[arch-general] Atheros AR9462 - kernel upgrade warning

A little heads up for Atheros AR9462 owners. It seems that the latest kernel renders AR9462 (and maybe some other cards using ath9k module) WiFi close to unusable due to network connection being dropped continuously. The problem seems to be not Arch-specific; there is an upstream report for this: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215698 Upgrade with caution; keep old kernel package cached. Rolling back to linux-5.16.3 worked well for me. Regards, Danila Kiver.

[arch-general] FS#73728 - Installing mandoc uninstalls certain doc-only packages (dependency issue)

Greetings. Some packages are currently affected by Arch bug FS#73728[1]. It seems that not all of the relevant package maintainers were added to the bug report, so I figured that I'd send the bug status to a mailing list and copy whoever is missing. I'm not sure if this is relevant to arch-dev-public, so I'm sending it to arch-general. Apologies if it's not the correct list. Here's a partial quoting of the issue[1]: > Both man-db and mandoc provide "man" and also conflict with each other. > > And there are documentation-only packages which depend on "man-db" rather > than on just "man". > > This prevents installing both mandoc (instead of man-db) and these > documentation-only packages at the same time. > > Note: "man-db" provides only man(1) and related tools; the "default" man > pages themselves are provided by "man-pages". So the output looks different, but at least the main content is present on both. [arch-general] Use Grub with Preloader

Hi all, I was reinstalling Arch after an unlucky SDD wipe due to warranty. I reinstalled Arch and then proceeded to use Secure Boot via Preloader. I followed the steps at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface/Secu… But I got an error from Grub saying: *error: verification requested but nobody cares* I decided to re-create the Grub binary with the TPM module via *grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=ESP_DIR --modules="tpm" --bootloader-id=BOOTLOADER* But that didn't do the trick. Do I have to do something peculiar in order to make Grub to work? I have a problem with bugs.archlinux.org. I think there is a bug with the software powering the site. I tried to search how to report, and failed. It is tricky to choose the right search expression. Should I report to bugs.flyspary.org? I am not related to bugs.archlinux.org adminstrators. I couldn't find contact information of the administrators. Should I email webmaster(a)archlinux.org? What should I do? I don't mind posting a description of the problem here. -- u34

[arch-general] Updating a (local) repository based on dependency changes

Hey there, Through the latest update in glibc an issue / question emerged for me and maybe someone on this list has some input for me how to solve this: We do have a repository with custom built packages (for example a custom version of ffmpeg we need for internal purposes)… These packages obviously do have dependencies on libraries and break when there is a change in a library. In this case: "version `GLIBC_2.34' not found". Is there anyone who solved this already? How is it solved in the Archlinux core / community repo? What is your trigger to rebuild packages and prevent running into some command not finding its dependencies? So how do you know when to rebuild [some binary package depending on glibc] without manually keeping track of the glibc version you've built the package against and then triggering the re-build when any of the underlying library changes its version? How does the Archlinux community/core/extra build system keep track of this and knows when to rebuild ffmpeg because glibc changed? Thanks in advance for any input! Hi, Now that glibc 2.35 is available, could we enable and ship the compiled form of the new C.UTF-8 locale in glibc by default in Arch Linux? >From the glibc 2.35 release notes (https://sourceware.org/pipermail/libc-alpha/2022-February/136040.html) > * Support for the C.UTF-8 locale has been added to glibc. The locale > supports full code-point sorting for all valid Unicode code points. I just got my brightness keys working and I'm looking for a pretty minimal "brightness indicator" to show me a rough percentage. I am explicitly trying to avoid any Gnome or KDE dependencies, and would prefer not to use the AUR, if there's a good one in the main repos. [arch-general] Link libutil.so not in glibc 2.35-2.

Hi, I ran into an issue building an application that complained libutil.so was not found. It's not in /usr/lib indeed with glibc 2.35-2, while it was a link to libutil.so.1 -> libutil-2.32.so in glibc 2.32. Just creating the link fixed the build issue. I'm wondering if it's a new library deployment scheme, or it the link was missed during packaging. Regards.

[arch-general] Linux server crash causing router switch to stop working

Been experiencing a weird issue several times recently that's got me stumped. A couple of weeks ago, my entire home network went dead right in the middle of a zoom call. Same problem happened again late last night. The problem is intermittent/occasional: everything runs without issue for several days, then suddenly crashes. I figured the issue was a problem with my wifi router, but after much debugging I don't think that's the case. I have a new (Arch) linux server I built a few weeks ago. What seems to be happening is that my server crashes for some reason - and then looks like it's causing the ethernet LAN switch inside my router to stop working. (I verified that when I unplug the server's network cable the router starts working again, and when I plug it back in the router stops.) My best guess as to what's happening is that when the server crashes it's somehow either flooding the network, or sending out invalid network packets, and so making the router inoperable. I have no idea what could cause this, though, or how to fix it. (Or even if this is definitely the issue.) I also have no way to know if this is an issue with my server hardware vs. say an issue in a recent kernel upgrade, since the server is so new. Server is running Arch, and is kept very up to date. It's using the on-board LAN chip on the mobo - Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE (network module r8169, RTL8125B chip/firmware). Router is a Netgear R8000, running dd-wrt (r47097). Any suggestions welcome! Hi! Arch Linux has become my favourite pastime and passion and I'd like to donate to the project. I have looked at the options (card payment or PayPal) and haven't found the possibility to hide my real name as I am really not that keen on sharing my name on the public list of donors: https://archlinux.org/donate/ Unfortunately, I am not a James Smith or Caron Lewis, but have a uniquely identifiable combination of first and last name, that means anyone could look me up on Google, because surely there exists no other name like this in the world. This is actually what I tried: I picked some uniquely looking names from the donors page, put them into Google and of course archlinux.org shows up. You may call me fussy, but I don't like the idea of my real name being linked to any of my actual hobbies/interests online. It should be nobody's business to know what my hobbies are (employers, ex-partners, I-am-gonna-say-it-yes-the-government)! I get it that archlinux.org wants to show appreciation by publicly sharing the list of donors, but I do not want it! Please, I beg you, do enable donors to opt out of being on the public list!
