Archers, For those that haven't used the quicklaunch widget, you need to take a look. The benefit of quicklaunch is that you can put 20-30 apps at your immediate fingertips in the space of 5-6 icons on the plasma panel (one-click access to all your favorite apps) Example: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/dt/kde4/quicklaunch/quicklaunch.jpg In order to add it to your plasma (kicker) panel, rt-click the panel and choose 'Panel Options' -> 'Add Widgets', scroll down and choose 'Quicklaunch'. It will appear at the far right end of your panel instead of where your mouse was due to a design flaw in the panel. To move it where you want it, go throught the same process, rt-click the panel choose 'Panel Options' -> 'Panel Settings' then you can move things around. (be careful not to click outide of the panel or you will have to navigate back to 'Panel Options' once again. As a matter of preference, I put the quicklaunch right next to the start menu with the pager on its right: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/dt/kde4/quicklaunch/quicklaunch- location.jpg of course you can put it anywhere, but when I think "launch application" I'm already programmed to go to the bottom left corner of the screen. I put systray, device notifier, clock and cashew at the other end of the panel. Just a personal preference: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/dt/kde4/quicklaunch/right-end-of-panel.… You can get rid of any other application icons you have on the panel, because they will now all go in quicklaunch. Also delete the show desktop icon -- you don't need it. If you set your pager settings correctly, then clicking on the current desktop in pager will "show desktop". (rt-click pager, pager options). To setup quicklaunch, right click it and choose Quicklaunch Settings. Set the visible icons to a sufficient number (I use 24). It won't expand until you put the icons in it. To add your applications to it, just right-click on the quicklauch above the icon where you would like the new icon to reside. (the new addition will push the current icon down (or to the right if it is in the bottom row) when you add it. After you choose add icon, you are presented with a small file open dialog (click on the floppy disk button). Navigate to /usr/share/applications or /usr/share/applications/kde4 to find the desktop file to add. (kde3 apps are in /opt/kde3/share/applications) Just repeat the process until you have the icons you want. It's not quite as good as putting a subtree from your menu in an icon on the panel (like kde3), but it is a good substitute until Will Stephenson's fix filters down from kde4 upstream. Try this quicklaunch approach, and I think you will find the convenience of the desktop improves quite a bit. Good luck ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Guys, Still chasing the keepassx problem. There are no debugging symbols in the package so I used ABS to build from source, but of course there is no debugging there either. [arch-general] Permission problems - http is 0775, (root:http), I am in http -- still can't write??

Guys, I have run into a permission problem I can't understand. I need write access to the webserver on my laptop (that's where the developement happens). I have always just made myself a member of the webserver group and give the group write access to the document root (some applications require it). Today, setting up the webserver, I did the same thing only to be met with a permission denied message when I attempted a copy -- Huh? I can't understand why the touch failed (I could just be confused at the moment as well). I am a member of the http group (added with gpasswd -a david http, not just edited like usual), the http group has write permission to the http directory. Just a note; keepassx, which has worked reliably for years, began crashing today. I don't know whether it is keepassx, or qt (suspicion is qt). The errors are: 18:31 alchemy:~> keepassx Found Metastream: KPX_CUSTOM_ICONS_4 Found Metastream: KPX_GROUP_TREE_STATE Segmentation fault It is happening on suse as well. (both with qt-4.5.3) I even downgraded to keepassx 0.3.3-2.1 and it still occurss, so that pretty much rules out keepassx as the problem. There is some chatter on the ubuntu lists as well. If any of you super-brains use it, you might want to check and see what is going on. I suck at tracking down these type of issues, (strace is Greek) but I'll keep trying. -- David C. [arch-general] Entranced - Anybody Using It? I get it started, can enter name, but that's it.

Guys I was trying to setup entranced on Arch. I followed the enlightenment.org wiki, but the arch setup for Xsession, etc. left me a little unsure on exactly where some of the entrance_edit path info should point. The Arch default for entrance_config.cfg is: Entrance Daemon Settings attempts = 5 xserver = "/usr/bin/X -quiet -br -nolisten tcp vt7" Entrance Client Settings xsession = "/etc/X11/Xsession" auth = 1 engine = 0 reboot = 1 halt = 1 theme = "default.edj" background = "" pointer = "/usr/share/entrance/images/pointer.png" greeting-before = "Welcome to" greeting-after = "" date-format = "%A %B %e, %Y" time-format = "%l:%M:%S %p" autologin-mode = 0 autologin-user = "" presel-mode = 1 presel-prevuser = "" user-remember = 1 user-remember-count = 5 user-count = 0 session-count = 2 default-session = "default" default-session-title = "Default" default-session-icon = "default.png" The 'xsession' line can't be right because Arch doesn't have "/etc/X11/Xsession". So I'm thinking that is the problem. The box is booting to runlevel 3 and all xdm/kdm startup in /etc/inittab are commented out. (the wiki said to disable all xdm and kdm) I have the daemons in rc.conf set to: .. alsa entranced famd) and entrance starts and display the default winter theme. All my desktops were listed (e16, e17, icewm, kde, lxde, openbox). The username entry works and I can type my name in there, but the password line is grayed out and will accept no input. The little 'lock' icon and the '>' (right-arrow) below the password line are grayed out as well. When things wouldn't work, I just used ctrl+alt+f1 and /etc/rc.d/entranced stop to kill it and then just used kdm. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I think what you are referring to was a problem with non-standard umask, which has been fixed in pacman : http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12263 If you used pacman as root with non-standard umask, you would have had exactly the same problem.

I just updated to hal 0.5.13-3 and after rebooting the soundcard is not accessible to non-root users anymore, so there is no sound. Any idea how to solve this? Thanks

I am using a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. When I run 'alsamixer' it first list that my Logitech webcam is default. I change it to "Fast Track Ultra" which is number 1 in the list, and, then it says: "This sound device does not have any playback controls." Any help in figuring this out is much appreciated. [arch-general] new xorg & go-openoffice are fighting -> fatal user interface language cannot be determined

Guys, I thought I would try go-openoffice to see if there was a difference that I could tell from the way I use it. In short, installed go-oo and the dependencies. go-oo WILL start for root, but WILL NOT start for normal users. The error dialog received at the same time the splash appears says Fatal Error: "The application cannot be started. The user interface language cannot be determined." Launching it from the command line results in the following error: 15:26 alchemy:~> soffice [Java framework] Error in function createSettingsDocument (elements.cxx). javaldx failed! OK, that doesn't jive with the dialog reported error, but I'm sure they are related. I have googled it and the only thing I ran across was the suggestion to check /etc/locale.gen to determine if the correct language was uncommented. I believe it is: 15:32 alchemy:~> noc /etc/locale.gen en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 en_US ISO-8859-1 The strange part is the fact it starts for root, but not a regular user (that normally sounds like a permissions problem). I have just spent a happy hour PULLING MY HAIR OUT over misformatted troff documents on my printers ... which printed perfectly several months ago. The problem is that recent versions of ghostscript will (often) assume a4 paper size, regardless of /etc/paper. This applies after ghostscript 8.64-5 but I am not sure which version (8.70 has the problem). If you use ISO standard paper sizes you are probably okay. The solution is described here-- http://ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-devel/2009-September/008565.html and consists of passing an explicit "-P-pletter" when formatting your groff source; "groff -pletter ..." doesn't make it on my system. Neither did modifying "gs_init.ps" (?) Other postscript generating programs may do this explicitly (evince does). surf/zathura users may wish to take note. Guys, Just a note. When you install kde4, the kleopatra certificate is installed without the needed dependency 'dirmngr'. When you first run kleopatra, you will get the error. [arch-general] Trouble with RaLink RT2561/RT61

Hello, >From time to time, my network shows some poor performance. My 64 bit Arch Linux box is connected with a wireless connections with a RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI, the system is up-to-date. The symptoms are: * Looking up a website takes very long, or it will never load at all. Only in Chromium snapshot, Firefox loads the same page instantly at the same time. However, some videos on Youtube load for 25% and refuse to continue to fetch more (in both browsers). * Kopete is unable to keep a connection with either MSN or my Jabber accounts. They simply time out. * SSH connections drop dead (or are interrupted for minutes). No high traffic involved at all. The problem does not always occur, at some days I have a good connection, but sometimes the symptoms above occur. I suspected it had something to do with IPv6, but disabling it did not have any effect. I don't think it's interference either, the connection to the router is quite healthy: normal response time, 0% packet loss (also with servers outside my network), download rates are often at their max. I also have a laptop with 32 bit Arch Linux installed, using the Atheros wireless drivers. It also runs Chromium and doesn't show any problems whatsoever, on the same network. When I run tcpdump on both machines, I see many lines like 12:09:37.134509 00:30:3f:50:19:e5 (oui Unknown) > 00:18:f8:45:10:c3 (oui Unknown), ethertype Unknown (0x05ec), length 1530 where 00:30:3f:50:19:e5 is the wireless router (unsure about the other MAC, I'm on a shared network). My laptop shows seems to capture much more of these messages than my PC does, not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Could it be a driver issue? Hi all, I'm thinking of different ways to organize my files and xattrs seem a nice, standardized way to do so (don't ask me exactly what I'm trying to do, for I only have a slight idea). The problem is: I can't use them at all. I'm using the default kernel, which, according to /proc/config.gz has: CONFIG_EXT4_FS_XATTR=y and I'm using ext4, evidently. I've tried doing the following: $ echo 'asd' > test $ attr -s user.author -V andre test attr_set: Operation not supported Could not set "user.author" for test but, as you can see, it doesn't work. Running it as root doesn't work, too. I've also made a small C program, but it also fails to set the xattr, returning ENOTSUP (operation not supported), so it isn't a problem with 'attr'. I do have 'attr' from [core] installed so I don't know what else can be the problem. Thanks in advance, Andre

[arch-general] kde3 sources available anymore & missing garbage collector

Guys, I don't know if the kde3 sources still live on a server some where, but I would be interested in finding them. I still have all the PKGBUILD files for the kde3 install, but I need a few sources. kpdf for starters, and there are a couple more. Also, I successfully built quanta from AUR -- works fine, but I was unable to build pdftk due to missing dependencies: gcc-gcj package not found, searching for group... error: 'gcc-gcj': not found in sync db ==> ERROR: Pacman failed to install missing dependencies. I think that is some type of garbage collector. Anybody know where I can find it? I have a couple of scripts that use pdftk so it is somewhat of a pressing matter. Other than the sound I'm still working on (haven't had time to mess with it), the install is done. (Arch+e16+e17+openbox+kde4+full LAMP+GNU development pkgs+full Office setup). This was my sixth arch install since April. In the same time period I have done "one" suse install (for my youngest daughter). Arch is such a damn good distro it is a grand testament to some very smart thinking about how best to put together and -- more importantly --> maintain a Linux distribution. The folks on the suse list just can't explain why, with the abundant resources of Novell in their pocket, little 'ole Arch is always 1-2 major versions of just about everything ahead of them. (gotta love it!) I -- can tell you why. Arch nailed it with the rolling release approach. That is the right way to do a distro. Even if on occasion packages need to say in testing for 30-90 days to accomodate a major kernel change/whatever, it still beats the hell out of trying to maintain 3 separate versions of a an opensource distribution, built for 3 different kernels, and the complete set of some 4000 packages per distro version that need to be maintained. The resources required to try and do that are staggering. (I needle them that going to a rolling release would tripple their net revenues overnight just due to cost savings alone ;-) I'll try and cobble together my install notes after I'm done and update the wiki in any of the areas I faced challenges. This thread will probably erupt in a massive flamewar, yet I decided to post my story anyway. I am talking about the desktop experience in general, not the technical details behind it. Keep that in mind. I've been working these past few months with KDE 4.3 and it feels very sluggish and incomplete. I can't enable the desktop effects because that makes things even slower. I'm doing this on a fairly decent setup, an AMD Sempron 2 Ghz with an nVidia FX5500. My laptop suffers from this sluggishness as well. On top of that, lots of things annoy me in KDE 4.3, see the end of this post for my top annoyances. Yesterday I had to reboot to my Windows XP installation on this computer and I was shocked when I arrived in XP's userland. Everything was ridiculously fast. When returning to my linux desktop everything felt even more sluggish. That's when I decided to go back to KDE 3.5. I restored my old KDE 3.5 profile, installed the necessary packages and logged back in. WOOOOOF, everything is fast again. Opening new windows is instantaneous, hell even bringing up context menus is faster. If Linux is that much better, why does the current Linux desktop (KDE 4.3) still suck compared to an operating system that's 8 years old? Last week I also had the chance to check out Windows 7, and I was stumped. I was genuinly impressed by Windows 7's GUI. It feels fast, works fluently, it has nice effects which just work and work FAST. When browsing around it felt like a very solid desktop environment. I am jealous. I really am. The thought of using Windows 7 in favor of KDE 4.3 has occured to me much more than I like. And it's little things like dragging the windows to the top of the screen makes them maximized, dragging them to the left makes the take exactly 50% of the screen. How many times have you been manually resizing windows to fit next to each other? I have, too many times. These are things that really improve your productivity. So when should we have started working at a better desktop environment for Linux? When Mac OS X came out. When was that again? 2001. Yes, it really was that long ago. It already had awesome desktop effects that just work on (compared to these days) VERY modest hardware. And it worked fast as well. It was and still is a solid desktop environment. From that point on the Linux community should have recognized the threat Mac OS X was for the desktop environment. Unfortunately nobody did and we went on creating a big mess, fighting over implementations and technical details instead of attempting to create a solid desktop environment. Yet we did have a second chance in 2007. Microsoft obviously screwed up with Windows Vista, we had the chance to win back alot of terrain here until the release of Windows 7. So what did we come up with? KDE 4. Yes, a big dissapointment. We still don't have something that's comparable. So basically, where are we at? KDE 3.5 is Windows XP KDE 4.3 is Windows Vista ??? is Windows 7 When are we getting to the Windows 7 stage? Microsoft didn't do a big advertising campaign for the launch of Windows 7, nevertheless they delivered a big slap in the face to the Linux desktop environments. The numbers speak for themselves, Windows 7 has already sold more copies in its first week than Windows Vista did in its first month. And with good riddance, Windows 7 really is better than Windows Vista. Microsoft recognized the problems with Windows Vista and dealt with them. And dealt with them swiftly if you ask me, doing it in less then 3 years. Conclusion We are losing ground. We are losing it fast. Our competitors recognize what the user wants and delivered. If we are comparing enterprise desktops, there's no going around Red Hat. The current Red Hat desktop (5.4) ships with KDE 3.5, while its succesor RHEL 6 will be, if looking what Fedora brings now, shipped with KDE 4.2 or 4.3. That means KDE 4.2/4.3 will be the main desktop for enterprises for at least the next 3 years. A disgrace if you ask me. Users will be comparing desktop environments and they will find Windows 7 or Mac OS X to be better. After the damage RHEL 6 will have done to the reputation of the Linux desktop, it will take again as many years to rectify the damage done. Granted if we will have a solid desktop environment comparable to Windows 7 by the time RHEL 7 gets released. Which I can't help but doubt. My top KDE 4.3 annoyances: * Slooooowwww. Logging in takes a multifold of times it did under KDE 3.5, repainting windows takes up a lot of time * The battery status applet is buggy, it only shows the actual percentage after you've hovered it with the mouse, even when you've set it to always display. The scale it uses is also difficult to interpret. These bugs have been reported a long time ago and are still not fixed. * The run dialog is useless. The reason is the history function. It can't display a full history when you start typing, you have to type alot more. Having a pull down menu and using the arrow keys to select the entry you want is alot faster. Even Microsoft knows they shouldn't touch that dialog, it still works like a charm in windows 7. * Double clicking the system icon in the titlebar doesn't always work to close an application (the system icon is the left-most icon in the titlebar). This bug has also been reported a long time ago and still not fixed. * I get a full 10 minutes of extra runtime on my laptop when I switched back to 3.5 * Power management is buggy in KDE 4.3 and sometimes powerdevil just loses its settings * Some settings KDE 3.5 used to have aren't there anymore in KDE 4.3. * Where's my "home" icon!!!??? :-(

Ciao! I want to share my (not so positive) experience about installing Arch Linux on a Hannsnote netbook, which I have been unexpectedly given as a gift recently:) I used the USB image, "burned" on a usb stick (usb-urned:)). The install went fine except when it tried to install GRUB. The installer hanged (don't know if it really hanged or if it just wanted to use all the CPU for some time), but I went about it by manually installing GRUB, so this is not really a problem. The Intel 945GME is recognized, but all I get from X is a blank screen, if using the intel driver or leaving the duty to a config-less X, or doing some other tricks from the wiki and the forum. No errors whatsoeverm though, just a black dead screen. The vesa driver worked fine, but stuck at 800x600. Finally, I couldn't work out a way to use the wireless card, a Ralink 2860 or something. I mean, not even the interface was shown, even if modules were - at least to me - correctly loaded. Having tried Puppy Linux before with success, I knew that things should have worked. Now, I installed Kubuntu Netbook edition and everything works out of the box. Unfortunately it won't last long on my laptop, its interface is scarying:) I'd really like to archify my netbook. It came with XP preinstalled, but I cannot use it without a Linux operating system, for practical and also psychological reasons (no, not ideological:) ). It has a couple of partitions, one with XFS which I use as storage. It generally works fine, but sometimes something happens and it cease to work. Listmates, New drive for my laptop so I dedicated it to Arch. Net install with 2009.08 went fine (although there really should be a warning when you leave install WITHOUT configuring the bootloader). [the /arch/setup menu autoadvances when you leave Configure System and if you click Done and downarrow anticipating moving to the next item, you can easily miss configuring the bootloader (I did ;-)] The problem I have is that my laptop is stuck in 1152x864 resolution. For the text install that is fantastic, but when you start kde -- not so good. (should be 1440x900) The card is an RS690M (radeon 1200) and the radeon driver was loaded by default. The modules configured are: 22:46 alchemy:~> lsmod | grep rad radeon 716352 1 ttm 43776 1 radeon drm 191392 2 radeon,ttm i2c_algo_bit 6980 1 radeon i2c_core 25664 4 radeon,i2c_piix4,drm,i2c_algo_bit THE WEIRD PART... I have Arch on the drive I just took out and it goes to 1440x900 just fine. I am not using an xorg.conf, so I am pretty much at X's mercy. I use /etc/rc.d/kdm start from runlevel 3 to start kdm. It goes to 1152x864 instead of 1440x900. I don't understand how to control the new KMS stuff. Hi, I've had some nice experiences with Windows(XP)'s suspend functionality, and it seems to work on all machines I've worked with. and the other day I just had a successful resume on my machine with "s2ram -f -m -p", but it takes like a minute for it to fully recover to a terminal (tty/1). (ps: my computer is a desktop with AMD RS780 chipset, which isn't supported by KMS yet) Unlike Windows ones, which only take like 3-5 seconds to wake up, linux takes much longer, I don't know if this is common... My question is: What's the average resume time of yours, and is it possible to be any faster ?

Guys, I did a fresh install of 2009.08 on a new drive for my laptop. For the past 8 months, I have never gotten the freedesktop.org -- removable policy to work. (well, maybe for a week or so before the kernel change in July). I wanted to make sure I got it right this time so I haven't monkeyed with the policies yet. In kde4, all of my removable devices are properly recognized (usb sticks, 2.5" laptop drives connected via usb, etc.). Despite being recognized properly, (1) the user cannot access the drives - until root has accessed them (like opening konqueror su) (2) none of the drives are mounted for the user under /media - until root has accessed them What makes no sense to me is that after root has accessed the drives, the user can use them (I guess the actual "mount" occurs when root access the drives, even though kde4 shows them as connected for the user through the notifier popup in the task bar) I finally just wrote a script to mount removables under /mnt that can be called by the users (basically uses sudo to mount and case on partition name and size to mount the drives on the proper mount points) Something has got to give. I've wiki'ed myself into a coma and still -- no joy. If one of the arch mount-removable gurus would just slip me the secret, I would be much abliged :-) It has to be simple, but simplicity has escaped me for quite some time now. However, I am determined to get it right with the new install. I know the wiki well, but where is the other document that I can use along with the wiki to make sure I have a good working system? [arch-general] APM gets re-enabled after awake from suspend

Hi, my hard drive suffers from the "clicking" problem, therefore I deactivated the APM (Advanced Power Management) totally. I'm doing this using hdparm in the /etc/rc.local, making sure that it gets executed every time I boot up my machine. However I noticed that the APM gets re-enabled after I wake my machine up from Suspend-to-RAM, which makes the hard drive clicking again. I'm now wondering whether this is "normal"? I guess so, as the hard drive gets disabled during the suspend, and after a wake-up it gets re-enabled, so any changed made with hdparm don't get stored. Is this intention right? Secondly I want to know what would be the right file (place) to fix this. Hello fello archers.. I've recently been going through a bit of a rough patch with my laptop usage.. I had a 15" macbook pro (dual booted with arch linux), which I recently sold because I thought it was ugly, the mouse didn't work very well, and frankly I was trying to de-appletize myself :).. I just received my refurbished dell studio 14z and got arch up and running on it, but I can't decide if I like it or not.. I haven't gotten used to the mouse yet. The resolution is less than desirable. (13 something x 7 something). And there isn't a latch on the lid.. but I do like the size, aesthetics, weight, and the keyboard feels nice.. So I'm asking you, if you have a laptop, what kind is it? Does arch run pretty well on it (synaptics, sleep/wake, etc.)? What window manager do you think works best with the touchpad (I'm using gnome now)? Any input would be appreciated. ------------------------------ -Eric Jacobs

After working with the ati driver instead of the radeonhd driver, I must say I am very impressed with the KMS implementation. It works much, much better than in the past (performance is still way short of fglrx, and it is still much HOTTER than fglrx , but screen artifacts are virtually eliminated, desktop effects are good, and compiz works very well with the driver. I'm not suggesting you go spend the money on one, but if you did, you'd be very happy with it. Once I figured out how to get past the EFI boot system, the only thing I've had issues with at all is getting lirc to work correctly, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Tried everything! But, wireless works excellent - broadcom and all. The synaptics simply needed a little tweaking using the instructions gleaned from the ubuntu forum. Sleep and wake worked out of the box. Every window manager I've tried worked great with the touchpad. I used kde 4 for a while, but have settled finally on xfce because it reminds me more of my first linux machine (fvwm on an old pb 486). In fact, I have a good bit of content ready for the next release, whenever that becomes possible. I would like to see the magazine/newsletter make a comeback to where we were when we left off and then some. I want to see more community contributions, writers, I'd like to get the Schwag report back (Dusty, that's you if you're still up to it), etc. This is a big project that has greatly benefited our community and I hate to see it in it's current state. Please let me know what you all think so that we can expedite the release of another issue! @Kensai: Let me know what your current situation is (I know how being a newlywed is, been there a few times now...), and either way, best of luck (hopefully your luck is better than my first attempt was).

Hi, I'm wondering whether there is a possibility to encrypt a remote system using Arch Linux? I have installed Arch on a remote server, and don't like the idea that anyone with physical access to my system has access to my data. So is there something I can do about it? Using dm-crypt (with luks) doesn't work at all, as I can't input the passphrase when I reboot my system, the technician would really hate me if I ask them to attach a remote console each time I reboot my system. Hey, I made a screwup on the openntpd package which nastily reveals a weakness in openssh and filesystems. I moved away from using /var/empty/ as a privsep directory, and removed the directory from the package. But since it's empty, it got removed from the system as well in the upgrade. So if you're using openntpd and openssh, BE EXTRA CAREFUL with your next upgrade. openssh does not start if /var/empty/ is not there. Quick fix: after doing pacman -Suy, do mkdir /var/empty as root. Longer fix: openssh, or perhaps the filesystems package should create /var/empty/ and put a hidden file in it so idiots like me won't cause accidents in the future. --vk

Hi, I have two hard disks installed in my computer. One for Windows and the other for Arch Linux. I have tried to install Arch several times but get a message write after I click "Arch Linux" from the boot menu- it has something to do with "Error 17". I have come to see that my Grub configuration file is not configured properly. The problem is I do not know how to configure it properly- so that I can use Windows and Arch. The way I would like to go about choosing which OS I would like to use is by selecting it from the Grub boot menu. Although, if I have to choose a disk to boot from in the BIOS, than that is not a problem either. I have read on the Arch Wiki and the Grub Wiki, yet, do not know exactly how to properly configure the Grub configuration file to handle both OS's. Thanks for any help. Preston

Hi listmates, i have a problem with mutt and gnupg. I have set the gpg-options described here: http://WIKI.mutt.org/?MuttGuide/UseGPG I use mutt with getmail/procmail and msmtp to receive/send mail. I have two mail-accounts (gmx.de and my university account). If i send me a signed mail from GMX to GMX mutt tells me "Good signature" and the status line tells "signature successfully verified". Sending mail from university-account to university-account everything works fine, too. The problem exists if i send from GMX to university. Now mutt tells me "BAD signature from" and "PGP signature could not be verified". Sending mail from university to GMX and mutt and gpg work well. The key is always the same and the key is made for both e-mail adresses. If i open both mails in the sent folder mutt tells me for both mails that the signature is successfully verified. Hi, after setting up a full system encryption, which works just fine basically, I know want to create a ram disk. I though that /tmp could be outsourced to a ram disk, to speed things up. However I'm wondering whether it really makes sense to encrypt this. If there is someone able to read my ram, there is nothing I can do about it, so encryption wouldn't work, would it? Furthermore the content of the RAM gets encrypted when suspending, as my swap partition is encrypted. Moreover I think that it would slow down the ram disk, and that the benefit wouldn't be that great at all. So what do you think, is there any rational reason to encrypt a ram disk, or is it fair enough, when I just create an unencrypted one for /tmp? Hello all, I'm a new user of ArchLinux, so far installed on two machines (more wil follow). Coming from first Suse and then Fedora it was a big change, but I learned a lot in the process and have the nice feeling to be back in control of my machines (they also lost some weight). The one remaining problem is with netcfg 2.2.1. On my laptop I have the drivers e1000 and ipw2200 loaded in rc.conf, providing the devices eth0 and eth1 in fixed order. For the first I use: CONNECTION="ethernet-iproute" DESCRIPTION="Local ethernet - zita1 router" INTERFACE="eth0" IP="static" ADDR="192.168.2.241" GATEWAY="192.168.2.240" and this works nicely. The only strange thing is that it fails when the interface is not connected. I've never seen this on the systems I used before, and since you can disconnect the network cable and put it back without any ill effect on the interface configuration I'd really expect it to be configured as well if the physical connection is not present. For the wireless connection all the examples use dhcp but I need a fixed address. Combining the examples I arrived at: CONNECTION="wireless" DESCRIPTION="Wireless connection at Basilicanova" INTERFACE="eth1" SECURITY="wep" ESSID="lovettanet" KEY="........" IP="static" ADDR=192.168.1.241 GATEWAY="192.168.1.1" which fails with: lovetta up SIOCADDRT: No such process Adding gateway failed. After some experimentation I found that the following works: CONNECTION="wireless" DESCRIPTION="Wireless connection at Basilicanova" INTERFACE="eth1" SECURITY="wep" ESSID="lovettanet" KEY="........" OK, ok, I want install qemu+kqemu and KVM in my machine. Why does they conflict? Sometime, I want my virtual machine run faster, so KVM is a great choice. But sometime, I need simulate other CPU: ppc arm ... , so qemu is the best choice. Why does them conflict? Can the community do some works to let them co-exist in the SAME archlinux installation?

I had problems with launching win xp it was crashing often since it didn't like my sata hard(sdb) drive or that it wasn't on boot disk most likely and since my root started to run out of space I decided to make some changes. move sda1(root) to sda2 while increasing sda2 size and install windows on sda1. sda is ata hard drive I increased sda2(it was used to test other linux distro) size up to 10gb from ~5.5GB with gparted Then did "dd if="/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda2" from live usb install. Now when I do "sudo blkid" it shows that both sda1 and sda2 have same UIID. Any ideas how could I fix this?

Hi folks, Sorry for the halloweenish subject heading ;) I recently got this bug report: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16690 It turned out it was not a bug with the perl package at all, but a problem which occurs when the presumably very old and no longer existing package "termcap-compat" is installed on a system. It was originally installed as a dependency for some other, unidentified package. And it turned out to my surprise that even I still had that package installed! That prompts me to ask the following: Are there other such obsolete packages that typically should no longer be installed on a "clean" Arch Linux system? I am not in favour of automating their removal, of course, but it would be useful to collect a list of such things that we could put in the wiki and/or our monthly newsletter. Another example that comes to mind is the obsolete file /etc/udev/udev.rules that I also still had until recently, and which I have removed after Thomas' suggestion. Please submit your suggestions for the forthcoming "Arch Ghostbusting Day" (aka "The Great Halloween Cleanup")! :) François

Still no luck with Pm-utils. It takes about a minute before the keyboard lights and mouse leds to go on, and Caps-Lock key works, so it isn't hanging. I could use the SysRq method to reboot my system, so I guess maybe everything is actually working -- except video. Using Ctrl-Alt-[1-7] to switch between ttys doesn't work, because my monitor doesn't even receive any signal.

I had problem with Exaile when I try to play radio station. Exaile needs gstreamer's http support, and gstreamer needs libsoup-gnome for that. I didn't had libsoup-gnome installed, only libsoup, and trying to play radio in Exaile caused system to hang. Is that a missing dependency somewhere maybe? Greets, -- Nebojša Stričević

Hi, I'm new to this mailing list (and to mailing lists itself), so please forgive me any mistakes I'm doing ;). I hope that I use the right list, at least it seems to be the most adequate one ... However I'm participating in some BOINC projects. Although there is a 'boinc' package in the community repository (which was updated just yesterday). First of all I want to ask you why you have updated this package to a unstable version? According to this (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php) page the latest stable version is 6.6.38, but the version in the repository is 6.10.13, which is a development version. Shouldn't there be just stable versions in the repository? Furthermore I think that the package itself should be splitted. I have a root server, which has not X server installed, but want to use boinc there, too. Therefore I think there should be at least two packages 'boinc-client' as well as 'boinc-manager'. The optimum would be even some more packages, something like 'boinc-dev' (all stuff in order to setup an own boinc project). Maybe you can take some inspiration from the debian structure of the boinc packages: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=boinc&searchon=names&suite=stabl… I know that it is possible to create this packages for my own (using abs), but I think it should be available for greater audience. What do you think about this? Would it be ok, to create these packages and submit them to the aur? As there is already a boinc package in the main repository, I don't quite know whether such redundancy is accepted at all? Maybe something can be done on Arch to work against this development? The closer to the core a package is the more careful we have to be with dependencies, I think. It's easy to replace a text editor, impossible to replace xorg, etc.. The other thing I can think of is talking to upstream. Maybe they're not that aware of this issue and think along the lines of: "Everyone has HAL installed anyway, it's no problem if we use it to do xyz." Philipp

Hello all, It appears I've got two similar packages on my computer: - polkit, which is needed by the following packages : :: consolekit: requiert polkit>=0.94 :: devicekit-disks: requiert polkit>=0.94 :: devicekit-power: requiert polkit>=0.94 :: gconf: requiert polkit>=0.94 :: polkit-gnome: requiert polkit>=0.94 :: system-tools-backends: requiert polkit>=0.94 -policykit, which is needed by the following packages : :: hal: requiert policykit>=0.9-6 :: polkit-qt: requiert policykit :: pulseaudio: requiert policykit As noted on the forum ( http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=644090#p644090) they do not reference the same policy rules. My guess is that policykit is due to be removed and replaced by polkit. But in the meanwhile the system-wide privileges are very difficult to manage ! Can someone tell me more about those packages ? For example pressing RALT will give return, the left arrow will be remapped to change group etc. Terminating and restarting X will remove the problem; everything works fine on terminals. The error is not reproducible but seems to be related to/caused by layout switching. And I'm switching very often. I'm using Openbox 3.4.7.2, Kxkb, Xorg 1.6.3.901-1. On my second box where I use wmii with keybound scripts for layout switching the error didn't show up yet. Hi First of all, I have [testing] enabled and I'm on 32bit. I wanted to take a look at these two alternatives of matlab. Both of them don't work here, both are complaining about a missing library error while loading shared libraries: libgfortran.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After installing gcc-fortran it worked, so it seems like we need a rebuild here with corrected dependencies for [testing] (octave) and [community-testing] (scilab) Greetz Army

Guys, New strange error while I troubleshoot the dead X intel card issue. As mentioned, I have managed to get twm and openbox running in vncserver on the box with the intel card. kde4 apps will run, but look terrible due to the difference in color-depth, etc., so I was trying to get kde3/kate or kwrite running. I have always been able to run the kde3 apps from both twm and openbox before, but now I get the following error: /opt/kde/bin/kwrite: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 same error with kate, and just about any other kde3 app. Any way to fix this? [arch-general] enlightenment e-svn (e17) segfaults with standard setup, OK with minimalist (battery module)

Devs, I don't know if I should bug this since it is a svn package, but enlightenment (the e-svn package) segfaults and cannot recover if you choose the standard setup. It goes through the initial setup screens OK, but as soon as it tries to start, it segfaults and cannot be recovered. I deleted the ~/.e directory and re-ran setup a few times changing setup options and finally got it to load fine choosing the minimalist setup. I then went through the modules to see if I could find the one causing the problem. Sure enough, as soon as I attempted to load the battery module - WHAM segfault-unrecoverable. I know nothing about enlightenment as I had never event loaded it before a few days ago when troubleshooting the intel X crash issue, and then just e16. Tonight was my first time to load e17, so I don't know how much help I'll be troubleshooting the problem. But, before I did anything, I wanted to ask whether I should bug it, or just send this email since it was listed as a svn package (e-svn). Let me know... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hello, sorry that I have to annoy you again but you were always very helpful. I have a second Arch Linux install with GDM as login manager and Xfce as desktop environment. This installation is up-to-date. Since the version 2.28 of GDM or better GNOME was released, I noticed some little problems. I read the site about the GNOME 2.28 changes on wiki.archlinux.org and I now know how to configure the new GDM. But sometimes the login process from GDM to Xfce hangs forever and if I can login, it will take a much longer time now. These problems did not exist in the past. Can you help? Greetings Lars

If I need to do something on a remote host that is something more than what I want to do over ssh (something that requires 4-5 windows or apps or configuring the actual remote desktop) I use vncserver/vncviewer. If I need a kde4 app and the remote host is opensuse, then there is no problem at all running the app. If the remote host is arch, then I am kind of screwed because there is some setting causing kde4 (which I understand uses native 24bit color) to look terrible. The vncserver setting on both suse and arch are identical. Greetings all, I am wondering if anyone would be interested in working with me to create a repository containing the most commonly used Drupal modules, themes, and installation profiles. I feel like a major lacking of Drupal is that it does not have a good way for managing its packages. Drush is a start, but being able to set up and maintain sites with something like pacman would be so much more powerful and useful. I also know there are some major hosting companies such as slicehost which support Arch servers/VPS which might be pleased to have good package manangement for a major CMS. The packages might also help to enforce good file structure practices etc.. Let me know what you think or if you know anyone who might be interested in working on the project (also, if I should be posting this somewhere else). -David Campbell

Guys, I'm having a problem with openoffice calc. When I highlight a few cells or few rows and then change the background color, no color is shown on the monitor for the cells. Moving the input box up/down across the rows or cells that the background color was set on, the color indication in the toolbar correctly changes showing where the color has been set, but still no background color is displayed in the cells on-screen. Oddly, when I print the spreadsheet, the background color is correctly printed?? Hi, I'm having a problem with disk encryption using luks. I have my /home disk (on a separate disk 'sdb') encrypted using luks. I have this in /etc/cryptsetup home /dev/sdb1 ASK and this in /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/home /home ext4 defaults,user_xattr 0 1 Suddenly today, it won't accept the passphrase on boot. I'm sure that I'm entering it correctly. It took me 32 tries the first time and many more the second reboot after kernel 2.6.31.3 update. The annoying thing is that archlinux only takes three tries then fails and I have to reboot to try again. Any idea please? I'm 100% sure I'm entering the passphrase correctly. I don't have another operating system installed or anything and I go back to work in a few days so looking for a new distribution or operating system is not a favorable option. Hallo all. here is my problem: last week when kernel was upgraded to 2.6.31, it broke conky and hwmon on some of the machines. So i opened FS#16584 and it was resolved in an update of conky . However it broke conky and hwmon on another set of machines as reported in this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82231 But as latest reported by Beini in FS#16650, the updated hwmon patch should work on both set of machines. Which is evident as me and another member with similar configuration have reported success in the ongoing thread. But the other side has yet to report anything. So i think that is blocking the update of conky. So in this situation, i am asking for your information and feedback about this issue, if you happen to be one of the affected users.

Any idea where to find libasound_module_pcm_jack.so or how to compile alsa to get it? It's probably of no use to the majority of arch users but it's a module that has to be enabled by hand in asoundrc anyway, so I think it wouldn't hurt to make it available for those that find it useful. Philipp

I'm trying to get GRUB installed on a pure GPT disk (I didn't know it was best to make a hybrid MBR/GPT), and it looks like a patch was added back in March 2008 for this (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9864) but it continues to fail. Listmates, After the latest kernel update, I cannot start X for the Arch box I have that has an onboard intel graphics card. Why? This box has always worked fine with the 915 module. Guys, I almost had a heartattack tonight when I updated my laptop and X died. I though "oh no, here we go again -- the intel story all over again..." After update I did a clean restart and the first thing I noticed was the screen resolution changed (twice) during the boot process: (1) First few lines ~ 640x480 regular text (2) Arch console splash displayed, looked like 1024x768 ::process a [result] ::process b [result] ::process c [result] (3) The something switched again and right justified the results: ::process d [result] ::process e [result] ::process f [result] Then when Runlevel 5 was reached and X started it hung and looked like it was frying my screen (started out blackscreened and then became progressively brighter until ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console). I killed kdm (initially using kdm3) with /etc/rc.d/kdm3 stop and confirmed all was dead with ps ax | grep kdm. Thinking it could have been a problem with kdm3 versus kdm, I tried to start kdm with /etc/rc.d/kdm start -- same result. X hung, same frying screen look ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console. Crap! Ok, then I decided to try starting X without an xorg.conf to see if the defaults would work. /etc/rc.d/kdm start -- same result. X hung, same frying screen look ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console. Alright, I killed everything off and tried the kde3 greeter with /etc/rc.d/kdm3 start -- Ha! It worked (I'm typing now) Whatever is going on with the modules moving into the kernel, etc. there are some very nasty unexpected consequences for users. I am glad I was able to get the kde3 greeter to start X, but I suspect that if I only had kde4 installed, I would be dead-in-the-water. Listmates, Here is an off-the-wall one for the BASH guys. Many times I need to get file or directory information from the command line with wildcards in the filename or path. I have always hated having to quote the filename or path to prevent shell expansion before it gets to my script. I was pecking around on a script for rsync that would take the same type of file and path information with wildcards and hit upon a really cool way to handle the input without having to quote the names with wildcards to prevent expansion. (.. at least I thought it was cool) Any way, I thought somebody else could get some use out of it. I've replaced the rsync calls with echo statments so your can test it if you have any use for it. Any script that deals with multiple files or filespecs is a candidate for its use. Take a look. The process is a 2-loop process with an Array of cli inputs as the outer loop and the inner loop tests whether the array element holds a directory or a filespec with globbing. If it is a filespec with wildcards, then the wildcards are processed with the inner loop using ls for the individual files. Works for one file or a thousand specified in as many chunks as you want to put on the command line: #!/bin/bash --norc OLDIFS=$IFS IFS=$'\n' ## Fill an Array with all CLI input declare -a CLIARRAY CLIARRAY=( "$@" ) ## Step through CLIARRAY with ls to expand wildcards and process ## files specified on the command line sequentially. I had used it like: 2nv /var/log/mes* /var/log/Xorg.* /var/log/kdm.log (the script name was 2nv (short for rsync to nirvana) but it allow chunks to be thown into it and it would nicely rsync the wanted files to their destination. Listmates Does anybody know who has the originals of the wallpapers in /usr/share/archlinux/wallpaper? I as because I would like to get the backgrounds but have the arch logo moved to the lower left corner instead of the center or the right where they are covered by the kde4 weather app and CPU meter. I don't mind putting the arch logos back on just the plain backgrounds, but with the textures and patterns involved, there aren't something you can just move the logo on. [arch-general] Kernel Updates & radeonhd -- what does that mean for me compiling the radeonhd from git?

Guys, I don't know exactly how the kernel changes would effect me compiling and installing the radeonhd module from the radeonhd git repository (if at all). My question is "If I compile and install the radeonhd driver, will the new kernel setup use my module or will it use so precompiled module that is built into the kernel?" In the past, for testing all I had to do was build drm and build the radeonhd driver, install both and restart X. How does the new setup effect that? Here is a patch for rc.sysinit to automatically mount the kernel's debugfs, if available. (I switched from Gentoo to Arch two days ago and first sent this message to arch-dev-public which turned out to be read-only. Listmates, I did a fresh install of 2009.08 on a new box and I am getting a weird pacman error where pacman doesn't recognize the first "Server" statement in mirrorlist. (2009.08 installed perfectly) All 3 of my other arch boxes work fine with the mirrorlist file and do not give the error. I have even copied the mirrorlist from one of my other boxes to the new box and the error still occurs. Even though I get the error, pacman works just fine. Hello all! I remember looking at the installation script about one year ago, and all it had done (to install the base packages), was to use pacman. Now if I try to use the same procedure now (or what I remember from it), I get a lot of errors from the install hooks (script-lets). I've tried to install them once without by disabling scriptlets, and then once more by using them, but the errors are still there. So my question is: how can I install Arch Linux now, by having only a static built pacman? (I want to use this for an automated installation procedure for virtual machines.) (I think I've tried the procedure on the Wiki page with the same outcome.) Thanks, Ciprian Craciun. P.S.: Maybe it's Ok to have those scriptlet errors?

I've built the new Xorg 7.5 based on xorg-server 1.7.1rc1 and Mesa 7.6. Some very old drivers have been dropped because they are no more developed and won't build anymore. I hope I have updated all essential parts. Some Xorg fonts related packages still need a bump. Mesa 7.6 is built right now plain upstream. This means Gallium 3d stack for Nouveau and Intel. For Intel we might go back to old way DRI when we can't solve some existing issues. Radeon is built the old DRI way. Let's pray the update goes smooth. So far only Jan has played with Intel drivers. We will probably need some time until all important regressions and bugs have been solved. Good luck. -Andy

I noticed that my conky hard drive free space reading dropped from 50+GB free on /home to under 10GB. I did "du /home/martins/ --max-depth=1 -h" and it showed that "48G /home/martins/.VirtualBox" is eating up all the space. After that I did "du /home/martins/.VirtualBox/ -h" Output was this: 48G /home/martins/.VirtualBox/Machines/win_xp/Logs 48G /home/martins/.VirtualBox/Machines/win_xp 48G /home/martins/.VirtualBox/Machines 48G /home/martins/.VirtualBox/ This output is showing something very wrong and I checked all my files with thunar. all files were small with hidden files shown. My virtual disk files(.vdi) are stored on /mnt/extra(other hard drive). I used virtualbox earlier today so it did something most likely Any ideas what could be wrong?

Currently samba has just been upped to 3.3.8. However the current 'stable' for samba according to their website is 3.4.2. As I'm sure the maintainer already knows about this, I'm wondering which of the changes in samba 3.4 (listed http://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.4.0.html initially) is holding up adoption of the package. Is it (as I suppose) the changeover to tdbsam breaking current configs? My interest in this is that samba 3.4 has samba4 sources available which could potentially be used for a merged-build. Unfortunately the build process for samba (as seen in the samba 3.3 PKGBUILD) is really scary for me, so I'm hesitant to try it out, also I would have no way of knowing if any eventual samba 3.4 package would be able to replace samba 3.3 functionality. Basically this is something between a 'flag out-of-date' and a feature request.

I have a permission issue when using the kernel26-lts with my usb printer. The device doesn't always get "lp" group. Especially when I switch it off and on again. Then new cups 1.4.x can't find the printer. With kernel 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 the group is always set well. I already asked a few udev upstream devs without a solution so far. See http://www.spinics.net/lists/hotplug/msg02798.html It would be nice if some of you could try confirming my problem and maybe you can help me to find the reason why it fails on my server. I'm having the following issue: after opening and closing some shells within the same screen session, I'm left with a bunch of defunct bash processes, that screen doesn't seem to wait for... Is there any issue with screen? Or is there any issue in general, as Firefox plugin FireGPG seems to do the same with gpg. (Which it didn't on Debian.) Thanks, Ciprian.

[arch-general] Overly large fonts in X11 after rebooting

For some reason when I turned my laptop on today and started X, all my fonts were larger than normal. The only one that seems to have the stayed has been my console font, but even that feels a bit "off" (however, I'm not too worried about that, it could be that I'm sitting slightly closer than normal; the rest are most certainly measurably larger, though). The only difference between now and previously is that I don't have my external monitor plugged in, but my resolution didn't change, and I've used this computer without the external before without problems. It's just simply bigger; I turned down the GTK font, which seems to have worked for some apps (like firefox and pidgin), but the fonts are unbearably large for some websites: http://logik.li/images/screenshots/arrakis/large_fonts_in_some_places.png A few months ago I had a similar problem with certain sites having large fonts, and never really managed to solve it, one day after reinstalling it just went away and never came back until now. This was probably related. Hi folks, My system is uptodate with the current testing repo. During bootup today I noticed the error message: /etc/rc.sysinit: line 364: /dev/tty[0-9]*: no such file or directory To my surprise, only /dev/tty was present, but none of tty0..9. Instead there was a device literally named '/dev/tty[0-9]*' !! I deleted the latter, and attempted to create the missing ones with mknod. But I think I took the wrong major number, and now my system has started to behave a bit crazy... Any idea what I should do to restore it to sanity? Thanks, F

Hey all, libtorrent-rasterbar is pretty out of date (2 months and 2 package versions), so here's a PKGBUILD for the new version. I bumped the pkgver (obviously), added python to the dependency list since we *ARE* building the python bindings... and I set the package to use the system libgeoip/geoip rather than the one bundled in the libtorrent tarball (which is a new configure option in libtorrent-rasterbar 0.14.6). It also checks out fine with namcap (no warnings or errors) and it compiled perfectly on the i686 box I tested it on. Part of the reason i'd like to see this updated is that Deluge 1.2.0_rc1 is out and myself and probably a few other Arch users would like to use it, but it requires libtorrent-rasterbar >=0.14.5 . Hi, list, I am trying to use my wireless card to share a wired connection. I have an Intel 4965AGN card, and I am fairly confident that this should be possible; however, I've been unsuccessful after a few hours of trying and Googling. The issue seems to be that the card won't enter master mode. Trying to set it up manually with `iwconfig wlan0 mode master` results in "SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument." (As an interesting side note, I can easily put it into ad-hoc, managed, or even monitor mode this way.) Using hostapd (with the nl80211 driver) fails with the message "Failed to set interface wlan0 to master mode." According to `iw phy0 info`, the supported interface modes are IBSS, managed, and monitor. I booted up an Ubuntu 9.04 live CD and compared the output of `iw phy phy0 info` there, and indeed, AP and AP(VLAN) (I believe) were also present in the list. I've tried on Arch with both the current 2.6.30 kernel and the 2.6.31 kernel in [testing], and neither has worked. The version of iwlwifi-4965-ucode I have installed is 228.61.2.24-1. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how to fix it? I'll happily provide any further information that might be relevant. -Adam Lloyd

Hi! I'm experimenting a really bad behaviour from the X server, since yesterday night's update, which involved mainly KDE. When I press ENTER, in whichever applications or DM, the X server randomly reset just as I pressed ctrl-alt-backspace! For example, I had to start this email three times, and I have to resist to press the damn key. As I said, this happens in any applications (inkscape, NetBeans, Lyx, xterm, kmail, kwrite, anything), in KDE and FluxBox. I'm running NVIDIA proprietary drivers in a twinview configuration. I'm going to do some testing to isolate better the causes, but in the meantime, does someone of you has a suggestions? Ok, I got it now. Putting radeon into MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf wasn't enough, I had to put intel_agp in there as well. Now it works this way. But there's still something to discuss: When my mkinitcpio.conf looks like this MODULES="intel_agp radeon" BINARIES="" HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata filesystems" udev uevents takes about 3700ms at boottime. But as soon as I add FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf" with a options radeon modeset=1 in the modprobe.conf, it takes only about 800ms. I guess if we get enough input from many testers, it might be ok to activate kms for radeon by default. Those guys, who have problems, might consider trying it again with this stuff I found out, maybe that solves your problems too. army

Good day everyone I have a suggestion. if you take a look at the packages in aur, most of them are always up to date, the reason that I can find is the "flag out-of-date" feature, this is very interesting because in aur you also have the possibility to propose a new PKGBUILD ( in the comments) that would set the package as up to date and usually the maintainer just have to check that everything is ok with the PKGBUILD and do copy-paste. is it possible to have something similar for core, extra and community repos? I know you can submit a bug, but at least in my case I got lazy to do that because is not a simple process, but in aur I do it frequently because you just have to press a simple button. Hello, Plasma crashes several times a day on my Arch Linux installation (32 bit) with a segmentation fault and recovers immediately. The problem has been occured since the release of version 4.3.0. I did not remember such a problem using version 4.2.x. My system is up-to-date, installed software is taken only from the official repositories core, extra and community, the desktop effects are enabled and the graphics card driver is the nvidia closed source one. According to the FHS, /srv is for "site-specific" data served by the host: http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#SRVDATAFORSERVICESPROVIDEDBYSY… IMHO, this means webapps. The FHS makes specific mention that a distribution must take care not to touch user files in this directory, which infers that it is acceptable (expected?) that distributions will put files here. I also strongly agree that user modifyable files (eg, configuration files) must not be put anywhere in /usr and splitting the configuration into /etc like non-webapps is just a security nightmare. We also want to avoid untrusted processes like apache/lighttpd having read/write access into /usr where ever possible. Referring to the FHS again: "*/usr** is shareable, read-only data. That means that /usr should be shareable between various FHS-compliant hosts and must not be written to. Any information that is host-specific or varies with time is stored elsewhere.*" Keywords: "read-only", "must not be written to" and "host-specific"

Is there a specific reason why rc.shutdown only shutsdown daemons if the previous runlevel was 3 or 5? It's the line that is: if [ "$PREVLEVEL" = "3" -o "$PREVLEVEL" = "5" ]; then I use both runlevel 4 and 5 (to use different login managers) and when shuting from 4 it will sometimes not shutdown clean. Can we actually do without this check for runlevels? It is additionally not compatible with Upstart, I understand Upstart is not supported in Arch in any way, but still more flexible rc.xxx scripts in Arch would be a good thing afterall. -- damjan

The openswan package in core is rather old. I've updated the PKGBUILD for the latest version, 2.6.23. This includes rather a lot of build changes - some are cleanup that could have happened before, some are new for upstream changes. I built this to investigate whether I could use it instead of strongSwan. I could not get it to work for my purposes, but rather than let that work go to waste, I figured I'd submit the PKGBUILD here.

Hi, I am part of a group of people who run a mirror for some GNU/Linux distros. I have a question regarding how rsync works. The question is prompted by the frequent overloading of rsync mirrors. If I am not mistaken the overall idea behind rsync is the following (I am assuming that dest wants to update form src) (1) dest computes a signature of the current snapshot of its file system sends to src. (2) src goes over the its current snapshot and calculates a delta (changes) from the signature that dest sends. (3) src then sends the delta to dest and dest updates. Although this seems fine for a single source single destination system, doesint it lead to overloading of src when there are multiple dest, like in the case of mirroring, src has to compute the delta which is a time consuming process. Alternatively if the src can do the delta computation once and for all then it will improve the efficiency a lot. One can imagine that a destination mirror can keep track of a snapshot time when it last synced and send the src just this. src keeps track of all the deltas, somewhat like rdiff-backup and then sends the dest all the deltas that will get it uptodate. I am having problems with the texlive package. I tried to install the package texlive-most and here is the error that pacman throws /usr/share/texmf-dist/bibtex/bib/amsrefs/amsj.bib exists in both 'texlive-core' and 'texlive-bibtexextra' /usr/share/texmf-dist/bibtex/bst/amsrefs/amsra.bst exists in both 'texlive-core' and 'texlive-bibtexextra' [many similar lines] Looks like ams packages have got into bot texlive-core and texlive-latexextra. Guys, Just a note. Most of you are probably a bit younger than I am, but for those with kids who have reached computing age (3+), there are a few kde4 themes and tricks they may really enjoy. Hello, I've been meaning to ask. What's going on with the thunderbird package? Version 2.0.0.23 was released more than month ago, it isn't usual with Arch for such a package to be left outdated for so long (especially since it is a security update). I know I can use ABS and rebuild it myself and I have, but still. Is there a particular reason for the delay? Shouldn't a bug report be created (when package remains out of date for this long)? I had problems with ocaml yesterday. After the machine locked up during the updates, I did a hard reset, and ran pacman -Su again. It continued downloading ocaml, but when all the updates were downloaded, it failed to install them, claiming that ocaml was corrupted. I removed the corrupted ocaml as requested, and as I'm on dialup and didn't want to download 38MB of ocaml again last night, I temporarily added an IgnorePkg line for it. Ran pacman -Su again, and all the updates apart from ocaml, and also gnupg2, which couldn't be found, were installed. Today I went to install the ocaml update, having removed it from the IgnorePkg line. It starts to download, but then throws an error as below. error: error writing to file '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/ocaml....' :Bad address Harddrive partition is redlining, and the partly downloaded ocaml file shows as 2GB size. Any ideas on a fix for this problem? As an aside, pacman was updated, but not before the other updates, in case that is what has caused the problem. Nigel.

Hello, I've been trying to figure out why Java applets wouldn't work on my system in Opera. (I'm using jre/jdk from [community], not openjdk6 from [extra].) From what I've found out: you set up a "Java directory" in Opera preferences (this path is then written to .opera/javapath.txt) and Opera looks for libjava.so there. At the same time Opera also looks for libjvm.so there (or it is the first place where Opera looks, more on that bellow). The problem is that jre package contains libjava.so in /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/, while libjvm.so is in "server" subdirectory (/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/server). That causes Opera not to find it and disable Java completely. I ran strace and these are relevant lines to show where Opera tries to find libjvm.so: open("/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/usr/lib/opera/10.00/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64//native_threads/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 107 open("/lib/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/usr/lib/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) This lead me to an idea of creating symlink to /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so in /usr/lib/opera/10.00, which worked and now I can see applets in Opera properly. Now the question is, who's fault is it? Opera's? Jre's? And more importantly, can it be solved in a way that doesn't require users to create symlinks as root? Either opera package could create the aforementioned link, only that is ugly for those not using jre package. Or jre package could create the link into /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/. Or maybe even move the files from the "server" subdirectory to the upper directory (there are only three of them and I have no idea why they are in such a subdirectory)? I have problems to install nexuiz on my system. Its a 64bit system and up to date synced to ftp://mir1.archlinuxfr.org. This mirror have synced since the last updates of nexuiz and nexuiz-data. If I install nexuiz with pacman -S nexuiz then the following messages are displayed: resolving dependencies... warning: cannot resolve "nexuiz-data", a dependency of "nexuiz" :: the following package(s) cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies: nexuiz Do you want to skip the above package(s) for this upgrade? Archers, I have always liked the opera browser, but one thing that has really sucked about it was the crappy file open/file save dialogs opera comes with. Picking around tonight, I ran across an option in opera's configuration that allows you to choose the file selector dialogs to use. It is cryptic as hell, but I found the commit page for the changes and got the needed information. To make use of real kde4 open/save dialogs in opera, got to the config page by typing "opera:config" into the address bar, the scroll down to "File Selector", then change the setting to "2". The commit notes say: 0 - normal 1 - Qt 2 - GTK For some reason, I couldn't get Qt to work, so I select "2" for GTK, and Bingo! I had usable dialogs in opera (you may need to restart opera). What a relief. If you use opera, it's worth a look. While on the subject, you might want to check out the C00-14, Keramik and crystal_onyx_bull skins. Opera has come a long way in 10.0 -- David C. [arch-general] Why doesn't Arch show full kernel version in uname-r?

Guys, When I do uname -r to get the kernel name, I never get the full versions information about the installed kernel. Example, tonight, the new kernel is: kernel26-2.6.31.1-1-x86_64 but when I do a uname -r, I only see: "2.6.31-ARCH". That doesn't tell me anything about the minor version, etc. and if that information is wanted, then you have to look at the cache or some other software package that would disclose this. As another example, on an older suse box I have uname -r gives: 2.6.25.20-0.5-pae. That tells me exactly version I'm running. Any reason the rest of the version string inst included in this naming? Hi all, I've installed openproj from AUR and met the following issue: the program runs, but the main GUI window is blank (no buttons, menus - nothing), although the dialog windows appear normal. I don't have much experience with java, and tried both jre and openjdk6 - with the same result. Then I tried to run openproj without any window manager, and it worked! I noticed that openjdk6 warns: when you use a non-reparenting window manager set _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1 in /etc/profile.d/openjdk6.sh So the setting of that env. variable indeed helps with openjdk6, but not with jre. Guys, I'm curious. Since there is now an LTS kernel, has anyone thought about adding a few lines of code to the Arch boot process that would provide for automatic failover to the LTS kernel in the event the normal kernel failed to load during the boot process. The thought is to provide redundancy for servers in the case where the regular kernel becomes corrupt (for whatever reason, disk problem, etc...) and a reboot is forced (exhausted UPS, etc..) I don't know what it would take or if it is doable. I had just envisioned adding a trap that catches the failure of the regular kernel to boot, checks for the presence of the LTS kernel, and if installed boots the LTS kernel in this case. I haven't looked deep enough into the Arch boot process to know if it is feasible, but it just seemed like a good bit of extra protection that Arch could provide for server installs where the server operates on the regular kernel but also has LTS installed as a backup. I'll leave it to the gurus to consider. If it's not doable or not worth doing, then just consider it another of my stray thoughts worthy of the DEL key ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hello, Asunder (in [Community]) has an optional dependency on musepack-tools SV8 (not actually included in the PKGBUILD). Musepack-tools in [Community] is version SV7 while the current stable (SV8) has been available since March. Trying to make a pkgbuild I noticed that it depends on two libraries (libcuefile and libreplaygain) which are obtainable only through musepack's svn. It would be nice if it was easily possible to compare a pkgbuild against a corresponding 'official' pkgbuild (from ABS). disclaimer: i haven't thought this through so here are some ideas. consider this a brainstorm - on AUR, many packages are customized versions (patches, vcs versions, alternative compile options,..) of official packages so maybe AUR packagers could fill in an official packagename as 'base' package. the webinterface could then show a diff against the official pkgbuild - maybe this can be done on the makepkg level by passing some flag. it would be less point and click but would work for non-aur pkgbuilds. - everything in 1 big git repo: official packages, community, AUR,.. through branching they can be nicely separated but it would make things easier to generate diffs. dieter

[arch-general] [PATCH 0/3] Three smelly patches for commitpkg

First two patches are somewhat trivial. The third one adds support for uploading packages to multiple architectures. Let me explain the rationale behind the last patch. My workflow goes something like this: 1) sudo makechrootpkg -c -r /opt/arch/stable-i686 2) sudo makechrootpkg -c -r /opt/arch/stable-x86_64 3) scp *pkg* aur.archlinux.org:staging/community 4) source PKGBUILD; svn commit -m "$pkgname $pkgver-$pkgrel random message" 5) archrelease community-i686 6) archrelease community-x86_64 7) ssh aur.archlinux.org /arch/db-community As you can see, I'm doing all steps manually (which is time-consuming and prone to errors). Unless I'm missing an existing way to upload packages to both architectures using commitpkg (via its communitypkg symlink), the third patch can help automate steps 3-6 above. I uploaded one package (that needed updating) using the modified commitpkg and it worked as expected. However, more testing is needed, especially with split packages. Please let me know what you think. :)

Listmates, I have been chasing my tail on the madwifi issue and I think I have found the problem. It's not madwifi at all, it's the timezone handling. My box is dual-boot, Arch - Vista. Accordingly, the hardware clock is set to localtime: LOCALE="en_US.utf8" HARDWARECLOCK="local" USEDIRECTISA="no" TIMEZONE="America/Chicago" KEYMAP="us" However, I have been dumped into the recovery console each time I have booted for the past day or so. I wasn't alarmed at first because I have several hard drives for the box and I switch back and forth. One drive just contains linux so the hwclock is set to UTC for that setup and then set two localtime for the two other dual-boot drives. So when I reinstall a drive, it isn't uncommon to need to reset the clock and run fsck to get the hwclock and system happy for the new config. While trouble-shooting the madwifi issue, I booted again this morning and was again dumped into the recovery console to run fsck again. Looking at the clock, something had set the clock backwards 5 hours. (American/Chicago -6, +1 for daylight savings = -5 tz offset). This should not have happened. I know this is related to something in a recent update. The pacman log is here: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/config/wireless/pacman.log.bz2 I noticed this morning that another tzdata update: tzdata-2009m-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz But this did fix the problem. It seems no matter what I do, each time I boot, the time gets adjusted backwards by the zoneinfo offset. I have set/confirmed the hardware and sys clocks: [13:05 alchemy:/home/david] # date Tue Sep 22 13:09:56 CDT 2009 [13:09 alchemy:/home/david] # date -u Tue Sep 22 18:09:59 UTC 2009 [13:09 alchemy:/home/david] # hwclock -r Tue 22 Sep 2009 01:10:06 PM CDT -1.000347 seconds and I have set hwclock --localtime and confirmed the same time setting with --systohc, but still, each time I boot, the time is 5 hours in the past. I have confirmed /etc/localtime is in fact the same as /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago: [13:10 alchemy:/home/david] # diff /etc/localtime /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago So, I'm stumped. I certainly haven't changed any of the Arch settings for timezone handling since I installed arch in what -- March/April? So why all of a sudden is Arch subtracting 5 hours from my hwclock on either shutdown or boot? I know the checks are done in /etc/rc.sysinit and /etc/rc.shutdown, but what could have changed to make Arch want to treat the box as if the time were set to UTC? What else to check? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Listmates, I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting this problem. For months and months, ever since I installed Arch, my Atheros wifi (through ath0) has always just worked right out of the box. No biggie. You setup your /etc/network.d/mywpa.conf and add your config to the NETWORKS entry and then each time I would turn on my box, up came the network. That is, until the updates this past week or so. My config is still the same. The mywpa.conf file is: CONNECTION="wireless" INTERFACE=wlan0 SCAN="yes" SECURITY="wpa" ESSID="skyline" KEY="notmyrealkey" IP="dhcp" TIMEOUT=20 My rc.conf setting hasn't changed: eth0="dhcp" INTERFACES=(!eth0) gateway="default gw 192.168.6.13" ROUTES=(!gateway) NETWORKS=(!main mywpa.conf) DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network net-profiles hal @ntpd @sshd @crond @netfs @avahi- daemon @mysqld !postfix !dovecot !httpd !samba @cups kdm3) Now I boot my box and I get nothing but the "lo" interface brought up. What gives? To comply with the new warning about modprobe "blacklist", etc. all of the specified and empty files were moved from /etc/modprobe.d to /root/tmp. My wireless needs the ath_pci module and the ath5k module has always caused problems, so I added the "!ath5k" entry to the modules line before the ath_pci declaration and ath_pci is correctly loaded on boot, but still no wlan0 or ath0 devices are created. As a work-around while this is being sorted, I have been brining the device up with ifconfig ath0 up, then starting wpa_supplicant manually and then finally calling dhcpcd manually to get an IP. What in the world could have changed in the past week or so that is presenting my wireless from being brought up at boot?? Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Hi, since 2.6.30.x (i could not exactly say if also with the latest 2.6.29.x) stock kernels i have a terrible slow ethernet transfer rate on my old Thinkpad T22 (Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 SP, module e100). Normal transfer rate ex. to a mirror is for me ~700Kb/s but i got only ~80-90 Kb/s. And a bunch of RX overruns and frame errors. I could solve it by following workarounds: a) Disable ACPI (acpi=off), but this is the ugliest workaround. b) When i generate CPU-Load (ex: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null) the transfer rate goes immediately up to normal and the RX error rate increasing stops. Stopping the dd the rate goes down again. So i thought it could be a timer/IRQ problem. I tried different acpi= and pci= kernel parameters without success. Also tried to isolate the Ethernet device to a non-shared IRQ. c) Current working solution is if i use nohz=off as kernel param. But testing with an 2.6.28 kernel i have installed on this TP there is CONFIG_NO_HZ=y also set (diff is only that this kernel has CONFIG_HZ=1000 and 2.6.30/31 CONFIG_HZ=300, but AFAIK if bootet with NOHZ these settings are ignored (tickless)). So there must be a signifikant change in >= 2.6.30 (tested 2.6.31 from testing also). Anyone has an idea to solve it without nohz parameter? I also could report it to LKML if this seems a bug (for me it is). Regards Gerhard

The PKGBUILD at /var/abs/extra/postgresql-libs has version 8.4.0-1 (a version that was in testing a little while back), while the version in extra is still 8.3.7-2. This seems very dangerous since it would be easy for a non-testing user to give themselves an unintended soname bump. I'm guessing this happens because that's both the trunk and extra version for this package in svn? Might it be worthwhile to backout revs 49331 and 49332, which have this change and nothing more? Or am I missing something here?

Before upgrading to vim 7.2.245-1 I removed vi, gvim and vim with pacman -R then I installed only vim 7.2.245-1 and I see my scripts and plugins for autocompition, buffers on top of window... are not working anymore. Anybody had some similar experience? Is there any fix for this or I need to start from begining and to search for scripts/plugins again and to install them from scratch? Thanks. Following the community-deleting accident, a bunch of mirrors that are usually up to date have only synced once, and are now 30+ hours out of date. A bunch of other mirrors still haven't synced at all since community was repaired, and are now 3+ days stale. Is there something else going on now? What's up with Arch's mirror network?

Hi , catalyst was removed from the repos for months (now available from the AUR) but the build files are still in svn trunk : http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/catalyst/trunk/ That causes tools like pbget (which can search for build files in svn then AUR) to fetch the old broken unsupported build files instead of the updated ones from AUR . catalyst-utils is still in trunk too . Shouldn't a maintenance script catch this ?

Hello list, I just installed archlinux on a very old laptop of mine PIII at 500MHz with 128MB RAM. I am planning on using it as a desktop... I should mention two facts. First is that I installed from CD succesfully without problems. I remember in the past the installer would fail with such amount of ram but it seems today's squashfs goodness is paying back... So what are the current minimum requirements? The other is that I had trouble finding a truly lightweight X terminal (there were times when xterm was considered bloated ;) so I packaged myself rxvt. Most other distributions offer it so in case you decide to include it I attach the PKGBUILD. I'm wondering, what's the oldest equipment you run archlinux on? Is it for desktop or server usage? [arch-general] Please update the "gavl" package or gstreamer will continue breaking

Hey, the current gavl package in [community] is seemingly compiled with wrong CFLAGS and thus it breaks on older CPUs in conjunction with the newest gstreamer update. I flagged the package a week ago and shot the maintainer a mail but no answer. Can somebody update the package real quick please? Doing so will fix FS#16060.
