Java code in AUR

Hello, I have discovered an annoying issue with java within the AUR. One of the projects I aim to wrap is written in java, however it contains a lot of other dependencies in java, and I have been thinking about the idea of how to package, and installing a jar with all the dependencies compressed within it defeats the purpose of packaging. I assume I should have each dependency as its own package, which means its more maintainable and each dependency can be bumped manually, but I doubt it is conventional to put .jar's in with shared objects (.so) within the libraries directory. Does anyone have any ideas how you would package a large Java codebase with the dependencies separated to be more maintainable? I am aware Java is such a pain to package, distributions such as gentoo do not even bother sometimes and do not support java packaging that well. Thanks, Polarian

Does cloning a pkgbase (whatever name you want to call the package) automatically create the remote repository? PKGBUILD: on makedepends

hi. i am putting together a PKGBUILD. there are certain dependencies required for cutting a release, rolling a version, etc. but, for just downloading the sources and building, these dependencies are not needed. can i leave dependencies *out* of makedepends that are only used for non-mainline build/installation tasks? cheers, Greg

Conventional method of producing -git packages

Hello, I am pretty new to the AUR, however I have read through the arch wiki and this question is not really referenced there. I have seen some -git packages which update the package on each new commit to master, which is what I thought -git packages should aim to do, however I have seen others which only do it for every 5 or so commits to save time. However I have also seen another method, of just not bumping the package version and have the package clone master and then append the latest git commit to the package name when building it. What is the actual conventional method of producing a -git package for a piece of software? Thank you, Polarian

Change pkgbase from python2-eyed3 to python-eyed3

Hello all, I am maintainer of a package which has pkgname as python-eyed3 but has pkgbase as python2-eyed3. This package was moved from Arch repository to AUR few months back. The package does not work on python2 but works on python3 and hence I am trying to remove pkgbase=python2-eyed3 from it, as it gives wrong impression that package is dependent on python2. If I remove pkgbase line from PKGBUILD and then try to push the package (with updated .SRCINFO) it throws the following error: > git push Enumerating objects: 7, done. Hi! I'm Torsten Keßler (tpkessler in AUR and on GitHub) from Saarland, a federal state in the south west of Germany. With this email I'm applying to be become a trusted user. After graduating with a PhD in applied mathematics this year I'm now a post-doc with a focus on numerical analysis, the art of solving physical problems with mathematically sound algorithms on a computer. I've been using Arch Linux on my private machines (and at work) since my first weeks at university ten years ago. After initial distro hopping a friend recommended Arch. I immediately liked the way it handles packages via pacman, its wiki and the flexibility of its installation process. Owing to their massively parallel architecture, GPUs have emerged as the leading platform for computationally expensive problems: Machine Learning/AI, real-world engineering problems, simulation of complex physical systems. For a long time, nVidia's CUDA framework (closed source, exclusively for their GPUs) has dominated this field. In 2015, AMD announced ROCm, their open source compute framework for GPUs. A common interface to CUDA, called HIP, makes it possible to write code that compiles and runs both on AMD and nVidia hardware. I've been closely following the development of ROCm on GitHub, trying to compile the stack from time to time. But only since 2020, the kernel includes all the necessary code to compile the ROCm stack on Arch Linux. Around this time I've started to contribute to rocm-arch on GitHub, a collection of PKGBUILDs for ROCm (with around 50 packages). Soon after that, I became the main contributor to the repository and, since 2021, I've been the maintainer of the whole ROCm stack. We have an active issue tracker and recently started a discussion page for rocm-arch. Most of the open issues as of now are for bookkeeping of patches we applied to run ROCm on Arch Linux. Many of them are linked to an upstream issue and a corresponding pull request that fixes the issues. This way I've already contributed code to a couple of libraries of the ROCm stack. Over the years, many libraries have added official support for ROCm, including tensorflow, pytorch, python-cupy, python-numba (not actively maintained anymore) and blender. Support of ROCm for the latter generated large interest in the community and is one reason Sven contacted me, asking me if I would be interested to take care of ROCm in [community]. In its current version, ROCm support for blender works out of the box. Just install hip-runtime-amd from the AUR and enable the HIP backend in blender's settings for rendering. The machine learning libraries require more dependencies from the AUR. Once installed, pytorch and tensorflow are known to work on Vega GPUs and the recent RDNA architecture. My first action as a TU would be to add basic support of ROCm to [community], i.e. the low level libraries, including HIP and an open source runtime for OpenCL based on ROCm. That would be enough to run blender with its ROCm backend. At the same time, I would expand the wiki article on ROCm. The interaction with the community would also move from the issue tracker of rocm-arch to the Arch Linux bug tracker and the forums. In a second phase I would add the high level libraries that would enable users to quickly compile and run complex libraries such as tensorflow, pytorch or cupy. #BEGIN Technical details The minimal package list for HIP which includes the runtime libraries for basic GPU programming and the GPU compiler (hipcc) comprises eight packages * rocm-cmake (basic cmake files for ROCm) * rocm-llvm (upstream llvm with to-be-merged changes by AMD) * rocm-device-libs (implements math functions for all GPU architectures) * comgr (runtime library, "compiler support" for rocm-llvm) * hsakmt-roct (interface to the amdgpu kernel driver) * hsa-rocr (runtime for HSA compute kernels) * rocminfo (display information on HSA agents: GPU and possibly CPU) * hip-runtime-amd (runtime and compiler for HIP, a C++ dialect inspired by CUDA C++) All but rocm-llvm are small libraries under the permissive MIT license. Since ROCm 5.2, all packages successfully build in a clean chroot and are distributed in the community repo arch4edu. The application libraries for numerical linear algebra, sparse matrices or random numbers start with roc and hip (rocblas, rocsparse, rocrand). The hip* packages are designed in such a way that they would also work with CUDA if hip is configured with CUDA instead of a ROCm/HSA backend. With few exceptions (rocthrust, rccl) these packages are licensed under MIT. Possible issues: There are three packages that are not fully working under Arch Linux or lack an open source license. The first is rocm-gdb, a fork of gdb with GPU support. To work properly it needs a kernel module currently not available in upstream linux but only as part of AMD's dkms modules. But they only work with specific kernel versions. Support for this from my side on Arch Linux was dropped a while ago. One closed source package is hsa-amd-aqlprofile. As the name suggests it is used for profiling as part of rocprofiler. Above mentioned packages are only required for debugging and profiling but are no runtime dependencies of the big machine learning libraries or any other package with ROCm support I'm aware of. The third package is rocm-core, a package only part of the meta packages for ROCm with no influence on the ROCm runtime. It provides a single header and a library with a single function that returns the current ROCm version. No source code has been published by AMD so far and the official package lacks a license file. A second issue is GPU support. AMD officially only supports the professional compute GPUs. This does not mean that ROCm is not working on consumer cards but merely that AMD cannot guarantee all functionalities through excessive testing. Recently, ROCm added support for Navi 21 (RX 6800 onwards), see https://docs.amd.com/bundle/Hardware_and_Software_Reference_Guide/page/Hard… I own a Vega 56 (gfx900) that is officially supported, so I can test all packages before publishing them on the AUR / in [community]. #END Technical details On the long term, I would like to foster Arch Linux as the leading platform for scientific computing. This includes Machine Learning libraries in the official repositories as well as packages for classical "number crunching" such as petsc, trilinos and packages that depend on them: deal-ii, dune or ngsolve. RFC / RFO: Extra (CI) files in AUR packages

Hey there, I'd like to fetch some comments / opinions regarding maintaining AUR packages with the help of automated build systems. I do maintain several packages in the AUR containing the typical files as `PKGBUILD`, `.SRCINFO`, files referenced in the `source()` section and a special script `update-version.sh`. This script is not mentioned in the PKGBUILD and not used during the build process. It contains the required steps to figure out the latest version of the package and to patch the PKGBUILD. This script is a) used to document how the package is updated and b) is used by my CI system (atm Jenkins) to check for updates and update the package. (Extra steps to verify the package is still building fine before doing any update are common to all packages and are executed after this package-specific script.) For most of my packages there were no complaints about this and users seem to be happy to get the updates usually delivered within an hour after release. Though in one package (librespeed-cli) I got two comments asking me to remove that script. Now I found no explicit statement in the package / AUR submission guidelines against this. Therefore I'd like to ask other maintainers / TUs for your opinions: Are you strictly against adding a script which documents / is used for the update? Is it fine to keep it there? Glad to hear it wasn't intentional. I find it very strange indeed that the system accepted the request. I don't remember it being flagged OOD but that's on me. Would you mind orphaning xenia-git so I can pick it up again? It would require some rebasing of the patch branches. Hello, I used to maintain xenia-git [1] and have since its creation. I am also the author of the Linux threading, windowing, debug and other patches that the package uses. At *19:20:00 UTC* today, an orphan request was submitted and immediately orphaned by user ilbuonmarcio. The user made no attempt to contact me about the issue either by email or in the comments. If they had, I would have responded as I usually do to issues in my packages. I am active on AUR and have been for over 10 years now. I usually can fix a package issue in a day to a week. According to the arch wiki: > Orphan requests will be granted after two weeks if the current maintainer did not react I was not given the time to react as it is now a few hours later. I asked him not to do so in the package page comments section. I also tried to email him directly and explained to him that this is a git package and it's not necessary to update it with every version. But, the package is still being flagged. What should I do? Hi, I have 2 questions: 1) when is it allowed and / or good practice to split multiple packages by 1 PKGBUILD? For example I have created a package which pulls 3 debian packages and creates 3 Arch packages from it. I want to do that in 1 PKGBUILD by package splitting. Is that a good idea or should this avoided (if so why..)? 2) I found a bug in package splitting regarding the variable "pkgdesc" - when in AUR: it simply gets ignored when used in package_<pkgname> functions. Hello, I maintain / administer the ungoogled-chromium project and its Arch Linux packaging. Last year I asked[1] about the submission rules for an ungoogled-chromium-bin package as previous packages have all been removed. Since then our GitHub Actions workflow for releases has been adjusted to hopefully comply with the requirements[2]. At the moment updates will be handled manually by me but the code for automating this already exists. Now it has come to my attention that the ungoogled-chromium-bin package is blacklisted due contentious violations by people not affiliated with the project itself. Would it be possible to remove this blacklist entry to be able to submit our binaries? I imagine that providing an official package will also stop people submitting packages with workaround names. I'm 22 years old, I live in Maryland (though I'm in Ireland for a couple more weeks), and I've been developing software to some degree for about a decade now. My hobbies involve software development, playing video games (some favorites being Titanfall 2 and ULTRAKILL), critiquing my friends' art and animation pieces, building computers, learning about space, and hugging my dogs. My favorite movies are Into the Spider-Verse and Interstellar. =============== HISTORY =============== Feel free to skip reading this if it gets boring! My exploits with programming started with programs on my TI-84 calculator to aid me in math class, and have culminated in closing in on a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, which I'll have by the end of this year. I've also landed a post-grad position as a software engineer working on non-classified software used by the Navy and Coast Guard, which will primarily involve working with RHEL and aiding with improvements to build systems and version control. I'm the sole developer of Wraith Master, an open-source application to configure the RGB LEDs on the Wraith Prism CPU cooler, and one of the core developers of the Budgie desktop environment. My first experience with Unix was with my family's iMac, which I used to begin my programming journey with software like QB64, then Python, Processing, and Java. In early 2017, after building a computer of my own, I elected to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu, so I could continue to use a Unix-like environment for the purposes of developing software. However, dissatisfaction with the Unity desktop led me to install Mint instead at the suggestion of others, followed by Solus. I ended up liking Solus enough to stick with it for the next four years and change. Soon after installing Solus, I began to investigate its processes for package submission and updating, and I decided to participate. I started with submitting packages for inclusion, then began to build packages myself, and eventually took up volunteer maintainership of packages. By the time I left Solus, I was maintaining the entire JVM stack, including handling the large-scale migration from JDK 8 to JDK 11 and patching software to facilitate that migration; in one excruciating case, I spent two full days patching modelio to build on JDK 11. I had also taken up maintainership of the Intel GPU compute stack, aka "neo", and several other miscellaneous packages like Kitty, libwacom, and shotcut. Occasionally, I would find reason to submit patches for packages to the upstream projects as well. In any case, I left Solus in January 2022, along with Joshua Strobl, one of the prior "core team" members. I would rather not air dirty laundry in a publicly available thread, so I won't go into details here, but it ultimately came down to a split between the "core team" members over serious issues with development and conduct that had been festering for some time. With the departure of Josh came the departure of Budgie, which became a standalone project backed by prior contributors, including myself. I had previously swapped out the system tray backend in Budgie for my own implementation of the XEMBED spec, which resolved numerous longstanding issues with the tray applet, and I wanted to continue moving Budgie forward now that it had been freed from the shackles of Solus. Upon leaving Solus, I decided to find a new distribution that could replace it on my personal machines. It had to satisfy the criteria of being rolling release, having up-to-date software in its repositories, having a fast package manager, and having Budgie as an option in its installer - so I elected to install EndeavourOS as a way of getting a somewhat curated experience on Arch. I had already been maintaining a couple AUR packages for Wraith Master for some time, so I had some experience with the PKGBUILD format already, and I decided to take up maintainership of Budgie's various AUR packages (mostly -git variants of existing packages) in order to update them to the new repository that had been set up under Buddies of Budgie. =============== END HISTORY =============== Ultimately, my motivation with applying to be a Trusted User is an extension of my prior motivation to aid with Solus packaging, and my motivation to maintain Budgie's AUR packages. Arch doesn't have a dedicated maintainer for Budgie's community packages, and I believe I would be an ideal candidate to fill that role. Though I haven't been on Arch for long, I have been maintaining packages for years, and I'm more than willing to learn and abide by the standards that Arch has set for its community and repositories. To address the minimum requirements: - I'm well acquainted with bash, sh, and csh (the latter not by choice...) - I maintain a few packages in the AUR with what I believe to be clean and quality PKGBUILDs - I've recently joined the Arch Matrix channel and plan to stay - I like to think my Google-Fu is well-trained! It had to be after the years I've spent being the dedicated technical support person for my family and friends... - I know exactly what packages I want to maintain as a start - the Budgie stack! As for the extra requirements: - I've reported some issues with Budgie packages on the bug tracker, so a little bit of involvement there - I have not submitted patches for Arch projects - I've been contributing to and maintaining open-source projects for years My first order of business after becoming a Trusted User would be to clean up the PKGBUILDs for the following Budgie packages: - budgie-desktop - budgie-desktop-view - budgie-screensaver Second order of business would be to move the AUR package "budgie-control-center" into the community repository, as it is a necessary component of the Budgie stack and has additionally reached the minimum requirements for inclusion. Finally, I would begin discussions of how the "budgie-extras" package could be modified or split, with cooperation from upstream if necessary. [aur-general] Python packaging: weird behaviour

Hello list, I'm currently trying to adapt my AUR packages to the new PEP 517 based build workflow [1]. Some users of the telegram-tg [2] package reported after I changed it to PEP 517, that they are missing the actual python files in the final package. I investigated a bit further and found out if I build with makechrootpkg (like I usually do) the files are inside the package (that's why I didn't notice), but if I use yay for example (which uses makepkg without a clean chroot), the package does not contain the files. Now I'm a bit confused and don't know how to debug this further, could somebody please help me or at least give me a hint? [aur-general] Python Package Update Review Request

Hello, I'm fairly new to the PEP 517 workflow for Python Packaging however python-dephell / setuptools have created a problem where deprecated components are being invoked which, after further research, I've learned are related to the streamdeck-ui package <https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/streamdeck-ui> I maintain (*that I didn't make, I adopted*) failing to build <https://pastebin.com/qNbJNH8y>. I believe I've figured out that updating to the PEP 517 workflow should allow the issues we're seeing to go away and allow building to work again for the foreseeable future because the updates would eliminate the need for the failing modules invoked for build() and if I've read this all correctly the standard update means the package would remaining usable for longer. If I could get a review of the attached PKGBUILD that would be great! [aur-general] Subdirectories: is my workaround acceptable?

Hi fellow AUR maintainers, Over time, I have refined my editor settings in Visual Studio Code to make working with PKGBUILDs more enjoyable. For example, I have added settings which, on a PKGBUILD-by-PKGBUILD basis, enforce a consistent style throughout the whole PKGBUILD. I also have settings to auto-enable shellcheck for linting. For several PKGBUILDs that I maintain, I’d like to share those settings with fellow contributors so whenever they open the directory that contains my PKGBUILD as a workspace in VS Code, it picks up those settings and applies them automatically so those contributors can enjoy zero-configuration linting and consistent styling. Now my issue here is: VS Code’s workspace-level settings live in a .vscode subdirectory so a team of contributors can share those settings via Git along with the project files. But I’ve noticed that aurweb appears to enforce some kind of no-subdirectories rule [1]. I started working around that limitation by including a tarball [2] with my PKGBUILDs instead of a .vscode directory. While aurweb would have rejected that directory, it does accept the tarball. - Do you find my workaround acceptable? Or would that go against the spirit of aurweb’s no-subdirectories rule? - What is the rationale behind the no-subdirectories rule, anyway? Thanks for your thoughts in advance. After an AUR package gets deleted by error, where is it possible for an user to request undeletion? Can a Trusted User directly restore deleted packages? If yes, I think it could be appropriate for me to request that role because I don't want to bother people eventually every few days. Would someone here be available for sponsorship? I've been an user for more than 10 years and I maintain around 130 packages on AUR, a dozen of which should definitely go to community; I also regularly write on the wiki and contribute to arch projects (those on gitlab) and have contributions on GNOME projects. Hi, the user MarsSeed[0] is spamming AUR packages which perform a pkgrel bump for perl version updates with a prewritten comment asking package maintainers not to do that, examples: [1][2][3]. While their reasoning is questionable, I think the AUR/TUs do not have an official stance on this, and I don't intend to debate it here - I just think this user shouldn't be spamming a bunch of packages with the same comment over and over. Hi All, I've tried to reach out to keenerd a couple of times about dropping some packages of him such as geda-gaf (which lets us drop guile2.0, gtk2 in the future etc.). But I haven't heard back about these mails. David has also tried to contact him about his key expiring and being unable to package after allan's master key will be revoked. Hi guys, The user InstallerLegacy [1] just adopted gnome-vfs [2], added himself, including a contact address, to the PKGBUILD head without any further changes, then orphaned the package again two minutes thereafter. Since the account has been created just today, maintains no packages and lists further contact information like a website URL and contact address, I suspect it to be a spam account. Hi all, this is a motion for "Special Removal of an Inactive TU" [1] for Andrzej Giniewicz (giniu) based on prolonged inactivity. After the removal of Andrzej's packager key due to Bartłomiej Piotrowski's main key removal [2] it has been the consensus for him to create a new packager key. However, this never happened and meanwhile Andrzej's last TU vote is 131 (we're at 136) and he has last logged in to the AUR on 2022-02-14. In January I reached out publicly [3] to ask for progress on the matter, but got no reply. Privately I have again attempted to reach out on 2022-04-08, stating that after two weeks of no reply this here process would be started. This time has now passed. The discussion period will last for three days, after that I will open the vote, which will last for five days. [aur-general] Renaming AUR Repository

Hi. I have an AUR repo named `ttf-jura`[1], which is a font package. After I read AUR Font Publishing wiki, I noticed I need to split TTF, OTF and variable variations, so I split `ttf-jura` as `ttf-jura`, `otf-jura` and `ttf-jura-variable` and changed pkgbase as `jura-font`. But since `ttf-jura` repo's pkgbase is `ttf-jura`, I cant push to repo with new pkgbase. Is it possible rename `ttf-jura` as `jura-font`[2], so I can push new, split version of it? Thanks. I'm not pushing to jura-font directly because it maybe conflict with ttf-jura, because it already exists. Recently vi-vim-symlink and neovim-symlinks were deleted from the AUR. These are used by a lot of people to set up their systems, and a lot of people want to know why [1]. They do not violate any AUR rules and have been available in the AUR for a very long time, well over 6 years for neovim-symlinks (about the time neovim became a thing) and over a decade for vi-vim-symlink, but I can't date that one as it predates the current AUR system by a long ways. The reason given for this was: > This is more appropriately managed via the user shell's > PATH/configuration. This is completely bogus. First off, PATH has nothing to do with anything here. Second, the shell's configuration doesn't work. Making aliases doesn't work when other programs call vi or vim. It doesn't even work for something like `sudo vim`. This is not a substitute in any way. Just because one TU doesn't find it personally useful or doesn't understand why someone would use a package doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. This is a similar situation to the -bin package issue, except there's not even a rule to misinterpret on this one. Hi My firewall is restrictive and won't allow outgoing traffic on tcp/22. github.com and gitlab.com both provide alternative addresses that use tcp/443. Is there something like this for AUR? I know I can just use a general proxy, but I don't have access to another network or computer to host my own, and all public VPNs and proxies that work in this network are slow. Thanks eNV25

Forwarding as I think my reply to "aur-requests" will not be actually delivered: Actually I leave this to the "Arch staff" to decide. Yes, you are right that this was created to "work around" issues in some AUR helpers and I did not know that this issue no longer exists. And as updating this dummy package is a separate step that was never automated I tend to forget to push version numbers there. So I would also prefer to have this package gone. Maybe the "decision makers" know better about the current situation about AUR helpers. I, myself, don't use any AUR helpers at all. If it is no longer needed, then please delete "vdr-api" and tell me so I can delete on the vdr4arch GitHub project, too. Hi, I've been searching the mailing list archives, but can't find any message about why bubbros has moved from AUR to the archive. https://github.com/aur-archive/bubbros I've got this installed and running on arch, but would like to have it available for others to easily install. I'm pretty comfortable with packaging, etc and moved from building Mageia RPMs across to Arch for quite a number of my systems. If it just needs someone to own it.. Hi everyone, I use ICEWM daily and I love it. Unfortunately, it is now orphaned [1] and will probably fallback to the AUR pretty soon due to the upcoming spring cleanup [2]. In that sense, I planned to adopt it on the AUR when it will land here. The thing is, I currently package and maintain only one package on the AUR at the moment (but I plan to create/maintain/co-maintain other packages in a near future). I still don't have a lot of experience with maintaining package on the AUR, I guess (at least, compared to people maintaining 100+ packages, even tho I'm working on it !). That being said, maintaining icewm looks fairly easy to me... Correct me if I'm wrong but, it is mostly about updating the "pkgver" variable and the "sha256sums" variable accordingly in the PKGBUILD [3] each time there's a new icewm release right ? [4] So what should I do ? Can I adopt it or do you guys think that I should leave that to someone else ? Maybe anyone already planned to adopt it (such as "bidulock" that already maintain the git version [5]) ? Hello good people and fellow miscreants, My name is Benjamin Denhartog, better known as sudoforge [0], and I'd like to formally submit an application to become a TU. I've maintained a few AUR packages for a while now [1], and you've probably seen me around and about in IRC (_mostly_ `#archlinux-offtopic` these days). Both Felix Yan (felixonmars) and Morten Linderud (Foxboron) have agreed to sponsor my application. I've been in, on, and around computers for my entire life (thanks fam), and have been involved in the open source community from the moment I started learning to program in the early 2000s. I currently work in the "DevOps" space, focusing on developer tooling, workflow automation, and all of the ancillary things that come with that, like infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, observability and remediation. I enjoy mentoring less experienced engineers (and people brand new to technology alike), having been a part of mentorship and educational programs both at work and in the public (via Meetup). Outside of things related to computers, I enjoy snowboarding, cooking, and trying to take halfway-decent pictures. I currently live in the Rocky Mountains, somewhere around 3050m (9150ft) elevation, where the oxygen is a bit thinner, just like the crowds (except for the tourist-heavy days). [aur-general] AUR v6.0.8 Status Update

Hi AURers, I've got a bit of a status update for all of you users regarding the state of the newly released >= v6.0.0 aurweb. It took a matter of days to get several quirks worked out, which were a result of a few reasons: - AUR historical database state not seen on local systems which the port was developed on - Unhandled cases - Problematic code We're now at v6.0.8, which contains fixes to all but one issue that we've come across. The issue will be described below. Remaining issue (RPC): In very rare occurrencies, a Redis transaction regarding the the current request count used to determine a user's ratelimiting incorrectly returns nothing, leading to an internal server error. While I believe this is quite a serious issue and am working to resolve it, this has been seen one time so far and every person and project I've communicated with and assessed has not run into the problem. It has not been a simple reproduction thus far, and so there is no solution just yet. Other than the issue listed above, there is one "issue" that is out of our control. When users search /packages with illegal characters (from uvicorn's standpoint), uvicorn returns a 502 and dumps a traceback regarding the issue. There is an issue up in their repository about it. Standard users should not see this. I will be keeping this thread up to date regarding the RPC ratelimit issue we've observed. I was trying to submit a package (apifox) to AUR some time ago when I found that my AUR account was suspended. I haven't logged into my AUR account for a long time, and I don't know why my account was suspended. I have been using Archlinux for many years and have never sent any harassing comments. I hope my account will be resumed or tell me the reason why the account was suspended. If I have acted inappropriately in the past that led to my account being suspended, I will take care of my behavior in the future. Thank you very much. I also found it difficult to find information about account suspensions on the web. It takes many keyword searches to find very little relevant content in the forums. It might be possible to add a description of account suspension to the AUR Wiki.

Today we take farewell of yaourt. Some of us remained steadfastly at yaourt's side, while it became old. It was a good friend. Until yesterday some of us used the manual build process, but in addition we checked the aur for updates and searched for software using yaourt and quite often we even used it to build packages. The brave yaourt existed for around 4 or 5 years without being maintained, but it still worked quite well. Today yaourt passed away. May yaourt rest in peace. ;)

Hello! I maintain the xen package in AUR, and I recently got a merge request on my private repo to split the libs off into a split package in order to make building packages for things like ocaml a little easier. Previously, packages depended on a now outdated xenstore package. I have a vague hope of someone picking up the package at some point for inclusion into [community], or at least to that standard. That said, I do want to be responsive to people. There aren't many -libs packages out there, so I'm wondering where the standard is, and searching around hasn't been fruitful for me so far. Any pointers would be welcome. Thanks!

Hello AUR users, First of all, I want to apologize: this was deployed about 6 hours ago without a prior announcement. This was completely my fault and done in a bit of haste. There are a few bugs seen so far which have been worked out and deployed, but there are some final patches waiting to be deployed on the morning of 2022-02-05, 6-8 hours from now. There are likely to be some other issues we have not yet encountered. We have introduced an error reporting system to let us know when these occur; if users hit an internal server error, a traceback will be logged out and a notification sent to a devops postmaster. They can then locate the traceback by a particular ID. So, as users run into serious issues, we'll get information about them automatically. That being said, I desperately ask that users who encounter bugs from here-on out which are not the result of an internal server error report them to us at https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/aurweb/-/issues using the Bug template. This kind of bug reporting will really help us. Now, on to what's changed for users: With the v6.0.0 release, aurweb now runs on Python using the Starlette/FastAPI framework. While a complete list of changes from v6.0.0 up to the current patch (v6.0.6) can be viewed at https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/aurweb/-/tags, I'd like to show a few notable changes at the bottom of this message. Regarding there have been some modifications to the RPC API endpoints which have broken some clients in AUR helpers. Some AUR helpers were using the `/rpc.php/` endpoint to query the RPC, but this was removed with the advent of v6.0.0. There are two issues here: our Python code redirects trailing slashes to their unslashed counterparts, and we did not support the `/rpc.php` endpoint at all: we supported the `/rpc` endpoint. These have been addressed in v6.0.6 with the following changes: - https://gitlab.archlinux.org/kevr/aurweb/-/commit/0c1bd982ea0958722366bc5a1… - https://gitlab.archlinux.org/kevr/aurweb/-/commit/101de8e7b18916dd84ae52d39… A deprecation notice will be posted regarding `/rpc.php`. Clients will have one month to migrate over to the `/rpc` endpoint, and we'll continue to support non-redirected trailing slash queries. Again, sorry for the inconvenience in that regard, and a few others. Changes ======= Release v6.0.0 - Python This documents UX and functional changes for the v6.0.0 aurweb release. Following this release, we'll be working on a few very nice features noted at the end of this article in Upcoming Work. Preface ------- This v6.0.0 release makes the long-awaited Python port official. Along with the development of the python port, we have modified a number of features. There have been some integral changes to how package requests are dealt with, so _Trusted Users_ should read the entirety of this document. Legend ------ There are a few terms which I'd like to define to increase understanding of these changes as they are listed: - _self_ - Refers to a user viewing or doing something regarding their own account - _/pkgbase/{name}/{action}_ - Refers to a POST action which can be triggered via the relevent package page at `/{pkgbase,packages}/{name}`. Grouped changes explained in multiple items will always be prefixed with the same letter surrounded by braces. Example: - [A] Some feature that does something - [A] The same feature where another thing has changed Infrastructure -------------- - Python packaging is now done with poetry. - SQLite support has been removed. This was done because even though SQLAlchemy is an ORM, SQLite has quite a few SQL-server-like features missing both out of the box and integrally which force us to account for the different database types. We now only support mysql, and should be able to support postgresql without much effort in the future. Note: Users wishing to easily spin up a database quickly can use `docker-compose up -d mariadb` for a Docker-hosted mariadb service. - An example systemd service has been included at `examples/aurweb.service`. - Example wrappers to `aurweb-git-(auth|serve|update)` have been included at `examples/aurweb-git-(auth|serve|update).sh` and should be used to call these scripts when aurweb is installed into a poetry virtualenv. HTML ---- - Pagers have all been modified. They still serve the same purpose, but they have slightly different display. - Some markup and methods around the website has been changed for post requests, and some forms have been completely reworked. Package Requests ---------------- - Normal users can now view and close their own requests - [A] Requests can no longer be accepted through manual closures - [A] Requests are now closed via their relevent actions - Deletion - Through `/packages` bulk delete action - Through `/pkgbase/{name}/delete` - Merge - Through `/pkgbase/{name}/merge` - Orphan - Through `/packages` bulk disown action - Through `/pkgbase/{name}/disown` - Deletion and merge requests (and their closures) are now autogenerated if no pre-existing request exists. This was done to increase tracking of package modifications performed by those with access to do so (TUs). - Deletion, merge and orphan request actions now close all (1 or more) requests pertaining to the action performed. This comes with the downside of multiple notifications sent out about a closure if more than one request (or no request) exists for them - Merge actions now automatically reject other pre-existing merge requests with a mismatched `MergeBaseName` column when a merge action is performed - The last `/requests` page no longer goes nowhere Package Bulk Actions: /packages ------------------------------- - The `Merge into` field has been removed. Merges now require being performed via the `/pkgbase/{name}/merge` action. Package View ------------ - Some cached metadata is no longer cached (pkginfo). Previously, this was defaulted to a one day cache for some package information. If we need to bring this back, we can. TU Proposals ------------ - A valid username is now required for any addition or removal of a TU. RPC --- - `type=get-comment-form` has been removed and is now located at `/pkgbase/{name}/comments/{id}/form`. - Support for versions 1-4 have been removed. - JSON key ordering is different than PHP's JSON. - `type=search` performance is overall slightly worse than PHP's. This should not heavily affect users, as a 3,000 record query is returned in roughly 0.20ms from a local standpoint. We will be working on this in aim to push it over PHP. Archives -------- - Added metadata archive `packages-meta-v1.json.gz`. - Added metadata archive `packages-meta-ext-v1.json.gz`. - Enable this by passing `--extended` to `aurweb-mkpkglists`. Performance Changes ------------------- As is expected from a complete rewrite of the website, performance has changed across the board. In most places, Python's implementation now performs better than the pre-existing PHP implementation, with the exception of a few routes. Notably: - `/` loads much quicker as it is now persistently cached forcibly for five minutes at a time. - `/packages` search is much quicker. - `/packages/{name}` view is slightly slower; we are no longer caching various pieces of package info for `cache_pkginfo_ttl`, which is defaulted to 86400 seconds, or one day. - Request actions are slower due to the removal of the `via` parameter. We now query the database for requests related to the action based on the current state of the DB. - `/rpc?type=info` queries are slightly quicker. - `/rpc?type=search` queries of low result counts are quicker. - `/rpc?type=search` queries of large result counts (> 2500) are slower. - We are not satisfied with this. We'll be working on pushing this over the edge along with the rest of the DB-intensive routes. However, the speed degredation is quite negligible for users' experience: 0.12ms PHP vs 0.15ms Python on a 3,000 record query on my local 4-core 8-thread system. Hello RPC users, There are a few problematic changes that have occurred with the aurweb v6.0.0 release regarding the RPC that I'd like to address here. With the v6.0.0 release, aurweb no longer uses PHP. Previously, the Wiki has shown `/rpc.php` being used to query the RPC, which did work and was completely valid. This was an oversight by me during the port. The wiki has since been updated to reflect the current RPC API, which hosts its documentation at https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc by providing no arguments. In addition, trailing slashes are now rewritten to their unslashed counterparts. As issues were discovered, I've patched a few things into the new implementation: for RPC and only RPC, we will support non-redirected trailing slashes. This removes the redirect issue from the equation from clients that have encountered issues like yay and yaourt. [aur-general] Request to add makedumpfile to community repo

Hi folks, first of all thanks for maintaining Arch Linux - it's a very great distro to use! So, I'm working in a potential kdump package for Arch - I've been working for some time in Ubuntu/Debian kdump and it was a surprise when I started to use Arch and noticed that we don't have a kdump package (or in case we have something, please let me know and apologies in advance). Anyway, kdump functionality requires some components, like kexec, makedumpfile (to collect compressed dumps - a must if you ask me) and the crash utility to analyze the core dumps (although there are more tools for that). Currently, both kexec and crash are present in the official repositories (extra and community, respectively). Makedumpfile is maintained in AUR - very well maintainer I should add, thanks to Maurizio. But I'd like to request, if possible, to bump makedumpfile to community repository - I think it makes sense to have this package in the repos along with crash and kexec, so a potential kdump package in AUR would depend only on pre-built official packages. I'd like to help making that happen - just let me know what I can do. By reading the documentation in the wikis, it seems it's a good idea to propose packages that: - have at least some votes -> makedumpfile is OK in this respect; - well-maintained in AUR -> ditto for makedumpfile; - are useful -> I consider makedumpfile very useful, I'd say essential for kdump; So, if any TU wants to adopt it, I'd be really happy and grateful. If you google "archlinux texlive dummy", you know what ? You can get a lot of pages about "texlive dummy package on AUR". However, the package is GONE. Stop breaking this existing, proven to work and perfect solution. Please stop deleting them! Please restore both texlive-dummy and texlive-upstream. [aur-general] Regarding deletion request #30697 (waybox)

Good day list, I'm currently a little bit stumped about this particular request. I wouldn't have said anything if there were the right reason named for deletion. One reason would be, that due to upstream stagnation the waybox release could only be compiled with an older wlroots versions. Would have been a fair point and I was aware of that restriction. But what happened instead? I got a OOD Mail, 2 min later a deletion request[0] was issued. And eight minutes down the road this request got already accepted. Hella speedy process. If I recall the requests I made, there was time involved for checking if I made a reasonable request. But again: There were reasons why a request could have been valid. So let us take look: Regarding the OOD message: Quote: "This branch is 32 commits behind wizbright:master." Well, yes. But we are talking about a release from a tagged release. We aren't talking about waybox-git. And yes, it wasn't the main repo, but it was the personal repo from the last active developer. He did tag only in his repo as he wasn't the owner[1]. Regarding the request: Quote: "th1nhhdk [1] filed a deletion request for waybox [2]: -There's no "release", only the git version exists -Maintainer's custom repo is outdated -Maintainer don't want to maintain this package anymore" Okay, first point is debatable. But from my point of view were the tags from someone who actively contributed in the main repo and knew what he was doing. Second point is in my opinion not valid, as it build from a tag. But what maintainer are we talking about? The waybox maintainer or the PKGBUILD maintainer? If the latter. Well... I have nothing to do with this so called custom repo. And now the third point: Again. What maintainer? I got reprimanded in the past for requests that made it difficult when looked at a later point. And this was only a few hours ago. Although I must admit I cannot recall if I pinned a comment regarding the status with recent wlroots packages. But I'm fairly sure I didn't orphan the package (well, I got the OOD-message) and I didn't leave a comment like the previous maintainer of the PKGBUILD, who wrote an agiated message when he dropped it. So what do I want, after I writing this wall of text? In a tone which will likely come around as angry (kinda, but only at the situation and how it went and not the persons involved). Nothing in particular. I won't reinstate the package, as a deletion request with the right argument could have been deemed valid. My main gripes with this request in particular is the following point: * No time for me to react as the whole thing went down in 10 minutes And as far as I can tell, there was no attempt in making contact beforehand. I was even attempting to look at this again as someone informed me about a possible missing build dep. And was there even a check if the arguments were valid? In the past it took some time before requests were accepted. Orphaned, ood and truly dead sources were removed faster of course, but it could still be vetoed. But this one? One with a fairly active maintainer? Not so much. But whatever. It happened. [aur-general] Customize testing in PKGBUILD

Hi, I'm maintaining the eccodes aur package and would like to enable some extra tests in PKGBUILD. This can be done by downloading extra testdata and put that into the main build dir. As good as this may seem, it significantly blows up the build time of the package. So I thought about somehow let the user decide whether to run those expensive extra tests at build. Unfortunately I could not find a recommended way of doing so. Would it be an option to check an environment variable, call it ENABLE_EXTRA_TESTS or so, and run those stuff only if set? And otherwise just run the usual tests without the extra data? Any thoughts? Thanks! -- MfG Jan

Hi everyone, My name is Andreas Schleifer, in the internet also known as Segaja, and I would like to apply to the position of a Trusted User. My sponsors are Levente Polyak and Jelle van der Waa, thanks for that ;) I'm a 34 years old DevOps engineer in the same company as Levente is currently working in. I have started as a (PHP) developer and have over time migrated to also doing devops work. My Linux "career" started around 2005/2006 during my university time with Ubuntu. A few years later a friend of mine kindly pointed me to Arch Linux. At the beginning it was a bit uncomfortable for me but I quickly embraced the fact that there was no UI to configure anything and that you have to work directly on the configuration files. In the past year I have started to become more interested in packaging for Arch which made me adopt two orphaned AUR packages ([1] and [2]) and upload one new package [3]) to AUR. Some packages I started as AUR packages were later moved by Levente into the official community repository: [4], [5] At some point I also got interested in the reproducible builds topic and helped out there a bit [6]. This is also where I got in contact with Jelle and we talked a few times on IRC back then. When I got interested in becoming a TU I talked with Levente about this and he suggested that I should try to get some more packaging experience, so he suggested me to try to (re-)package schleuder [8] which was in a very old and broken version in AUR back then. It took me quiet a while and I learned a lot, but in the end I eneded up packaging schleuder [9] and schleuder-cli [10]. The biggest learning from that for me was 1) that packaging is much more then "dumping" an upstream tool into a PKGBUILD file to be installed on a users system and 2) that the ruby ecosystem can be very annoying to deal with. A lot of inconsistent tools to be used for testing and a lot of cyclic dependencies which makes writing PKGBUILD files with check() functions very difficult. In the process of packaging the schleuder packages I also ended up with a host of other ruby packages which were needed [11]. In order to be able to package the schleuder packages I also worked closely with the upstream maintainers to resolve issues that came up in the Arch Linux build environment. I have some devops experience from my daily work and I would like to also offer this to Arch Linux over time. I already talked with Jelle and Levente about some of the devops projects that were going on in the past. I'm currently also working on an ansible role to install schleuder on Arch Linux infrastructure [12] in order to handlesecurity(a)archlinux.org [13]. As TU I would also like to help out Levent and other package maintainers to keep their awesome packages up to date with upstream changes/releases (e.g. [4], [5], [7]). I would also like to migrate hss [1] and stern [2] to the official repositories, as I believe they are both very useful tools for people who work with servers (hss) and kubernetes (stern) often. Hi everyone, I have been hunting for broken packages and filing deletion requests against them for a while now... afaik, only 2 rejections in more than 500 requests. maybe, I should have asked those questions much earlier... anyway... 1. to TU's, how do you guys are checking if a package should be deleted or not ?? I want to know it to make the right call and not to spam... I'm kinda asking for a list of scenarios with some comments... example list from my experience: "broken dependency and orphan" dead for sure. "problem was reposted a long time ago and not fixed" dead. "Flagged out-of-date" better giving this info while making the request. "orphan but nothing broken" false request. you can also tell me, what makes a package is good and healthy... 2. how to file deletion requests for split packages ?? tried to find out about it but google was unhelpful... when I file a deletion request, it is going to be a request for the base package like the vote. isn't it?? then if one of the base packages is broken and needed to be removed then what I should do then ?? file a request saying it's for only that package ?? or tell the maintainer to remove that package's code from the PKGBUILD ?? and what I should do if the package is orphan ?? 3. inactive maintainer is not fixed... there is a lot of packages which is not orphan but the maintainer is not fixing the problem after reporting. saw this a lot when I was testing font packages... what should I do in this case ?? If it's a package not being dependent on others, can I file a deletion request after a certain time ?? how long should I wait ?? If the answer to the last question is "disown and maintain" and if I'm not interested in maintaining that package, how I should let other people know who might want to maintain ?? this aur-general mailing list ?? 4. font source problem... I tested 1104 font packages that start with 'ttf-' or 'otf-' (got the list on 2021-11-17) if their source works and checksum matches or not and also for broken dependency. Font sources are weird. like for some, you need the browser to download (you know how mega.nz downloads), certificate error on curl/wget but not on firefox, file hash changes like fontspace.com, the URL is temporary, the original source is dead but you know there is a lot of mirrors. it's pretty common... so can I ask maintainers to download from a mirror that is not in archwiki/Font_package_guidelines, or set up a github/lab mirror themselves and download from there ?? or should they make the package like "ttf-ms-win10" which lets the user know how to get the file to make this package ?? don't know if this kinda package is allowed... 5. how to get the exact number of requests I had to make and how many of them got accepted... do you know any easy to get that info?? or do I have to somehow parse and count mbox files from aur-requests archives? Hi, I have to work, so there's no time to check log files before the weekend and I couldn't find something related at https://bugs.archlinux.org/ or https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/virtualbox-bin/ . However, maybe somebody noticed this, too. I build and installed virtualbox-bin 6.1.30-1 from AUR. The output of dkms didn't mention something to worry about, but actually no modules were installed. For testing purpose I downgraded virtualbox-bin to the previous version that worked before, but now the modules were also missing. After downgrading dkms from 3.0.2-1 to 3.0.1-1, dkms build and installed the virtualbox-bin modules again. So at the moment I have no idea if dkms is broken or if virtualbox-bin needs a fix to fit to the latest dkms package. This simplifies and speeds up repository metadata update in many ways and also provides consistent information from one point in time. I've verified that the contents I've been getting through the API (/rpc/?v=5&type=info for all packages from packages.gz) are the same except from minor differerences in License ordering (can you confirm that it's stable?) and the fact that unicode characters in descriptions are now correctly represented (abra package as example). Just FYI. I wonder how hard it will be to also provide download URLs in this dump. grawlinson made a deletion request on this package after I updated it to v0.89.1, and they immediately approved their own request. The community package is flagged out-of-date and is at v0.88.1. First, this violates the AUR community guidelines that requests a user be contacted before a package is removed. Additionally, I find that they are making a request and then immediately approving their own request without any discussion to be concerning. I do not think you should be deleting AUR packages, unless they are malicious. If they are not being maintained, then you should be contacting the users before deleting them. Otherwise, there is no harm in having an AUR and trusted package, as many times they be actually be different or the trusted package is the one not actively getting updated. Hello, First-time AUR packager here. I am working on a PKGBUILD for a program that optionally supports wayland, and optionally supports xorg. When you configure the program, you specify one, the other, or both, of --enable-wayland and --enable-xorg. Specifying either option implies a build-time and a run-time dependency on the relevant client libraries. I could build a single package with dependencies on both, but I suspect most wayland users would want the wayland-only package, and vice-versa for xorg. Is this a use-case for split-package? Trying not to overcomplicate things. Thanks. -hossbeast

Hello AUR users, It is my pleasure to finally announce the initial "beta" testing stage of the FastAPI aurweb implementation. This development has majorly happened in the background, so it may come as a surprise to some. For those who want a quick check, we've deployed aurweb's development branch `pu` onto https://aur-dev.archlinux.org. More details about the instance can be found in the aur-dev.archlinux.org Testing page [1]. Below, there are several sections about different components of this adventure: - Proposal - Changes and Plans - Testing - Reporting == Proposal == In May of 2020, a proposal [2] was made to the project to port the existing PHP code over to a more modernized language and framework. The discussion settled on using the following stack: - Python - SQLAlchemy - Alembic - FastAPI == Changes and Plans == Along with this porting, we have fixed a few bugs and changed a few things. Following is a listing of a partial UX changelog: - The last Requests page no longer goes nowhere. - Requests can now be viewed as a normal User, filtered only to requests that the user created. - Users can now close requests they created by themselves. - The Trusted User page now allows users to page through the different tables independently. - The `get-comment-form` type has been removed from the RPC and implemented in a non-RPC route. - Performance of the homepage has been improved. - Performance of the package search page has been improved. - Performance of the `info` RPC type has been improved. - Most form-related actions have been changed. - Emitted cookies in production are now `Secure`, `HttpOnly` and `SameSite=strict`. - CSRF token inputs have been removed. - We may consider this in the future. - Many form pages now more correctly show errors or success messages on submission. - ...among several more... After the port is completely finished and deployed in production, we will be making improvements and sanitizations anywhere we see them being useful. There are quite a few features we already have tasked up for that point. However, more feature requests are welcome at any time. Note: The RPC is not yet completely implemented. It is not advisable to test against FastAPI's RPC implementation at the moment, but patches will be coming in soon and testing tasks will be added for it. == Testing == We have reached the point in development where we believe the majority of features have a working implementation. For this reason, we're now looking for crowdsourced user testing of the new platform. The developers of this new implementation were not historical experts of aurweb; the work was done with a fresh perspective and during exploration of the PHP code-base. We are sure there may be some mishaps around, and so this testing stage would be incredibly useful for us to put the finishing touches on the project with the end-goal of swapping to FastAPI in production 1-2 months from now. To get started with testing, visit the Testing Guide wiki page [3], which gives straight-forward direction on selecting and using a testing method. It is suggested to read the entire page, as all details are useful for those wishing to contribute feedback and utilizing the test systems. We're taking advantage of GitLab issues for tracking this test progress. An overview of the project's testing can be viewed in our progress issue [4]. Hi everyone. I'm the maintainer of python-spotdl. and my package needs `yt-dlp` as a dependency. but, as the AUR/yt-dlp got deleted, I got into a problem. I am not a python programmer, so I might be wrong... but what I found after testing my program needs files of `/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/yt_dlp/` folder. but, community/yt-dlp package dose not have files of `/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/yt_dlp/` folder. It only contains the binary to be used by the terminal. so it can not work as a dependency. And AUR/youtube-dlp-bin is the same. only the binary. And there is AUR/yt-dlp-git which have `/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/yt_dlp/` folder with all the files needs to be a dependency but it is a git package... I already wrote a package by the name python-yt-dlp which is built the way a python package is supposed to be built. As any of them can't function as a dependency should I upload it ?? or should I make a bug report in community/yt-dl ??. yours, zoorat.

If you own a project which uses the RPC API, you'll want to comply with the version 5 API immediately. See the Deprecation Notice [1] for a more elaborate explanation of the deprecation and how to move forward. Deprecation warning which was patched into the RPC API 31 days ago: The use of versions lower than 5 is now deprecated and will soon be unsupported. To ensure your API client supports the change without issue, it should use version 5 and adjust for any changes in the API interface. Hello, I am looking into publishing mine first package [0] into aur. I have working PKGBUILD with 2 split packages (only 2 out of 4 run on python3 now; client side for now). Problem is that I would like to use "beaker" as a pkgbase, since original packages has this basename in rpm based distros [1]. Currently beaker aur package is used for [2] [3], which is also in packages: beaker-appimage beaker-browser-bin beaker-browser-git beaker-git I contacted package maintainers, after week no reply. [aur-general] poe-git maintainership

Hi, I am the author of the program poe (https://sr.ht/~strahinja/poe) When I wanted to create an AUR package for my program, I found out that someone (with the username fossdd) already made a package for my program, called poe-git. The version of the package in the AUR, however, is 0.1.alpha.r11.g4a843ea-1 and I've moved on to v1.3.3. Granted, when poe-git is installed through an AUR helper, the latest source is pulled, but the PKGBUILD doesn't use the intended command for the installation (which is now PREFIX=... ./do install, I've added respecting the PREFIX environment variable), but instead uses the install(1) program manually, so the manpage isn't installed. I would be fine with fossdd maintaining poe-git AUR package if it is kept up-to-date, but I would prefer maintaining it myself. I tried contacting fossdd today early in the morning about this, but got no response yet. I would appreciate an advice on this.

Hello, I maintain the ungoogled-chromium packaging for Arch Linux as an officially supported platform. As a quick overview, ungoogled-chromium is a set of patches that aims to remove all dependencies on Google services from Chromium. Compiling Chromium is a quite resource and time intensive task, which is why I use both Open Build Service and GitHub Actions for offering binary releases. As the packing is Arch Linux specific, both build systems produce a package archive for pacman. A highly requested feature by users is to offer such a binary release in the AUR as it is more convenient for them compared to adding a custom repository for example. In the past there were already ungoogled-chromium-bin packages in the AUR, usually submitted by people not affiliated with the project and removed for some reason at some point in time. The most recent one would download a pacman package from an OBS repository and install it by extracting files manually. In the delete request removing this last package (#19142) it was stated that "the AUR is not intended to provide an index for PKGBUILDs that repackage the build package originally created by another PKGBUILD". While I understand that the AUR would want to avoid to just include repackaged entries like that, I am now wondering what the best way to offer a binary package in the AUR would be in my situation. Building Chromium separately into a non makepkg archive just for the AUR on GitHub Actions for example seems wasteful and would defeat the way package checksums are currently handled, as such making it harder for end users to quickly verify that the binary an AUR helper for example would download is legitimate. I tried looking for a rule that explicitly states the mentioned repackaging restrictions, but I was unable to find one. I have also found another AUR package which is normally available that repackages a pkg.tar.zst (codelite-bin). Hi, Last week I tried creating the account `vivi` for automating releases of our package (also `vivi`), instead of using my personal account `DuBistKomisch`. The email address should be `devops(a)vivi.io`, which is a shared mailbox on my company's Office 365. I didn't receive the initial password reset after registration, nor any requested from the password reset page. If I made a typo in the email, could it please be corrected? Hello AUR users, With the advent of FastAPI aurweb development, we've done some reviewing of the RPC API. With each increasing version to the RPC, it has become quite a heavy component of aurweb to maintain in complete back-compatibility mode for legacy RPC version users. These legacy versions reduce flexibility in the implementation and there are several bugs with the legacy versions which will not be addressed in favor of moving forward and focusing on the current highest version: 5 and future unreleased versions. For these reasons, we have decided to deprecate the following RPC versions: - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 Undeprecated versions: - 5 A deprecation warning has been patched into the RPC soon for all requests which use a version less than 5. This notice will be shown to users under the "warning" key of JSON output for a minimum of one month before true deprecation occurs: The use of versions lower than 5 is now deprecated and will soon be unsupported. To ensure your API client supports the change without issue, it should use version 5 and adjust for any changes in the API interface. See https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc for documentation related to v5. After one month has passed (from now), the RPC API should be seen to only support v5. Users should update their code to use v5 before this time to avoid any imminent client breakage. See https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc for documentation on working with version 5. Hi David, I'm zoorat. I'm the guy who sent deletion requests to "gtkwrite" and "gtkwrite-git". no clue about "gtkate" tho. The reason for deletion are 1. Missing dependency (gtksourceview2) with that broken dependency, you can't build any of those packages. and I tried by removing the dependency but build will fail. 2.Last Updated: 2019-02-21 00:53. or Last Updated: 2019-02-26 10:41. It's been more than 2 years... If you think I made a mistake please let me know. If you need those packages clone "https://aur.archlinux.org/gtkwrite-git" and "https://aur.archlinux.org/gtkwrite".

Hello AUR users, My name is Kevin Morris, also known as kevr. I've been getting interested in possibly helping out more with packages in general. I do not own too many in the AUR myself. Most of them are scripts that I developed and wanted to share with the community. My AUR Packages: - python-paginate - sprunge - sprunge-git - hastebin - hastebin-git - multiwatch I do want to help with more, but most of the things I can think of to add into the AUR already exist. So, I'd like to offer to any maintainers out there who may be interested: If you would like a comaintainer on your package, I am willing to take on that responsibility, as long as it is a package I am comfortable working on. This includes, in general, back-end (non-gui) packages -- especially packages which may serve as some sort of server. API, websites, web frameworks, libraries, and so on. But, I may be open to other kinds of packages as well -- the non-gui would just make testing and verification more simple for me. I definitely have more to learn each day, but I do have a pretty good understanding of the PKGBUILD format and build process as it is; enough that I can package things correctly (I believe; feedback on my current packages is welcome, of course). Hi, I'm currently trying to package multimc5 as VCS package. They recently added support for logging into your Minecraft account via a Microsoft account. But this requires a Microsoft client ID during compile. Now the devs decided to not make the client ID for their own builds public. Which they are okay to do, but this now comes with the problem that there is no client ID that a AUR package could use for oauth with Microsoft. I'm able to build it with my own client ID locally, but my question is now if there is any best practice on how to include such things into a package? Should we require users to create their own client secret, which is pretty bad UX? Best regards j.r

All, Who authorized the removal of my packages gtkwrite, gtwrite-git and gtkate from AUR? I check my dashboard regularly and there was nothing flagged and there was no notice that the packages were going to be removed. Why were they removed and why wasn't I informed before the removal? Hello my name is Jason. I just published my first package to the AUR. It is a text-processing program called fql. I was surprised how simple it was. I'm pretty good with bash and have previously maintained a personal Linux from scratch build so I'm pretty good at getting things complied. I was wondering if there is a place (or if this is that place) to find packages in need of a maintainer? if anyone has a minute to look at my PKGBUILD, that would be great. One of the tools listed in the wiki said it was missing something about contributors so maybe I missed a variable? Otherwise, I think I got it right.

Hello. Today I tried to build ruby-rubocop [1] package and it's in a strange state. A lot of packages for the package are cross-dependent for the check, for example ruby-ruby-progressbar [2] and ruby-fuubar [3]. The proposal of how to solve it from Mario [4] is to skip the check() phase, see comment [5]. The same is valid for package ruby-rubocop-performance [6] that is dependency for rubocop check and requires it to be built IMHO the state when the packages aren't able to be built by the simple AUR helper command like `yay -S ruby-rubocop` should be considered as room for improvement. If I'm wrong, please say so. But I'd like to have AUR packages in an easily installable state and not passing additional arguments like `--nocheck` for makepackage commands. [aur-general] What's happened with URxvt upstream? And how to build dependent packages now?

Hi guys, First of all, I’d like to say, I’m a long-time and happy user of the URxvt terminal emulator and more precisely — of its AUR package "rxvt-unicode-better-wheel-scrolling" [1]. It’s the very good complement to a WM of my choice (Window Maker) for many years. From aside, I didn’t updated Arch on my laptop around a year (11 months with a couple-triple of extra days). And in the end of last eek I’ve decided to do so (with help, of couse, pacman-static from the private repo of Eli Schwartz [2] — and then with the stock pacman straight out). Finally, my system is running well with all the official packages updated and those from the AUR too, except one mentioned for this asking — URxvt. AFAIK, and as checked out some of the AUR packages, resembling and augmenting functionality of the URxvt terminal emulator, — they are all pulling out the upstream tarball in their PKGBUILDs from Mark Lehmann’s website. The latter is currently unavailable, unfortunately. And the URxvt tarball is also unavailable for downloading. What to do now with this, guys? — Maybe some of you know where to get aforementined URxvt tarball (another URL, publicly advertised, or someone hosted it on their website). Hi aur-general, I've come across a Python library which serves a nice purpose for aurweb's FastAPI implementation, but noticed that it is not yet maintained in the Arch official repositories. For aurweb, we'd like to stick to packages which exist within our official repositories, and so I'm here to start a chat about either someone picking it up or applying as a TU to maintain it. Upstream: https://github.com/Pylons/paginate Description: A Python pagination module I've put together an AUR package for this project to share/demonstrate its PKGBUILD that could be used to produce a [community] package, located at https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python-paginate/. There are other python-*-paginate libraries around the AUR, but they are not meant to be as standalone as Pylon's paginate seems to be (out of the box, at least). For any TUs out there, could you perhaps give some feedback as to your thoughts on the package topic? It'd be greatly appreciated. That being said, I could maintain the package, but I have not really reached out to TUs to get any sort of sponsorship in regards to this, as I do not really have many packages that I know of to pick up. Hello, I'm relatively new to the AUR, and one of my packages[1] has been requested (marked?) For deletion. Naturally I believe that there's a case for the package. I plan to respond on the package page itself, but am a little lost on the actual process in general. Is there a specific audience I should frame my case to? What are the timings for deletion? Should the discussion be had here or there? Does the fact that it's even got this far mean there's no turning back (or can anyone file a request for further approval?). Thanks! [aur-general] Strange pikaur behaviour

Hello, I'm currently trying to build meshroom-git. I removed the old installation to replace alembic-qfix by community/alembic, and I'm able to build meshroom-git (with some problems). 1. For installation, I use "pikaur -Sa meshroom-git". 2. pikaur tells me about missing alembic-qfix, though latest PKGBUILD does not refer to it as a dependency. 3. I can only build meshroom-git after making some change (commenting/uncommenting a print instruction). 4. When I try again, I'm again told about dependency alembic-qfix not found in AUR. Also, when building meshroom-git, two outdated dependencies are built first and removed after the build. Obviously, there's still an earlier version of PKGBUILD located somewhere which is not deleted (and I don't know where to find it, as removing ~/.local/share/pikaur/aur_repos/meshroom-git and ~/.cache/pikaur/{build,pkg}/meshroom-git does not seem to be enough). Hello, after I managed to build cctag (by insertion of "cd" commands into PKGBUILD), now I have problems building alice-vision-git. The problem: Minor versions of OpenEXR (3.0.x) and Imath (3.1.x) differ. To fix the problem, I added "-DOPENEXR_IMATH_LIBRARY=/usr/lib/libImath-3_1.so" to PKGBUILD. Hi, I maintain the gnudatalanguage package on the aur. The current release is 0.9.9 (from 2019); however, there is 1.0.0-rc.3 available on their webpage. I recall having read somewhere in the docs that pushing rc version is generally discouraged on the aur, but got a out-of-date flagging today. Hi everyone! Thank you for the help on the the thread eariler, I found the advice and examples very useful. I have posted a request for review of my PKGBUILD over IRC, but I would appreciate any criticism here too. I have uploaded the PKGBUILD, and two files that would come with it (launcher.desktop and launcher.sh). There are a couple decisions I made that are unconventional, so I'll list them here: 1. As George suggested, I renamed my package from `rexpaint-bin` to just `rexpaint`, since there are no sources available. 2. The server hosting the program blocks Curl's user agent. As far as I can tell, the convention is to use "Mozilla" as a user agent instead. However, I have opted to use "PKGBUILD" as the agent, so I avoid accidentally messing up any statistics that may be collected upstream. 3. I have used standard package permissions as far as I can tell, except for `/usr/share/rexpaint/images`. The program saves data into this directory, so it must be 777. 4. I am not sure what to do with `/usr/share/rexpaint/data`. It contains data such as fonts and palettes, which might be edited by the user during usage. Right now I have assumed that the user will not do that, so it is not listed in `$backup` and its mode is 755. I have sent an email upstream asking about this, and am waiting for a response. 5. The program tries to write logs into the Working Directory (`/usr/share/rexpaint`), but it cannot do this because I have set its mode to 755. However, giving the everyone write permissions in `/usr/share/rexpaint` seems insecure. Please advise. As stated before, I have emailed upstream to ask if it's okay that I publish this packaging to the repositories. This is not required by the license, but I am too young to be making enemies, and it would be nice to have some upstream. I will publish it when I get the goahead, or if he takes more than 24h to reply. All feedback is appreciated. Thank you in advance, Vincent

I rarely get build errors, even with AUR packages - with the exception of alice-vision and its dependendencies -, so I'm not much used to handle such problems (the disadvantage of a stable system ;-) ). And I'm no C programmer, which makes it difficult for me to fix cmake related errors myself - I can only try to track problems until some level of complexity. In this case I thought the makefile would miss some dependency. As I'm using the nouveau driver instead of nvidia's, I'm pretty sure there's no CUDA support (but I'll not render complex graphics often, so some more processing time won't hurt). However, I plan to setup my Linux installation by the end of the year, so some modules and parameters may change in the future. Hello, This is my first time interacting with a mailing list, so please let me know if I've done something wrong, or I'm asking in the wrong place. I plan to submit a binary PKGBUILD for REXPaint, and since it's distributed as a portable binary for WINE, I have a couple questions about the guidelines: 1. Is it right that it should be installed into /usr/share? 2. How do I properly include files that are necessary for use, but not included in the upstream source? In my case, this would be a .desktop file and a bash script in /usr/bin. My intuition is to use "echo" during the prepare() phase, but I was wondering if there was a cleaner way to do this. 3. In accordance with the Nonfree guidelines, I will name my package 'rexpaint-bin'. However, since there is no open source version yet, do I need to conflict it with 'rexpaint'? Hi, I would like to have a confirmation. I encountered a PKGBUILD on AUR that is not building correctly except when systemd is present when building. The maintainer considers the makedeps is implicit as systemd is dragged by base metapackage. However devtools only ensures base-devel is present, not base, when building in a clean chroot. And I could not find a mention in the wiki of base expected to be present when writing a PKGBUILD. Could you confirm to me what are the guidelines? In the case where /dev/sda is selected for installation and an installer chooses to format the whole disk and install a basic partition system on the disk and any other data is already on the disk archinstall errors out. In this case, wipefs -a /dev/sda run first clears the pre-existing data and partition structure and archinstall then operates correctly.

These days my main involvement with arch is pacman and the AUR. I started contributing to pacman 3 years ago. Adding stricter pkgbuild linting and fixing a bug here or there. Fast forward to now and I'm one of the maintainers of pacman as well as maintaining the rust bindings for libalpm. On the AUR side I co developed yay, developed paru and also have contributions in pretty much every current AUR helper. So I pretty know the AUR/pacman/makepkg inside out. Some other things I do in and around Arch are: * I maintain a handful of AUR packages * I'm a moderator for the r/archlinux subreddit * I'm a (bit inactive) Bug wrangler * I also maintain a handful of pacman/AUR oriented rust/go libraries * I also go and bug AUR maintainers about broken pkgbuilds I'm a big fan of rust, so a lot of the packages I wish to maintain are rust related. Hello, I assume this is the right mailing list for this kind of thing. I have an account with the AUR and a couple of packages. I'm attempting to update one of those packages and I am getting a permission denied error when trying to clone the git repository. Now, my SSH key has changed and I went ahead and updated my SSH public key in the account settings. But for some reason I still get a permission denied error. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong here, or if there is something an administrator needs to fix, or something else altogether. Hello all! My name is Caleb Maclennan (AUR moniker “caleb”, most other places “alerque”). I’m a long time Arch Linux user and AUR contributor looking to get more involved, and specifically to join the TU group so that I can help out with packages in [community]. I’m particularly interested in the Lua ecosystem (which thanks largely to @Daurnimator is much less of a mess than it was a year ago when I first started looking into becoming a TU, but could still use a helping hand) as well as anything related to font development or typesetting. As you’ll see I have some experience in FOSS, software packaging, and Linux in general, but maybe the most important thing is I can still learn and I’m open to learning and adapting so that my contributions are in cooperation with the rest of the community, not in conflict with it. [aur-general] Package `pijul` in both AUR and Community-Testing

Hi everyone, today I noticed I was unable to push to the AUR repository for the pijul package with the server hook error message "remote: error: package already provided by [community-testing]: pijul". Sure enough, the package exists in the Community-Testing repository (see https://archlinux.org/packages/community-testing/x86_64/pijul/) Now, as far as I understand, packages can be "promoted" to the community / community-testing repository, however, in this case it seems like a new package with the same name has been created. Is this the usual procedure? What will my responsibilities as packager of the AUR pijul package be? What happens to the AUR package? Should I just leave it as it is? Submit a delete request? [aur-general] Issue a warning while (re)packaging a binary package?

Hi, a new version of a (binary) package I'm maintaining (clockify-desktop) requires an executable /tmp directory to run. So I'd thought about adding a warning to the PKGBUILD if /tmp is mounted noexec (as on all of my maschines). Unfortunately I could not find a hint in the documentation if 1. this idea is considered "good behaviour" 2. where exactly to put the warning. My first attempt whould be something like adding a pre/post install check, if the directory is executable and print a message in case it is not. Any thoughts on this one? Hello! I maintain a few packages and was pointed out by a user that the naming should be different (due to being a prebuilt deliverable). I found in the forums a similar case[0] and the suggestion was to send an email to this DL. I've already created a new repository with the new names, but I'd like to merge the old packages into the new ones. In the thread I read that it is possible to preserve comments and votes, if that's possible that would be great. Dear All, I hope this is the correct place to post the message. The `nvhpc` package adds a files `/etc/profile.d/nvhpc.sh` to the system. This file sets the environment variables: export CC=$nvcompdir/bin/nvc export CXX=$nvcompdir/bin/nvc++ export FC=$nvcompdir/bin/nvfortran export F90=$nvcompdir/bin/nvfortran export F77=$nvcompdir/bin/nvfortran export CPP=cpp This changes the default compiler of the system and thereby causing all utilities which honor the environment variable to fail. I wish that the `nvhpc.sh` should not be installed in `/etc/profile.d` and instead should be in a location which is not read by default. That way, the user who wants to opt into it can opt in. I know AUR is maintained by volunteers, but I'm hoping to reach the maintainer of the `nvhpc` packages through this mail. [aur-general] About the vuescan-bin package updating problm

So, I like the Vuescan app and I respect the developer for having made it. Really glad I paid for it. BUT it has to be said that installing/updating this aur package is a disaster. Basically: the download urls and/or the checksums keep changing to the point where 90% of the time when you try to update/install it, the pkgbuild is already out of date. I emailed the developer asking if he could adopt a better download url system. He replied: "No, I want people to only download VueScan from www.hamrick.com and I’m trying to figure out ways of disabling downloading from other sites." I explained to him that downloading from a repo or via a pkgbuild is such a convenient method and one of the key selling points of using Linux tbh. But haven't received an answer back (it has only been 3 days. But still). I really hope this 'issue' can somehow be resolved so people can properly install this great app without the constant cat-mouse game of trying to update the checksum fast enough. Cheers, Thibault

Unlike the file PKGBUILD, a patch file constitutes a modified source code because it does include some original code. No matter whether the modification is for use, or operation, or just even a typo fix, GPLV3 section 5 "Conveying Modified Source Versions" [1] doesn't distinguish them. I had a similar experience in terms of the AUR package SGE. I put my source code modification into a single patch file and put it to AUR git. Without my modification, SGE won't work with latest Linux anymore. However, due to an AUR website bug confirmed by a TU, the package was taken over without any emails sent to me. After a lot of back and force with the second maintainer, I finally gave up re-owning the package or making the software better within AUR. Instead I asked the second maintainer to add my name to the single patch file so I get the credit I deserve. However, the second maintainer denied that. He split the patch into many small patch files without my name in any of them, and insists that it is enough to have my name as the first AUR package maintainer. Then I asked him to remove my code modification, also was denied. Then I tried to ask TU to remove the package many times, all TUs denied my request, except the last TU deleted all those small patch files after he understood this is a serious copyright violation issue. Here is my understanding about those copyright conflicts. If you modified any source code, then GPL license will be applied, you have to copy the original copyright without any modification and then add yours, just as section 4 in GPL v3 says "You may convey verbatim copies of the Program's source code as you receive it" It is understandable that many AUR maintainers, or programmers like myself, don't know the details and often violates some copyright law more or less. We are lucky that most upstream programmers don't mind it. But, should such issue arise, I would do my best to make the upstream programmer happy or just find another alternative software. I know I am the minority in this list because the AUR SGE got two up- votes ironically after it didn't work anymore, and the second maintainer is even promoting the binary version based on my modification on some other repos. But, life is too short, I can live with it. I am writing this email because I just hope my painful experience can help this list know copyright better. I received a notice that several of my suckless builds (dwm-distrotube-git, st-distrotube-git, dmenu-distrotube-git) have been deleted from the AUR due to being "for one person". That's certainly reasonable but these packages are not for one person. A lot of people use these and depend on them. Again, these builds are not for one person. What can be done about this? Hello I'm the developer of NoiseTorch (https://github.com/lawl/NoiseTorch/) I faithfully believe that the package "noisetorch" in the ArchLinux User Repository ("AUR") (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/noisetorch/) violates my license (GPLv3). I have the asked previous maintainer of this package to not apply patches or make it clear that this is a fork that's being conveyed. They have evaluated my PKGBUILDs and quickly come to the conclusion that they are considered a crime against humanity, but feel free to offer your own opinions. Feedback is always great! Especially if there's something I've overlooked. I've been distro hopping too many times to count, but have comfortably settled on Arch Linux since circa 2015. I have always loved tinkering with software, and Linux provides one of the best ecosystems for that. It all started back in 2009 when I started self-hosting my mail domain(s) on a Debian VPS, which was migrated over to Arch once I became proficient/comfortable enough. My Arch-specific installations have since ballooned from that one VPS to an ex-enterprise server at home, running a large set of LXD containers that provide a variety of services to make my life somewhat easier. I maintain my own pacman repository for convenience; it is essentially a private git repository made up of git submodules (for AUR packages) as well as forked/new packages. To make maintenance easier I extensively rely on nvchecker, to keep on top of new releases. aurutils/devtools to build/test packages in a clean chroot. Additionally, namcap helps me figure out when I've invoked Cthulhu. Contributions: - Maintainer of some AUR packages since 2016[0] - Hosted a Tier-2 mirror from 2017[1] to 2019[2] on a Hetzner VPS - Flung some patches at the namcap & infrastructure repos - Filed bug reports/patches for various upstream projects and on the Arch bug tracker - Member of the Arch Testing Team since sometime last year (2020) Packages to (hopefully) transfer to community: - distrobuilder (would be co-maintained with Foxboron) - promscale & promscale_extension - prometheus-apcupsd-exporter - prometheus-snmp-exporter - prometheus-ipmi-exporter (and its freeipmi dependency, which I also co-maintain) There are some things I'd like to become more involved in: - Monitoring the bug tracker for issues that I can help with - Co-maintaining some LX{C,D} and Prometheus/Timescale related packages - Learning more about the overall tasks that TUs perform so I can decide where I can best focus my efforts. It all comes down to Arch having made such a positive impact in my life, and I believe it is past due that I start contributing back. The requests has been accepted automatically because he claims maintainership before deletion. I didn't find a way in the UI to restore the package. Hi, I have made a PKGBUILD for a Perl module according to the Wiki. The module's files get installed to /usr/lib/perl5/5.32/vendor_perl like most/all other such packages. But that module (and probably many others) do not depend on the exact version of Perl interpreter. I always find it annoying to download and update all perl module packages, because the interpreter's version has changed. So I would like these to install to /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl How do I do this correctly? BR

There are a lot of packages in AUR that use something like: npm install -g --user root --cache "${srcdir}/npm-cache" --prefix "$pkgdir/usr" "$srcdir/$_npmname-$pkgver.tgz" to install and package a nodejs project. I guess at some point in time `--user root` worked for NPM but nowadays, npm behaves like this: 1) it silently ignores the `--user` option 2) installs the NPM package root (before installing the wanted .tgz) https://www.npmjs.com/package/root I guess `--user root` worked in some version of NPM but at some point npm decided to remove the option and not error on its use (what can I say). So, the recommendation is to remove all uses of `--user root` in PKGBUILD. ps. can someone run a grep -r -- "--user root" on the whole of AUR? -- damjan

[aur-general] AUR not aware of changes in the regular repos

Hi, recently, I've been alerted by a user of one of my packages to the fact that one direct dependency and several dependencies down the tree are no longer available in the regular repos. However, they are not marked in the usual way in the AUR UI (disabled link, bold, red) and when I tried to push the affected package to the AUR, I get denied, 'cause AUR still thinks it's available in the regular repos: remote: error: package already provided by [community]: python2-beautifulsoup4 remote: error: hook declined to update refs/heads/master I suspect the aurblup script stopped working/being called, but I'm not familiar with the codebase, so I'm not able to investigate/fix further. Hello everyone. I recently came across a bug in dvisvgm [0] and contacted the developer about it. He was able to tell me that my issue was already fixed in the newest upstream version [1]. Currently, dvisvgm is installed as a part of extra/texlive-bin. However, TexLive (and as such the dvisvgm version that is distributed with it) only gets updated once a year [2][3], so the currently obtainable version of dvisvgm has this bug until at least April. I was wondering how I'd go about submitting a PKGBUILD that installs a single binary from texlive-bin. As far as I know, no texlive package relies on this specific version of dvisvgm (or any version of it, since it's only an auxiliary binary), so overwriting the existing version on the system shouldn't be a problem. Another issue I faced is that dvisvgm depends on texlive-bin, but also should overwrite the /usr/bin/dvisvgm that is installed through texlive-bin. How would I go about submitting this PKGBUILD? Moreover, the PKGBUILD seems to be invalid too (yay fails to install the package). Should I still maintain this package or ask for a deletion? I looked at aur-requests archive and saw the orphan request was filed on Sat Jan 2 09:42:38 UTC 2021. The request was accepted on Sat Jan 2 09:42:38 UTC 2021 or within a second ! I'm currently studying software engineering and working as a backend developer at a social media startup. I like to work my way through the software world by getting involved in open source projects [0] and trying to create unique and interesting tools. It's my hobby/job to work on Linux specific software so I can say that I'm getting more familiar with Linux concepts in general as time goes. In the meantime, I'm trying to get a grip on Arch Linux specific topics like its build system since it's the main distribution that I use/learn for years. Thus, I package & maintain the software that I like/use in AUR [1] for experiencing different scenarios and learning new techniques. It's also important for me to engage with the community and get involved in events when I'm able to. One example would be this year's Arch Conf which I recapped the things I learned about packaging Rust applications [2]. So I'd like to keep learning new things and be useful at the same time by becoming a Trusted User for taking a role in AUR and maintaining community packages as every Trusted User does. In the long term, I believe that I can contribute to the Arch projects as I gain experience and knowledge by working in the field. EXPERIENCE Although I mostly use Rust and Go recently, I have worked with languages like C, Python, and Java in the past. I believe that the words about "knowing" a programming language is cheap so it's strongly encouraged to check the projects that I write with them. Since the general mantra in software development is "learn by practice", it's likely for me to learn a new technology by using it. Apart from those, I often write shell scripts to manage various things in my system [3] such as the semi-automation of releasing a new version of a package in AUR or performing system-related trivial tasks. Briefly, I can say that I'm fluent in Rust, Go, C, and still sharpening my shell scripting skills. As for now, my purpose is to adopt/maintain Rust, Go, C, and Python packages in the community repository, move some of my favorite packages about networking like gping [10] and ali [11] to there and help with the tooling of reproducible builds. My interactions with the packages and the Trusted Users also taught me they are responsible for crucial tasks. And I believe that I'm at a point in my life that I can take such responsibilities regardless of how challenging the tasks are. I can also manage my priorities and time well for taking a role as a Trusted User. Although I want to help with the essential duties like keeping an eye on AUR (reviewing requests, looking into security issues, etc.) and maintaining packages in the community repository, I should also say that one of my goals for the future is to develop Arch Linux specific projects and contribute to the existing ones. I'm sure that I'll get to the point where I have enough context and experience quickly with the help of the rest of the team if the application succeeds. So that's why I believe becoming a Trusted User and helping out on the packaging issues is definitely a good place for me to start contributing more concretely to the Arch Linux project. [aur-general] Transition users from package x to package y (package x deprecated)

Hi guys, I maintain the multiload-ng AUR packages, in particular xfce4-plugin-multiload-ng-gtk2 and xfce4-plugin-multiload-ng-gtk3. After the recent Xfce 4.16 update the gtk2 version stopped building, so I would like to delete xfce4-plugin-multiload-ng-gtk2 and somehow migrate the users to xfce4-plugin-multiload-ng-gtk3 (which should be renamed to just xfce4-plugin-multiload-ng if possible). [aur-general] Packages disappearing

Hi, I just ran a update of the AUR packages I have installed and noticed that fprintd-clients, open-fprintd and python-validity just disappeared within a day or so. I already searched on through the aur-requests@ list but couldn't find anything about any of those three packages. Does somebody know what happened with them / why they where removed? Thanks j.r

Hi, I have been less active in Arch for some time. I'm involved in many other projects that end up taking lots of time, and as a result I don't have the required time / energy / interest for Arch anymore. When my last Arch machine died recently after 10 years of loyal Arch service, it was a good sign that I should make this official. With that being said, I am resigning as a TU. I've had some, let's say, "disagreements" with a few members of the team over the years, but overall it was a positive experience. Keep up the good work, and take care of this delicate balance between technical excellence and community-minded approach. [aur-general] TU applications, discussion periods and "no" votes.

Hi all, In at least one recent TU application, there was not a single criticism or negative remark during the discussion period and yet there was still a "no" vote in the result. A "no" vote is an objection and it is important to bring it up during the discussion period so that other TUs may take it into consideration when voting. It also gives the candidate the opportunity to address it, which itself can be very informative during the discussion period. I am not trying to call anyone out. It may well be the case that someone missed the discussion period or misclicked while voting, or has a personal objection or a blood vendetta against the candidate's family spanning back 5 generations that they are not allowed to talk about. I absolutely do not want to know who voted "no" or why. I just want to encourage everyone to participate in the discussion period when they have something to add. Regards, Xyne
