[arch-general] Catalyst and GNOME 3.14

Hi everyone. Is anyone else having issues trying to start GNOME 3.14 with the Catalyst driver for AMD/ATI cards? I've got one of those laptops with the dual AMD cards (discrete and onboard), and the open-source drivers have never worked for me, forcing me to use Catalyst. With the latest update to GNOME 3.14, trying to log in results in the fail screen, and the system logs report that gnome-shell has been trying to restart too many times. The best my Google-fu can discover is that it's due to Wayland being a core part of GNOME… or something.

[arch-general] imagemagick 6.8.9.8-1 is slower than 6.8.9.7-1

After upgrading to imagemagick 6.8.9.8-1, I've found it to be a lot slower than 6.8.9.7-1. I only get this issue when downloading from the repositories or using the PKGBUILD, not when compiling using the instructions at imagemagic.org. I've discussed the issue with the ImageMagick developers, which you can find at http://www.imagemagick.org/discourse-server/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26369&sid=a…. Even when trying to convert a 500x500 image to 100x100, it appears that an image that is 2048x1536 is created. I've tried this on multiple Arch machines with the same result.

The package fails since one or more files fails validity checks with md5s. I have irssi working over here but was asked to install ircii and picked this version to install and the package failed validity checks twice. I tried the download twice using yaourt -S ircii-current since I wasn't sure if it was a network transmission problem but this one appears to be a defective files problem. jude <jdashiel(a)shellworld.net> Twitter: @jdashiel

https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/qupzilla/ IMO Qupzilla should be removed from the official Arch repositories. Qupzilla was the browser I used. The latest update comes with the information that the old data doesn't fit to Qupzilla's new design, so users lose the complete history. Such a fundamental attitude from upstream IMO is absolutely intolerably.

Pacman now warns when trying to uninstall a package that is an optdepend for another, however, I was wondering if we could take this a step further, and have a flag to list "packages that are not mandatory OR optional dependencies for other packages". A typical usage is: pacman -Rnsu $(pacman -Qdtq) This uninstalls any leftover dependencies, INCLUDING optional dependencies. I'd love to exclude these, but there's no programatical way to obtain a list of packages that are "installed as dependencies and not mandatory or optional dependencies for other". Are there any plans to add such a flag? Maybe "-tt"? Is there any interest in this on behalf of anyone else? -- Hugo Osvaldo Barrera A: Because we read from top to bottom, left to right. I noticed the announcement today that Ubuntu now supports Netflix streaming, due to new features recently added to the Chrome browser. https://insights.ubuntu.com/2014/10/10/watch-netflix-in-ubuntu-today/ Does this work on Arch's version of Chrome as well? [arch-general] How to suppress --noconfirm when building with makechrootpkg

Hi all, When trying to build libreoffice-extension-writer2latex [1] using makechrootpkg I noticed that when several alternatives are provided for a specific package, say libreoffice-common, pacman always chooses the first one. This is due to the option --noconfirm that is passed in the chain makepkg -> pacman. This sounds reasonable, but how do I test a package against another alternative (e.g. libreoffice-still-common instead of libreoffice-fresh)? I know I can install packages using -I, but that's rather cumbersome when trying to build against several alternatives. Hi all, As an experiment in building packages in a clean way, I tried to build libreoffice-extension-writer2latex [1] using makechrootpkg according to the wiki [2]. First I created a new chroot in ~/chroot using mkarchroot $CHROOT/root base-devel Then I made sure the chroot was up to date using arch-nspawn $CHROOT/root pacman -Syu After this I ran makechrootpkg with the following options makechrootpkg -ncr $CHROOT When the build function calls libreoffice to convert an .odt document to a pdf file, I got the following error: /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/oosplash: error while loading shared libraries: libXinerama.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Apparently the splash screen needs libxinerama. After running makechrootpkg -ncr $CHROOT -I /var/cache/pacman/pkg/libxinerama-1.1.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz I got another error, i.e. /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libcups.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory However, I think this is rather an edge case, as we're trying to convert a document (but don't we do this once in a while, anyway?). After also adding libcups, the package built correctly. This leads to my question: shouldn't libreoffice-fresh also depend on libxinerama? And perhaps also on libcups? If so, I'll file a bug report. The build system is Apache Ant, and I can change the JVM it uses by setting JAVA_HOME for makepkg, but even then I can't assume that Java 8 is java-8-openjdk. For example jre from the AUR also provides java-runtime=8. I feel like the archlinux-java script should be able to get/set the default Java **per version**. That would make it much easier to handle all this.
