Hello TUs, I'd have a question, what do you do when a bugreport occured for a package which package hasn't got actual Maintainer, or I can't see well. To who do you assign that bugreport? 1. FS#16965 - [preload] init script fails to stop cleanly Maintainer: Jarosław Świerczyński - He isn't a TU anymore, if I heard well. (but he is in the Trusted User list) 2. FS#16969 - [mget] fails to run (due to too new ruby?) Maintainer: Alexander Fehr <pizzapunk gmail com> - I can't see his name in the list, but I can see his name on the fellowers list. Here's a script to check the architecture-independence of a binary package. It only checks to see whether or not a tarball contains files that start with the ELF magic number, bytes 0x7f E L F. Maybe someone will find it useful. -- Chris

Hello, The package 'llvm' is an orphaned [communuity] package. I'd like to request that it me moved to the AUR so I can maintain it (I have an update and overhaul ready) and I can also create a 'clang' package for it. (split package for llvm AND clang) Then it can be adopted by a TU if they want to bring it back into [community]. Thanks :)

I can't even remember the name of the package, but it has codecs and ffmpeg as part of its name. Now, _why_ was it removed alongside the chromium packages? It was unrelated to the browser package naming issue. I'm just curious to know whether it was a mistake or a decision based upon a certain resolution.

Hi, I need cuda for some of my applications, and just realized that nvidia has outsourced the cuda driver to another package. I could easily download this driver and install it, however it would be great, if I could use aur. I have seen some packages containing "cuda" in the name, but the package "cuda" just seems to be a meta package, which depends on cuda-toolkit and cuda-sdk, which I don't need at all. So is there any package I can install just to gain the possibility to use cuda, but not to install the sdk (nor the toolkit)? -- Best regards, Karol Babioch <karol(a)babioch.de>

Hello, I see that the package 'llvm' is in [community], is orphaned, and is out-of-date. I've spent considerable time working on packaging LLVM and its add-ons, the Clang C-family compiler front-end and the GCC frontend. Therefore, I'd like to help package LLVM. I already wrote a PKGBUILD for v2.6 of LLVM (the package we have is v2.5), and it also has a lot of fixes and niceties. I'd like to discuss how best to proceed with LLVM -- whether Clang should be included in the llvm package or as an alternate package of LLVM and Clang, 'llvm-clang', stuff like that. In fact, what may work best is if llvm could be dropped into the AUR, where I will then adopt it and update it (and potentially add 'llvm-clang' and such as is decided), and then if a TU wants it in [community] (which would make sense), it can be adopted by a TU. I am the maintainer of "vimperator-git". That project now uses mercurial (hg) rather than git, so I have uploaded a new package named "vimperator-hg", and now I would like to have "vimperator-git" removed from AUR. Thanks! mfwitten P.S. Under the current conventions, it is necessary to change the package name whenever the underlying version control system (VCS) is changed. Perhaps there should be a policy that encourages a more general suffix for such packages: "vimperator-vcs".

Hi. I was dumb enough to lose my AUR password. Left a request on the forum three days ago, PM'd the guy ('wonder') who did resets for other people earlier with no luck so far. Looking for a kind soul with enough administrative rights to help me. Back to the list topic, I've created a few packages for cross-compiling 32bit apps (namely, cross32-binutils, lib32-glibc-devel, and cross32-gcc, I'll upload them as soon as I recover my password). I use these packages to compile a version of lib32-alsa-lib (will be uploaded as lib32-alsa-lib-fixed) that looks for plugins in /opt/lib32/usr/lib/alsa-lib instead of /usr/lib/alsa-lib (and thus doesn't crash your wine/skype/etc). Feel free to use them when you encounter 32bit apps that have hardcoded paths for dynamic code loading.

Hi, Kgmailnotifier has not been updated in 16 months. The AUR PKGBUILD still depends on Qt3 and KDE3. I have emailed him/her about two weeks ago, but not received an answer. Moreover, if I did not overlook anything, the maintainer has not updated any of his/her packages in a rather long time. Kgmailnotifier has a new stable version that depends on Qt4 and KDE4. Hi First of all, I have [testing] enabled and I'm on 32bit. I wanted to take a look at these two alternatives of matlab. Both of them don't work here, both are complaining about a missing library error while loading shared libraries: libgfortran.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After installing gcc-fortran it worked, so it seems like we need a rebuild here with corrected dependencies for [testing] (octave) and [community-testing] (scilab) Greetz Army

I own all of those packages, and since the website for soho has been down for awhile now, the package no longer builds. Also, soho is the only thing that depends on those zope packages, so they would be unnecessary. I also don't personally use these packages at all anymore so I don't follow their releases. Hi, I would like the to help the state of the xmonad package in community, currently xmonad depends on ghc , libhaskel-x11 that's correct but if haskell-x11 or ghc get's updated before it's rebuild against this new dependencies, it might break. To fix that issue the pkgbuild could be changed so xmonad would depend on haskel-x11='version' and ghc='version' . Secondly it would also cover an out of date mirror wich could lead to 'breakage'. Here is an example of a related bugreport because haskel-x11 was updated before a rebuild of xmonad: -FS#16606 - xmonad/xmonad-contrib depend on nonexistent haskell-x11 Jelle van der Waa

I think that many packages are always maintained by Dan Griffiths (Ghost1227) and Ionut Biru (wonder). There are no problems if I assing task to both? Sometimes I assing based on "#Maintainer" field in PKGBUILD and or SVN commiter that is ok, but there are other cases that this information is not valid anymore. Thanks in advance. Hey all...I'm in the process of migrating to a new machine (and I'll finally be able to build x86_64!), so I won't be able to get anything updated until I'm set up. I've had some oddity with packaging since community's switch to SVN, but hopefully I'll get that all ironed out on the new machine. I don't think there's anything of mine that's too critical to get updated right away (nothing that can't wait a week or so). I'll post back if I continue to have problems or have questions once I'm back up and running...I'm assuming I'll have to send in a copy of my new SSH key for gerold access, and I've never done the building in a chroot before. Hi fellow TUs, I've just moved the latest pulseaudio (x86_64 only, ATM) in [community-testing] because I'd like to get some feedback before committing. I had some problems because it failed to deliver any output with the default configuration (which is _bad_), and I had to manually activate the alsa-sink and alsa-source modules in /etc/pulse/default.pa. So in short, I'd like a couple of signoffs from TUs, but every feedback on this new version is welcome.

[aur-general] Conventions on packages for cross-compiling

Hi all, I am seeking advice how to write correct PKGBUILDs for cross-compilers. The thing I am not sure about is where to install them. Trouble is that even the binary packages use different locations and I haven't found any other source where to get information from (for example, cross-arm-wince-cegcc-binutils uses prefix /opt/cegcc/ while mingw32-gcc uses /usr). So, which location would you recommend/is better? Another thing - is the correct naming convention 'cross-<arch>-<pkgname>'? I already created/uploaded cross-compiling tools for MIPS (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?O=0&K=cross-mips) before I realized that they might be wrong. hi, As you might already know , webkit-gtk and its dependency libsoup are always under heavy development . I added {libwebkit,libsoup}-newest PKGBUILDS to the AUR because libwebkit releases started to depend on development releases from libsoup(2.27.x) . With gnome 2.28.x entering extra , the *-newest packages provide the same versions available in the official repos. Should I ask for the deletion of those packages ? Or keep them around in case webkit starts to depend on libsoup 2.29.x ?

A user by the name of "Jamie" on the forum wants an AUR account with the same name: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81872 The problem is that the account is already taken but whoever owns it has never used it to upload a package or vote. If it were up to me alone, I would try to contact the owner of the account and either request that (s)he give it up if I get a response or simply switch it over otherwise. My reasoning is that it makes more sense to have the same name on the forum and the AUR (and everything else with a separate account) because it makes it easy to know who's who, which has implications for the AUR. What do the other TUs (and interested devs) think? I think this is a rare enough event to not have to worry about a flood of requests to grab matching names on the AUR. Btw, in case you're wondering, Jamie tried to post a message to the list following my suggestion on the forum but it apparently didn't get through so he asked me to do it, hence this message. In these times I was very dissapointed about myself, cause I was having problems to handle my life, my projects, and of course, Arch, then I decided to go on with less workload at least. Now, I have free time again to dedicate it to the community and the project, and my goals this time are more specific from my first application [1], this time I'd like to: a) Improve and support the python and haskell scene since I am enthusiastic of these languages b) To help others TU, or Devs (with the permission of them), to reduce their loads on community doing tests, maintaining, updating or just simply building their packages in the differents architectures (I have i686 and x86_64 but now I am using x86_64) c) Report, and close bugs from me and others TU or Devs (away or with highly load), of course with the permission of them. d) Maintain and collaborate with the Arch Project in general, writting in the wiki, random coding, etc. I talked with Evangelos Foutras a.k.a foutrelis to ask him if he would like to be my sponsor, and he accepted, so since I knew many of you when I was a TU, I hope you will recognize my skills and my dedication on this project, and even when I wasn't active (as a TU) I ever tried to be helping with the distro, and I always try to do my best overall. Hi, I have some propositions for AUR packages. Here they are : - human-themes: should be orphaned. This package hasn't been updated since December 2008. Some users posted updated PKGBUILDs in comments but didn't got an answer. - lib32-bzip2: same as human-themes. Hasn't been updated since August 2008. - bin32-kega-fusion: should be removed. I submitted this package (x86_64 only) along with kega-fusion which is a 32-bit binary. However, as I found out how to make kega-fusion PKGBUILD multi-arch, so bin32-kega-fusion is no longer needed. - mamepgui: should be orphaned. The PKGBUILD has been submitted not long ago but has many defects. It is already outdated, is i686 only and doesn't rely on compilation from sources, though possible. I flagged the package and posted a improved PKGBUILD in comments one month ago but the maintainer didn't react. I'd like to adopt this package. Thanks in advance!

The Last XMonad upgrade a few moths ago had some problems , GHC (haskell compiler ) was released before XMonad was rebuild against the new compiler causing it to potentially break. Can't the XMonad pkgbuild be changed so it sticks with the GHC version it has been build against , that would cause less trouble. Also a new XMonad release , means much haskell-x11-* , xmonad-contrib , xmobar need to be rebuild and pulled together else ghc will complain. Are the instructions on the DeveloperWiki's HOWTO Be A Packager page current? I wrote a script a while ago to handle updating packages but recently it stopped working. I also tried to add reflector but that didn't work either (yesterday). This isn't an ssh issue either as both ssh and svn connections work. I've just checked the web archive for aur-general and saw that my message(s) about nexuiz-data when through yet I can't see them or the replies too them (in sylpheed, if that matters). This hasn't been an issue before. Please cc reples to me until the issue is resolved. As for nexuiz-data, I've rebuilt the package against the latest svn checkout and it still complains (just sent another message because I couldn't see my first message on the list). It's amazing how everything goes wrong when you have absolutely no time to deal with it.

I'm having trouble getting nexuiz-data into the db. Errors found when adding packages I tried removing and re-adding the PKGBUILD, went through all of the steps again, double-checked that the correct PKGBUILD was committed, triple-checked the package's md5sum and rechecked the upload steps against both the wiki and my working scripts. I have even bumped the pkgrel and rebuilt the package on Sigurd (it's data only, all it does it download the source, move the files and repack them... no bandwidth was wasted either as it would still have been 600 MB as an upload from my machine). I've also tried removing nexuiz-data/repos/community-any several times from the svn (svn rm; svn commit) and then run 'archrelease "community-any"' again. I have no idea what to do now and would appreciate any insights. I've left the nexuiz src in my home dir on Sigurd for now in case it requires a rebuild (~/build/). The i686 and x86_64 package were both updated correctly so I really don't see what I'm doing wrong here. Thanks, Xyne

[aur-general] How to make a PKGBUILD for Kepler/Xavante?

Hi listmates, as I said in an earlier email in another thread, I always try to make a PKGBUILD for every piece of software I install. There's an exception though: the Lua webserver Xavante, which is part of the Kepler distribution (http://www.keplerproject.org/xavante/) I can set it up without Pacman that way: ftp://catwell.info/misc/arch/xavante/howto-setup.txt but I haven't found a way to make it work properly with makepkg. The problem is that the setup process run in a fakeroot leaves the string corresponding to $pkgdir in a lot of places in the resulting files, including binary files. I have tried to use sed on the resulting files but I didn't manage to get rid of it everywhere, neither to get a working package. Has somebody already given a try at packaging such an application, and are there examples of packages that deal with this kind of problem? Thanks, -- catwell

I'm the maintainer of the "surf" package in AUR, and I've discovered an annoyance in the way I've created this package. I'd like some advice on how to resolve it. This package is a web browser from suckless.org, the makers of dwm. It has very much the same coding and build style, involving a config.h file which the user is intended to customize. Most of surf's behavior is decided at compile-time by this file. I've modeled my package after the "dwm" package in community, copying the default config.h into the root of the package tarball and listing it as a local source file. build() then copies it into the unpacked source directory before compiling. This is great for users of dwm who rebuild it from ABS, as it avoids the need to modify build() in order to customize the package - the user just needs to supply their own config.h and change the md5sum for it. This doesn't work so well for my surf package, though, since that's in the AUR. Many (most?) users of AUR packages are auto-updating with helper-tools like yaourt, pbget, and similar utilities, and it's difficult to automatically pull updates to package materials when you've changed one of the files. customizepkg won't help you much either, since that can only modify the PKGBUILD, and not the config.h. It's also annoying to me as the maintainer of the package. Anyone who maintains a package that's meant to have the build customized, rather than compiled as-is, will end up actually maintaining two copies - one "stock" version to submit to AUR, and one customized version for personal use. Obviously, none of these issues are show-stoppers. But they are annoying, and I don't packages I maintain to annoy my end-users. What can I do to make this package more comfortable for the average AUR user? Is software that expects compile-time customization just fundamentally not very compatible with the auto-update concept?

Hello Fellow Arch Users, Ya know, we don't always have control over what an upstream project is called. Take for example: The R Project for Statistical Computing http://www.r-project.org/ As can be clearly seen, the project's name is R. Yes, that is a CAPITAL R ! So I've got a PKGBUILD I'd like to upload, but it produces a package called: R-2.9.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz Which includes the projects UPPER CASE NAME. As a supporting note, the source filename is: R-2.9.2.tar.gz This package built and installed nicely here with that name, and seems to be running just fine. So WHY DOES THE UPLOADED PACKAGE NEED TO BE LOWER CASE? I'm not YELLING, really, I JUST HAVE A VERY LOUD VOICE 8-) So, what does the OFFICIAL AUR COMMUNITY think about the name of this package? How do we accommodate case aversion and still spread the power and fun of R to the arch linux world? One last point to note. When searching for, or listing packages, with say: pacman -Q | grep R The upper case REALLY helps overcome listing a bunch of other packages due to the extreme popularity of the lower case 'r'. Any suggestions as to a package name acceptable by the community at LARGE (sorry, I just couldn't hold that one back 8-) would be greatly appreciated. I went through parts of AUR today intending to find some packages which could be deleted for various reasons. Here is what I got: audacious-beta <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26394>, audacious-plugins-beta <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26395>: Its an old, unmaintained version of Audacious. The version in the repos is 2 minor versions ahead of this one. I think it can safely be removed without hurting anything. bang <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15238>: This hasn't been maintained upstream for a while, and doesn't even build anymore. There is always Ecomorph, which is somewhat more maintained upstream. beryl-bmenu, beryl-desktopclick, beryl-screensaver: Beryl isn't available for Arch anymore, and hasn't been developed for over 2 years now. These can be removed. cairo-newspr <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16587>: Gentoo isn't even using the patches anymore, and the maintainer abandoned it. I see no reason for this package to stick around. catalyst-vanilla <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24451>: Old, unmaintained, a duplicate of the catalyst pkgbuild, and the old maintainer even asked for it to be deleted in the comments. Those should be reason enough to delete this PKGBUILD. ejourn <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=2772>: Project page is down, with the program innacessable. Package hasn't been updated in 3 years. It should be deleted. enna-cvs <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14653>: e17 switched to svn long ago. This should be deleted. php4-gtk <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=730>: This is for php version 4, which isn't available in arch. Hasn't been updated in years. qtpoveditor <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=2719>: Doesn't work anymore, and isn't supported either. rstatd <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=2557>: Doesn't work anymore, program itself last updated in 2005. Hi, python-fuse needs to be rebuilt against the latest fuse package due to linking errors (no PKGBUILD changes necessary). I would do this myself but I'm trying to track down an error in my toolchain that's preventing my packages from getting synced (I may have just fixed it but I'm waiting for the mirrors to see). Hello TUs, I finally managed to enter dev.archlinux.org to adopt some packages in [community]. I had to install opera to do so. I tried firefox, conkeror and midori, but all of them did not give me a login form but a message about an untrusted site. So my question is: Are there any settings I have to apply (using about:config or the like)? I would like to get rid of opera if I can. Hints? Regards Stefan

[aur-general] Adding a .deb packaged application to the AUR

Hello Listmates, I have a package here i'd really like to add to the AUR. The problem is that its packaged in a .deb. How would i go about packaging this for Arch? Feel free to just point at: "Look at this other package" or "Read this wiki page". In case some of you guys don't know the formmat that a .deb is in: An ar archive, inside there are 2 tarballs, one called control.tar.gz which for our purposes can be mostly ignored and one called data.tar.gz which has the actual application files laid out in the directory structure of the system similar to a Arch final binary package. (usr/bin/stuff, usr/share/stuff and so on). Or would it be easier for me to just setup a GitHub or BitBucket account, drop all the source files on there and simply make a hg or git package? (For the record and all, it's not my project, but it is GPLv2 so....)

Hey all Would it be OK (as in KISS) to shove in a custom kernel's equivalent firmware into /lib/firmware/$(uname -r)? By looking at the /lib/udev/firmware.sh script it's one of the default look-up paths. But if I (and subsequent third-party packagers) start doing this, it will break the consistency as kernel26's firmware are in that dir. The only resolution here is that kernel26 uses /lib/firmware/$(uname -r) as well. I'm pretty sure that the blobs are hardware-dependent and not software, but from looking at the kernel26 buildscripts so far it appears they are being bumped for every minor revision update. Why is this being done? If there is indeed no problem whatsoever and any kernel can use firmware of any version, then this case can be dismissed :) Regards

I have successfully compiled/installed and run the chromium-continuous from AUR repository on my pentium-m based laptop. However, when doing a similar install on my desktop which has Athlon 2800+ CPU the build is fine, but I get an error on running it, the error is: Code: $ chromium-browser [7215:7215:9111919603:ERROR:/b/slave/chromium-rel-linux/build/src/chrome/browser/google_update_settings_posix.cc(73)] Not implemented reached in static bool GoogleUpdateSettings::GetLanguage(std::wstring*) /usr/bin/chromium-browser: line 4: 7215 Illegal instruction ./chrome --enable-plugins "$@" I have even tried installing the package built on the laptop (i.e the one that works) and running on the desktop, but still the same error. Hello, following the weird titled "AUR webpage" thread ( http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/aur-general/2009-July/thread.html#5602 ) I think the way maintainers handle their packages could have some things simplified. I agree that simple updates to PKGBUILDs should be easier. I've seen many packages with typos in PKGBUILDs, showing that the extra workload of having to archive the files and upload them doesn't necessary make users test things before uploading. That's all up to the maintainer's will to do things right. I think having a simple syntax highlighted code editor to quick edit the PKGBUILD or at least a way to simply update the PKGBUILD without having to archive and upload everything every time would be a great help. Hey guys, I went to submit my first package, tigervnc-1.0.0-1 and that went well. Then I realized that I forgot to add my name to the top of the PKGBUILD file... Yea I know... So I tried to update the package and couldn't get that to work. (Later finding out that it was because I had the tar.gz file included in my upload and I guess my connection was timing out on a 2.7MB file. Anywho, so I abandoned it thinking if the uploader abandoned it it would delete it, which is not the case. Now when I tried to upload my updated package, it said I no longer have permission to update this package because it is an orphan. My aur name is nmcbride, could someone give me a hand getting the package back so I can upload my update? :D Thanks, Nate

I know there was a long discussion about this with some phraknagging eventually leading to a source "repository" for core and maybe extra. Although it would most likely never happen it is possible for someone to show up after nearly 3 years and request a previous package's source code. I suppose that previously the devs could argue that [community] was "not official" and relegate all obligations to the packagers (although only tentatively). Now that [community] is integrated more tightly with [core] and [extra] it seems that this is something at least worth a discussion. How are sources for [core] and [extra] handled? How is the user actually informed of their availability? Are those source archives mirrored or only hosted on the main server? Is this all irrelevant due to some misunderstanding of the GPL's clauses? How much storage space would it take to hose source files for all current packages that require them (e.g. GPL'd binary apps)? Xyne

I made an app yesterday with a very stupid name. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29526 It now has a better name (pacmatic). It is not even a day old at this point, so deleting it won't break much. To prevent this from happening again, my future release schedule will require I get a solid eight hours of sleep between pulling an all nighter to write it and uploading it to the AUR. Thanks! -Kyle

[aur-general] license convention for public domain packages

There are widely varying methods for specifying the license of a public domain package in Arch Linux. We should standardise and use one of them. Some packages use - 'Public Domain' (unclutter, python-webpy) - 'PD' (ttf-mph-2b-damase) - I think some packages might also be using 'none'. I saw one package using 'custom:public' (shuffle) Also, there is the question of whether we should have public domain declarations for each package in /usr/share/licenses or put a public domain declaration in /usr/share/licenses/common and refer to that. -- Abhishek

Hello to everyone ;) I'm "Flamelab" from AUR. Can a TU, please, rename my package from "stasks-manager-plasmoid" to "smooth-tasks-plasmoid" ? That happens because it has been renamed upstream and because, after installation, it is referred as "Smooth Tasks" in "Plasmoids" in KDE, instead of "Stasks" I think that if I try to rename it, a new package entry will be generated in AUR (and my package will not be renamed), so I think a TU can do it. This package is completely broken, and my own package ' dolphin-emu-svn-bin <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=27400>' provides the same. -- The package 'fluxbox-git <http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15047>' is orphaned. I have tried contacting the maintainer using several different email addresses, and have failed (waited for several weeks). If he/she shows up again, I'd be glad to hand it back over if he/she wants. I have a completely fixed and revamped PKGBUILD ready. Hi all! This afternoon I'll be leaving for HAR (Hacking at Random) in Vierhouten, in the Netherlands! I'll be connected about 24/7 until Monday, but since there will be a lot of nice hackers around I won't probably be checking my Gmail (unless I find some time to setup IMAPS, I don't trust the web interface cookies =P) and won't generally connect to unencrypted services. There's a chance that I'll have a VPN set up from a friend of mine, but it's better to consider me inactive. I'll also have another week off after this, with little to no connection, and I'll be back on August, 26th, hopefully ready to do a better work on Arch than I did in these last few months =) Corrado
