done it before, and I keep good backups. I boot to single mode and get to a prompt. My regular user is gone so I try to just login at the console (no X) as root. It doesn't work. I know I set the root password. What setting is preventing root from being able to authenticate. I noticed when I went to cups on localhost:631 and tried to do an admin task and needed to authenticate. Root couldn't login. How do I allow root logins under Arch/Arco linux at a console???

Hi, since the upgrade of postgress from 11.9 to 12.5 I am having issues starting up using the systemd service file. When I do: > su postgres > postgress -D data it works great. When I do > systemctl start postgresql I get: An old version of the database format was found. Checking the database version shows it is on 12. So obviously the systemd unit file seems to point postgres to an unexpected location. My system file is pointing to a non-standard location according to the arch wiki: [Service] Environment=PGROOT=/pathto/pgroot PIDFile=/pathto/pgroot/data/postmaster.pid Anyone else facing the same issue? Any suggestions?

If some people cannot use the latest version for whatever reason, they are free to add the package to IgnorePkg in their /etc/pacman.conf. Now, I understand that it must be sour if the package maintainer himself/herself has to do that, but it does not seem right what is happening now. To avoid that the discussion goes about whether there are "a lot" or "a few" or how many there are that have a need for GnuPG, please consider whether it is worth to avoid shipping (security) updates. I can boot using an installation stick, mount all partitions under /mnt as during installation, and do an arch-chroot /mnt I reset my password and the root password in that environment, but that didn't help. I would like to go back to ArchLInux, but i must use windows for most software like a DocumentScanner (Fujitsu Siemens ScanSnap IX500) with OCR Software, ABBY Fine Reader and so on, i have a LabelPrinter (Brother QL800) My Hobby is Photography with my CANON EOS 80D. I use Luminar 4 to edit my pictures. I found another solution called darktable. But only for this. I have a PC created by myself in 2015 with specs CPU: AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core Processor 3.60 GHz RAM: 18 GB SSD: Samsung 250GB 840 Pro Series for my OS HDD: WD 2TB as my primary data drive Is it a good choice to install two OS on my system? I like Linux, so i began to learn with Debian 5, with Linux Mint, a little bit Manjaro and for few months ArchLinux. I like ArchLInux. Is it a good choice to do this or is there another option to use both OS. A Windows VM with VirtualBox and Boxes doesn’t work fine ☹ i don’t know why So this is not an option Please can you help me by my brain storming. Many thanks

[hope all are well, etc.] i use the npm package (for managing javascript packages). today i tried "pacman -Syu", and i got a number of errors about files under /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules that "exists in filesystem": ---- (182/182) checking for file conflicts error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) npm: /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/meant/.github/workflows/ci.yml exists in filesystem npm: /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/minimist/.travis.yml exists in filesystem ... (about minimist) ---- these are files that are not owned by the npm package. the relevant find command : find /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/ -exec pacman -Qo {} \; | : grep -v 'is owned by npm 6.14.8-1' shows two files in some sort of ./.bin/ directory ---- error: No package owns /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/.bin/node-gyp error: No package owns /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/.bin/semver ---- and then a number in a small number of npm packages, namely in - meant (the .github subdirectory) - minimist (the whole directory, i think) - node-gyp (the whole directory) - semver (the whole directory) that are also in the "No package owns" state. note that [pacman -Syu] only complains about meant and minimist, not node-gyp or semver. first off, i wonder if anyone has ideas of how i ended up in this situation? i know that occasionally npm will exclaim, with enthusiasm, that a new, updated version, is available, and offer me a chance to update it. normally i don't run as root. but, if i had, in the past, sudo'd npm, and let it update itself, might *that* have produced this? then, second, i'm ignorant enough to not be sure what to do and am looking for advice. i can do [pacman --overwrite]. i could, i suppose (at what consequence?:) [pacman -R npm], then re-install. Hi, I started working on my old Laptop again, which is a pre-EFI model and needed a live USB medium to do some repartitioning. I copied the current installation ISO to a USB flash. When I try to boot with it, I see the boot menu (which looks like systemd-boot menu) with only options for UEFI boot and EFI shell option. In the wiki it is mentioned, that BIOS boots are available throug syslinux: > Tip: The installation image uses systemd-boot for booting in UEFI mode and syslinux for booting in BIOS mode. Hi everyone, I'm currently building ungoogled-chromium from AUR, which is running for 6 hrs now on my 6-core i7-9750H laptop and almost done. However, I'm thinking about what happens when the next version will be released. From my understanding, when running git pull to fetch the latest version from AUR and afterwards makepkg -sri, the old binaries will be deleted prior to starting the build, which will probably require to build everything from scratch. Am I right? However, I'm sure that only parts of the source change between versions. Therefore, only parts of the binary files would need to be built again, which would dramatically decrease build time. Correct? How can I make use of incremental builds using makepkg? I'm aware of the -e switch, but that would skip the prepare function, which might be required as e.g. new patch files from AUR would need to be applied. Furthermore, the timestamps of the source files all seem to be set to the archival date. This would probably also require a full build, even if only parts of the source changed. Correct? If yes, is there a way to fix that? Having to spend 6-7 hrs of build time on each new release would make frequent updating impractical. Thanks in advance! LuKaRo

Hi, I am using clamdscan to scan smb file server directories: /usr/bin/clamdscan --multiscan --fdpass /srv/samba/files I upgraded my over a year old arch yesterday and clamdscan started to fail with messages: /srv/samba/files/CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1804.iso: Can't allocate memory ERROR I have default setting for MaxFileSize in /etc/clamav/clamd.conf. I also tried to set it explicitly to 30M but it seems that clamd started to ignore this setting after upgrade. Is it only me or anyone has this problem? Hey hey, I have just got a new Western Digital USB drive, GameDrive, an 8TB medium. I can't however format it or even create a new partition table. Evening all, When trying to update my arch system, I get a message about files in conflict with speech-dispatcher. Speech-dispatcher is not even listed as an update. I have tried paceman overwrite with no luck. I looked at the arch new updates and saw nothing to the effect of this. Is there something wrong, or a bug somewhere that needs to be fixed? Allan, While the pacman part of the conference is over, I just ran into an issue that would fit the pacman improvement segment. When updating, if on the first repo, the first mirror selected times-out, then mark that repo failed for the remaining repo checks so you don't sit through two more timeouts on a repo that is known failed at that point. Hi all. The package Pencil2D is flagged out of date since few weeks, the PKGBUILD update is relatively simple. I didn't know where to propose updated PKGBUILD version. I tried forum first, a moderator said me to report a bug, then I open a bug, and a moderator closed the bug saying to never report a bug but to flag the package as outdated (I said the package was already flagged), and he send me to this mailing list, I hope this is the good place? The new version of Pencil2D is a 1 year update with lot of new features, that could be useful for Arch user that want to make 2D animation (there are also at least OpenToonz, Krita, Blender Grease Pencil and Synfig) and bug corrections. So the patch in the current PKGBUILD is no more needed. So there is only to update version number to 0.6.5, to update the source tarball sha25sum to 31903c54c8f0a79385cc5f519b380d26524219984e619204820b946c96fc2482 and to remove the patch and associated prepare() function. I added the working version of the PKGBUILD for this version to this mail. I used it for several weeks, it works very nicely. I noticed extundelete utility to recover deleted files for et3/ext4 was removed from the repos. It wasn't added to AUR either. So it sounds it won't be maintained anymore... Is it because it's considered depricated, or superseded by perhaps ext4magic, or just that no maintainer likes it? Just wondering. I see ext4magic available, so it provides similar functionality, and can be picked as an option... Thanks ! -- Javier

Grub will then happily load any unsigned linux kernel. This is a bug in the shim_lock grub module, but even when it is fixed, you can get grub to ignore secure boot as long as you don't use the shim_lock module. If you actually want to prevent unsigned code from running, you should use shim with a MOK. You only need a single key that you can use to sign your bootloader and kernel images. By using a key for signing, you don't have to add any hashes to the MOK database. So there also shouldn't be much risk of corrupting your MOK database. -- Maarten >

Hi, I was searching for information on firejail, when the fourth hit on my search engine was: https://www.linuxsecrets.com/archlinux-wiki/wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi…. This looks like an exact copy of our archlinux wiki (including the header bar) but hosted on Google's servers with no administrative contact given. They also seem to run additional obfuscated JavaScript on "their" copy of arch wiki. Their main page's "about us" page gives just a 404 error, and there is no further imprint given. However, on their main page it says "Copyright Linuxsecrets.com. All Rights Reserved". It looks like they at least tried to copy ArchLinux Forums, Ubuntu Forums and Linux Mint Forums as well. I know that GNU FDL allows redistribution of content, but I do think that copying the entire wiki with no attribution or information at all violates at least ethical principles. They also copy the wiki login page, which is also interesting from a security point of view. An unknowing user is misleaded by this content, and considering that this site was the fourth hit on a common search term in my search engine I'm worried by the impact. At least I wanted to make you aware of that our arch wiki contents are copied without any notice. Regards, LuKaRo

Hello, I want to occasionally run Linux on a system which was set up with Windows 10 with Bitlocker enabled. Disabling secure boot for Linux and reenabling it when booting into Windows starts to get annoying. So my idea was to just use "preloader" and add it to the chain of EFI binaries to execute. But as Arch gets kernel updates pretty often I am a bit worried about getting my MokList corrupted at some time as described here: http://blog.rootserverexperiment.de/2013/06/02/moklist-gesemmelt-boot-unmog… Has anyone ever noticed this problem? How are the hashes stored? If I update the kernel, will preloader *replace* the hash in MokList or add a new one? How is this MokList stored? Is this flash memory with limited write cycles? I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling cockpit-docker, and realized I cannot install it anymore. Some google searching tells me that the cockpit-docker package has been removed from [community], and it is not in the AUR. Is there a reason it was removed? All, Just a heads up. SuSE has been doing work with Thunderbird 78.2 trying to prepare for a move to it with the openPGP replacement for Enigmail. One issue that has come from that is the realization that unless you enable a Master Password for thunderbird passwords, once you import your GPG keys, they will be stored unencrypted in your thunderbird profile. I'm looking for a mail client integrated with a calendar system and a contacts system, that works on both GNU+Linux and Windows, hopefully not Thunderbird, Kontact (Kmail + Korganizer + Kaddressbook), neither Evolution. I'm looking for a client which supports and uses GPG and its keyring and agent, for signing and recognizing signatures, encrypting and decrypting, and that supports autocrypt (autocrypt is pretty important to me). I'm also looking for integration with calendar, being able to receive invitations and events via email, and adding them to the calendar if wanted. The calendar must be able to add and keep in sync caldav remote calendars as well as ics remote web calendars (syncing them periodically, being able to set the period up, and the ics included calendars can be read only, but not the caldav ones). I'm also looking for integration with contacts, and the contact must be able to add and keep in sync cardav remote contancts. Until Thunderbird v68, it was the option through the enigmail, lightning and the cardbook extensions, but I really don't want to keep using Thunderbird v78 and beyond any more. I don't like several design decisions made by the Thunderbird team, regarding how they'll handle PGP, like not using the GPG keyring, not using the GPG agent, not integrating with GPG in general, and neither supporting autocrypt initially (which should be a must to release, or so I think, even K9 for android supports it). I understand Kontact is close, it even works on Windows, but besides the fact I don't like the bunch of dependencies brought to the system by it, neither its Akonadi sort of DB, I never got it syncing ics remote web calendars and I really don't know if one can't set autocrypt for it. I really never liked Evolution either, so that really is less of an option for me, but besides it doesn't work on windows that I know of. I'd prefer Qt applications, but that's just a preference, not a requirement. I was investigating about Trojitá, to see if it would integrate with other applications it doesn't provide, but I found it can decrypt, but not encrypt, and it doesn't support carddav contacts, and even less keeping them in sync, so it was not worth investigating about calendars being able to extend the Trojitá functionality... Kube looked promising, but it's only for GNU+Linux and Mac (perhaps, though not officially supported BSDs). Are there any options for such client, or set of clients working together? Following the [arch-dev-public] Pam lockout thread, Can we just remove the faillock entries from /etc/pam.d/login without breaking anything if we don't need it at all (like for home computers, etc..) The any 3 attempts in 15 minutes which is the default under faillock.conf: # The default is 900 (15 minutes). # fail_interval = 900 means that if I mistype a password on login, then 10 minutes later mess up with sudo, and then 14 minutes later have another slip with sudo, I'm locked out by faillock. That seems like overkill for home users. It should be limited to 3 failed logins at a single prompt, not any 3 in 15 minutes. # admin_group = <admin_group_name> is another option -- but at this point, I'd rather just remove it from the pam stack. Hi ! Sorry for being a bit off-topic, however there might be Kontact Arch users that can help me out answering a question about Korganizer, from the Kontact suite. See when I tried using Korganizer, I could add caldav calendars, and I also could add ics online web calendars, however it seems the only way to add such calendar is treating them as static calendars, meaning they get added, but can't be periodically sync, which is what I'm looking for, since I access as read only my office calendar from office365, which requires pretty frequent syncs, and I also access astronomy events calendars and holidays calendars, which all evolve over time. I'm assuming no monitoring means no syncing at all, :( Isn't there a way to add such calendars, but keeping them doing periodic syncs, hopefully with individual periods each (more frequent for the office one, and less frequent for the other ones). I've been thinking on trying Trojitá as e-mail client, specially because it's GNUPG integration and support. However I understand it doesn't integrate neither synchronize with a calendar, neither it recognizes calendar invitations to integrate with a calendar, and I believe it doesn't support neither synchronize with remote contacts. I do depend on syncing with a remote caldav calendar, as well as with remote ics calendars for events like holidays, or astronomy calendars. And I also depend on syncing with a remote cardav contacts addressbook. I'm wondering if there is SW that can interact with Trojitá to get the needed functionality. Has anyone gotten such functionality using Trojitá? Which sw/applications? How? Thanks ! -- Javier

Hi, Today I discovered that I cannot burn CD from iso image with brasero - it says I do not have requires permissions. My user is in "optical group". I finally resolved this problem by setting sticky bit on /bin/cdrecord and /bin/cdrdao. Is there a better solution? I generally do not want to ignore errors on update, so how do I fix this problem? The package was updated August 29, but the issue continues. Hi A number of packages depend on inetutils merely for the `hostname` command. Common packages include xorg-xinit and mariadb, which makes that inetutils is still installed on a large number of Arch systems, although its other components like rcp, rsh, talk, telnet ... and their server counterparts, are really old, deprecated, and totally insecure. Plus the implementation seems to be largely abandoned by upstream (see FS#61041). Needless to say, I don't want any of these installed on my systems. Since `hostname` is still somewhat common though, there are probably more implicit dependencies on it, for example FS#66603. So I would like to eliminate dependencies on inetutils just for hostname, in one of the following ways: 1/ Split the inetutils package and provide hostname as a sub-package (but then still need to maintain inetutils) 2/ Package the Debian implementation, also used by Fedora and others (but this includes other legacy shit like `nisdomainname` and `ypdomainname`) See https://packages.qa.debian.org/h/hostname.html 3/ Use the implementation provided by gettext (/usr/lib/gettext/hostname), which is already part of base, and thus eliminates the need for explicit dependencies. Although this implementation can only *get* the hostname, not *set* it, that's all the dependent packages need, and setting the hostname is nowadays handled by systemd's `hostnamectl` anyway. My preference would be 3/, for simplicity. I already run my systems with /usr/bin/hostname symlinked to /usr/lib/gettext/hostname (after forcibly removing inetutils), and noticed no issues. This can be done in two steps: i. make the gettext package install (or symlink) /usr/bin/hostname, drop it from inetutils, and introduce mutual conflicts on older versions of each. ii. drop the dependency on inetutils from other packages (or replace it with a dependency on hostname if options 1/ or 2/ are preferred). Fans of `telnet` can continue to install inetutils manually, of course. ;-) WDYT ? I seem to be having an odd issue with Xorg since updating to 1.20.9. I tend to be logged onto Xorg across more than one user based on what kind of task I need, and switch between them via CTRL+ALT+F1/F2/F3. Since the update this morning it seems to have started causing segfaults on Xorg the longer I'm switched away from the console containing the Xorg instance that crashes. Arch devs, For the past several updates, I have noticed the kernel sysctl settings messages saying: ( 5/17) Applying kernel sysctl settings... Not setting net/ipv4/conf/all/rp_filter (explicit setting exists). Not setting net/ipv4/conf/default/rp_filter (explicit setting exists). Not setting net/ipv4/conf/all/accept_source_route (explicit setting exists). Not setting net/ipv4/conf/default/accept_source_route (explicit setting exists). Not setting net/ipv4/conf/all/promote_secondaries (explicit setting exists). Not setting net/ipv4/conf/default/promote_secondaries (explicit setting exists). After the recent netctl message issue, I want to nail down what set these in /proc and whether it is something I need to do something about. I didn't set any of these specifically, so I presume they are either explicit settings made during the kernel build or they were set somewhere long ago by some previous Arch default. In either case, if there were no issues, I wouldn't expect pacman to go out of its way to tell me about them if nothing needs to be done. Though I can also see the messages just being some default behavior of whatever the kernel sysctl hook is warning about choices that are explicitly set. Hello, I know that Arch is not for the "average user" and some background knowledge is expected, but this was the first time I needed a boot stick since I think at least one year. Some minutes ago I did a regular system update and after that decided to reboot. After reboot I was unable to log into my system. After fiddling a bit I rebooted to an Arch boot stick to find the following message in pacman.log: [2020-08-19T20:42:55+0200] [ALPM] warning: /etc/pam.d/system-login installed as /etc/pam.d/system-login.pacnew As this seemed to be a candidate that may cause login problems, I deleted "system-login" and moved the ".pacnew" into place. After reboot I'm now able to log in again... IMHO something like this should not happen... Maybe it's worth a note on the Arch homepage that it is important to move this pacnew into place before reboot? Manuel

Archdevs, I have two computers using netctl, one for a static and one for a dhcp address. After the last update on May, 3, netctl (1.22-1 -> 1.23-1) all remained fine and old profiles generated as subservices in /etc/systemd/system, such as: netctl\(a)rlf_network\\x2dstatic.service continued to bring the network up. However within the past week there was a change, likely to systemd 246, that no longer respects the subservices originally created by netctl. Now attempting at reboot causes the network to fail completely. Not good for remotely adminned boxes. What is required is a "reenable" of the netctl profile. Doing so will remove the old subservice and symlinks and replace then with a directory in /etc/systemd/system of same name as the old subservice, but with a ".d" appended that now contains a "profile.conf", e.g. netctl(a)rlf_network\x2dstatic.service.d/ └── profile.conf However, there is no note or warning during update that any manual intervention will be needed. That will leave anyone adminning a remote arch install with netctl with a box that is unreachable and has no network. Shouldn't there be a warning about this change generated on update? Arch is always pretty good about warning when manual interaction is required -- and this is a biggie. Couldn't there also be a post install that does a reenable for each netctl profile found in /etc/systemd/system as another option to avoid this SNAFU? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hello, I have few packages (eg. pam_geoip, pam_abl) in custom repo which use libpam. Can someone clarify if PAM upgrade to 1.4.0 would require those packages to be rebuilt? I have few systems using those PAM modules and if those modules break after updating and rebooting then I will lose access to the system. And I do not want to end up in that situation. Since I haven't seen mass-rebuilt of other modules (like pam-krb5, pam_mount etc.), I think rebuild is not required. But would still like if some developer can confirm before I upgrade. it seems the 1.4.0-3 removed the tally/tally2 modules and (for some reason) I had `auth required pam_tally2.so` in /etc/pam.d/system-login. Of course that broke the login and I had to rescue the installation from a bootable USB. I wonder if there can be some pam-lint tool that checks your /etc/pam.d/ after upgrades. -- damjan

Dear friend Karx asked me to try to print something and then give the differences in the three files in /var/log/cups. I tried to print one page from Libreoffice Writer and here is the result of running diff for the old and new versions of the three files for the three files. Arch devs, Quick AUR question. The virtualbox 5.2 branch is unsupported as of July 2020. Oracle continues to put out testbuilds for 5.2, but currently it does not build with 5.8 (LTS is fine). I am still awaiting answers on the vbox-end-users list as to whether anything compatible will be released either as a testbuild case or as a release (Oracle seems a bit undecided) If 5.2.44 was the last release and there will be no update to support Linux 5.8 -- what do I do with the package? All, I was updating an arch install on a platter drive for my laptop that had not been updated since June 2019. The update was uneventful, only dependency issue was lib86xxdga a dependency for mplayer that was installed as a dependency of ogmrip. So, before update I uninstalled ogmrip, mplayer and dependencies that removed the issue. Update of 1568 packages proceeded normally, until the post-install hooks started to run. After a reboot, the first openvpn-client@ instance I try to start takes almost exactly two minutes to start. The instances before that one start just fine in a few seconds. When that happens, I can see from journalctl that the client actually starts in the first few seconds after the systemctl command. But then, the command doesn't terminate for two more minutes (with no further journal entries). Has anyone seen this before? What could it be? Riccardo

Hi, We've been discussing the distribution mechanism for mkosi ( https://github.com/systemd/mkosi) and one of the ideas is using Python zipapp (https://docs.python.org/3/library/zipapp.html) to allow us to split mkosi up into multiple files for easier development without complicating the packaging process. zipapp takes all source files in a directory and bundles them up into a single executable python zip archive so after building the zip you can simply call ./mkosi to run mkosi and can put it anywhere in the PATH to simply run mkosi wherever you want. Are there any issues with this approach from a distro packaging perspective? Zipapp doesn't bundle a specific python version (uses system python and system python stdlib) and we don't intend on bundling any dependencies in the zipapp. I don't think I've ever seen a python application packaged this way which is why I'm asking. It seems that we have splash-arch.bmp included with Arch Linux systemd package. The included .bmp image is the two-color standard version (arch word in black text). It would be useful to also include the two-color inverted version (for dark backgrounds, also Arch main logo). The .bmp images are useful, for example for setting up boot splash image for people booting with dracut initramfs. Who is the best person to report/talk to regarding this request?

Good morning all, I am wondering if anyone is having problems refreshing PGP keys from the default server? I can force it to use the ipv4 server, but using mate-terminal with orca I am unable to edit the /etc/pacman.d/gnu/pgp.conf file to change the server. Orca will not read it and plume will not open it with sudo rites. Any ideas on this one? This is an older arch vm which will not update till the PGP keys have been updated and imported. I do not have speech in a conc so that would not work. Thanks. Matthew

I have root encryption set up on my system and I currently boot with the sd-encrypt and sd-lvm hooks. I would like to change my current crypto setup in a way that would require more step to unlock the root than just typing in a passphares. For this reason, sd-encrypt clearly cannot serve my use case. For this reason, I would like to write a custom hook to mount the root volume. Now, systemd boot doesn't have a concept of runtime hooks. Thus, I need to make a systemd unit that gets pulled in by cryptsetup.target in the place of systemd-cryptsetup@.service. (Basically, I need to replace the whole systemd-cryptsetup-generator and systemd-cryptsetup logic.) However, I really have no idea on how to achieve this. Should I write a custom mkinitcpio hook which completely bypasses sd-crypt/cryptsetup.target and instead starts a different unit with my own decryption logic? Or is there a way to hook into cryptsetup.target and instruct it to pull in my logic instead of systemd-cryptsetup*? Of course, the other possibility is to just stop using a systemd boot and instead setting up a busybox early userspace. Then it's just a matter of writing a shell script. However, since I'm already using systemd for everything - from the bootloader to userspace - I don't think it makes much sense to do that. Dear all, i am using i3 wm with Polybar as my status bar. i created the currently installed packages list using pacman's hook command. when i try to do fresh installation, i can get only the packages that are present in official Repos that doesnot include Polybar. Then after installing Yay i can get Polybar from AUR. it is quite inconvenience, and i dont know why Polybar is not added to official packages, Polybar is quite popular as well as it has quite good features. is is possible to include Polybar to the official packages under extra or community? if not could u plz explain? Hello, I am the maintainer of the 'transcribe' AUR package. Recently, I have received a request (cc) about also packaging and providing a proprietary library that comes along with 'transcribe'. I quote: * videosection, a special plugin provided by us as part of the download, can be found in the file libgstvideosection.so and it needs to be alongside the transcribe executable.* I tried to provide the videosection library in /usr/lib, but that doesn't work. I don't feel comfortable providing the library in /usr/bin. Do you know an appropriate way to deal with such cases? Is it preferable to install the executable in a separate folder alongside the library? For example, /opt/transcribe? Thanks in advance, Dominik

The splitted package bind and bind-tools had this option, but now I must install a service that I do not need which is annoying. There is any way to reconsider this? Since a few days ago, font rendering inside my desktop environment (SwayWM) seems to have changed. E.g. title bars are now rendered using a generic monospaced font instead of the usual one, and Termite does not seem to be able to load the Fira Code font and falls back to its default font. bemenu is also rendering differently and with a different font. I cannot find anything obvious in /var/log/pacman.log. I.e. I have done a full system upgrade lately but it doesn't seem to include anything that could have obviously caused this. I have a private key with a password. When I start OpenVPN with the openvpn command, all works fine. When I start it with the systemd unit (e.g. systemctl start openvpn-client@conf_file), a systemd-ask-password process is spawned from the unit but the prompt is not shown. Dear the maintainers. First of all, I sincerely appreciate your effort to maintain this distribution. I would like to report an incident related to the two packages: cuda and nvidia. It seems that the cuda package is recently updated to 11.0.2-1 in [community-testing]. However, the most recent nvidia package is 440.100-3 in [extra]. Therefore, when I attempt to run an application utilizing CUDA, it instantly hangs with an error related to version mismatch. This problem is resolved when I install nvidia-beta package in AUR. Afternoon all Having a whole hoard of issues that seem like they MAY be permissions related . Is there a hard and fast set of permission attributes that can be set as a default for a user at them moment everything in my user is set name users with the bulk of the permissions set -rw-r--r-- or drwxr-xr-x for a directory i know a lot of you use the numeric system i am not sure of it I get problems such as system settings do not stick libreofice complains about backup files some things work some play up or fail completely Kaffeine for one just bombs out i believe this is a permissions thing but cant find any usefull info as to exactly what should be what if you follow . One of these would be unique, the package is complaining my video drivers aren't up to date. I don't even know what video drivers should be on this machine and haven't got local linux support to clue me in on this one and me being totally blind I don't usually touch or have any interest in video drivers. If the video driver is wrong, will the work done by the computer be rjected by the foldingathome server? The second problem may be effecting all users of the foldingathome package. How good is this package about cleaning up disk space it no longer needs once a completed job gets sent to the server? I have a 120GB drive that's run out of space. This computer runs solid state so the 3tb sata drive wouldn't work in it otherwise this wouldn't be a problem. --

Hi all, My new Lenovo P53 has an Intel UHD Graphics 630 and a NVIDIA Quadro T1000 built in. The HDMI port seems to be wired to the NVIDIA graphics. However, dual graphics is not working. When using the nvidia driver and the nvidia-prime package, I can run games on the NVIDIA card using prime-run. But xrandr only shows "eDP1" (internal screen) and "VIRTUAL0", no external ports are recognized. When using xf86-video-nouveau, xrandr shows several DP and eDP-ports and the HDMI port. However, the ports are always shown as "disconnected", even when a HDMI cable is connected (works on another Arch Linux machine). Furthermore, DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" always shows the UHD 630. Any ideas how to debug or fix this issue? Thanks a lot, LuKaRo

Hi, Since end of 2019 I am using the PyFtdi Python package by Emmanuel Blot to talk to an FTDI chip on some controller board. Documentation of PyFtdi is hosted on http://eblot.github.io/pyftdi/. FTDI (Future Technology Devices International) chips (and similar chips by other vendors) implement an Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) via USB. This can then be used to send messages to the device and receive replies. According to http://eblot.github.io/pyftdi/installation.html, it is at least on Debian and Ubuntu Linux necessary to write an `udev` rules file in order to permit ordinary users access to such an USB device. I attempted to use PyFtdi on my Arch Linux box (patched daily) as an ordinary user, and successfully talked to the device without any additional `udev` rule. We (Emmanual and me) would like to find out why and how Arch is configured to permit this. As I observed this behaviour, I opened Issue #161 on https://github.com/eblot/pyftdi: https://github.com/eblot/pyftdi/issues/161. There were some posts by Emmanuel and by me, but we didn't achieve anything substantial so far. Furthermore, the question arises if there are more places other than PyFtdi where this result might be relevant. Finally it might apply also to other Linux distributions different from Arch Linux aside Debian and Ubuntu; the documentation of pyftdi maybe could be updated to reflect this. Any pointer is welcome. Hi, While working on locale-gen support for systemd-firstboot ( https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/15994) I started wondering if it wouldn't be simpler to delegate the installation of locales to pacman instead. I haven't been following the mailing lists for very long so I don't know if this has ever been discussed. I'd imagine Arch could provide a package for each locale supported by glibc and users would install the ones they need. The PKGBUILD would use localedef to generate separate folders of compiled locale files for each locale that would be stored in /usr/lib/locale. This approach is already implemented by distros such as Fedora (and co) and Ubuntu. The main advantage of this approach is that there's no need to set up an entire chroot to run locale-gen when pacstrapping a new Arch system image. This might seem easy but becomes trickier when the image uses a different architecture than the host system since emulation of that architecture has to be set up first. Even if locale-gen had a --root option so using the host's locale-gen would be an option, I'm not sure if there's any guarantee that compiled locale definitions generated by the host system's locale-gen would work with the glibc version used by the image (less of a problem with Arch but the glibc on the host could still potentially be out-of-date compared to the one installed in the image). Being able to install locales with pacman would solve all these problems. Any interest in something like this from the Arch developers? I'd be willing to try my hand at a PKGBUILD for this but I'm not a TU so I'd need some support to get this implemented (if there is any interest at all). (This also doesn't imply that locale-gen wouldn't work anymore, locale-gen stores everything in /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive which would be independent from the files installed by the locale packages, so both approaches should work side-by-side) Cheers, Daan De Meyer

This is more of what is the recommended practice ... for handling pacman.log? Strange question, yes, but pacman.log is one of those that never gets rotated, etc.. The information in it isn't useful after a few upgrade cycles. So what is the general practice for dealing with it? o Periodically delete it? o Split it by year with awk and compress it for?? Historical reasons? o Keep the last year? It not one of those things I've ever thought about before, but grepping (after cleaning up the wide-character right-arrow from 2017/18 timeframe), I checked and I have 5M of log dating back to 2013. It's not hurting anything, but that got me thinking? What do others do with it, and is there any recommended manner for dealing with it? I don't see any reason for keeping much of it beyond what you may be asked to post as part of a bug-report, etc.. which usually wouldn't be more than the last couple of months for most packages.. man 8 pacman doesn't provide any options for dealing with how much to keep or to truncate. -- David C. With grub what should be done when grub boots to run the kernel used before the current default kernel? On the older amd machine I have I tried installing linux-amd and the git site timed out on me twice. I think that was during that last ddos attack though. The newer machine has linux-amd installed and running on it. The current kernel on the older machine that got updated yesterday has a serious speech impediment. This speech impediment effects espeakup and if I can I'm going to find out if it also effects fenrir. --

Hi all, I've been trying to debug an issue with a personal certificate. At first I thought it was a Kmail/Kleopatra bug because after some updates of KDE Applications back in January I stopped being able to sign emails with it. But lately, after trying in KDE Neon and also in a fresh installation of archlinux in a VM, it seems to work there but not in my old installation. I have carefully checked old configurations (I don't have any .pacnew) and still not working. I have already wrote a detailed explanation in the forum so I will not copy paste here. "Sending message failed. Could not compose message: Address family not supported by protocol." Any ideas what other packages can interfere with my certificate? Today I set dash as my default shell [1] on two PCs. We will see if I get into trouble. This question was asked years ago but maybe good to ask again. Could dash be made the default shell in Arch? I did some simple benchmarks and dash is much faster than bash, moreover being far smaller there is less chance of bugs. A possible issue is bashisms, however Ubuntu has been using dash as default for 14 years and Debian also for several years so hopefully most scripts have had bashisms removed by upstreams. I often find myself using the `assume-installed`[1] option of pacman when doing upgrades, since I want to avoid some (for me) nonsensical dependencies to be installed. Is it possible to configure this in some config file, so I don't have to remember to type it all the time? [1] sudo pacman -Syu --assume-installed noto-fonts noto-fonts is pulled as a dependency of plasma-integration, but I don't want it installed since it takes over the default fonts (ships an aggressive fontconfig configuration) for many websites, and looks quite bad *for me* (on a 14" FHD display). I am a Mate user and I use my keyboard to write both English and Bangla. For the last few days when I am booting into Mate, a problem window is coming up -- I have attached the file kbd-text-s.png. Hello, as Python2 has been sunset since the beginning of this year (https://www.python.org/doc/sunset-python-2/) I'm looking forward to removing it. One of the packages still depending on python2 is wesnoth, though due to https://wiki.wesnoth.org/Maintenance_tools it should work with Python3 already. Of course, this should work, since Python3 is installed already besides Python2, but it seems to be an unnecessary dependency. Instead, the dependency should be updated to python. Kind regards Peter

We're behind by 4 releases for the cascadia code font: https://github.com/microsoft/cascadia-code/releases This particularly interests me because they've added a non-ligature build of the font which they named Cascadia Mono. I took a stab at updating the PKGBUILD in the subversion repository and ended up with the attached patch which installs both Cascadia Code and Cascadia Mono. It's worth noting that the patch is only for one of the PKGBUILDs in tff-cascadia-code so the change probably has to be applied to both (I'm not familiar with the build system for the community repo). -- Tom Alexander

hi. a month ago i ran out of room on my root file system, so relocated /var/cache/pacman to /home, and left behind a symlink. today, after a while, i did a 'pacman -Syu', which downloaded lots, and ran through a lot new keys, upgrading, etc., then failed (see below), and (the symbolic link at) /var/cache/pacman seems to have disappeared. any suggestions on how i might recover? Hi, there are several packages for network manager and related software in the official repositories. Unfortunately, they follow different naming schemes. Most packages have "networkmanager" written as one word: * networkmanager * networkmanager-openconnect * networkmanager-pptp * networkmanager-vpnc * networkmanager-strongswan * networkmanager-openvpn * ... However, some packages have "network-manager" written with a hyphen: * network-manager-applet * network-manager-sstp And then there is * nm-connection-editor * nm-cloud-setup which follows it's own naming scheme of having "networkmanager" redacted to "nm". Unfortunately, that makes it hard to remember how each package is called. Therefore there's always some guessing or searching involved when installing a network manager related feature. Of course, this is not the biggest issue of all time, but I think it's more complicated than it should be. Can we simplify the naming conventions of those packages to use one common scheme that's easy to remember instead of having multiple coexisting ones? Thanks a lot in advance, LuKaRo

All / Maxime, With the nut build option setting: --with-cgipath=/usr/share/nut/cgi \ when using apache with the default /srv/http/cgi-bin location, how are you supposed to access the cgi files in /usr/share/nut/cgi "Safely"? I have the entire /usr/share/nut/html directory protected by a dbm database file manipulated with dbmmanage, so to reach the <Directory> you must authenticate. That said, the only way I can make the cgi scripts work is by setting Options FollowSymLinks in the <Directory> for "/srv/http/cgi-bin" after symlinking (e.g. ln -s /usr/share/nut/cgi /srv/http/cgi-bin/nut) Is this safe? Arch Linux is a fantastic distribution. It should remain exactly that: a computer operating system for technical users. Politics should not be part of the project. Recently, the Arch reddit logo was changed to a rainbow. This is for "pride month". It is forcing a political view on all of the users who did not ask for this. Many of us don't care about the views of the developers or moderators as long as we continue to enjoy Arch. It's very disheartening to see whoever moderates that reddit doing this. We just want to use Arch. In many cultures outside of Europe or the US, this is not welcome at all. Even in those countries, not everyone wants an agenda shoved into their face.

Hi all, It was good to read the changes to Go packaging in the arch-dev-public mailing list. I'd like to bring up the viability of having Golang libraries in the official repositories. Considering the fact that multiple[0][1] versions of the same Go libraries can co-exist in the same Go codebase ... is there really a need for the libraries to exist in the official repositories? There may well be a situation in the future where some Go binary requires multiple versions of the same library, but only the latest version exists in the repositories. Good evening, I'm trying to make usbgard work. I created the initial rules set with usbguard generate-policy > /etc/usbguard/rules.conf and started the usbguard.service. Now I testing it with a USB flash drive but am failing to make it work. [arch-general] Irritating bug in outdated version of gnome-flashback

The current version of gnome-flashback in the repositories has a bug with taking screenshots to the clipboard using the keyboard shortcut. After using it a couple times, pasting the resulting image no longer works and crashes some targets. At the same time gnome-flashback locks up. More details in the upstream bug report: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-flashback/-/issues/50 It was fixed in 3.37.1. This is a feature I use daily, and I can imagine many others do too. gnome-flasback has been flagged outdated for a while now, and it seems the maintainer, Balló György has been inactive for some time. I gave up on foldingathome-beta and installed the foldingathome package. A little more information was in that package for setup. The client was able to find an nvidia GEFORCe gpu on the machine so I enabled the foldingathome-nvidia service and afterwards ran systemctl status foldingathome and no errors this time and the system was given 500,000 steps and had completed 25,000 of them by the end of the status information. If this doesn't break I may be able to put it on a second computer and double my meeger contribution to this effort. --

Is foldingathome-beta looking for the gpu on the motherboard or video card in my computer? When I searched this machine I got an intel with a 9 series number after it along with nvidia nouveau and radeon graphics if memory serves. The radeon graphics would have come up since the video monitor is a radeon 3 series if memory serves. If I can figure out which one to use my guess is delete all other incorrect lines in /opt/fah/GPUs.txt and maybe I get past this gpu error. I'm running foldingathome-beta on command line and was running foldingathome-noroot earlier until that package got replaced by this beta package. --

Hi, a box running Arch on AsRock QC5000-ITXPH has some issues with it's ethernet chipset since several days: https://dpaste.org/hVfk Network is stuck then and it somehow resumes after 1 hour or so. I stumbled upon https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=199549, but changing the powermanagement did not help. The issue appears with 5.6.x and also 5.4.x LTS, now even the DHCP request failed after rebooting with 5.6.11. As it appears with both kernel branches, I hardly believe it's a kernel issue. All, I just read the article about the major change coming to systemd 245 at: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/linux-home-directory-management-is-abo… What is terrifying is the SSH Problem. 9/10 hosts I interact with I do via ssh. And do we really need LUKS encrypted volumes for every user's $HOME directory? Sure for enterprise setups, etc.. but will there be a way to simply keep a normal unencrypted /home. Dear Arch users, I am Ramkumar from India, i use Archlinux with i3 and no login manager. When i try to shutdown the machine, it throws lot of warnings about ethernet port and etc.. and when turning on the machine and open an application, say firefox, it shows like it has been crashed as if it was a forceful shutdown. But i checked it whether firefox is closed before shutting down and it was closed. I am worried whether i am doing some nasty things while shutting the machine down. All, With the update to inkscape 1.0, the toolbars no longer fit on the screen and ellipsize reducing the number of toolbar icons by 1/3 (from 24 to 17 visible on laptop display). Hello, I have question to the combination of inotify and rsync. I want that my documents folder sync with other maschine if the host is up. So I find this soulution in net. So I place the script in home folder, place systemd service file in home and run it with systemd --user. The result is same. When run ssh samsung it works, when I run sync_docs.sh in shell it works. Hello everyone, My desktop machine didn't shut down cleanly yesterday after I did system upgrades, hanging at closing my dmcrypt devices. I power-cycled after 10 minutes, and today it wouldn't boot, again hanging at the [encrypt]-hook. I tried cryptsetup open, luksOpen, luksDump and isLuks from a fresh 2020-05-01 archiso, all with --debug, with multiple encrypted internal drives, all hanging after printing the header checksum. So I couldn't access any of my drives anymore. dd if=/dev/sdxy of=/dev/null worked fine for all of them, though. I already thought my header got corrupted somehow and my data was lost, until I remembered I had some output in dmesg for several months now: `rdrand gives funky smelling output`. I gave it a shot and updated my BIOS, and hooray, my system booted up just fine. Back in my system, I noticed cryptsetup 2.3.1-1 -> 2.3.1-3 and linux 5.6.7 -> 5.6.8 in yesterday's update. So probably something has changed in that update that causes an issue connected with the old BIOS version. This was definitely not the solution I expected, and therefore I want to share it, as others might be affected as well. My Mainboard is an Asus Prime X470-Pro, CPU is AMD Ryzen 7-3900x. Updating to BIOS v5406 fixed the issue. So if you get similar issues, don't worry, your data might not be lost :) Kind regards, LuKaRo

All, we have a group of Arch desktop clients that mount their user homes and group shares through nfsv3 over udp from an OmniOS server. After today's update (the last one was on 9 Mar) the machine will not nfs-mount, complaining about illegal udp, grpid, int mount options, and the kernel spits out a NFSV4: Unsupported transport protocol udp although nothing on this installation anywhere ever has used nfsv4 until now, and /etc/default/autofs explicitly specifies nfsv3. Editing /etc/nfsmount.conf (which was in default state until now) accordingly did not make a difference. I couldn't find any nfs related Arch news items. What did I miss? The beta runs and complains it can't find opencl driver running on slot 1. Entirely reasonable since the computer foldingathome uses is running on slot 2. Does a way exist to redirect opencl to run on slot 2 where foldingathome can use it and return a status report with no failures and no errors in it? Me using a screen reader I don't have much occasion to do things with video drivers. The monitor I use is compatible with opencl-mesa not nvidia if that helps. --

I have noticed an issue that update of dhcpcd in the past day or two causes the server running dhcpd to hand out a different IP. The resolv.conf is unchanged - unlike the bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/66313?project=1&string=dhcpcd&order=dateope… The fact that the IP changes isn't itself a problem, the fact that it has not behaved like this before is. The side-effect impacts updating Arch boxes across a LAN. You may find yourself unable to connect after a kernel update and reboot when the box comes back up with a different IP. The problem being any local IP caching on the machine being used to do remote updates won't see the change until the lease expires. (or the local nameresolution cache is flushed/restarted -- depends on box and distro used to access the remote Arch box). Has anybody else seen this? Also, if you know, is this just a one-off change with the new package that won't repeat each time dhcpcd or the kernel is updated going forward? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I figured it might work since I had configured foldingathome-client earlier and had a valid configuration but no such luck. So I will be cleaning this package and all predecessor packages and associated data from this system. --

Hi, I have a bridge configured through systemd-networkd and a wifi AP with hostpad. The wifi AP interface is attached to the bridge by systemd-networkd. There is a ordering cycle that is: network.target -> systemd-networkd.service -> hostapd.service -> network.target (btw I used https://github.com/jantman/misc-scripts/blob/master/dot_find_cycles.py to helpful debug it.) The unit file of the hostapd has (only pasted relevant info): [Unit] *After=network.target* [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target That's it. Bu if I create a /etc/systemd/system/hostapd.service.d/after.conf with: [Unit] After= *After=network-pre.target* It never overrides the cycle (it's read but the After is not overridden). All, I'm not sure when this changed, but in the past when I plugged in a USB flash drive, I could just watch a tail of the journal to see the connection and device details. I tried that again today and nothing appeared in the journal, though the device was seen and assigned /dev/sde (and /dev/sde1) which I got from cat /proc/partitions. I have also added the kernel parameter audit=0 per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Audit_framework to disable the audit messages in the journal. I don't recall the USB messages being audit messages before (they could have been, I just don't remember), but now nothing is shown. Is the lack of output in the journal on USB drive plug-in due to the audit=0 parameter, and if so, is there any way to restore the journal messages on USB plug-in without enabling audit? -- David C. Hi all, As a followup to my mail on arch-dev-public [1] I've just moved hyperkitty [2], mailman3 [3] and postorius [4] from [community-testing] to [community]. If you're running your own mailman instance, you have probably already read up on what the python3 based mailman-core aka. mailman3 has to offer in comparison to the current python2 based mailman. TL;DR: The mailman3 package will replace mailman [5] at some point (latest when we drop python2 from the repositories). Eventually mailman3 will be renamed to mailman. Currently mailman3 and mailman conflict. Mailman3 is modular: For archiving you need to use hyperkitty, for web-based management and signup you need to use postorius. **DO BACKUPS BEFORE TESTING!!!** While in theory all of these "should just work", they haven't been tested thoroughly by many Arch users yet (AFAIK). This is where you come in! Please **backup your existing mailman archives and data** before attempting to switch and take mailman3 for a test drive! Mailman3 and mailman(2) can not be installed side-by-side, as they make use of the same directories and the same system user. Neither mailman3, nor hyperkitty or postorius provide setuid [6] binaries (the current mailman does) while each provides a separate user. This means that managing those applications sudo or su has to be used. Hyperkitty (archiving) and postorius (user management) are both Django [7] applications, that are being installed system wide. This implies getting to know how to setup and use these applications. On the upside: This means archiving and configuration of mailman3 can be done on separate hosts (if the need arises)! When testing, upgrading and migrating I would like to invite you to extend the existing wiki pages for mailman3's setup [8], postorius' hosting [9] and hyperkitty's hosting [10] sections, wherever you use something that is not covered by the wiki yet. The more diverse the setup documentation is, the better for all of us! Closing, I'm of course also interested in any package improvement suggestions or package bug reports that you might have. According to the instructions in [1] «it is necessary to exclude /dev/snd/ from Firefox' sandboxing by adding it to the comma-separated list in about:config → security.sandbox.content.write_path_whitelist», but right now I'm using '$ apulse firefox' without that exclusion and seems to work fine. Maybe that's outdated? (My system is updated.) 2. Hi all, I am using Jenux which is a basic installer for arch Linux, but any I have notest that for some reason when using thunderbird with orca, Time and day are spoken in 24 hour format with year, month day followed by the time in 24 hour format. My time zone is set correctly. For example 2020/2020/jfirstjf 15:jj. Any one know how to switch to udds format? It's driving me crazy. If I use orca to get the time it is spoken correctly. So every update of linux kernels and modules which need mkinitpcio to be executed, takes too much unnecessary time (maybe 2 min) which could be handled if it executes on multi threads of CPU. Actually this 2 minutes bothers me this much that I'm emailing Arch General Mailing List is because I'm afraid my Arch would be broken if my laptop shuts down in this process and I have to rescue it by live USB. I have read the mkinitpcio wiki page and I can't find anything regarding this matter: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio I've checked and my cpu usage and it shows me that it uses maximum power of a core when mkinitpcio is running, so I assumed it could be helped if it runs on multi threads. So my question is why it doesn't execute over all threads or at least have the option to do that? Does it help if it gets executed over multi threads or the bottleneck is somewhere else?

After installing Samba 4.12.x, I added only this in [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf to get access to one of my old SMB1 only network based HDD: server min protocol = CORE client min protocol = CORE After a reboot, I got access to my share, but every single time I want to copy / create a new file, a folder is created! Of course, I cannot delete this folder. I have recently installed nvidia-dkms as I use linux-hardened, although I have installed linux package as well, but I always boot to linux-hardened. Anyway I've noticed that nvidia-dkms increases pkgrel everytime linux package gets upgraded, why is that so? Taken from NVIDIA wiki: Custom kernel If you are using a custom kernel, compilation of the Nvidia kernel modules can be automated with DKMS. Install the nvidia-dkms package (or a specific branch). The Nvidia module will be rebuilt after every Nvidia or kernel update thanks to the DKMS pacman hook. Correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't mean that nvidia module will be rebuilt after kernel update thanks to the DKMS pacman hook? So why should nvidia-dkms upgrades?

Hello list, I have a vexing problem with an Apache Virtual Host setup. In a nutshell, I have verified that apache is listening on port 80 and I have double checked my virtual host setup. Indeed, I can reach by IP address and the connection is logged under the virtual host. However, when I try to use the domain name, I get a connection refused error. The httpd.conf file is pretty much stock with the exception of uncommenting the userdir stuff and the vhosts line at the bottom. I pretty much followed the article on the wiki. I am leaning towards a DNS issue but my domain properly resolves to the correct IP address. The IP address is 149.28.50.65. I can't seem to get the screen brightness up and down keys working on my laptop. (A new HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4.) Controlling the screen brightness programmatically does work. I.e., I'm able to set up mappings in my DE (XFCE) for specific key combos to call out to the "light" application and increase/decrease brightness that way. But the built-in brightness function keys (F3 and F4, without pressing fn) don't work at all. xev doesn't register any keypress when I hit those keys, and evtest always reports an unknown/wrong scan and key code: Event: time 1583360957.168127, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------ Event: time 1583360959.602902, type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN), value 81 Event: time 1583360959.602902, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 465 (KEY_FN_ESC), value 1 I've been trying to debug this for several weeks now, but without success. I'm also pretty sure that I saw these keys working about 2 weeks ago. But although I've tried rolling back to versions of some key packages (e.g., kernel, libinput, and systemd) from that date range, I've not been able to get them working again. I've searched for bugs and forum posts on the issue, but haven't found anything that fixes it. I've also tried mucking with some of the suggestions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Map_scancodes_to_keycodes but no joy there either. I'd file a bug on this, but I have no idea which package is causing the issue. Hi. The wiki states that database signatures for pacman are currently a work in progress. It's been that way for a long time, so I assume there is no "progress" happening. What is currently in the way of this much-needed security feature to be fully implemented? Right now, pacman is taking untrusted input from the internet as root. That's very bad. Most of the comments I've seen say that an attacker could hold back vulnerable packages, but this is assuming the attacker does not have bigger plans. The pacman tool is not immune to bugs in the way it parses the database files. It has no privilege separation in the download/parsing code as far as I can see (apt and others have had this for a long time) so it's really an even more dire situation. Pacman should not perform any operations as root until it has verified the signature of all files being used to install/upgrade the packages, but it currently does everything (downloading, verifying, etc) as root. I'd like to get a discussion going about how and when these two issues could be resolved so that all Arch users can be safer. Thanks.

Currently, I am using linux 5.5.11.arch1-1. Since this version, I am unable to use my USB storage drives. Nothing shows up in dmesg when inserting the storage drive and also lsblk does not detect the drive. lsusb also does not detect the drive. I have rebooted my system after the kernel update, more than once actually, so I am sure that that is not the problem. Would anybody know what could potentially be the problem? Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure how/why (or when it started) but pulseaudio is disabling auto-mute mode on my laptop. Normally when you plug in headphones, speakers get muted. However, every time PA starts up, it disables that auto-mute feature. (I then have to go into alsamixer and manually re-enable it.) Not a huge issue, but definitely a nuisance. It's definitely PA that's responsible: if I enable auto-mute, then do "pulseaudio --kill", the setting immediately gets disabled. I've followed the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Troubleshooting#Auto-Mute_M… and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture#Disa… - i.e., change the setting to enabled, and then alsactl store. However, that's obviously having no impact, since pulseaudio later *overrides* the alsa setting when it starts up. Anyone else having similar issue? Or have any idea what the issue is / how to fix? Looking at the following screenshot, it seems that my 64-bit Live CD booted in 32-bit mode. What I am trying to say is that the 64-bit Linux kernel on the Live CD boots up in 32-bit mode (my guess), and then tried to execute purely 64-bit binaries, which results in a kernel panic. Please advise me on how I can resolve this issue and produce a working Live CD of my LFS system without kernel panic. [arch-general] Can't change tty, any ideas?

Hey hey, I'm running on a 5.4.24-rt15-1-rt #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT kernel and since I've been back - after a day - and rebooted my machine, Ican't change ttys anymore. I checked the keyboard with showkey, both alt and the f-keys come through. No job is overtaxing the CPU. It's almost down to 0-2% CPU usage. The keyboard is connected via USB, I had PS/2 keyboard issues a long time ago so switched. The HUB is working, other devices - including my braille display - work flawlessly. I'm currently typing this mail on my system. I know, this probably isn't strictly a matter for this list, but it is a good pool of knowledgeable and helpful people. So, can anyone suggest probable causes, methods to hunt the bug? [arch-general] Problem with reflector

Hi all, I'm trying to install reflector to manage pacman mirrors. Upon install, everything seems to be working, but actually running the reflector command says that the python file. The PKGBUILD installs the file to the system python, but the python binary that is higher in the path is the one installed by asdf-vm, which uses pyenv in the background. Because this has its own directory, the file is not installed to this location, so when the reflector command invokes python, it invokes the one installed by asdf-vm, which obviously cannot find the file Any ideas on how to fix this? [arch-general] How did spyder/python-spyder-kernels downgrade version?

I've got spyder-4.0.1-2 and python-spyder-kernels-1.8.1-1 installed. They're not self-compiled, they just came in as regular repo updates (on 22nd February 2020). However the current repo version of both is 3.3.6-2 and 0.5.2-4. Looks like a rollback of spyder related packages took place? Shouldn't epoch be updated in that case? I have [testing] enabled but I don't know how to check if the current installed version is from community-testing.

lAll, After update to 5.5 kernel and rebuild of virtualbox from the 5.2.36 and the latest testcase build for 5.2.37 (all kernel modules build and load fine) https://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-5.2.37-135942-Linux… Arch guests fail to run on Arch host. network device enp0s3 not found, udev kernel rules fail, and the boot never complete. This post was really surprising for me and sad but also quite confusing because I don't understand how lack of some minor feature can involve nuclear option of removing dominant and most tech-advanced browser on the market from Arch repos. I bet most users won't even notice lack of it and some may even welcome removal of so called "spyware". Those who treat geolocation as critical feature may choose different browser but forcing everyone out of they beloved one for this particular reason seems like overreaction to me. Yours sincerely G.
