[arch-general] [Classroom] pre-announcement and poll for Python for Beginners

Hello, If you are interested in learning the basics of Python and are confused where to start or you know someone that could use Python in their work or hobbies, there is an upcoming class. Notes are available online.[1] There will be 5 or so sessions, each lasting 2 hours, to be held on different days. The format is similar to past classes[2] and this class will be held on IRC with logs published afterwards. New for Classroom, this class will have a simultaneous live stream accessed through YouTube which will be later saved and archived (with subtitles). As attendants could be from different time zones, there will be a poll to schedule each session. I am unable to send to arch-dev-public for some reason so i am send my reply to arch general. I think the filesystem can be split, the sysuser/tempfile will be in the independent package. I do believe we seriously need a meta package for some parts of base. Systemd, Glibc, PAM, Filesystem, Coreutils, mkinitcpio ,Util linux and linux firmware are obviously need to be moved to a metapackage. This helps since it makes it easier during major transitions in the future. Stuff like editors, bootladers, kernels (efi partions when dual booting has space for a single kernel), snail are optional and remain as a group. The meta package takes place of all other package of the base group.

Hey Ray (and all interested), thought I'd share an updated PKGBUILD for Ardour. Please update to the latest version! 5.9 is unusable, when working with OSC to control it (segfaults). [arch-general] gnome fix needed

I discovered this and was able to recover, and think gnome could do with a fix. I put together a script to completely erase gnome from this system and for the most part that script worked really well. The exception was that it also removed wpa_supplicant since I had cascading and recursive and unneeded packages being removed. Without wpa_supplicant on a system that system in command line mode isn't getting out onto the internet. I put wpa_supplicant back on the system using the install disk I have and the internet at least is working correctly. I was trying to get orca talking on the system and couldn't do it so figured it's best if I start with a clean slate which is the reason for the removal script. I'll run it for xorg and mate before I'm finished and try to get all of this stuff running again without questionable configuration files on the system. I think I may get lucky. According to email from another list, apparently neither gdm nor lightdm will get us screen reader users to a talking orca, but xorg should get that job done. If someone has the time, please run sudo -H Xorg --configure and let me know if that command errors out with a segmentation fault at address 0x50 or any other address or if you get a configuration file generated. It could be xorg configuration on this system is also messed up beyond repair and I'll have to clean that out too. --

[arch-general] Detect broken DHCP setup

Good morning, tl;dr: I was wondering what could be the best way to check a DHCP setup. Briefly: our landlord provides us Wifi through a telephonic company service. However, the routers placed in the building after some time lose the DHCP settings. While I can fix it on my computer with a reconnection, such a method is not applicable to my Raspberrys. On one I have Raspbian, on the other ArchLinuxARM. While I found a possible solution for the Raspbian, for ALARM I have some doubt. On that device I am using *systemd-networkd + systemd-resolved* for the network setup. However, I saw no real method to check if the DHCP configuration is valid (while NetworkManager provides an element through DBus inspection). Does anyone has some knowledge about it? To be fair, I am asking as I am sure the 'ping Google DNSs and if it is screwed restart the networking, use this as a cron job' will likely work, but I was interested in a more elegant way to approach it (like the NetworkManaged DBus introspection). [arch-general] Possible error while refreshing pacman keys

Running either of the commands 'pacman-key --populate archlinux' or 'pacman-key --refresh-keys', outputs 'signature(s) not checked due to a missing key(s)'. Performed a fresh install today with the latest iso and the error stays. Checked and confirmed that all the 6 master keys and their signing keys were already added.

[arch-general] 'gcc' vs 'c++' for compiling c++ files

Compiling a sample xxx.cc file using 'c++' command compiles fine whereas 'gcc' command outputs errors. A whole bunch of 'undefined reference to's. Am i wrong to assume that 'gcc' command would use the file extension and call the appropriate compiler.

Howdy, I recently was playing with a Centos server. One of the things I found interesting about the experience is the information presented on login: Last login: Tue Aug 29 17:38:48 EDT 2017 on pts/0 Last failed login: Tue Aug 29 17:47:31 EDT 2017 from 116.31.116.18 on ssh:notty There were 37 failed login attempts since the last successful login.
